Smith will miss a minimum of 2 weeks. It could be longer. They really don't know yet how long his recovery will be, and won't know until he begins rehab.

Cowboys shut the lights off. Both the stadium and the offense. That last TD by Jones, no coming back from that.

Gilbride, in maintaining his status as the worst OC in the league, keeps running screen plays and runs, with both the Cowboys CB's on the bench.

The Giants beat themselves in this game. Shot themselves in the foot every chance they got, and didn't take advantage of the opportunities they had.

Eli throwing that pick 6 was a killer. Likely a 14 point swing.

I'd say losing Steve Smith had a pretty big impact as well. He keeps drives going with his big 3rd down catches, and would have come in handy on those last few drives where the Giants were stopped.

How frustrating is it that despite the horrible play, they still had a chance to pull it off late in the game? The two TD's called back on penalties are bad enough, but even with them if that 14 point swing on the pick six when Nicks let up on the route doesn't happen, they still could've won by one.

Craziness. Such is life as a Giants fan.

I hope they don't lay down for Philly next week.

bodybuilder127
11-15-2010, 02:34 PM
While last night's game was one of the more frustrating games in a while(missed opportunities galore), I'm still not that worried about next week. Take away the penalties and you get a 14-21 point swing. Take away the few big plays and they wouldn't have gotten far..... just a bad game/underestimating the Cowboys IMO.

Giants receiver Ramses Barden likely to miss season

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 15, 2010, 2:57 PM EST

When it rains injuries, it often pours.

The Giants are the latest team to suffer setbacks in bunches, with receiver Ramses Barden the latest victim. Tom Coughlin said at his press conference on Monday that Barden was “unlikely” play again this year after fracturing his ankle and suffering “a significant ligament injury.”

Barden is a second year receiver the Giants were counting on to replace Steve Smith, who missed Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys because of a pectoral injury. Smith is expected to miss this week’s game against the Eagles as well.

The decision to place preseason sensation Victor Cruz on injured reserve — which Cruz thought was premature — may come back to haunt the G-Men.

Interesting to see how we game plan for Vick. We have always traditionally done pretty well in stopping him under Coughlin, although he is a better passer now than he ever was. I wonder if we will use our 3 safeties with 1 spying him.

Redskins defense is 26th in points allowed, 32nd in yards allowed, 31st in pass yards allowed, and 25th in rush yards allowed.

The biggest thing hurting the Giants is the loss of Steve Smith. The thing that killed them the most against the Cowboys was that the team couldn't convert on 3rd down when they really needed it, and Steve Smith is what makes this offense go.

The defense was caught off guard, and the Cowboys did a great job of setting them up. It was a chess match, and they definitely were much better prepared then the Giants. Tuck said they would show them one look then run a certain play, then show them the same look later, and run a completely different play.

We're in a bad way. Barden, done for the season. Smith, out until at least December. That means Nicks, Manningham and Calhoun are the only WR on the roster. Giants just signed Derek Hagan (which will help on ST) but, that's not going to be enough to compete the next few weeks. Boss is hurting. O-line is banging up.

I'm not getting a warm and fuzzy right now.

The O line is holding up pretty well in pass protection, it's the run game that seems to be suffering a little. It could also be that Bradshaw is starting to wear down a little. He doesn't seem to have the burst he did in the beginning of the season. He's a small back carrying the majority of the work load for the first time in his NFL career. It might be a good idea to get Jacobs, and Danny Ware involved a little more in the run game.

Jacobs is averaging 5.2 yards per carry this season, and is tied in 4th place with carries over 20 yards. He's actually playing well this season, and I think as it gets colder, and teams are worn out late in the season, he will help the team out a lot. A fresh Brandon Jacobs that late in the season will be trouble for opposing defenses.

I agree with that play being called too. But I put that on Gilbride. A QB sneak would have been a much better option on that down. A play action pass probably would have been a better option then giving it to Jacobs when the other team knows it's coming, and half your O line starters are absent from the game.

We will definitely find out this week. Vicks confidence is at an all time high after this weeks game, and he will no doubt try to air it out against the Giants defense who were unable to defend against Dallas's deep passes for most of the game. All teams are going to do it unless the Giants show they can stop it.

The team needs to learn what to do to stop teams when they max protect the QB, and use 2 and 3 step drops. You have to jam the WRs really well at the line, and obviously they didn't do a good job in Dallas. Kitna was hardly touched.

It's a joke how much deep balls were caught last game, it hasn't happened all season, maybe once per every other game. It looks like there was no help over the top and their WRs were running free in zone coverage.

It's like the Giants always figure out a way to make sh!t harder for themselves.

The defense is playing very well. The offense, not so much. Partly due to poor play calling putting the team in 3rd, and long situations.

The Giants have only rushed the ball to the right side all game long. The eagles know the Giants O line is decimated on the left side so are paying less attention to that side. It's going to be near impossible to run against the Eagles under those circumstances.

Eli needs to pass to open the run in this one. Dink, and dunk them to death until they loosen up on run D.

But the D did hold them to field goals.. but then again did crumble on 3rd downs and on huge plays (like 4th n TD)

Like bubba said I think its huuuuge mistakes at crucial times.. we got lucky at times when the eagles collapsed, but cant depend on that cuz other teams wont

Offense started to look decent in 2nd half, but then just bad execution, like the dumb dump to bradshaw n his fumble (but got reversed luckily)

Big mistakes at crucial times. Failing in the 4th qtr has become a signature of this team over the last 2 years, particularly in the 2nd half of the season. Probably the worst team when it comes to ball security that I've seen the Giants field in the Coughlin era. This team needs to see some kind of special week long training on how to carry the football. If we miss the playoffs, which it looks like we very well might with all these teams at 7-3+, I think we'll see a new coaching staff next year. You simply cannot keep fielding a team that cannot hold on to the ball and chokes in the clutch like this. We have started off 5-3 or better under Coughlin every year and have only had a positive record in the 2nd half like once.

Jags are definitely winable, their run D isnt great so we need to reestablish that and get our shyt together

The D held the Eagles to 3 of 14 on 3rd downs.

man, i'm getting sick of gilbride's play calling. especially in the first half we got SO predictable and didn't take advantage when we had opportunities. granted the philly defense did a pretty solid job containing our receivers, but we have to get a little more creative and stay away from the run, run, pass, kick pattern.

I don't know whether to take solace in the fact that the past two losses were winnable games despite not having Steve Smith and half of our O-line, or to be that more frustrated because they were that close to winning the last two games despite all the injuries and shot themselves in the foot with stupid, stupid mistakes.

It just seems that under Coughlin this team needs to catch lightning in a bottle the second half of the year to stand a chance.

quietstormx1

lettuce be reality...

Eagles are not taking the second game.

It's quite clear Vick can not throw the ball when he does not have ample time. The defense did a pretty solid job of holding that offense in check, albeit they caught a few breaks with a dropped pass in the endzone and an overthrown jackson.

if the Giants clear up their mistakes, and don't turn the ball over so many times, they are one of if not the best in the NFC.

bradshaw needs to stop coughing it up and eli needs to stop playing like a retard.

My thoughts exactly.

The team needs to start getting more creative with it;s play calling right now without Smith.

Boss has great hands he should be utilized more to open up things for the WRs. Beckum is a mismatch for most LBs in the league they should be getting him involved more.

Bradshaw is clearly not the back he was a few weeks ago, I think Danny Ware should definitely get a shot at some carries. He looked very good in the few opportunities that he's gotten, and has fresh legs.

Manningham is very fast, why are they not stretching the field with him?

That's when I decided to turn the game off, too. Partly because I was so damn frustrated with Eli going head first and fumbling AGAIN, and partly because when I happened to be out of the room or flicking back and forth between the game and "The Walking Dead" it seemed that the Giants were doing better while I wasn't watching. So I hoped that giving up and going to bed would lead to an epic comeback....it didn't. :(

friggin giants... at least they came up with a win. this one was badly needed to stay strong in the playoff race. it looks like the eagles are going to drop a game so its anyone's division and anyone's wildcard. i still feel like the giants have the best team if they can just put it all together on a consistent basis.

also, just looked at the schedules for the giants and other teams in NFC playoff contention... the giants are gonna need some big wins against philly and/or green bay if they want to make the playoffs. other teams with similar records have easier schedules. tampa bay has the redskins, the lions, and seahawks, for example.

About the coaches, I think you guys might be right. The Giants always play better in the 2nd half of games. Which leads me to believer that all the coaches work in the week leading up to the game, scouting the other team and putting a game plan together, essentially fail. They come in the game with a plan, execute the plan according to what they see on film and fall flat on their faces. It;'s not until halftime when they make an adjustment to counter what the other team is doing that they play well. Sometime though, the team has dug a deep enough hole for themselves in the first half that they cannot recover from.

I said a while back in this thread just before the season started that we would lose a game because of our punter. He's gotten very, very close to making that statement true.

If he drops the ball it's usually because Eli throws to him when he is well covered.

giants o-line hasn't given up a sack in 4 games, says a lot when you factor in all the injuries on the line. they are on pace to give up the lowest amount of sacks in franchise history which was set back in the early 2000's.

I was just checking out some stats on NFL.com and was surprised to see Tyrell Thomas is leading the league in passes defensed. He has one more then Asante Samual with 20.

He's had a couple of rough outings this year, but it was against elite receivers. He's also way up on the chart of individual tackles.

If we didn't lead the league in turnovers we'd probably have the No. 1 offense lol.

I think the Giants kind of showed teams how to defend against Vick. unfortunately the Giants offense was terrible in the game so they lost, but I think the eagles will have a much tougher challenge from here on out.

Not to mention Asante Samual is ruled out of tonight's game. They will have to pay some serious attention to Andre Johnson, or he will light them up.

Yea the Bears pretty much followed our game plan of forcing him to the right side and it worked well for them too. Seems to be the only way to stop him right now.

Can't wait for the rematch, hopefully Smith and Nicks are back by then since that game will probably decide the division

I like the way Steve Smith is playing this. He's being very vague about how he is doing. He's listed as doubtful, not out. I'm getting the feeling that he is trying to keep the opposing teams defensive coordinators guessing.

Good story on Kenny Phillips by Mike Garafolo.

Giants S Kenny Phillips making a difference on Giants defense after recovering from injury

http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2010/12/giants_s_kenny_phillips_making.html

For the greater part of a Giants game, you can’t see Kenny Phillips. Well, at least not if you’re watching at home.

The Giants’ third-year safety is about 20 yards off the ball, back where he often likes to be, playing downhill, seeing more of the field and covering as much of it as he can.
Very few passes have come his way. So if you’re wondering where the former first-round pick has been, he’s back there doing what C.C. Brown, Aaron Rouse and Michael Johnson couldn’t do in 2009.

“Last year, teams were throwing the ball all over the place and everybody was wondering where the safeties were,” Phillips said this week. “Now, we’re discouraging that.

“I’m not saying I’m the cause, but I’d like to think I’m playing a part in it.”

Antrel Rolle has been a big factor in the Giants’ defense playing down low and blitzing off the edge. He’s also been all over the headlines for much of this season due to his outspoken nature. And fellow free-agent acquisition Deon Grant has done well from his pseudo-linebacker spot while grabbing three interceptions and making game-changing plays, such as his forced fumble and recovery late in a victory over the Lions.

So what’s been going on with Phillips? The hottest story line of the offseason on account of his prolonged recovery from knee surgery, he’s been a bit of a forgotten man around these parts.

But opposing offenses haven’t forgotten about him. Thanks in large part to his solid coverage on the back end of the secondary, the Giants have allowed only 26 completions of 20 or more yards — tied for fewest in the NFL.

“He’s gotten better and better,” coach Tom Coughlin said of Phillips, adding: “He’s getting to be more of himself. It’s a process, believe me.”

Phillips certainly looked like himself two weeks ago when he came across the field to whack Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin in mid-air as he tried to catch a deep pass up the left sideline.

Those are the kinds of plays that discourage deep balls.

“They’d been throwing the ball deep on everybody else. They couldn’t do it,” Phillips said of the Eagles. “They took one shot, broke it up.”

Said Coughlin of Phillips, “Any quarterback who is aware of what is going on and sees a guy in deep center field, it takes some things away.”

Phillips must take away the deep ball tomorrow. Donovan McNabb and the Redkins like to take their shots down the field, particularly to wide receiver Anthony Armstrong, who is averaging 21.8 yards per reception this season.

Then again, maybe Phillips won’t always be the safety deep to protect against the long ball.

“We’re switching it up a little bit. The last couple of games I’ve been able to get down there and mix it up,” Phillips said. “I like it. I’d like to be more involved. But if they call for me to be at the post (deep middle), it is what it is.”

So far, save for a shaky game against the Cowboys, it’s been all good for Phillips and his knee.

“You might look at it and say I’m not being productive. Well when you’re playing 15, 20 yards deep and with the type of guys we have up front, you’re not going to make too many tackles,” Phillips said. “And when they’re not throwing the ball, you’re not going to get too many shots. It just depends how you look at it.”

He added, “We all have our roles, and I feel like I’m playing mine well.”

neither of these teams have even stopped Vick. He still had great stats in both games.

lettuce be reality, the eagles could have easily hung 40+ on the giants that game. their receivers were dropping balls (3 tds) left and right in the end zone that game..

The Giants offense had more to do with the Giants losing against the eagles. If Steve Smith played in the game the Giants offense would have been able to sustain drives.

lol. The Eagles dominated the game bro.. the Eagles D practically gave that ****in game away in the second half..

coulda woulda shoulda.. this is on par with my argument about the eagles dropping balls.. its part of the game and happens to every team..

turnovers are part of the game.. look at the Saints last year.. the only reason they won was because they were the best in the league at getting turnovers...

eagles were leading the league in turnovers at the time of the giants game.
