Wow....The Mick is leading the Say Hey Kid by 66%. Hmmmm.......interesting. I find it really interesting.
I've seen that catch Mays has made tons of times. What was Mantle known for? Was he the first 30-30 guy?
These days, guys make that Mays grab all the time.

Mantle was the bigger icon for sure. But Mays was the better ballplayer.

there is not much debate as to who is the bigger ICON...IMO, mantle wins easily, if only because he played for the Yankees...
who was a better player is a different story

True, but that play was about more than just the catch. He makes the catch and simultaneously whirls around to rifle a throw into the infield to keep the runners from advancing. Also, it was in the World Series...and the stadiums were much bigger. I think the Centerfield wall was some 430 ft. from home.
I think Mantle was probably the bigger icon, but Mays was the best all around ballplayer...EVER!

It is not even close....boy this is really interesting on my little theory.
BTW.....I am a hooyge Willie Mays fan and I was privileged to have seen him play in person. I was sorry that it was during his waning years in baseball, but he is still my favorite baseball player of all time.

What's your theory? I'll refrain from the poll because I'm a Yankee fan. I agree with some people here Willie the better player, but Mantle is the icon because he was a Yankee.

I'm not gonna reveal my theory as of yet but so far the voting hasn't surprised me at all. But I want people to be honest of their voting.

I've always thought of Willie Mays as being at the highest level as a baseball legend, with Ruth, Williams, etc. I've always seen Mantle as being a step below those guys, so my vote is for Mays. Maybe it would be different if Mantle had taken care of himself and played longer.

I voted Willie Mays for the following reasons:
1. He was by far the better player so that is what I base the largest aspect of iconic status on.
2. Media popularity and city arent something the player has a direct effect on. Media creates profiles/icons based on who the like, who is marketable to the masses and happens to be nice to them.
3. Mantle playing in NY for his entire career opposed to Mays for just the first fwe years of his (discounting the mets past his prime period) means there was a ton more newspaper, radio and TV outlets to hype Mantle to the masses. This goes hand in hand with the Yankee organization being the best of the time winning a bunch of championships.
4. I-95 with NY, Boston, Philly and DC arent the center of the universe though sports coverage will have you believing differently sometimes.

its a shame that these guys were way before my time, the best player in my era was barry bonds, and he turned out to be a total fraud

You don't know all the details, plus he was a HOF'er before the whole BS started. He hit 43 HRs, his first year in the Giants back in 93. Yea, back when he looked like a twig. You could make the argument about the all time hr record, season hr record and other all time records he achieved. You could not make the argument that he wasn't HOF worthy before all this BS developed.
For what we know Cal Ripken Jr used them a well. Think about it, he went out there day after day. How do we not know he didn't use something for quick healing? If you are going to blame any one in your era, blame the entire era. It's impossible to distinguished those who were involved.

Through time, Mickey Mantle has been a bigger icon. Playing in the biggest spotlight in the country and the most prestige franchise in American sports all contributed. That doesn't make him the better player of the two.
As to the better ball player, Mays no doubt. Twelve Gold Gloves, 600+ HR in his era, are only the sexy numbers. Most baseball fans have heard of something known as the ""catch"". I sure hope so.

With all due respect to Roger Maris....he was a great player but nowhere near both Mantle and Mays. I happen to own a Lith signed by Willie Mays. I got it from an auction and charged it on my credit card. But happily, they lost the charge slip and I was never charged for the Lith. :D

If you're still living, the best player playing in your era is playing for the Yankees.

The mick had huge potential and was loved by the fans but in many ways he drank away his career and never lived up to his full potential. Yet, he was the face of the yankees. Hank was Mr. consistancy and one of the best ball players to ever live.
Because of his homerun record, Hank has the edge.

???
I think he is.
I think Barry is the best player to have ever lived. 40-40 seasons, 73 HR season, most HR of all times. He has 6 MVP's... and 7 gold gloves.
His numbers are pretty amazing. This is the steroid era... Barry wasn't the only one using. He was the only one using properly ;)

His numbers are insane, least amount of at bat, MOST walks, and still hit the most HR's. That's like having all the odds against him and still walking away with it all. You're right, this is the steroid era and I'm sure many other players are using it as well. But Barry just happen to be in the spotlight which is rather unfortunate, but damn he's one hell of a ball player.
