hi, what is a good one. probably one that can hold like 8 rounds or so.

i also like ones that have the pistol-grip handle on them too.

I'd refer you to Nuggz for this one..... but he is within 24 hours of departing for Israel.... so you're basically on your own..... God speed Nuggz!

In my opinion, any pump action will be good. Most come stock with six shell capacity, a mag extender will give you an extra shell or two. Any post production add-ons will be relatively easy to put on the shotgun.

Remington 870 FTW or a Mossberg 590 FTW.... shouldnt run you more than $350-700 for a decent new one. You could also get a Benelli or a Wilson Combat, but those are something a bit more on the expensive time.

i was looking at some benelli's, this one caught my attention.

i liek the grip on it, i saw it at gander mountain today i liked the aiming style on it (the circle and the 3 prongs) felt pretty comfortable.

Mossberg 500(w short barrel) or 590, or Remington 870 'Tactical' or 'Express Synthetic 7round' or similar models. Remington and Mossberg pump 12 gauges are your best bets, especially on a limited budget.
Whatever you get, avoid the shotguns with longer 24-28" hunting barrels and short shell tubes. Go for the 'tactical' style pump 12 gauges like those listed above that have an 18-20" barrel and full length 7-9 shot shell tube. The full length shell tube is not as important as the short barrel, but its a good idea to go ahead with the full length shell tube as well if you can.
Use buckshot, not birdshot, for home defense. Birdshot is good/cheap for practice.

There are many variations of the following models, but this gives you the basic idea of what Im talking about-

870 Tactical:

870 Express Synthetic 7 round(cheaper than the "Tactical" Remingtons):

Mossberg 590:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/d/dc/20070127230232!Shotgun_Mossberg_590.jpg

There are also models that come with combat lights on them. Or as more commonly done- you can buy an aftermarket mount and light to put on any shotgun. I personally wouldnt have a primary home defense longgun without a light on it. I keep a handheld combat light with my handgun at all times as well- either beside it while off my body at home or elsewhere, or the light is on me if Im carrying the handgun on me.

The M4s a good gun and all.... but it's hella expensive compared to the 870 and the 590.

The sight style on the M4 is called a "ghost ring" system.... it's great for precision shooting of say, slugs and tactical loads and what not.... but if you're using your shotgun for home defense a bead sight will do just fine considering the typical "home defense" engagement ranges would be within 10 yards, most likely less. Don't worry about flashy accessories, maybe a flashlight to adapt to it at most.

IMO, for home defense purposes, go with the reliability of the 870, or the 590, get a mag adaptor for it so you'll be hovering between six and nine rounds, plus one in the chamber, get a flashlight for it as well if you're seriously thinking about things to adapt to your gun, go with a light... this is a good one IMO

http://www.surefire.com/maxexp/main/co_disp/displ/prrfnbr/484/sesent/00/Momentary-and-constant-on-switching

A pistol grip is not a bad idea, but I would keep the stock if I were you, it ensures reliability concerning accuracy and helps to control the recoil (meaning you'll be able to put more rounds on the target), there are excellent pistol grip/full stock add-ons availiable out there. Also, if you really are concerned about home defense, and think someone might try to take your weapon from you, a sling is not a bad investment either. A "Snap-Sling" or an "Assault Sling" would be good investments. Check blackhawk.com or police/military suppliers for good, reliable slings.

I'd suggest the Remington 870.

Do a search, should be loads of threads about shotguns.

I have to agree with BlueBayou and guest89. The mossberg and remington pumps are going to be your best bet - they always work no matter what, there's a ton of aftermarket stuff for both and both models will be around forever.

first, what county and state are you in?

2nd, if youre in the USA:

Dont bother with a Benelli if you want more than a 5 round magazine and a pistol grip stock

Federal law prevents any imported shotgun from having both a pistol grip stock AND more than a 5 round magazine

I personally have a M1 Super 90, love the thing, but the federal import law is ridiculous when it comes to the magazine/pistol grip stock thing

You cant go wrong with a Remington 870

ill probably have to consider a 870 now. i like their 12 gauge model with the pistol grip, but the butt on it seems rather chinsey.

i kinda liked the butt on the benelli where its solid, not just a little bar coming out.

this model is nice http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/premier_dealer_exclusives/model_870_express_7-shot_20-ga.asp

but its 18 gauge, 12 gauge is more powerful and is probably better for home

bump to this

OR... if $ is a major concern and you want the bestest cheapest home defense firearm you can get-

- Go to your local pawn shop that sells used shotguns
- Buy a $125 used basic 12 gauge pump shotgun
- If its got a long hunting barrel, saw the barrel to 18 1/2 inches (18 inches is minimum in the US)
- File/sand to clean up the muzzle where you cut it
- Get some gunmetal blue in the sporting goods section of Wal-Mart or a gun store and put it on the muzzle where you cut it
- Feed it some 00 buckshot from Wal-Mart or gun store

Walla! Home defense shotty for less than $150!

Id go for the 870 Marine Magnum or any side-by-side double barrel with exposed hammers.

I prefer the Mossberg over the Remington due to the location of the safety. Quicker to use the thumb to turn off the safety. Both are excellent home defense shotguns and very reliable.

Cool and all, but I gotta have a buttstock on my scatterguns..... also, if you ever drop that thing in the sand you're screwed! How are you supposed to find it if it's camo'd out like that? Gone forever!

Wow strong bump, didn't want to start a new thread on this.

I'm kind of bouncing around the idea of doing this myself rather than buying a new gun. I'm going to call around this upcoming week and price some different models. I've kind of got my eye on this mossberg 500sp, which I should be able to get for under 400:
http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/images/38819.jpg

also looking at some 870's, but it just depends on how much I can get for my $. I guess if it comes down to it I might look for a pawn shop deal and look to modify it myself.

I really like mossbergs, but imho, pistol grips do not work well on them.

1. The slide release is tough to get at. You can it, its that little indent on the grip.

2. The tang safety is tough to get at with a pistol grip imho. Its on top of the gun.

I think if yer gonna go pistol grip you should prolyl go an 870. The slide release is unobstructed by the grip because its in front of the trigger guard, and the safety is in on the trigger guard too.

what no mention os the saiga-12?

I have the tri-rail on mine with a flashlight and pistol grip mod and 10 round clip, best home defense gun ever

the saiga 12 is a little expensive for just a standard home defense shotgun.

I went looking at shotguns a couple days ago. I went to three different stores, all of their selections sucked. Im going to wait a couple months before looking again.

o'rry?

So.....we spend $500 on a rifle and $400 on a scope for hunting, but $600 for something to protect you and your family is too much?

....interesting

Im not saying its too much for the gun enthusiast, as we drop assloads of money on firearms in case SHTF and whatnot.

For the average person who wants a home protection shotgun, the mossberg 500 or Remington 870 will probably do the trick.

I was actually looking at the mossberg persuader. 8 shots of 12 for around $300 bucks.

I've been hearing people say the NEF's shotguns are getting good reviews. Basically an 870 clone. Gander Mountain sells them for between 150 and 200 I think.

I have heard otherwise about the NEF. Its a New England Firearms, which was bought out by Marlin. But I believe they are made in china, and the guy at Dick's said the gun is crap.

But for $200, you could give it a try.

Id stick with mossberg or remington.
