Hes the play by play guy not sure if he was the one who said it.
But hes the best in the business. Hes been the Canucks broadcaster for over 12 years now but this is his last season because he signed a six year exclusive contract (500k per year  ) with CBC to be their top guy.
Hes going to take over Bob Cole for the leafs games when he retires (aka the most coveted spot in Sports in Canada)...
Im sad to see him go~!

When did he elbow the Wing's Holmstrom's head into the boards from behind too? Was that in the playoffs?? If I recall, he didnt get jack for that.......I could be wrong though. It was a nasty hit too.
I'd like to see my boy Laroque pummel Pronger's gap tooth face with his gigantic left hand.
Laraque is my favourite enforcer of all time, and can even bury the puck; he had a hat-trick a couple years back, and not the Gordie Howe kind:p Great guy off the ice from what I hear too. I'd love to see him absolutely brutalize Pronger...in fact I'd supply the weapon, face-mask AND getaway car :D

73 games...36-32-5....8-2-0 in last 10...77 points...5 points out of 8th (Canucks)...7 points out of 6 or 7th (Flames and Avs)...11 games left

They have just as much a chance as anyone else...
however, less penalties tend to be called in the playoffs and that could seriously hurt MTL's offensive output.
1. New Jersey
2. Pittsburgh
3. Montreal
those are the top 3 in the East in my opinion... but I also think the Rangers could make some noise.

In the National Hockey League there are two sets of standards: one for the star players and one for everyone else.
At least that is the opinion of Minnesota forward Chris Simon after Anaheim defencemen Chris Pronger was given an eight-game suspension for stomping on the leg of Vancouver forward Ryan Kessler.......

He's exactly what we've needed for years now; a physical, shutdown d-man. That's why I was hoping Sundin would waive his no-trade, so we could deal with ANA for EDM's 1st and get maybe Stamkos AND Schenn. That would be nuts!
Speaking of Mats, the Sun reported that along with the Kaberle to Philly for Carter and a 1st, Fletch had a deal in place with the habs to send Sundin to them for Higgins and their 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks in this year's draft. Those two deals, plus drafting one of the young d-men with our own first to eventually replace Kabs would have us loaded for the future. Damn JFJ and his handing out NTC's like candy!

More than likely BS. The Sun is the only place reporting that. And Gainey apparently refused to include Higgins in the deal for Hossa, there's no way he'd give him up for Sundin.

The source of the story is Steve Simmons, TSN is just reporting from his story (and I think he's on their show, The Reporters as well). He has a track record for bs trades.
Plus Gainey still wouldn't trade his 1st, 2nd, and 3rd PLUS Higgins for a what, 37 year old Sundin? Gainey's all about the draft and emphasizing young players.

From the article:
The agreed-to trade would have sent speedy winger Christopher Higgins to the Leafs, along with Montreal's first-, second- and third-round draft picks going to Toronto in exchange for the captain.

Not true. AM 640 in Toronto was the first to break the story back on deadline day when they were talking to Cliff Fletcher. Obviously Fletch wouldn't go into specifics, but he did confirm Montreal was one of 9 teams he had spoken to about Sundin. Simmons was probably bored/hadn't filled his Leaf bashing quotient for the week and decided to bring it up again. Doesn't make it 100% true, but I wouldn't shrug it off so easily.
And for those that are saying Sundin wouldn't be worth that much, consider what a gimpy Forsberg got last year: 1st, 3rd rounders, young top-6 forward and one of Nashville's best prospects. Plus, Sundin is better than Hossa right now, which is what acquiring rental players is all about, getting the best player as of now; Hossa was going to test the market. Plus, Sundin doesn't have a history of choking in the playoffs, and is one of the most clutch players in the league. He's tied for the most overtime winners in league history.

I'm just glad that didn't hold up as the winner. Toskala's played SO well this season, he really doesn't deserve that. We'd probably be in last overall if it weren't for him and Mats. Anyone see the Sportscentre top-10 they did on long goals? Some pretty bad ones there. I think the one on Thomas was the worst, didn't even seem to have a bad bounce or anything, he just kind of meekly swept at it. But nothing beats Salo in the olympics against Belarus though :D.

Don't know if that is so much bad goaltending as it was bad luck. Just took a crazy hop right before it got too him. Granted, Toskala probably should have tried to originally put his whole body in front of it instead of just trying to grab it.
Big win for the Oilers last night plus a huge loss for the Flames. Only 5 points back of the Canucks, Flames and Wild for a playoff spot. If they keep it up they could make things interesting. Here's hoping one of the three(*cough*Calgary*cough*) falter down the stretch giving us a chance to squeak in.

Detroit's regular season wins/points have been inflated the last decade due to the ****ty division they're in. That's why when they get to the playoffs, they havent gotten it done.
Their division rivals have made the playoffs a total of 8 times in the last 8 years.

they are still a really good team when they are healthy. They consitantly finish at the top of the league even before the stupid schedual of playing each divisional team 8 times a season. I hate the wings but it would be stupid of me to say that they are not good.

What a game. Glad the Oil won with there backs against the wall again. Fridays game against the Canucks should be a great game.

God to see it, I was hoping they'd go on a run, just so the integrity of the 3rd seed can't be questioned.
Likely playoff preview last night with Dallas and Anaheim. Barch and May scrapped for the 4th time this year! This one was a draw, anyone know what happened in the first three?
Pretty nasty seeing Foster on the Wild break his leg last night. Just go to the automatic icing already. Lots of other leagues already do, and the 1 time out of 100 an icing is negated is not worth the injury risk. Just ask Pat Peake.

Barch and May have each won one and the other 2 have been draws. That was a great fight. all of their fights have been good ones. Dallas was playing like crap last night. Their power play was garbage. The officiating was garbage too for both sides.
and yes the icing rule needs to be automatic icing.

Ok call me a homer but I think if Washington doesn't make the playoffs Iginla should get MVP. He got robbed in 01-02 and the argument was Calgary didn't make the playoffs. The same logic should apply to Ovechkin. Malkin deserves some consideration too, but I don't think his game is nearly as complete as Iginla's.

I'm skeptical when they try to give the hart to a goal scorer that's on a decent team. Hell look at Crosby getting it last year. Doesn't look like the team is hurting too badly without him this year.

You might change your tune in the playoffs, Richards has always been clutch. Tampa and Dallas play very different systems, and he's also had to do it all himself this year with the plugs he was put with in Tampa, so it takes some time to change mindsets.
I've heard rumblings that Tippett is gone if they don't win a round this year though.
And dammit, I know I joke about the Leafs tanking, but I'd rather them play with integrity, even if it means sabotaging their draft position. But you know it's a sign of a bad team when they are filled with veterans and still can't win until almost nothing is on the line. Kabs, Stajan, Toskala, Antropov  and Sundin are the only ones who have showed up this year out of our top players.
Ah well, there's always next year to be ****ty and get a shot at Tavares or Hedman, the Swedish Pronger without the cheap-ass play. :D

Huge win over the weekend for the Oilers over the Avs to get within 3 points of 8th. Remaining schedule is going to be a tough one, all divisional games.
Tonight - vs Minnesota
Wed Mar 26 - @ Minnesota
Fri Mar 28 - @ Colorada
Sat Mar 29 - @ Calgary
Tues April 1 - vs Calgary
Thurs April 3 - @ Vancouver
The thing that sucks is that the last day of the regular season isn't until April 6 and there's two games between the April 3rd and the 6th that, depending on how the Oilers do, could decide for them whether or not they make it. April 5th, Calgary @ Vancouver (not too worried about this one as I don't think it'll have much affect) and then the one I'm the most concerned about is on April 6, Minnesota @ Colorado. Depending on how the Avs play, this one could decide whether they or the Oilers get the last spot.

x2 on t4m's post. And it is totally irrelevant whether the Caps make the playoffs or not. If you were starting a team and could take one player based on THIS year's results, you'd be lying if you wouldn't say Ovechkin. That makes him most valuable. You can't expect him to carry that team to the playoffs, he's not Jesus on ice; it's a wonder they're even in contention, and that's all the more reason to pick him. Dude just flat-out bags goals. Now if only Calgary had actually won their game over Colorado. Last time I count on them for anything.

I'd actually like it if the Oilers make the playoffs (Calgary/Edmonton would be an amazing series to watch if it happened). Almost all of Nashville's games left are against St Louis, Columbus, and Chicago. Whereas all of Edmonton's games left are in the Northwest. Not to mention they'd still need Colorado's slide to continue as well.

In the grand scheme though, as long as Edmonton can stay on a roll in their last 5 games, I'll be more than happy to let the other 4 beat eachother around and swap wins. Will give the Oilers a better chance at making it in.

my caps get screwed again...the canes got a free point thanks to the boys in Toronto.
CLIFFS: Carolina probably scored a valid goal, but the replay did not show the puck cross the line, it was only assumed it crossed the line as a result of where Huet was in the net. The refs made no signal. Therefore, by rule as happens all the time, it's an automatic no gaol. They decide to make up their own rules and count the goal.

Crosby and Dupuis are returning to the lineup on thursday(dupuis' wife had a baby down in atlanta, he was gone for 2 games)...can't friggin wait to see Crosby and Hossa together. Hossa has been amazing thus far, but has mostly assists because he doesn't have anybody to feed him the puck like Crosby will.

SI did a players poll for who would win the cup this year. Results were:
Detroit: 62%
Anaheim: 20%
Ottawa: 8%
San Jose: 3%
Montreal: 2%
Players could not vote for their own team, and Calgary was the only other to get more than 1% of the vote (1.1%).
Interesting. My preseason and current pick, Anaheim, is up there.

He'll be a scratch in the playoffs I think. He's 36 I believe, plays a grinding style, and hasn't exactly taken care of himself off the ice over the years. How much can he have left?

They're probably not on there because of their lack of playoff success in recent years. Remember, it was a poll of the players, so I guess they feel Dallas doesn't have what it takes to win when it counts.

This is exactly it. Even though they had a decent run last year (or was it the year before), the players remember that Turco is the goaltender and he doesn't exactly have the best playoff record.

Well the Oilers playoff hopes took a hit last night with the loss to the Wild. Retribution for the beatdown the Oilers put on them Monday. The only good thing that came out of it was that the Wild win knocked the Flames out of first in the NW.
To really have any chance now, I think the Oilers are going to need to win at least 3 of their last 4. If they can beat the Avs tomorrow, then get at least a split against the Flames and that means they'd have to win their last game against the Canucks. A tall order but I don't think it's impossible. Just have to wait and see. Can't give up hope until they're officially eliminated.

Definitely. Besides Morrow and Zubov, and Richards, wh's still trying to fit in, I can't think of anyone that's had a real good playoff in a while. Modano hasn't been good in the post-season since 02-03. He's just not a difference-maker anymore.

I will have to agree with you. Morrow and Zubov have always been work horses and have always came through when needed. Modano doesn't do to much any more. I just hope it is different this year. IF Turco plays like he did in the playoffs last year and the team gets back to where they were about 1-2 months ago then this will be a fun playoff year. Boucher might return tonight and Zubov should too on this road trip. Hopefully Richy finally finds his fit on this road trip.

I had a thought last night where i think best, lol, and I can truly invession the Oilers playing the Canucks on APril whatever it is and the winner of that game gets 8th. If the Oil are in this position come the last game, they will beat the Canucks.
As for last nights game, well it was not very good was it. I bought the PPV and for the first period the Oil seemed sluggish. They picked it up for the 2nd and 3rd. Roli did play good as the goals really wernt his fault. Mind you if Garon was healthy and had started we probably wouldve won. Minny didnt out play us, they just scored and the Oil didnt. We hit about 6 goal posts; Even Pisani's goal rattled off the goal post. Anyways up next is the Avs.

As much as it pains me to agree with a Nucks fan in the confines of a hockey thread, I agree. I have no problem with the shootout in the regular season as ties are lame and unlimited overtime in the regular season is completely infeasible. But they should make regulation wins worth 3 points. Then we'd truly see who the best teams are reflected in the standings.

I think they should just get rid of the shoot out. have like 5on 5 ot, then 4-4 then 3 on 3. all 5 min periods. one winner one loser. 2 point games.

This I agree with. Right now, I think you see more often than not in tie games, teams will coast a little and aren't as aggresive because they don't want to lose out on that guaranteed point in OT. If they made a regulation win 3 points, teams might play harder so they don't sacrifice 2 points if they lose in OT or the SO.
As good as we are in the shootout i too feel that OT's are worthless. Get rid of the shootout and have a tie as a tie, and 1 pt each team. And cry all you want but this is the way of the NHL and once we beat out the Canucks you can cry some more.

You obviously dont know Luongo. Hes the most competitve spirited hockey player I've seen, he'll be back and wont miss a game.
But any joy around the Vancouver Canucks about Luongo becoming a father - and not missing a start, as he's expected to play Friday night in Minnesota - was overshadowed by confirmation that veteran centre Brendan Morrison is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, as reported in today's Vancouver Sun.

1-0 pens, malkin with a goal(assisted by my boy ruutu). You should have seen the hit laraque had on this ref after a no call. He nailed an islander but the ref happened to be there too and the crowd went nuts.

Your canucks lucked out. I just read on nhl.com that he doesn't expect to miss anytime. I was hoping he would miss the game vs my oilers.

Yeah, he and hossa are looking pretty good together so far. No points yet, though. Islanders scored a goal(1-1), they always give us trouble.

Im waiting to see how the whole team performs in the playoffs. Not sure if i would consider them a cup contender but i would like to see them do well.

I don't consider the Pens a serious contender. People seem to have forgotten Hossa's previous performances.

Hossa's not the only person on the team bro. Regardless, the pens beat the Islanders 3-1 and move to the top of the east again(lol). Ruutu with a 3 point night...Hossa hurt again(go figure).

It looks now like it is a two horses race for 1st place in the east. I don't care where the habs finish, I just want them to play the Boston Bruins in the 1st round.

The oilers need to beat the Avs tonight. But with out luck it won't even matter. Vancouver will probally beat minnisota so we won't gain any ground.

Roberto Luongo and his wife have had their baby and the all-star netminder is back with the Canucks.
Roberto Luongo and his wife have had their baby and the all-star netminder is back with the Canucks.
He will be in net against the Minnesota Wild on Friday night in an important game with playoff implications for both clubs.
The baby girl, named Gabriela, was delivered last night and weighed 7 lbs, 6 oz.
The Canucks are sitting in the Western Conference's 8th and final playoff spot with 86 points. They are two points back of the seventh place Colorado Avalanche. The ninth-place Nashville Predators are just two points behind the Canucks, while the Edmonton Oilers are three back.

Luongo was taking so much heat on tsn comments for leaving to be at the birth of his child. People were accusing him of quitting on the team and not being passionate about hockey! One guy even said he'd take rolison over luongo anyday because he's a competitor.....

I got no problem with Louie going to the birth of his child! My only problem is his lack of math skills when he impregnated his wife! :)

People are idiots. I'm sorry the birth of his child is more important than any hockey game. He got many more games he'll play in, but the birth of your child only happens once. I don't blame him at all for leaving. If I were him I'd make the same decision.

I agree. Nothing is more inportant than a childs birth. Here's to hoping Luongo is gone until April 7th

that is kinda a crazy statement with the like of Malkin and Crosby, as well as all the other fire power the Pens have along with solid goaltending. I will be suprised if they win the cup, but i bet there will be some damage done to other teams !!!!!!

Any of the top 5 teams in the west would take the pens in a 7 game playoff series.

Pens beat the Ducks, Wild, Stars, Canucks, and the flames. Not saying that has any implications for playoff games, but we're a force. Saying any of the top 5 teams in the west would beat us as a fact is pretty dumb.

the west is a way tougher conference though. the teams in the west grind out wins and wear eachother down. plus they travel a lot more.

Ducks, Wild, Stars, and Flames are all more suited to playoff style hockey than the pens.
