I don't know where else to put this, so I put it in this forum...
I am an avid weightlifter and bodybuilder...I haven't competed for about four years due to school and my job, but I still train like a dedicated champion.
I have a back problem called Spondylolysis. It is basically a stress fracture in the L5 that never really heals with anything other than cartilage. Its irritating to know its there, even though it really doesn't affect my weightlifting very much. Sometimes it gets "pissed off" and I need to take some ibuprofen.
I have recently been getting increased irritation in my back, probably because of long hours at work (I am a programmer, believe it or not).
Spondylolysis can (rarely) turn into Spondylosthesis, which is a more serious condition where the spine actually starts to slip forward.
I want to avoid this from being possible.
I have read many studies and talked to Chiropractic experts that say If caught early, especially as an adolescent, some will actually show signs of healing in a 0 degree brace.
I am 25. It feels like my time is running out to get this type of brace. I would be willing to try it, even if there isn't a 100% chance. I am getting older, and I worry about getting so old that my chances of this thing healing get further and further away.
The problem is, whenever I bring this up to the doctors, they blow me off and say that only a percentage of cases of Spondylolysis actually become Spondylosthesis.
I want to try this brace, i feel its worth a shot!
I am so depressed, because my HMO won't let me go around the country asking different experts for advice.
Does anyone else have Spondy?
What should I do? Why do the doctors seem to want to just let this thing go when research shows that there is a chance it could heal? Am I going to the wrong type of doctor, or is there something that they aren't telling me?
HELP!!!
