What is the absolute BEST protein bar that you have ever tried? Reply and let us know what protein or energy bar is your favorite because of taste and nutritional content. Describe the taste, and tell us what flavors are the best.

Thanks for helping many others!

I'll start. I am still addicted to Next OneWay bars. I keep thinking that I will switch to something else for a change, but I can't do it. I have one every morning.

I just want to find a bar that can function as a meal replacement.

Everything on the market now is either full of sugar, or sugar-alcohols....

I want carbs.......it's just that I want good carbs!!

MHP, "Up your mass" bars.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/mhp/massbars.html

Crunchy, and tasty, and not terrible ingredients. However they are probably the most expensive bars on the market, so there is that.

Of, course you could make your own too. :)

For me, it doesn't get any better then ABB's cookies & Cream Steel Bars. They taste so good, and the flavor is right on. Tastes just like cookies and cream. 16g of protein too. Sure, it has 22g of sugars, but I'm not looking for an overly nutritional bar. I want something better for you then a candy bar in-between a meal. The bars that are low in sugars suck IMO. I am all about the taste, and a decent amount of protein.

I bought 2 boxed of Labrada Lean Protein bars they were high in protein ( i forgot exact amount) but they tasted real good. The flavors I had were cookie crisp and caramel almond. Will probably buy again soon.

i LOVE the oneways too. i buy the small versions at walmart for 96 cents each (u can get the big ones online or at GNC or something.) anyways, the 1.5 oz oneway has:

CALS 170
FAT 6g (3 sat.)
CARB 15g (6 sugar)
PROT 15g

i didnt see any sugar alcohols in the ingredients, but one of the last ingredients is sucralose (splenda).

they taste so good though, better than a snicker to me.

I just received my order of MHP Macrobolic protein bars. I bought a box of the smores and peanut caramel. Best tasting bars I've tried yet.

6 grams fat
38 grams carbs (only 3 from sugar)
21 grams protein

I've been looking for a protein bar that will serve as a meal replacement with little or no sugar.

I am a big fan and user of Protein Bars since I'm always on the go. Labrada makes great bars I like his carb watchers, and his new Cookie Protein Bars are great, I like the oatmeal peanut butter choc. chip flavor. Up your mass are good too. Oh Yeah bars by ISS are great if you crave that candy bar taste but want some good protein too. The Protein 40 bars are good because they have 40 grams of protein. Scit-fit's Truth bars are really satisfying the Absolutley coconuts flavor tastes like a Payday. Protein Bars overall are getting better and getter in taste as companies are trying to out do each other.

It's not 100g of whey. The bar itself weighs 100g. It's generally about 27g protein.

I was just wondering, does anyone know what the net carbs mean on some of the bars. Like on them it says it doesn't influence blood sugar, but then they're still included in the calorie count.. Are these types of carbs better than just eating normal carbs?

Net carbs = sugars. The other carbs may be fiber, or sugar alcholos which do not raise blood sugar level. It's helpful for diabetics, and there's something to be said about not spiking blood sugar if you're trying to avoid adding fat. That said, a cal is a cal!

It's not a bad profile, relatively speaking. My issue is not so much the sugar content, but rather the mislabelling. 2.5 x more than listed is pretty significant!

The best protein bar I have ever used is the Labrada Lean Body, in peanut butter. It has 32 grams of protein, 28 grams of carbs, 7 grams of fat, and 160 mg. of potassium. I can, easily, eat 3 bars a day, every day! They taste fantastic, especially when refrigerated. I recommend the Lean Body bar to all serious bodybuilders.

Protein bars were the first "nutrition" thing I got into years ago. I have tried nearly everyone imaginable, and I must concur that Trioplex are the best tasting----------and probably one of the healthiest. Consider this:

1. They are more of a true meal replacement (considering the calories, fat,
protein, etc.) and are probably one of the thickest.
2. They taste like food, not like cement mix (I LOVE that one)
3. They don't contain sugar alcohols (that I saw----let me know if I missed
it somewhere).
4. Like Met-Rx they are great for the car because they won't melt considering
they are not chocolate coated-------no maltitol!

Still, that said, I agree that shakes are superior. I am seriously thinking of drinking a good meal replacement shake in the mornings (like Myoplex) blended with some fruit. The bars are just too costly, and you probably are better off nutritionally with the shakes. Then I can do a good post-workout shake, and maybe one before bed. Not sure yet.

Since i weight in the 130s i dont need a gobs and gobs of protein, so i just aim for natural energy bars or replacements, but after a good workout, its great to grab an ABB cookies and cream, or a promax bar(look out for the trans fat in these) but my favorite after workout is big 100 peanut butter grahamMMMMMmmm. to take advantage of the sugar and protein

My favorite bars of all time are the Labrada Texas Pecan Pie Lean Body bars.
These things are a real blessing when you're craving something sweet but you dont want to (or cant) eat a ton of sugar. Especially at night when managing insulin counts the most, these bars are awesome. I love pecan pie anyways, so this is a way to get the taste without giving in to the craving. These bars dont just have the flavor either like others - they actually have pecan chunks that you can see. The protein content is fairly high, too, and they're fortified with some minerals, which is also good. I've had other bars that tasted good but were either loaded with fats, sugars, or didnt meet lable claim (Chef Jay's trio-plex bars come to mind).

My recent picks are:

Clif Builder (2 for 1 at Walgreens the last week or two, or 2/$1.59!): decent flavor, crunchy "rice krispie" bottom covered with cement mix top layer. Note, the 2 layers are not adhered, so you can peel apart the layers and eat them separately. I actually like the cement mix layer on its own. Yes, I was one of those that de-layered my LLittle Debbie Nutty Bars as a kids...

Detour: ONLY caramel peanut. Note the other flavors taste good, but upon reading the label, of the 3 flavors I purchased, only the caramel peanut did NOT have sugar alcohols in it, while the other flavors (peanut butter and smores) had about 12-13g of maltitol. Buyer beware - variations abound even between different flavors of the same product, and even when not labeled "low carb"... Note: this information IS posted on the Designer Whey website under the product info.
[A side note on Designer Whey.... the real difference between the Detour/OneWay/UTurn product lines seems to be that Detour Caramel Peanut has sugar sweetener, the rest of Detour has sugar alcohols and Splenda, and the OneWay/UTurn lines both use Splenda with sugar. All have partially hydrogenated oil, bummer....]

ProMax: yes, I agree with the cookies n cream rave reviews.

The only two bars I eat are the promax cookies and cream and the detour caramal peanut. in terms of nutrition the promax is good for me if i'm in a pinch and need something with protein quick, but it isn't super healthy. the detour bar is pretty good. 30g of protein in it, not too much sugar. tastes like a snickers bar. i use it immediately after workouts because i don't like making a shake at the gym or taking one with me. just my 2 cents.

Homemade Protein Bars are THE best... I used MagicPunt's MRBs Recipe... SOO Good! messy... but SO good! my parents tried some when I was living at home, and they actually called me up and asked me if i still had the recipe so that they could make some if that tells u anything. Also the nutritional value is 285 calories, 11g GOOD fats, 26g Carbs, 21g Protein in one bar, batch makes 8:

-3c Oats
-1/2c Natural Peanut Butter
-1c Skim Milk
-4 scoops Chocolate Protein Powder
-Dash of Cinnamon
-top with Splenda

mix it all in a bowl and put in a glass or cooking tray and stick in fridge

EAS PeanutButter Carmel is too good.
Zone Perfect Choc PB is pretty good as well. (Can get 6/box for $5)
Detour flavor that most have talked about is okay but does have a strange aftertaste (Cheap too 15/box for $13 at Sam's Club)

Don't eat two South Beach Diet Bars in the same day. They will tear your ass up for a couple of days! I need to try some others but I usually won't pay more than a buck or buck and a quarter for a bar.

If you want an actual mrp bar with whole grain carbs and good protein, as I stated before you can't beat Chef Jay's Tri-O-plex bars and Promax's Oatrageous bars. Personally, I find the taste of the cookies and cream flavor to be totally repulsive. They are ranked pretty high on taste...so i was looking forward to them when I bought a box - i was totally dissapointed, but thats not to say that its a bad product - just my personal preference.

I like the Lean Body Bars by Labrada - the flavors are awesome.

My opinion on this is that looking strictly from the nutritional value(and not taste), ISS Research Pro42 bars would have to be at the top of the list, and they are the top selling bars. They have 1g of sugar for 380calories. Its almost like a complete meal replacement without gaining sugar fat.

Most other bars have like at least 10grams of sugar for that caloric intake.

Does anyone think that having sugar in the bar is good at any time, and why?

I started out on detour bars. They tasted incredible, I will be the first to say that. Just check out the labels, around 30 g of sugars and anywhere from 5 to 7 grams of saturated fat and relatively little fiber. You're pretty much eating a snickers bar with a lot of protein added in. Most of the good tasting energy bars fall into this trap. When I started a cutting cycle, I went looking for a better bar, and I found Promax Oatrageous. About half the sugars of most bars (14 g), and only 2 g of saturated fat and 5 g of fiber. The remainder of the carbs are from oats which are a very good carb source. Taste is also quite good (peanut butter chocolate chip), though not nearly as potent as the detour stuff.

I might try that out.

The only time I use a bar is during a bike ride when I'm on the road. I'll usually take some type of 30/40/30 bar or other protein/carb bar especially one that has a *some* sodium in it mainly because I'm drinking so much water.

Brad4321

I love the designer bars, particularly One-Way. I tried the Detour and it's alright, a bit like a Snickers-lite. But it doesn't even compare to the One-Way bar. It's really filling, and sweetened with Splenda. Check out these stats:

(Per Serving)
Energy: 1255kJ (300 Cal)
Protein: 30g
Fat, total: 8g
-saturated: 4g
Carbohydrates, total: 26g
-sugars: 12g
Sodium: 280mg
Potassium: 340mg
Calcium: 140mg
Iron: 0.7mg
Phosphorus: 140mg

Also, props are due to Met-RX Protein Plus bars, and EAS Myoplex bars. Oh, and Dorian Yates' Pro Bar II. All of these products are superb in their own right, great for a pre-workout energy rush or just a meal on their own.
And a bit of advice: when making home-made protein bars, be sure to use dark chocolate for those all-important cocoa bean flavanoids that crush cancer.

do the UTurn or OneWay bars have sugar alcohol in them?

You might as well have a snikers and a shake. Same thing. Bars are so full of fillers and binders not to mention all that suger. The only way I'd let one of my clients eat a protein bar is and that's a big if....they simpley can't get through the day without something sweet.

KD1
08-11-2005, 12:46 PM
why is it that after I eat a protein bar I feel sick to my stomach?

Because like me, you are sensitive to the sugar alcohols in them. The worst offender is "maltitol syrup" it will make me fart like crazy and then a few hours later, take a huge chocolatey dump.

What is the absolute BEST protein bar that you have ever tried? Reply and let us know what protein or energy bar is your favorite because of taste and nutritional content. Describe the taste, and tell us what flavors are the best.

Thanks for helping many others!

I did have a few that I really liked but I cant remember their names, but the ones I do like are the soft ones which are like nougart rarther then the hard ones where it takes more effort to eat them than a whole chuffin meal. I have to ask, I somtimes see protein bars which say 50g of protien, is this really true I mean come on there has to be some sort of scam with it, is it really good quality protien or is it shnide?

I've tried out a great deal of bars and here are my thoughts.

Someone mentioned Protein 2 Go bars, yes they are pretty tasty but they contain a fair amount of HF Corn Syrup. Along the same lines are Promax bars, I believe the first ingredient is Corn Syrup.

Onto the good.

Tri-o-Plex bars - I'm a big fan of these in particular the Peanut Butter Banana due to the higher amounts of fibre in them (5 or 6 grams)

Myoplex Chocolate Chocolate Chip - Just tasty

Lebrada Lean Body cookie bars - It's been covered by many people, these bars are amazing.

I am a Weight Loss Surgery patient, not a body builder. So, for my needs, I love the Power Crunch bars.

These are called "snack bars" but have 14g of protein and low carbs. I like three of the four flavors. Peanut butter, cookies and cream, and french vanilla. The triple choc. is too much.

I buy from bodybuilding.com and get a good price if order in quantity. I pay 13.xx for a box of twelve + shipping, etc. I also, in an emergency, can find the bars in another town.

I love the taste, must have protein supplements, and need a treat. This bar serves all my needs.

Pure Protein really is the best tasting protein bar I have had, enough so that you want to eat on its own, not just to get your protein allotment. I like smores, blueberry, and choc chip isnt bad. I usually just eat a regular cliff bar, peanut butter flavor, as this is the closest tasting thing to food I have ever gotten from a bar form. Ive tried their builder bars, and they arent bad at all either. Powerbar protein plus choc. pb flavor pretty good, vanilla not so good.

As for tri-o-plex, I find them terrible. I would describe them as a thick, dry, block of cement. I think im going to give away my remaining bars.

Yeah, Big 100 Colossal is great. I've been using those for awhile now. Check the Sunday papers cuz there's often coupons for those as well as their Protein Plus bars. Pure Protein puts out coupons alot too and those are good bars.

I ended up buying a couple of Nitro Tech bars because they were on clearance at Vitamin Shoppe due to exp. date. They were only $0.50 but it was the worst $0.50 I ever spent. Bluberry flavor, but it tasted like someone threw up a bluberry pie and then I had to eat it. Trip to the john later confirmed my suspicion that Muscle Tech truly sucks. I should have known better than to use a MT product, clearance or not.

Yeah, Big 100 Colossal is great. I've been using those for awhile now. Check the Sunday papers cuz there's often coupons for those as well as their Protein Plus bars. Pure Protein puts out coupons alot too and those are good bars.

I am going to do a search as well, but how do you make your own bars? What ingredients do you use and how do you prepare them?

I am going to do a search as well, but how do you make your own bars? What ingredients do you use and how do you prepare them?

It's easy:

You need to have around 250gr of oatmeal, 1 cup skimmed milk powder, 3 scoops of choco protein (better have a blend) 30gr peanutbutter.
Mix it togheter, put some vanila in it.
It must be crumbled a little bit. Now do some water in it while you stir. It must be sort of a dough. Put it in rightangelar dish and do this in the freezer for 1 hour. Then you have to cut it in bar with a knife and do them in some foil. You have to keep them cold in the refrisherator or in the freezer.

1. ISS PRO 42. They are a pretty solid all around bar. Lots of protein, lots of calories, low sugar and a pretty good taste.
2. MET-RX bars. They have a good amount of protein and either low sugar or low fat depending on the bar(big 100 or protein plus) and they taste great.

I usually buy the met-rx bars because a grocery store nearby sells them pretty cheap, about $1.50 or less.

Met-RX bars are by far the best bars out there. The Big 100 is a good MRP. Protein plus is almost identical to the Big 100, except it is made with sugar alcohols. And they have that new Carb-Sense that is like a mini Protein Plus.

Bars tend to have a lot of unwelcome ingredients. I like Powerbar Protein Plus because they use natural sugars instead of the possibly dangerous substitues. A word of warning though: they're nearly impossible to chew.

i just got some myoplex carbsense bars variety pack. the initial flavor and outer texture of the bars are very good, but once you start eating it they all tastes the same. its not bad at all, but reminds me of a shake where you didn't mix properly or add enough fluid, kinda grainy.

they aren't clean, but I enjoy the EAS carbadvantage bars when in a pinch. ( 220 cal, 2 g carbs ( sugar alcohol), 20 g protein) I also like Odessey bars, although they pack a ton of calories into a small bar.

I have tried homemade bars. BLECH. I must have a bad recipe. I just assume eat a bowl of dry oats mixed with protein powder..They tasted like cardboard!

If you're looking for a bar with healthy carbs that's not loaded with weird fake chocolate goo and all kinds of sugar additive garbage, try Trioplex whole grain protein bars.....they're made with rolled oats and whey. Can't beat that. And they taste pretty damn good too. Besides, if you're serious about your sport, you'd eat it anyway...even if it tasted like crap.

Taste won't make you grow...calories from healthy carbs & protein will. Think about that next time you pickup a Snickers Marathon bar, or a Clif bar.

If you're talking about Chef Jay's Tri-O-Plex Bars, they are crap man. Definitely not solid nutritionally due to the crazy amount of fructose in them. Then, there's a good amount of fat in them (around 15g if I recall right) and those fats mixed with the amount of high GI carbs would lead to fat gain. Also, I read from a website that the nutrional label isn't even remotely accurate. They had like half the actual amount of protein than the label showed, and an extra 20g sugar.

That's the fact Jack. Add in the fact that they have all that sugar, AND synthetic sweetener, sucralose. Hard as a brick, don't know why they're popular.

i've been eating Labrada cookie bars...they also have rolled oats and 30 g. protein. plus they taste good...so maybe i should be suspicious of those too.

p.s....how do they get away with printing incorrect nutrition facts on the bars? isn't it technically "food" rather than a supp, and therefore regulated by the FOOD & drug administration? (i'm not disagreeing with you..cuz you can't trust 90% of supplement makers these days...i'm just curious)

thanks again

The FDA will not assay a food product to determine whether label nutritional claims are being met. They do monitor companys' labels for compliance to their set parameters (e.g. serving size, % DV, nutrition facts layout, etc.). However, if a third party (possibly a competitor)were to submit an assay of a product that didn't meet protein specs for instance, they may act and order the company to redo their labels. When the "low carb" nutrition bars first came out, they initially claimed 1-3 carbs IN the nutrition facts panel. Companies like Atkins and Keto Foods did not include glycerine, fiber and sugar alcohols in the total carbs on their labels and it took the FDA about 18 months to pick up on this and then companies had a long time to fix their labels. That's when the terms "NET CARBS" and "DIGESTIBLE CARBS" started being used on low carb food packaging.
Basically, you are relying on the company's reputation to not fudge their labels.

They get away with it because

1. The FDA doesnt regulate the market
2. There is a 10% variance allowed on every lable.

As for Chef Jay, his company does not enjoy a good reputation in our industry. Large and trusted companies like Labrada and others test their stuff, and they have too much to lose if their stuff doesnt meet claim, so the big boys always take the care in to make a solid product and have their QC departments test things repeatedly.

I eat the cookie bars and I love them, and they're certainly better than the Chef Jay stuff which is typically dry and bland. Chef Jay's Blueberry Muffin bar tastes like astronaut food - dehyrdated powder.

Stick with a trusted larger company that puts their quality where their mouth is and you'll never go wrong.

Just got some of these and they are decent - I have the oatmeal cookie flavor. Taste like a "not as good" Clif bar, and a bit drier. However, they pack a crapload more protein than a Clif bar does, and at the current special of $10 + shipping for a box of 12, not a bad deal either.
