I was watching a health program over the weekend, and there was a woman who had lost over 90lbs. She was going into surgery to remove the excess skin left on her stomach. This poised a question for me. I have over 90lbs to lose. Once I lose the weight, will I have excess skin?

I don't have what some would call a stomach that hangs over. My weight is mostly solid fat. But I'm concerned. I can't afford plastic surgery!!!

Any thoughts on this????

This varies with the individual. Factors include genetics and age. Skin can bounce back. It generally doesn't happen quickly, but will tighten up gradually over time.

Good luck with your weight loss.

It depends on the elasticity of your skin, and this is usually genetic. This is also the case for whether or not you might have stretch marks after loosing the weight. There are some people who loose 100lbs and their skin relatively bounces back, where someone else might loose 50lbs and have some hanging skin. It also depends how fast you loose the weight. A lot of these people who have a lot of skin loose a lot of weight rather quick, from gastric bypass or a similiar surgery.

mommykuce: I have pretty good genes. I'd like to think that after I lose the 90 lbs that I won't have either streach mark or extra skin. I will just have to wait and see.

Thanks

I have had 3 children and with each gained 100 pounds and then lost the 100 pounds. After my last child, I got into weight training and reduced my body fat and became fit and toned. However, due to my 3 pregnancies (i.e. 3 bouts of excessive weight gain and loss), I had some sagging skin on my lower abdominal area. No matter how toned and thin I got, that skin over top my abdomin did not show my lower abs well. Additionally, when you are bending over, that skin hangs and looked nasty. I did end up getting a mini tummy tuck (meaning below the belly button) and I can't say enough about it. Yes, it was expensive and painful, but well worth it. I had an excellent doctor who did a fantastic job and the incision has healed beautifully. If you were to see it, you would think C-section, not tummy tuck. Now I can wear low rise jeans and show my abs. They look more toned and defined because the excess skin covering them is tighter. Genetically, I have thin skin. You may or may not have sagging skin after your weight loss, but if you do and you chose to get rid of it, get an excellent doctor who has a lot of experience. Also, don't get this surgery if you plan on having kids afterwards, it will be a waste of money then. Wait until after you have all the kids you want. Also, try not to rush into it. You may want to wait a year or so after your weight loss to ensure that you can keep your weight off. Otherwise your skin will sag again and your surgery will have been a waste. (Having spent the money on it is incentive enough not to get fat again)....

liebegirl: Thanks for sharing. I don't have any children, and will never have children so that's not a worry. My skin is thick, I would say and it's not sagging, except the breast. That would be an area of concern for me. Will I be able to buiild up my chest enough to raise my breast once the fat is reduced so they don't hang over my waist???? :-)

I gained about 60lbs with my last pregnancy, and I now have sagging skin in my ab area. And the thinner I am getting the worse it looks. I have had some results from using a firming cream, but I will probably end up getting a tummy tuck when I get to my goal weight. I don't know how expensive it will be, I just hope there are payment options!

As a personal trainer, I always tell women to train their chest if for no other reason other than to become stronger. Keep in mind that as females, our ability to "build our chest muscles" fall far short to those of men. Never the less, yes, your breasts may look "higher" if you build your chest, or they may not. But that will not solve a sagging skin problem. Building your chest will only enlarge your chest muscle, not enlarge your breasts or fill out loose skin around your breasts. Do not expect significant differences in the look of your breasts simply from building stronger chest muscles. If you are truely unhappy with sagging skin on your breasts, perhaps a breast lift and/or implants may make you happier. That is totally up to you. Remember, breasts are composed of fat and when you become leaner, women tend to lose breast fat and the result is smaller breasts. No amount of working out is going to change that. .... Good luck...
