Hello my name is Nikki and I am getting married July 2, 2005 and I have been trying to tone up and lose a couple pounds. I started out in April at 152 lbs taking Hydroxy Cut... I try to run on my Gazzel everynight at 10pm for atleast a 1/2 hour while I watch General Hospital (hence my GHGirl screenname), for the other 1/2 hour I do situps and crunches and stretches. My diet consists of cutting out junk food (mostly chocolate cause its my weakness), no pop, no eating after 8, hydroxy cut, and drinking lots of water.
Bad thing is I dont eat Veggies!!

Age: 23
Weight: 142
Height: 5' 5
Waist: 32
Chest: 36C

I ate today:

No Breakfast
Lunch: Tuna Sandwhich
Snack 5 animal crackers
Dinner: Chicken Pitas with sour cream and cheese

Any suggestions?

EAT EAT EAT EAT and then EAT more! You need WAY more cals and you need to eat WAY more often!! Try to get 6 meals a day with a good combo of protein/fat/carbs at each meal. Look around at the other journals and look at some diets. You may also want to add some heavy lifting as it will increase your lean muscle mass and help you burn more cals, IF your nutrition is in check. Try www.fitday.com to log your cals and protein/carbs/fat.

Make sure to get some breakfast in, this will increase your metabolism for the day. Try some oats and a protein source. You may want to invest in whey protein also. Congrats on the upcoming wedding and I'm sure you'll find some great advice here!! Welcome :)

I almost spit up my cottage cheese laughing at the mental image of you running with a gazel on a leash. :D Then I re-read your email and realized that it must be a machine. I was wondering where on earth you would be living! lol! Ahh... meet Julie on a blonde day (just TEASING, you light-haired gals!)

ANYWAY, welcome! And congrats on your upcoming wedding! Exciting, and stressful. I just got married last year, and there was no way I could have possibly kept up a fitness routine while planning that event. I commend all you fit brides - :) Good work!

Now, to seg-way from my first paragraph (oh, why did I call attention to that again??) eat COTTAGE CHEESE! Egg whites, oats, yams, broccoli, tuna, salmon, skim milk, brown rice, chicken... Eat CLEAN. You need to eat protein and carbs with every meal. NOT BREAD and BAGEL type carbs, but quality carbs like yams, rice, oats... You need to EAT MORE, period. EAT EAT EAT!

If you don't eat enough, your body will continue to stay in starvation mode, and it will hang onto fat for dear LIFE, because it won't know when it's going to be fed again. Also, if you want any chance at putting on muscle (to create a more shapely and sexy physique) then you need to eat more than food than your body uses. Your body is going to use calories for daily functions, and if you don't eat those cals, it will steal them from your muscle (not FAT, muscle goes first). And there will be no energy left for your body to use to build muscle. So eat, honey! You'll also be much happier. :)

What does your dress look like? I'm thinking that you should really focus your attention on your shoulders, back and arms, and not worry too much about your legs for now. By all means, do leg exercises, but likely your arms are what's going to be showing in that gorgeous dress. I do a split like this:

Day 1: Legs/Shoulders
Day 2: Back/Biceps
Day 3: Chest/Triceps

And I work out 4 times per week, so every 3rd week I am doing one day twice.

Check out my journal if you want routine ideas, or any of the other women's journals, for that matter.

Sillyvent has good advice on sups, if you want to ask her about fat burners. I personally haven't used them, so I don't know what to recommend there.

Lift as heavy as you can without sacrificing form, and you will see results. You won't get big and manly, so don't even let that cross your mind. Ask anyone here - It's TOUGH to put on muscle, so you've really gotta work for it.

Do mostly compound exercises (squats, deadlifts, shoulder press, bench press) and if you want to do isolation exercises after that then add some in. You should always do your compound lifts first, though.

Squats are great for the toosh! (Just thought I'd throw that in there.)

Hmm... This is already a lot of reading, so I'm gotta submit and watch for questions. :) You've chosen a great place to come for help, though. I've learned TONS here! The ladies are awesome and very supportive and helpful.

Thank you so much for the comments Jewels and Rose! I will keep that in mind and try to eat 6 times a day and today is actually my Birthday! I am going grocery shopping so I will try to pick up some of the "good carbs" you have mentioned... and maybe pick up some 5lb weights to do rep work... I just do not have the time or money right now to go to the gym. WEDDING AHHHHHH lol anyways I would be so happy if I could lose 5 more pounds before my wedding. I am going to Mexico for my honeymoon and I am scared to be in a bikini again lol I need to tone tone tone..... this might sound weird and Jewels swallow first.... I drink ALOT of water so I go to the restroom alot and everytime I go I do 10 push-ups against the wall, and 10 dips against the sink LOL but I have noticed a BIG difference in my arms shoulders and neck!

I have decided to write in my journal what I ate the day before... cause I check this when I am at work that way I will not be guessing what I ate for dinner... cause I had spagetti last night... not chicken pita and I am making chicken pita tonight lol.... but I am eating my apple for breakfast *wink* thanks girls!

Welcome to the forum Nikki!
Honestly, I'm also new to all of this so I really don't have any information to give you. But I am also a HUGEEEEE general hospital fan. Actually, I'm a little obsessed. It's the only soap opera that I enjoy (it's the only one that sticks to reality unlike some ie: passions and days of our lives).

Good luck and I'll be watching! :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Okay, let's talk diet.

You need more calories.

Meal 1: A green apple is fine. Add a cup of yogurt, some oatmeal, some egg whites, or some protein powder.

Meal 2: Add some protein to this meal too -- I like mixing cereal or protein powder in my yogurt.

Meal 3: Tuna sandwhich -- this is fine. I like to mix my tuna with cottage cheese rather than mayo, lots of veggies, and whole wheat pitas.

Meal 4: This meal is good.

Meal 5: This meal is good.

You need more protein -- egg whites, protein powder, peanut butter, etc.

Sunny

I love getting feedback thank you! I have already took some of your advice... my fiance and I went shopping last night and I got a bunch of the items I saw from your journals. I bought cottage cheese... and I ate a spoonful last night... kinda gross... what can I mix with it? Strawberry yogurt?

Oh by the way I told my fiance about what I'm trying to do and he was like I want to eat healthy too! lol.... he is the same weight as me! At least I wont have to make 2 dinners! Cause I am trying to base some of what I eat on weight watchers point system... He kept saying how many points is that? LOL I said I dont have the book memorized!

Thanks Ladies :)

I HATE cottage cheese, the taste it horrible. I tried mixing it with strawberry yogurt and I still couldn't make myself eat it. I don't think it's just the taste that I don't like, it's also the texture. I don't like how it feels in my teeth!!! haha It's just one of those foods that I'll never be able to get used to.

Am I belated? Sorry! But HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love love love cottage cheese. :) A freak, perhaps? lol! Try cutting up bananas into it, or other fruit (blueberries, strawberries, melons, etc.) Maybe try a bowl of raspberries with a bit of cottage cheese on top and then eventually add more and more cottage cheese until it's a bowl of cottage cheese w/ some fruit on top. Ease yourself into it. But I just loved it from the start. You can always have milk instead, so don't force yourself to choke it down. You can also add splenda or something to jazz it up (but I don't). I find that FRESH ground pepper makes a huge difference.

GHGirl7205

My theory so far on cottage cheese is that I never wanted to try it because of the name.

Then I also could never figure out why people always ate it with fruit mixed in.... I dont eat cheese with fruit LOL

I think it tasted like sour runny mozzarella cheese.

But I will try it with your suggestions lol : )

MsJewels
06-09-2005, 12:09 PM
Running, sour mozzarella cheese! :D lol! Ahh... I think it's one of those love it or hate it foods. No biggie - there are tons of other things to eat. It's just an easy source of protein, that's all. There are others.

What type are you eating? I can only eat nofat.

The only way I eat cottage cheese is in lasagna :D

I have milk or yogurt instead. I know it is not as good for you but too bad.

2:25pm I was starving so I ate a handful of vanilla yogurt covered raisins
4pm 4 pinches of oats w/peanuts
7pm 1 cup 2% milk, rottisary chicken, garlic mash potatoes and a roll, Lemon cake for dessert.... my mom made me a birthday dinner and my favorite cake.

Total water 32oz

same sit-ups as last night... no time to run (what a loser) LOL

8:20am Honeynut Cheerios w/ 1% milk
How about 1/2 cup oats with berries mixed in? You also need a protein in this meal, like egg whites.

11am bananna, oats & 2 hydroxy cuts
How much oats are you having? You need a lean protein in this meal like 5oz chicken or 1 can tun?

1pm Brown Rice & chicken w/ a lil BBQ and multi vitamin
Do you know how much brown rice your having? BBQ is full of sugar. I would get rid of it

2:25pm I was starving so I ate a handful of vanilla yogurt covered raisins
You wouldn't be starving if you ate more during the day

4pm 4 pinches of oats w/peanuts
4 pinches of oats?

7pm 1 cup 2% milk, rottisary chicken, garlic mash potatoes and a roll, Lemon cake for dessert.... my mom made me a birthday dinner and my favorite cake.
How about skim milk? How much chicken? Change the white potato to sweet potato and I'd drop the roll.

Total water 32oz
same batheroom routine LOL (10 wall pushups and 10 dips everytime I go to the batheroom)
same sit-ups as last night... no time to run (what a loser) LOL

From lifting weights your not going to BAM become a bodybuilder. That takes years of heavy training.

Anyways even if you are trying to lose a few pounds, you need to eat more. Your body will go into starvation and you will not lose anything.

I second that!!! I've tried eating the same foods over and over again and I just cant do it. So I've decided that I'm just going to cut out junky foods and just eat healthy. I'll still try to eat so much protein/carbs/fats but as for eating chicken/fish/egg whites (yuck)/rice/oats etc. etc. EVERYDAY, it's just too much. In my opinion, you just can't limit yourself like that. I have a neighbour who is a bodybuilder and she diets like this for competitions and such but not so much out of competition; she's just careful of what she eats. And the gym owner at the gym I go to is a bodybuilder and he only diets for competition. He, himself, agrees that it's too much out of competition. And now I understand what he means!!!

Just clean up your eating a little bit and I'm sure you'll be fine!!! :)

Yay, but both your neighbour and the owner of the gym have probably already trained their body to an exceptional level, so they've done the groundwork and likely kept a pretty strict diet at that point. But by all means, eat what you like, so long as it's healthy! We're trying to suggest ways that will more quickly get you to where you want to be - Take what you like and leave the rest.

If you hate the food you're having to eat, then you won't stick with it. It might be as easy as more slowly making these switches. :)

Your wedding is so soon!!! Sorry to hear about your stress and family issues, I hope everything settles down soon so you can enjoy your wedding preparations (if thats possible??? weddings always sound stressful!!!)

For diet, I would suggest getting wholesome unprocessed foods as much as possible. Things like cheerios, pretzels, bars etc. should be treats or when you have no other options. And cranberries is not a good breakfast, you need some complex carbs, healthy fats and protein to go with that.

Take care and hope you feel better soon :)

You barely have any protein in your diet. No healthy fats. Just a lot of processed carbs.

Add some lean protein like ostrich, chicken, tuna, salmon, etc.

Just wanted to stop by and say hello. I haven't really been reading many journals lately; glad to see you are keeping up.

Just something I noticed: I'm no nutrition expert (yet!) but it doesn't look, to me, like you have enough protein in your diet. I took a peek at the list VB made for you and it looks great! Good Job VB! Maye try adding some protein sources in tomorrow (very important for building muscle). Keep up the good work though, you'll do great! :)

Your meals 2 and 4 should be changed. I recommend not drinking any calories with the exception of milk. Your body does not register liquid calories the same way it registers healthy food. Fiber is filling. Slimfast, orange juice and pretzels are going to leave you hungry. Eat an orange! Switch from whole wheat to 12 grain bread.

Find some nonstarch veggies (like carrots, sweet potato, brocolli) you love and eat a lot of them. It doesn't matter if they are from fresh or frozen, if you eat them raw or steamed. Just don't add fat to them. A fat free dressing is ok. AND add in some good complex carbs like brown rice, oats, 12 grain bread. You are going to be hungry late in the day if you keep eating so many empty carbs and drinking so many calories.

I havent been to the store yet and already had my meals planned for the day when I recieved your list and and going to try to go and pick up some of the items on the list tonight... sorry I am trying... I am not used to eating as much as you girls are telling me to and not used to eating a certain way yes the suggestions are welcome!!

MY GOAL: I am trying to get down to 130lbs.... eventually but my short term goal looking good and toning up some before my wedding that is July 2nd... and I am doing this with a lower budget than usual and less time and on a stressful mindset. I was 152lbs... I am now 141lbs... not bad I dont think... I started taking hydroxy cut because the GNC guy said it will increase my metabolism and energy... he said not everyone changes their diet and takes it.... which I know u should! That is why I try to run everynight and do situp push-ups and leg lifts. I am not looking to become a bodybuilder... Just to feel good about myself... and I am already accomplishing that... This is just to hold myself accountable for what I eat... and get healthier eating suggestions from you all!

Do u really eat ostrich? Never tried it hehe

Yes I do eat ostrich.

Well I'll tell you this. Eating clean is A LOT cheaper then what you think.

Oats are dirt cheap.
Tuna is like 60-75cent a can.
Fresh and frozen veggies are very cheap.
When chicken goes on sale you should buy 4-5 packages.

Trust me. You will save a lot of money eating the kinds of foods on that list

Ok. July 2nd is a couple weeks away. If you continue to eat the way you do, you will not see any changes. Running everynight and not eating enough is going to make you hold onto any of the weight you want to lose.

5-6meal a day. 200-300calories in each meal with minimum of 20g protein and some carbs and healthy fats. That is what you should be doing.

Edit: Don't list to the GNC guy. Hydroxycut is so bad for you it isn't even funny.

Bump VB...a lot of us here do not want to be bodybuilder's either, and some do. I just want to lose body fat and get "lean". I am accomplishing this by eating 1800-1900 cals a day, lifting HEAVY weights, and doing cardio 4-5 times per week. I have made a lot of progress in one month. I know your wedding is only a couple weeks away but we are just concerned for your overall health. You won't be able to enjoy yourself at your wedding if you aren't eating enough. I did the same thing for my wedding that you are doing now, and yes, I lost weight on the scale---but it was water and muscle, barely any fat. And after the wedding I gained it all back plus about 5 lbs. It has been tough to get it off because of what I put my body through before. Especially if you are taking hydroxycut, you need to eat more. That stuff wreaks havoc on your bod---and the guy at GNC is just trying to sell you something, believe me!

To put this bluntly, 130lbs by July 2nd is a very unrealistic goal. That is 11 pounds in 2 weeks....BAD! I know you are feeling good about your current weight loss but when will it stop? And when you return to eating normally, you will gain the weight back most likely. And you CANNOT live on what you are eating now forever, so I think that you may need to re-evaluate your goals and way to achieve them. This can be after the wedding if it must but we are all just concerned and want you to be healthy :) Good luck.

#2 I think you read my goals wrong or maybe I didnt write them clearly... to get to 130lbs is my long term goal... looking good for my wedding it my short term goal...

I did get to the store on my lunch break and I bought a bunch of the things Vanilla Bean suggested.... I am looking forward to your suggestions when I start to implement them in my diet!

Thanks!

SORRY! "Bump VB" was just to say to listen to Vanilla Bean's advice.

Okay Okay, I am a dumba$$...anyhoo, still I think you know what is good for you and what you need to be doing as far as eating goes. I am relieved that you don't want to lose that weight before your wedding!!!! WHEW!

Once you get back from the grocery store post your new diet and we'll help you as much as possible :D Sorry again, I read that quickly and didn't see "eventually" hehehehehe...have a good day :)

Hey girls I finally started the fitday.com website.... awesome btw but how do I know what amount of calories I should eat?
My BMI is 23.... thats normal right?

BMI means nothing. The BMI says that highly muscular people are obese. Ignore the BMI. It doesn't work unless you are sedentary because muscle weighs more than fat.

What you want to know is your BMR - basal metabolic rate ie. the number of calories you burn at rest. This calculation will be off a bit (usually +- 200 cals) but it isn't too bad. There are lots of calculators that do this. I think there is one in fitday too. Click the side tabs in fitday.

This is an improvement! Meals 4 and 5 are too small but knowing the cals in restaurant food you probably made up for it.

Hey ladies! heres what I ate!

Meal 1 English muffin w/ cream cheese, and a 1/2 ofyogurt (99% ff)
Ok. You can buy ezekiel english muffins but you should eat a better carb source, like oats. You could also replace the cream cheese with natural PB or even cottage cheese.

Meal 2 Tuna sandwhich on wheat
How much tuna? 1 can? Wheat bread is just white with dyes in it. Ezekiel or spelt bread is much better.

Meal 3 1/4 cup of almonds and a 1/4 of yogurt covered raisins
Almonds are a great source of fats. :) The yogurt covered raisins arn't great though. So, You might wanna replace them with cottage cheese, oatmeal, sweet potatos and some type of protein.

Meal 4 banana
I would only have a banana pre or post workout.

Meal 5 Slim fast Shake
This is how I look at it: If you can afford to buy those..then you can buy protein powder!

Meal 6 Chicken Quesadillas (3) w/ a sherly temple
If you do go out to eat, you should just get a grilled chicken salad. That meal probably had around 800-1000 calories. It's scarey the extra stuff they add (Like chicken lard)

40oz water
only 2 blocks of a walk (I was kicked out of my house for the bachelor party!)

Still need some more water.
Can you goto the gym at all?

I still think you need to get some more protein.

hehe the Slimfasts were given to me by my cousin that is pretty much why I have them. She had extra money on her food plan at school and bought them.... but anyways I really dont remember all my meals this weekend I went to Niagara Falls for Saturday night and Sunday morning....

Saturday...
Wheat english muffin w/ cream cheese
1 can of tuna mixed with handful of almonds
banana and cranberries
LA Lasagna and a LOT of alchol dont worry most of it was puked up in the morning and walked and danced off throughout the night.

Sunday...
Lots of water
apple juice, country fried potatoes, and wheat bread
2 pieces of 12 grain toast sprayed with no fat spray
more water and lots of sleeping

Could have been way worse right? I still tried to eat 1/2 way healthy even though the girls were making fun of me.... :)

Oh ya! I had LOTS of fun!!

Doesn't mean you HAVE to drink them. Catch my drift?

Oh no..don't worry about stuff that goes into your mouth becuase...yeah puking it up is the answer.

Wow. If I could only say what I'd like to, to that coment.

If they make fun of you...who cares? People at school made fun of me cause of the smell of tuna(i brought it to eat almost everyday). I didn't give a ****.

At that calorie level your protein should be around 30% of your calories. Dropping your carbs down to 40% would fix that. Ok, meals 1-4 look "decent" not great just decent.

At the very least I'd replace the chicken stuffing and corn with 4 oz. chicken + 1/8 cup almonds and change meal 4 to 1/8 cup cranberries (if they are dried) + 1/8 cup almonds + 2 oz. chicken

WOW that's a lot of fat! lol Fat should stay around 20%. Maybe you had too many almonds? And the mac and cheese probably didn't help either! You definitely need more protein. I know you are only trying to lose a little bit of weight to feel good about yourself but protein is sooo very important. Without enough protein it will take you much longer to reach your goal. Have you considered buying protein powder? One scoop of protein powder can easily add ~20 grams of protein and is great for post-workout. (I'm catching on, I've learned a little bit!! haha)

I just bought Whey Gourmet Cookies n Cream and I LOVE it!!! I've seen a few people say that it makes them sick, but it hasn't done anything to me. I'm not one for vanilla so I wouldn't suggest that.

ratio of carbs/fat/protein is fine. Foods chosen are fine. Now you just have to eat more of them. Try to get the water up to 60 oz. Starving yourself for 9 days will just make you feel worse mentally and not change your body. Visible changes take at least 1 month and that is assuming you are doing the right things. Get those calories up to 1500 minimum each day. Add food to meals 1,2, and 4 to achieve this.

As for the toning thing.. you can't get lasting results in 9 days. What Clare (spytechswife) said will help. Do a jog + a high rep circuit style routine the morning of to make the muscles have pump. You can also do stomach vacuums. But you should have started those before.. You stand up straight and suck in your stomach as hard as you can (keep breathing) and do it 3 times for 30 sec to 1 minute.

Then after the honeymoon get right back to trying to be healthy immediately. When you get that gym membership we'll be able to help you better.

Hey we are the same height and about the same weight!! (I weigh a bit more) I have trouble in my abs and hips as well. There are some great sites and books you could look into (after your wedding). www.stumptuous.com is one of them, this website has tips on how to use household products as weights and has a dumbbell only workout, which can be done at home. ;) If you want to look at my journal it has great advice from plenty of people, it's Terryocean's start to get fit!

Ps. Benches and weights are pretty cheap at walmart if your looking into that.

Pss. We are the same height and about the same weight, YOU NEED TO EAT MORE CALORIES!!! I need to have atleast 1600-1800, so I would say so do you... 1015 is not enough hun, it's about starving...

Congrats on the wedding and I am glad to see you are trying to get this down as am I!!! We can do this!

I post alot in other areas! I have just been keeping track of my diet on fitday.... I got started on the right track and thats all I needed really with the online journals... I want to start a journal again when I get a more regular routine... I got a set of really nice dumb bells... and am looking into an at home gym... $55 a month for both my husband and I to go to the gym is just kind not worth it when we can just buy an awesome in home gym for the price of years membership... so we are researching that.

I have just been doing total body work out on Tuesday and Thursday and jogging on my gazzel for 1/2 hour afterwards.

Then on Monday Wednesday and Friday I run for 1 hour. (during General Hospital LOL)

The wedding was awesome! Turned out even better than I thought it would!! lots of fun! glad all my hardwork and stress paid off!
We went to Mexico for our honeymoon and I took advantage of the swimming and their gym there at the resort... good thing we didnt go on our honeymoon 2 weeks later or Emily would have had us for dinner!
Anyways I am down to 140lbs... but am seeing alot of differences mainly in my arms and face... a lil all over!

Thanks for asking about me!!
