ok, northwest is better why? becuase both the northwest and atlantic have 4 teams in the playoffs as of today.. atlantic has a 2 5 7 8 seed and northwest has the 3 6 7 8 seeds, the northwest is closer with the points in all but that doesnt make it better

In my opinion the West is tougher than the East (not even talking about the time zone differences and all the travel) and you can argue that the top 3 teams in the NHL are all in the West..

The West has most of the elite goaltenders (Turco, Luongo, Nabby, Kipper, Giggy...) and defense men (Pronger, Nieds, Lidstrom, Zubov, Phaneuf, etc) so almost every game is a lot tighter than the East.....

Alantic Divison's schedule is way easier than the Schedule of the North West.

You have NJ/MTL/OTT in the east and ANA/DET/DAL in the west. I think that the west will win the cup this year and will destroy any team that emerge from the east...

I wouldnt mind of the Nucks end up playing them!!!

We need to avenge that series few years back where we were the 8th seed and were up 2-0 in the series coming back to Vancity.

Dammit Leafs, why do you always make an ultimately futile late-season run and ruin your draft position? Sundin in on fire though.

Just got home from the Panthers/Isles game, and the Isles lost :( .
Craig Anderson was on fire tonight, the Isles fired 53 shots, and he stopped every single one. Now we're even further back :( .

Good game last night. Best part was the fact that the win put us over .500 for the season. It's really too bad that they are as far out as they are. Right now it's 7 points but that's a lot of ground to make up with the amount of games left.

OT: t4m i saw your thread about dell laptops but didn't have time to reply. I have an upgraded (better HD, screen, battery, bluetooth etc) dell 1420 that I got for $1100 (including tax) and couldn't be happier. I recommended it and my roommate picked one up too. He's loving it as well. The nice thing about dell is you can return the laptop within 30 days. I got a 15'' laptop at first but found it was bigger than expected, so I returned it and got the 14.1''. I did a lot of searching (couple months, yes srly) and couldn't find anything comparable that wasn't $300 more.

The only way I see an East team winning is if Marc-Andre Fleury matures and breaks out (he has the talent to be Luongo-like, he was a 1st overall pick and goalies develop late), and the offense takes over from there for Pitt. That is unlikely though. Maybe the teams in the west beat each other up so bad that they don't have much left for the final, but I doubt that too. I'm sticking with my pre-season selection of Anaheim to repeat.

Canucks fans, here's an excerpt from a TSN article about the Richards trade, do you agree?

For Vancouver fans, losing out on Brad Richards seems particularly devastating. This was a fan base and a dressing room that needed a dose of energy. With Roberto Luongo under contract for two more seasons after this one, the time for Vancouver to try to win is now. Their fans deserve this. They have been loyal and they have been patient. They show up every night and pack GM Place and they even put up with the worst uniform re-design since Tim Hortons went to those all-brown numbers. But GM Dave Nonis simply did not deliver. It's true that Brett Hull and the Dallas Stars had a better goaltending prospect to offer in Mike Smith, but was Ryan Kesler really deemed untradeable by the Canucks brass? I think Ryan Kesler is a really good, young two-way player, but he isn't likely to deliver 5-point nights like Richards did in his Stars' debut against the Blackhawks last week. Ask Chicago Bulls fans if they think it was a good idea for their GM John Paxson (likely soon to be fired) to turn down a deal to acquire Kobe Bryant early in the season because he didn't want to part with Luol Deng.

I'm not saying Luongo won't re-sign with the Canucks when he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2010, but there's one thing I have learned over the years: When your wife decides she wants to have her baby about 4,500 kilometres away from the city a player is currently playing hockey in, she's probably not going to be pushing for her husband to re-sign there.

And sorry Oil fans, but this is damn funny, sad and true at the same time:

As for Edmonton, in the words of one Oiler fan in the SportsCentre newsroom on Monday night, the goal is simple: We're not making the playoffs, but the more we win, the worse our first round pick becomes" (the one Edmonton will have to surrender to Anaheim for signing Dustin Penner). Hey, it's something to cheer for! They're certainly not cheering for Penner, at least not the way he played Sunday night against Columbus when he looked like the most disinterested player on the ice.

I wish we got a top 6 forward but there was no one we could get.

We didnt have the package to get Richards since Tampa needed a goalie that could play yesturday not 3 years down the road.

Florida was asking for the Sedins in exchange for Ollie.

We would have had to give up Kesler and Edler to get Hossa.

Sucks.

That about sums it up. The better we do, the worse the pick Anaheim gets. It's the best possible outlook on the entire scenario.

As with most of the players the Oilers have signed over the last few years, I can see Penner trying to get out as soon as he can. He's played about as well as I expected but for the money Lowe gave him, we needed him to play even better.

Has there been much talk out there about non-roster changes? Lowe was so highly regarded a while back, but the last while has been disastrous for him. Or maybe MacT has run his course and they need a change? Just seems like the team isn't playing up to the sum of its parts. If it was Toronto or Montreal, fair or foul, the fans and media would be screaming for someone's head.

We needed scoring at the beginning of the 06/07 season, we needed scoring last off season, we needed scoring all this season. Nothing has changed except a few 3rd/4th line plugs getting shifted around and hoping they pot some goals. Fuk I just wish we had the same team as in 03 minus Cloutier plus Luongo. I'm getting sick of watching the nucks win/lose 2-1,1-0 games and being suck an easy team to play against. Honestly in the last handful of games I think the canucks have only had 3 or 4 decent body checks. I've been watching some old games when Crow was coach, and god damnit are those games exciting. Canuck fans bitched and moaned about Minnesota playing boring hockey but are looking through their rose coloured glasses and can't see or make excuses for how this team is playing.

Pretty much sums it up...

I am so tired of watching BORING HOCKEY.

No hitting (good thing we traded Cook, the only guy who actually went out to hit every game (his turlting is another story))

No exciting plays...

No end to end.....

I would watch soccer if I wanted to watch low scoring games with no body contact and the occasional goal.

Though I love the Canucks, win or loose, I am going to start watching teams who actually try to beat their opponents by scoring more goals.

I haven't heard much but that could be more because I'm in Calgary than anything. I still hear some rumblings from other fans about MacT and Lowe but I sometimes think maybe they get a bit of a free pass because of who they are and what they were a part of with the Oilers. Personally, I think it might be good to get some new faces in there. People were calling for MacT's head a couple years ago and then they went on their miracle run which gave him a couple years grace and after the Smyth trade last year and not doing anything this year at the deadline, buying or selling, I think Lowe's time is up. Maybe with new ownership this will happen.

well unfortunately MacT isnt going anywhere. He has 31 wins with a depleted roster. 2 yrs ago he lead us to game 7 of the Stanley Cup.

KLowe also isnt going anywhere as he has a good rapor with both Daryl Katz and the former owners. As much as I want him gone it isnt gonna happen anytime soon.

In Vancouver a back row upper bowl ticket is around $100..

I am thinking that I should sign up for the season tickets waiting list right now since the list so long that by the time my name comes up, I'll have a steady career and be done college.

The Vancouver Canucks received some bad news Thursday as they learned defenceman Mattias Ohlund has bone chips in his left knee. In an attempt to reduce the swelling in the joint, Ohlund has been administered anti-inflammatory drugs. He will then be given four to six days to see if the swelling has gone down enough to return to play.

The future of the Nucks blueline is in good hands, Edler/Bieksa/Bourdon... :)

It was a bit of a weird one...Juice rocked him with a hard right right off the bat and De Vries head snapped back, but then he followed up with a left that knocked Bieksa down...I thought he was in trouble, but he got right back up, threw De Vries down and started hammering him but the linesman jumped in pretty quick.

And you're right, Bieksa (and Rypein) are probably 2 of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the league. I'd probably put Rypien close to the top of that category.

The hit on Miller was charging, boarding and unnecessary with the game winding down. The cheap shot was the cross check to Bourdon's face and then dropping the gloves.

Oh i wish the canucks played Nashville again this season. I will temporarily be cheering for the flamers tonight :)

"Hitting is part of the game. It's a clean hit, shoulder-on-shoulder. (Miller) is the one that bailed out and when you bail out, that's when you get injured.

"You've got to be a man to play this game and you've got to be able to keep your head up," Tootoo told the Canadian Press. "Clean hit. Nothing more to say."

Fights are up 20% this year. How can he answer the bell when he's jumped from behind? He didn't even have a chance to defend himself. Knowing Pronger, and watching Eager play junior, Pronger most definitely did something to justify Eager going after him, Ben plays hard but not dirty.

Don Cherry just made a good point saying that the Blues and Oilers have never been the same since Pronger left, and its no coincidence that the Ducks won the Cup with him in the line up.

But then he went on and called Pronger the most valuable player to his team in the NHL and without a doubt the best d-man in the league.

No doubt he's one of the best at pure defence, but the list is for ALL-AROUND D-men. Just because he's one of the best shutdown guys doesn't mean you can forgive his offensive shortcomings. Kaberle and Rafalski prevent goals as well with their skating, positioning, passing and puckhandling. Playing defence isn't solely about blocking shots and making hits.

Kaberle and Rafalski prevent goals as well with their skating, positioning, passing and puckhandling. Playing defence isn't solely about blocking shots and making hits.

Can't argue with you on that one, but I was more talking about the best d-mens period. Mike is not an all around defencemen of course, he is an awesome stay at home defencemen and is one of the reasons why montreal has been the upset team so far this year in the nhl.

I think that he is overrated, he was average at best at Dallas. Now he has Luongo...speaks for itself. He is a good defensive d-men, but not top 15-20 imo.

Greg1983
03-10-2008, 10:33 AM
Still the #1 job for a d-men is to stop the offence. Imo Komisarek is a top 5 in the NHL to do that, that makes him top 10 all around. Defensive defencemens like Komisarek and Regehr are so overlooked, like a shut down cornerback int he nfl that doesn't do many interceptions.

x2

Regehr is a beast and at this point in their careers, if I could only have one for this season, I'd take him over even Phaneuf (obviously Phaneuf is younger and will surpass him at some point). It doesn't bother me one bit that he doesn't have an offensive bone in his body.

Oil take on the Blues tonight in the drugstore. Oil are at 71 pts while 8th was at 78 as of yesterday. 80 pts is 1st. (all the stats are off the top of my head so I might be wrong). There is a slim and nil chance of the Oil making the playoffs. As long as we keep winning and a few teams lose anything is possible.

Hopefully after having their butts handed to them last night in Calgary, the Blues don't come out and dominate the game. They've lost to both Vancouver and Calgary and I'm sure they don't want to get swept in their Western swing. The Oilers should win this game if they play well and don't become undisciplined.

As far as the playoffs go, it'd be a minor miracle if the Oilers somehow managed to creap in but weirder things have happened.

Then have the best offense in the nhl interm of goals scored, one of the top defence. The question mark is the goaltending but if Price becomes what he is supposed to be...i smell a very good team in Montreal for a long time.

Perhaps there's life for the Sens after all. ;)

OTTAWA - Dany Heatley found the solution to his ailing offensive game - keep things simple.

Heatley scored three times and set up another as the Senators beat the Boston Bruins 4-1 Tuesday night.

After scoring just three goals in 13 games, Heatley now has four goals in the Senators' past two wins. His hat trick goal was into an empty net.

''When you get into a slump, sometimes offensively you try and do too much and not shoot the puck.
I think we've all been guilty of that and the last two nights we've just tried to make the game simpler,'' Heatley said.

3 OT wins in a row for the Oilers, 3 OT game winning goals for Cogliano. The kids are playing well. They're 7-3 in their last ten. Too bad this bit of a hot streak has come so late in the season. There's still a very slim chance for them to make the playoffs (7 points out right now with 12 to play) but either Colorado(6), Minnesota(7) or Vancouver(8) would have to really tank the last dozen games.

Agreed. That's why I love Sprotsnet because they have the different stations devoted to different areas of the country so here in Calgary, I actually get Oilers coverage and don't have to worry about Toronto sports propaganda. On TSN, you'd think Toronto was the only city with a sports team.

As if we needed another example of Pronger's lack of class. What a douche. Repeat offender is strictly multiple suspensions, which he fits the criteria for, and even if he wasn't, a repeat offender gets 25 and he gets nothing? It's a suspendable act, that has been established through precedent. Is it a coincidence that Brian Burke used to work in the NHL head office, or that Pronger is a star player on the defending cup champs who are fighting for playoff seeding? Sounds fishy to me...

The footage I saw earlier today was from quite a ways out and you couldn't see much. But I saw better footage and Pronger does have his legs tangled with Kesler's but when his leg comes free he "accidently on purpose" stomps on Kesler's calf. Should have gotten something. Anything.

Happy Gilmore is quite possibly my fave movie of all-time; "The price is wrong, b*tch!"

Seriously, officials from the ice on up have made some BAD errors in judgement this year.
love Happy Gilmore

yes the officiating has been absolutly terrible this season.

The Wings secured a playoff berth win the win over the Stars last night

how the hell did the stars lose? they had a 3-1 lead. i was pissed that they lost.

The Wings poured on the coals in the 3rd. They had 2 quick goals in the first couple of minutes

I don't think Pronger should have been suspended (serious)

Kypreos was right... Kesler is trying to get Pronger into a sharpshooter or something.

Pronger should at least be suspened 15 games. Simon got 30 i think for the same thing. Simons was a bit more malisious but the intent is still there for pronger. so kesler tried to trip him, is that a good enough reason to stomp on his calf which could put him out for the season possibly longer?

Awsome. Now i see there was intent. Good video. He should have got a big suspension for that.

Of course he should have been suspended. I bet I know why he wasnt suspended. Because Burke and Colin Campbell are best buds. Just look at Prongers facial expression when he did it. It was intentional alright. I watched the brutal game ( it was a Pay Per View game and I got ripped off what a crappy game )

Canucks are the streakiest team in the league. Had a 4 game winning streak followed by a 3 game losing streak followed by a 3 game winning streak and now another 2 game losing streak. Luongo is awesome but he doesnt look like he cares as much as he did last year. Guys like Naslund ( 6 million dollars ) need to play like what they are getting paid to do. Naslund and Morrison need to be gone next year that frees up 10 million right there.

GO OTTAWA!!! No matter who wins the Pens still have a lot of competition for first, but atleast if Ottawa wins it will be a 3 way tie instead of the Habs 2 up. Just don't let it go to OT lol...
HOW BOUT THEM SENS?!?!?!

Yeah, I just forgot about New Jersey lol...bastards won in OT. If they would have lost in OT it would be a 4 way tie. Good stuff.

What usually wins in the playoffs? Goaltending. Pens have none and the Sens have none. Gerber is average and Emery is a head case. Who starts for the Pens Fleury who is just back from IR? Now the Devils have arguably the best goaltender in the league and great team chemistry ( I am also not biased since I am a Canucks fan just a realist )

Reps duder.. i want to see Brodeur get at least one more cup before he gets too old. As much as i love the Isles, i like the Devils and even the Rangers ( to a point) which is rare in a tri state hockey fan... But given the amount of time Brodeur has been active and how good he still is, i think he needs one more cup before he goes :) .

Damn it's gonna be tough coming out of the west this year. Detroit, San Jose, Anaheim, Dallas all looking REALLY tough.

well Anaheim might be out of it depending on how longer pronger is suspended for. i'm hoping 20 games. Dallas needs to pick it up again, they are slumping. Hopfully San Jose cools off going into the playoffs. Detroit is starting to step it up now too.

the NHL needs to wake up and realize that Pronger is no less of a dirt player than Simon.........I bet he only gets 5-10 games but should be 3x that much. What a douche.

Hawks are pretty much mathmatically elimanated from reaching the playoffs...This doesn't bother me as bad as it usually does, because I have now seen first hand, just how bright our future looks! Also, Im hoping we get Kyle Beach in the draft this year

exactly. pronger is in th exact same situation as simon. both had 7 suspensions before they stepped on another player. they both meant to injure.

The Pens have a potential to have good goaltending, I'm just not sure how it will work out. As of now Ty Conklin is still #1 in the league in save percentage and only had one bad game. Fleury also has been playing pretty well since he's come back. We'll have to wait and see.

F*ckin Pronger. Let's review: headshot in last year's playoffs to McAmmond: 1 game. Downie gets 25 for a headshot to McAmmond. 8 games for stomping an opposing player; Chris Simon gets 25. Good for Anaheim Burke is butt-buddies with Campbell and Bettman

When did he elbow the Wing's Holmstrom's head into the boards from behind too? Was that in the playoffs?? If I recall, he didnt get jack for that.......I could be wrong though. It was a nasty hit too.

I'd like to see my boy Laroque pummel Pronger's gap tooth face with his gigantic left hand.

Ya the Holmstrom head shot was in last year's playoffs. He got 1 game for that incident.

heh look at the comments on the tsn article. People (not just canuck fans like others were crying earlier) are upset with the way the NHL handled it.

Holmqvist sucks

Yup and thank god he does as the Canucks have a 3-1 lead. Naslund FINALLY scored. I think its been like 11 games since either him or the Sedins have scored a goal. Canucks were dominating early on in the period but Dallas finally got some puck at Luongo and got one past him right at the end of the period.
