1. PVL Peanut Butter Chocolate - this whey is freaking amazing in milk. Blend it up with milk and some ice cubes and it tastes exactly like a peanut butter ice cream milk shake, with the consistency you'd get a McDonalds. Wow, this fixes my sweet tooth craving. This does not mix well with water.

2. Dymatize Mint Chocolate and Butter Cream Toffe - I was a little disappointed with these, and was expecting more based on the reviews I'd come across. They have a slight aftertaste which is noticeable if you don't mix it with other taste-bearing foods. It is possible to mix with water for decent results, but both taste far superior mixed with milk. They do not blend with ice and milk as well as the PVL. I like to mix both of these into my morning oatmeal - hellofalot better than some Splenda.

3. Syntrax Lemonade - this is probably the best of the 3 to mix with water. It is a nice fruity change of pace once in a while. Still, it has a slight after-taste and is not as good as I expected.

In the future, I will probably just by PVL in its various flavors. I cannot overstate how good it tastes blended with milk and ice; the consistency is insanely smooth!

BSN's Synthra-6. Once they put out in the PX, it doesn't stay around for long. My roommate bought some last week. But I swear to God, I look for it all last week and didn't see any at all. Had to settle for BSN's Lean Desserts-plus the fact its more for my body type.

the best TASTING i've had is
BSN Syntha-6
and
MuscleMilk

I checked out the labels and realized that these two also contain the most calories and fat/sat fat content...

bsn:

for ONE scoop
200 cals
6 grams of fat

musclemilk:

for two scoops (one serving)
300 cals
12 g fat
6 g sat/fat

both of these products are pretty good but you have to make sure your really getting your workouts/cardio in to make sure it goes to good use

i'm a big fan of muscle milk, has any1 tried the new cake batter or brownie batter flavors in water?, if so is it good, and which one is better

I have the Brownie Batter right now and it tastes pretty damn good. It's not exactly like brownies but it's close enough. Also the peanut butter and chocolate is the best tasting stuff I have had besides chocolate syntha-6.

I would like to try VPX zero impact Whey Isolate. Looks expensive though.

Muscle Milk chocolate Im addicted to at the moment. On ym 4th straight tub.

Mixes with alot of things too, like unflavored Whey Isolate to increase the protein or ON whey mixes well with it in water.

ON needs to make an Isolate. I might plunk down some change for the NOW pure whey isolate or something from vitacost. They got NSI brand.....no clue on how it tastes though. All I know is that Isopure is too much $$$ and I don't like the powders at all, only the RTD versions.

I agree, Muscle Milk is the best tasting one, but so is ice cream and I could still get my protein, carbs, and calories from that... I too, would also recomend taking the Lean Pro Matrix because you get a ridiculous amount of protein per serving, where as Muscle Milk is only giving you 16 grams of a non time released blend per scoop. Protein is like 10 bucks a pound now, so you want to get the most bang for your bucks. The Lean Pro Matrix taste great, but you can always add in an extra scoop of ice cream if you are really keen on taste. The fat content would probably still be less than whats in Muscle Milk.

What is the absolute BEST tasting protein that you have ever tried? We are NOT talking about the best working protein, the best protein blend, or the WORST tasting protein. Just reply and let us know what protein is your favorite tasting, describe the taste, and tell us what flavors are the best.

Thanks for helping many others!
I absolutely fell inlove with AllMax Nutrition's Isoflex in Chocolate with Chocolate Chips. Not only is the IsoFlex GLUTEN and ASPARTAME FREE, but it TASTES incredible, mixes in WATER without leaving any chucks, and it is easily digestible and it assimilates quickly into the blood stream getting to the muscles quickly and efficiently. I made up a few recipes with the Chocolate Chip flavor! Who would have thought that Chocolate Protein powder would taste great mixed with Orange Juice for a Quick Whey Protein and simple carb post workout drink?! At home I would do a scoop (27g worth) of the Isoflex Chocolate add in 1/2 cup OJ (Tropicana or something...not concentrated), add in about 1/2 cup of plain non fat yogurt, 2 packs of splenda and ice to thicken! Yummy...it was like an chocolate orange creamsickle! Then, I had an idea when I was having a sugar craving. I had some FRESH Bing Cherries. I pitted them (about 20) threw them in the blender with one scoop of the Isoflex chocolate protein powder, added in 2 packs of splenda, ice and water and blended away. It was like eating Cherry Garcia Ben and Jerry's Icecream! See, with the gluten and wheat intolerance that I have, I have to come up with wild and crazy concoctions that are tasty and fun to eat that will satiate a sweet tooth! Well, Isoflex is not only good for muscles, but it helps to make a tasty treat when in a bind!!!! :-) That is my story and I am sticking to it! :-) Yeah Baby!

I read a lot of reviews on this forum for ON's 100% whey power, all very positive, and decided to try it out. I do find it very easy to mix, in water or milk, but I do not think it tastes as good as some of the other powders I have been using. In fact, I just don't really like the taste at all. I do not think it is very strong. If I mix it with water, it tastes like watered down chocolate. If I use milk, it tastes like chocolate milk with way too much milk. I can figure out the way to make it taste better if there is a good reason, other than the taste, to be using it. Any comments?

I am new to this forum, so please let me know what you all think. I read a lot of negative statements regarding BSN products, but I still am not sure why everyone feels that way. I had been using Syntha-6 before changing to ON's double rich chocolate product. I found Syntha-6 to mix very easily, just like ON did, but I thought it tasted better. I read a post discussing a few ingredients that were questionable, but still am not sure why everyone says this is a powder for newbies and people who know nothing about weightlifting. Could I be directed to some real arguments? I haven't been able to find any if they are on this forum.

Also, I was using CytoSport's Muscle Milk. It tastes fantastic and seems to be a good mixture of proteins. The only thing I found was a high fat content, but they cut that down from 18 to 12 grams. What does everyone think about this powder? Thanks

Muscle Milk is by far the best tasting chocolate I've ever had so it's hard to say "no" to it for any reason.

I know you need at least 4 scoops a day to get any real benefits however, you can mix in some unflavored whey isolate or ON whey to add extra protein and it will last longer.

The best (by FAR) for the amount of protein in it and 0 carbs... is Ultimate Nutritions Iso Sensations!!! I love the chocolate and vanilla. They taste awsome by themselves but also mixed in things like oatmeal. YUM!

alphaproject
06-03-2008, 01:18 PM
The IsoSensations looks impressive actually.

In comparison though...... here are some cheaper longer lasting servings.
No clue on taste.

IDS Multi-Pro Whey 5 pounds. $40.99
NOW Whey Protein Isolate $49.99 (use 1 scoop not 2)
Nature's Best Zero Carb Isopure $38.99 (1 scoop vs 2 ) 3 pounds

Although....the 5 pounds natural peaks my interest. I'd throw that in with some Muscle Milk. 69 servings would last a good 2 months.

The Double Rich Chocolate is what I am using and I do not like it at all. Again, I think it mixes great, but the taste is not good. Taste is very important to me because otherwise I won't drink the stuff.

#1 by far of the powders I have tried is Syntha-6 Chocolate

#2 is the Syntha-6 Strawberry

Others that were decent but not great are the Nectar Lemonade, GNC Wheybolic Chocolate and Syntha-6 Moccachino. I have not tried the Muscle Milk as that is just way to much fat for me...the Syntha-6 is pushing the limit as it is. I did try Muscle Milk "light" chocolate and thought the taste was mediocre at best.

Remember that taste is a subjective thing...

This comment does not help in any way. Are you trying to say that ON is better for getting big? That BSN or Cytosport products don't get you big? If so, why?

The only negatives I have been able to find about these two products on this forum are very vague .. mostly being that you are a stupid beginner if you buy them, but no one has really said why they would choose ON over BSN. If I am missing an article or post that you could point me to, that would help.

Out of all the Strawberry flavors I've tasted, ON Whey Delicious Strawberry has tasted the best. I think of it as my dessert after working out.

Every protein supplement has always been some form of Strawberry, I've never been a fan of Chocolate, Vanilla, Cookies & Cream, or any other stuff that reminds me of ice cream...

I have tried lots of protein powders, and as far as taste, consistency, mixability, and texture goes, hands down:

Nature''s Best Zero Carb Isopure, 3 Lbs., Low Carb Dutch Chocolate

While I like Designer Whey, all their powders have this certain unifying overly sweet thickness that I'm not quite in love with. The Isopure, on the other hand, tastes exactly like chocolate milk. Its not trying too hard, and its perfect just mixed with water. Not too frothy, not too ambitious in its attempt to taste like turtle cheesecake or anything like that... just good old fashioned delicious chocolate!

Seriously, blend it up with a little ice, water and a tablespoon or so of sugar free hazelnut coffee creamer (or peanut butter)... INCREDIBLE! Better than a chololate ice-cream shake- it makes sticking to your nutrition program super easy!!

ON's gold standard vanilla whey works fine for me. taste good and gets the job done. 5.5 g's of bcaa's,4 G's of glutamine. low fat and low sugars. I've also tried the MRI french vanilla whey and that taste great. i've tried nitro-tech by MT and i wasn't fan of the taste, both vanilla and chocolate. I stack ON's whey with creatine and i'm happy with the results i'm seeing.

GNC chocolate caramel. tastes like chips ahoy, my favorite to date. I get TP because for the same price i get cold filtered whey (no lactose farts) and flax oil powder and protease enzyme. TP flavors are very good, but they don't make one that tastes like cookies. def dropping the flax next order (i can't keep all that whey in the fridge) and maybe the protease.

My favourite whey flavor is anything with chocolate. And being Belgian I know what good chocolate tastes like. The whey with the best chocolate flavour out there is definitely the one by PVL; Whey Gourmet. A shame they don't sell it on bb.com.

Just got some Dymatize Iso 100: gag me with plastic cotton candy! Placed a rescue order of PVL Peanut Butter Chocolate- still the best I've ever tried vs. ON, Designer Whey, Champion, Dymatize, Cytosport, Isopure- all very good, BTW.

We've found that trying to gag down any sort of protein powder is one of the more difficult aspects of our workout/supplement regimen. We mix with water to avoid too many calories which makes it even worse. The very best pre-mixed protein drink we've found is Muscle Milk - we actually drinking these versus dreading it. BUT, lots of calories!!

Guys, i've tried just about every brand out there. The consistent problem with this board is that people are comparing powders like Syntha 6 to ON Whey... you can't! So let's break this down to 3 best tasting powder categories (i can't comment on weight gainers):

1) Whey Protein, low fat/carb: I have 2 favorites here. My absolute top choice based on ingrediant profile and taste is VPX Zero Carb Graham Cracker. My second choice is Cytosport Dutch Chocolate. This is a much cheaper powder than VPX so i take this more as the between meals shake while i do the VPX post workout or first thing in the morning.

Note: While i like ON for it's balance between profile (solid) and taste (drinkable) anyone who says they have the best tasting powders is nuts.

2) Casein Protein: This is interesting. MY ABSOLUTELY FAVORITE TASTING POWDER in the world is Ultra Peptide 2.0 Choc Peanut Butter. 1 scoop in 6-7 ounces of water tastes awesome. The issue is, you can't compare this to other Casein powders because 2.0 has a lot of fat..good fat, but fat nonetheless. So, if you want to go the non fat Casein Powder route go with Ultra Peptide 1.0 or ISS Micellular Matrix. Both EXCELLENT choices in Chocolate flavor for profile and taste.

3) Meal Replacements: This is the category i put Syntha 6 and Muscle Milk in. It's totally unfair to compare these to the other category powders in taste because they have so much more calories and other "felxibility" to allow for a better tasting product. For example, it's no wonder Ultra Peptide 2.0 tastes better than 1.0, it's the grams of fat that's added. So for this section, my favorites are the Muscle Milk Flavors. While Syntha 6 Strawberry and others taste great, i found myself getting tired of them quickly. But flavors like cake batter and choc banana crunch for muscle milk...wow, even in water But rememeber, these are HIGH IN FAT.

In conclusion: i can't say this enough: i have yet to taste a category 1 protien powder that truly tastes AMAZING. Sure there are quite a few that have great profiles and are VERY DRINKABLE. But, to have an enjoyable experience...haven't found it yet in category 1 but definitely found it in categories 2 and 3.

hope this helps.

American Sports Nutrition "American Whey" hands down, they were used in 4 of the Juice bars I worked at during college and damn is the taste amazing! I'd have everyone from serious NPC competitors to the average Joe wondering what brand is it... Well after looking around I finally found it at a good price in a few places, but if you want an link just PM me... Oh and not to mention they have around 6-8 flavors that are all out of this world!

Runner up would have to be Muscle Milk!

Besides water and skim milk, we use watered down white grape juice at our bar. It's good if you want to make a sweeter shake. We have a shake were we use ON 100% Whey Chocolate with the juice, banana and strawberries - definitely a favorite for a lot of the members.

Dizzy, i couldn't disagree more but then again, taste is relative to the person. I've heard a few others complain it's chalky, i personally don't see it. I like the Banana Cream too. This is my favorite tasting powder in water, hand's down. However, i never denied the quality taste of powders like Muscle Milk and Syntha 6. I just feel the taste+profile combo of UP trumps these products for pre-bed. Meal replacement is another story.

Sure would be nice to just jump in the car and drive to whatever store sells the brands you guys are talking about. We whine about this all the time but the Base Exchange here at Ramstein Germany is soooooo limited and unpredictable. True, we can order on line but who wants to wait anywhere from 5 to 30 days?? It stinks that you have such a hard time with choices. When you have the chance, try to find some UP 2.0 Choc PB. you'll either think it's the best powder or like some others, find it chalky. One thing is certian, it's definitely a powder to try once for yourself.

Muscle Milk has a great flavor system.. Cytosport Complete Whey, which is their "non/low fat" powder also doesn't taste bad (but i'd never compare the 2) so they clearly know what they're doing with flavors. The knock of course is the fat content (i'm not a buyer of the eat fat lose weight theory) and the lower quality protein which is why i cannot suggest MM after workouts or first thing in the morning.

Syntha-6 is also like a said a great tasting powder and has a better profile than MM. That's why you see so many people recommending this.

By the way.. for those of you looking for the best tasting powder that has the best ingredient profile (e.g. as little fat as possible) you got to try the VPX ZERO Carb powder... puts ON (which i like by the way) to shame in many ways.

Ive tried Met-RX whey, EAS whey, Bally total fitness whey, and syntha-6.
Syntha-6 is by far the best tasting. I have a problem with protein powders that have a strong whey taste. Which all three of the others had, the EAS made me really sick and i actually lost 8 pounds in about 2 weeks when i was done puking. The Syntha-6 tastes like nesquick with a slight whey taste, its sooooooo good.

Below is a list of all the powders I've used in the last 5 years that I can remember

ON = Cookies & creme, Double Rich Chocolate, Strawberry and Rocky Road

GF Pro = Blueberry madness

Muscle Milk = Strawberry milkshake, Peanut Butter Chocolate, Bluberries 'n Creme

EAS Whey = Chocolate

Syntrax Nectar = Fuzzy Navel, kiwi strawberry, and Apple Ecstasy

Dymatize = Gourmet Vanilla and Butter Toffee

NLN Lean pro Matrix = Strawberry & creme, Chocolate, and Banana's & creme

Cytosport complete whey = Cookies 'n' Creme and Cocoa Bean

Best Tasting Whey concentrate

Dymatize butter toffee... is awesom sludge style

(Sludge - 2 scoops protein, 2 tbspn PB, 2 to 4 oz water mixed into a paste... put in freezer 30-60 minutes... best part of my day!)

Best Tasting Whey Isolate

Syntrax Kiwi Strawberry (just in water taste just like juice)
Syntrax Fuzzy Navel (blended with oats and frozen fruit)

Best Quality hands down and it's a blend

Lean pro Maxtrix (http://nlnutrition.net/lean-pro-matrix.html) Banana & creme is only next to the Dymatize butter Toffee as far as the best I've tasted. Just wish it was available in more places.

I duno why ppl like ONs flavours so much, you can taste the artificial sweetner in them far too much. Theyre pretty watery shakes aswell. Muscle milk kills em for flavour

Ive had

PVL - pina colado, vanilla icecream

ON's - Everything... the strawberry is actually disgusting, the rockyroad tastes so artificial i got sick of it after 3 shakes.

Cellbiology- chocolate, lemon sorbet, caramel, choc mint.

Muscle milk- choc mint chip, banana cream, browny batter

Dymatize- orange dreamsicle, pina colado, cafe mochacino, cookies n creme.

Gentec- chocolate

Elemental nutrition- chocolate, banana.

I also had one that was like fruit juice, i didnt enjoy it too much prefer the creamy flavours.

Muscle milk chocmint and browny batter, are easily to two best flavours ive tried so far.

Dymatize ISO100 Chocolate - hands down the best WPI 0g fat, extremely low carb chocolate protein powder I have tried. I like my proteins to have the least amount of additives possible - if I want vitamins + minerals I will take them separately. I also want ZERO fat and basically ZERO carbs.

Mixes and tastes better then Optimum Nutrition chocolate and is better quality (WPI vs mixed/WPC), has less fat, less cholesterol, less carbs - perfect for my needs.

I have also tried:

Optimum Nutrition:
100% Vanilla - Boring, artificial vanilla flavour
100% rocky road - Horrible, nasty aftertaste
100% chocolate mint - Very nice, gets boring after a while though
100% banana - Horrible artificial flavour
100% cookies n cream - Just as bad as rocky road
100% strawberry - Horrible artificial flavour
100% chocolate - VERY nice, almost like Nesquick, very mild chocolate flavour

Dymatize:
Elite Chocolate - Very nice, doesn't mix as well as ON but has a strong chocolate flavour
Elite Butter Toffee - Nice at first, but then it turns bad and I started hating it
Elite Cafe Mocha - VERY nice, up there with my favourites (ON chocolate or chocolate mint)
Elite Chocolate Mint - VERY nice, about equal with ON's chocolate mint
Elite Vanilla - Terrible artificial flavour
Elite Banana - Didn't enjoy it very much
ISO100 Vanilla - Slightly better than the Elite version, but still just tastes wrong and boring.

Syntrax:
Nectar Apple - Never touching this again, VERY artifical flavour
Nectar Fuzzy Navel - Worse than the apple, never touching this again either.

At the end of this, my favourites (in order from best to worst) are:

Dymatize ISO100 Chocolate
ON 100% Chocolate
Dymatize Elite Chocolate
ON 100% Chocolate Mint or Dymatize Elite Chocolate Mint or Dymatize Cafe Mocha (tie between the 3)

Note: All of the above have been tried with water and skim/non-fat milk (except ob course the Syntrax fruit flavours). All are without a doubt better with milk, but the only ones that are decent with water are the dymatize and ON chocolate, choc+mint and cafe mocha.

Hands down, the best I've ever had is MRI's chocolate Pro-Nos. 2 scoops is extremely thick and rich even in 12 oz of water and it has enough good fats and calories to be used as a gainer if you take it in milk with PB

I agree, no idea why people rave about ON. Its okay, but not great by anymeans. All subjective I guess. The new Scivation Whey Chocolate is great.

American Whey, by American Sports Nutrition.

Picked up 10lbs for just under $50, (plus postage.) so, it is the cheapest I am aware of, AND the banana tastes awesome with milk. The chocolate is great also, but the banana is da bomb! To save on the $$, you do get a few grams of fat and a few grams of carbs, but you still get over 20g of protein per serving.

It's like an almond/rice flavor (some type of vanilla flavor if I recall) - it's hard to explain, but it tastes decent!

You can't get Nitro Core due to "egg" and "aminogen"?! You've got to be kidding, that's some BS. I remember reading some threads about not getting some supplements but I can't believe they'd block this sort of protein. I'm sorry!

The ON Strawberry is waaaaaaaaaay to sweet in my opinion. At the gym we make a strawberry/banana shake with the ON Strawberry, white grape juice, frozen strawberries and a banana. How people stomach it is beyond me. Way too sweet for me.

everyone seems to be saying this, but this being a thread for taste only is it really a musclemilk/syntha-6 beater???

Deviant, I reached out to bb.com because i have a problem with this thread as it does not differentiate between the powders that just taste great (regardless of calories, fat content, etc) and the powders that taste great AND are great low far/low carb powders.

I love Syntha 6, Muscle Milk, and UP 2.0 but all of these have high fat content. Yes i know, you can argue it's good fat all you want but the fact remains if you're not looking to add the extra fat calories and want a powder that tastes great AND is low in fat, these are not the optimal choices. I take 1-2 scoops of these types of powders each day but for the other 2-3 servings of protein powder i take, these don't do it because of the fat.

So, I wish there was a separate thread for "best tasting low fat protein powder" but that doesn't exist...so people should get out of the habit of trying to compare the ON and Dymatizes of the world vs. the Muscle Milk and Sytha 6s of the world.

If people are looking for the low carb/low fat best tasting powder, i recommend trying VPX Zero Card Graham Cracker. Tastes really good and the ingredient profile is incredible.

I've tried quite a few protein powders and most taste better with milk. My problem is the lactose is brutal on my gut. There are a few like BSN Syntha-6, Dymatize ISO-100, and IDS whey isolate that taste great mixed with very cold water.

Dymatize iso-100 has the best ratio of WPI and is priced reasonably well. The taste is very good. 28 gram scoop =24 grams protein, pretty damn awesome. About $11.00 a pound

IDS WPI is priced lower and tastes better 34g scoop 26 grams protein. IDS has a bad rep for some reason. I don't know why though. I have used their products like Waximaze, Mass Tabs and proteins for 3 years now and have had no issues. $8.00 a pound.

BSN Syntha-6 Tastes the Best but has the worst protein ratio 44gram scoop but only 22 grams protein. About $9.00 a pound but you get half as much protein.

For those people that like Optimum , the taste is horrendous when mixed with water and is just ok with milk compared to the aforementioned others. At 32g scoop and 24 g protein, the protein ratio is not as good as Dymatize or IDS. $8.00 a pound is reasonable if you can tolerate the taste.

The per pound costs were based on 5lb tubs (except for BSN). VPX is just plain nasty....

Hopefully more people read my post and start differentiating between the high and low fat powders... because while i love the VPX Zero Carb Graham Cracker and I think the cost is warranted, it would be nice to see if there's another out there that tastes as good, has as good an ingredient profile (or close to it) and also is a bit cheaper. Hello...Lurker here but I have a question that has been bugging me.

I know there has been a lot of discussion about low-fat, low cal protein mixes...

Can anyone recommend a low fat (lower fat), low cal (reasonably low cal) PRE-MIXED or Ready to Drink protein drink? Resealable a plus but not required...I have the need for some portable ones on occasion and I would like to get a case or two to keep at home.

Let's say that price was not an issue or that flavor does not matter. Any suggestions on ready mixed...Right now when I need a Pre-mixed I am using a Boost drink that is:
8 FL. oz
240 Calories
50 Calories from Fat
6 grams Total Fat
33 grams Carbs
15 grams Protein

Does such an animal exist? Thanks for any suggestions that you can offer...

It's fine, you won't love it but it mixes well and is drinkable. You ALWAYS do a heaping scoop, otherwise, you're not getting the profile of the single serving size.

For this thread though, since the search is for the best tasting protein powder, i think you can do better with a few others out there that have similar or better ingrediant profiles (if you can spend a few more bucks).

Curry, they definitely do exist. Labrada makes one that is resealable but it's high in the quote/unquote good fat. I'm a big fan of the ABB Choc PB RTD.. it has 2 grams of fat, 9 grams of carbs, and 50 grams of protein. It's of course not the best quality protein but for on the the go it's excellent...and the taste is very solid.

I like Nature's Best "Isopure 'Low Carb' Chocolate". In a cup of milk it tastes just like chocolate milk. I like to put a scoop over some cereal with milk for breakfast (or in oatmeal when it's colder out). Good stuff!

I like Pro5 by Nu-Tek (Nutrishop brand) and Pro-Complex by Optimum Nutrition the best for taste.

muscle milk is very good tasting. I've tried rootbeer float, blueberries and cream and another. Nectar apple ecstacy is the bomb; carribbean cooler is pretty good but i didnt like fuzzy navel. The first kind i ever tried was prolab whey and its just gross. Anyone tried muscle milk's brownie batter yet cause i want some now.

Yea man, ive tried brownybatter/banana creme/chocmintchip and browny batter is my fave, it tastes so realistic its perfect dude! tastes like a chocolate cake mix but better, crazy **** ey
