would it be safe if i widened my grip on the c&j to try and prevent the bar from smacking collarbone? Or would this destroy my elbows?

No. The problem is that you aren't getting your elbows high enough. With your elbows high, the bar will rest on your delts, not your collarbone. It is easier to get your elbows high with a narrow grip.

There will be some collarbone contact. Though you will adjust to it with some time.

+1, The first time I did C&P with relatively heavy weight, my collarbone was all bruised up from not keeping elbows up.

Lol, I keep my elbows up and my collar bone still gets hit. My shoulders always end up with the biggest bruises though.

You are droppoing to far under the bar. I used to do that too. I was worried about getting under it, so I would end up like a foot under, and the bar would crash down on me.
