My question is, is it possible to take too much protein supplement?
I am planning a wieght gain diet and am measuring out all the nutritions that i will need and planning meals. But i am finding it very hard to get enough protein per meal with out too much fat and carbohydrates so i am finding that i am increasingly beginning to relly on my protein powder to help acheive the needed protein. I haven't actually started the diet yet so i dont know the effects of what i have planned so far and will probally need to adjust it anyways. i will probally be taking a half-serving or a serving every breakfast and lunch is that too much? Any help would be greatly appriciated, thanks.

so that seems like 2 serving at most?? i don't think that's too much but, you can and should try to get protein from other sources. it's always good to diversify and "real" food is always recommended over supps.
-1 6oz can of tuna = 30g of protein, 1.5 fat
-16 oz of skim milk = 18g of protein, 0 fat
-3 egg whites = 10g of protein, 0 fat
Don't like some of these stuff?? suck it up and eat it, u won't even fell it.

You're bulking, define too many carbs. Also, this whole "MRP/protein shakes bad" attitude I see on the board is very puzzling.

I have also wondered about this. I am taking 3 protein shakes everyday that I lift. One when I wake up in the morning, one 20 min before I workout, and one rigth after I am done lifiting. I use 2 scoops with every shake, each scoop has 22g of protein. So just from protein shakes alone I am getting 132g of protein, Plus my normal meals throughout the day. I figure I am probobly eating close to 1g of protein for every pound that I weigh (190lbs) Anyone have any comments on this amount of protein? or if the times that I am taking it seems appropriate/effective?
Hopefully some of thses answers will help to answer your questions..

I think you should try to get AT LEAST 1 gram of protien per pound of body weight, depending on your goal too. Three shakes a day is fine. I drink 1 fisrt thing in the morning one right after workout and then one more after dinner. IT would be hard to get 200 or more protien from whole foods with supplementing them with protein powders. But it is very important you do get soild wholeosme meals in. Some where mentioned above
egg whites, fat free cottage cheese (a must before bed), chicken breast, canned tuna, cooked salmon, leans cuts of steak, fat free beef jerky, all natural peanut butter, raw oats, all your EFA's the list coudl go on. Eat those and more and you shall grow. best of luck

it is OK to take few shakes a day if you don't have time, but normal food should be your main source of protein (and not only them)

I'm on a bulking diet right now and I usually take in at least 4 scoops a day. I try to get over 300 grams of protein a day, sometimes near 400.

ac_surf, you mentioned tuna and it seems to me that tuna is like natures protein shake only really contains protein and lots of it. But i am told the mercury can build up in your body faster than it can be removed (this IS VERY SERIOUS and can lead to temporary Paralysis, learning disorders and even death) if you eat too much. Anybody know how much is too much?
oh and for bringnit too many carbs would be more than 350 a day
day meal
protein 265g 88.3
carb 365g 121.7
fat 90g 30

Chunk light tuna is about .12 parts per million of mercury, and solid albacore is .35 PPM. I believe the FDA recommendation is one can of chunk light per 3 days, or 1 can of albacore per week, but I can't verify that part.

Basically it's because food contains things you do not see in your shakes.
Nobody is saying that it's bad for you, but too much of any one food source is not good for you, just eating eggs would have the same end result, or just eating beef, you need to vary your diet and eat complete meals.
Besides, it's not very cost effective to ingest a pound of why/day.

I can understand too many whey shakes, but what about blends of proteins that are fortified with carbs and fiber, vitamins and minerals, etc.
And I would think you could find a MRP with a carb. ratio that would fit in that criteria.
EDIT: And I agree you should vary your diet but I see people say things like you should only have a set number of shakes a day, etc., otherwise it's bad for you.
