Yes they would work. Its good for a beginner but your gonna have to get more weights, a EZ curl bar, dumbells (get the ones that you can put weight on, dont get the solid ones IMHO) Then
read all the posts on workout programs try them out and stick with the ones that you feel most comfortable with and workout bro.

later.

It depends.
How big are you, how wide are your shoulders, how much can you lift, how much do you expect to lift in a year?
Think about those then look at how big and how well made this item is.
$50 is not a bargain if it only lasts you 3 months.
Ideally you should be able to get a 90° bend in you arms on bench and STILL grip INSIDE the supports.
If not, it is too small, spend a little extra to get something big enough. Stregth and safety are the keys to good home workout equipt.

well I am about 160, and sad to say but I am really weak when it comes to lifting.. So this would work for me I would think

Your best bet is to save for an Olympic bench. I have standard bench now, and I just started working out around a month ago. It took me three weeks to go from 70# to the 110# bench press that the set came with. I'm 6' 140# so in could never fit under that thing. But this is also my first post so take it as you like.

If I was developing a home gym from scratch and didn't want to spend a fortune this is what I'd buy today:

Powertec Power Rack w/dip & chin attachment $350

universal incline/decline Bench w/leg curl and preacher attachment $150 or so

plate lat machine with butterfly attachment $200-$250

300 lb. weight set $150

EZ curl bar $50

A set of hex dumbbells ($$$) or to save money 2 spin-lock handles and a selection of standard plates.

That setup will run a little over $1K and there are very few quality exercises you can't do with that equipment. Leg press is the only one that comes to mind.

If you aren't looking to spend much there are a heckuva lot of exercises that can be done with just dumbbells, a barbell, and a few plates.

Got to figure out some way to get some cardio in there too. Unless you run, box, or some other form of cardio a machine ($$$) is usually involved. One good way of getting one is to check local yard sales. People buy ellipticals, bikes, and stuff all the time ... end up hardly using them ... then sell them dirt cheap at yard sales. I have a decent stationary bike and elliptical machine in my home gym ... picked both of them up for $10 apiece at yard sales ... both had been barely used.

This thread is very interesting to me ... I'm in the process of upgrading my home gym right now.

Good luck with your training.
