3/17: Allright! My first journal entry. I'm really glad this is here. If nothing else it'll make me be honest with myself. Of course if anyone wants to read and offer tips or feedback that would be great!
Today was a short workout on my lunch break, but it was a quality one.
*Back*
Lat pull downs (12@70#, & next 3 sets were 10@60#)
Single DB Rows (10@20#, 10@25#, 10@30#)
*Shoulders*
DB Presses (10@20#, 10@25#, 10@30#)
Lat Raises (10@10#, 10@15#, 10@15#)
*Biceps*
Incline DB Curls (10@15#, 10@17.5#, 10@20#)
Eats today are pretty good:
Meal#1 : Oatmeal, cottage cheese mix (cinnamon, glutamine & spenda added)
Meal#2: Tuna salad (capers, artichokes, onion, balsamic & olive oil) tossed on lettuce. And a little oatmeal.
Meal#3: Chicken breast and oatmeal with nuts and cinnamon
Plan for the rest of the day
Meal#4: 6 Egg whites, low-carb tortilla & salsa
Meal#5: More like a snack. Bowl of raw broccoli (my favorite veggie)
I'm also trying to get a gallon of water in, I've been slacking the past few weeks on the water. (Probably 1/2-3/4 gallon).
That's it for now....

Welcome! The ladies are great here, you'll get lots of support. What are your goals and stats?
sb_cali
03-18-2005, 02:48 PM
I guess it would help if I posted my stats and goals here... :)
I'm 39, 5'10", about 170-180, I'm guessing my BF if about 27%-28% only because of how my clothes are fitting and BF testings from the past.
I'd like to get to about 18% BF, (I think) I just imagine that at that point I'd have lost about most of my ... um.... pudge. I tend to have a pretty thick midsection and hold most of my body fat there. :(
More than concentrating on losing bodyfat, I'd like to just get more consistent with my workouts. Until now I'd been battling a couple of condtions that I think may have also slowed my progress down a bit.
I discovered that I'm hypothyroid and insulin resistant. I'm on meds for both so I feel like I have this fresh new *balanced* start!
Today's (short) workout:
Chest:
Flat bench BB (10@95#, 8@115#, 7@115#)
DB Flyes (10@20#,10@30#,10@30#)
Tri's:
Cable press (10@80#, 10@90#, 10@100#)
Cable press using rope (super slow 25@60#)
Dips (only 4)
It was a short workout, but my tris are spent :)
Meals today:
#1 - Cottage cheese & raw oats with cinnamon, spenda & glutamine.
#2 - Tuna with balsamic, olive oil on low-carb tortilla. Green beans & yellow peppers.
#3 - Chicken, 1/2 TB Nat PB, Green beans & yellow peppers. (Should of eaten a carb here)
#4 - Egg white, salad & yogurt
#5 - Big ol' bowl of broccoli.
Now that I'm getting my workouts in more often, I'm kinda thinking that I should be eating more. ??
I'll check in later!

"Meal 5" is not a meal. You need some protein in there. Add a meal 6 with some fats and protein before bed to take you through the night. When do you train? Your meals lok pretty balanced. What about some fruit in the AM or after your workout? Lots of fruits and veggies make you pretty ;)

Today's workout was a great 35 minutes of moderate/high cardio! I didn't do intervals or anything like that. But I tried a new elliptical and it was great! I could really feel it in my quads and not in my knees :)
Thanks for the "strong" compliment. I love lifting weights!
oh and... I realize that a big bowl of brocolli doesn't really make a meal.
My dilemna was that I was trying different things trying to get my morning fasting blood sugars lower. Actually now that I know I was suffering from a "dawn phenomenon" (liver dumping glucose in the early morning hours) I should probably add that protein and fat to my last meal. I'm also taking glucophage which is helping my blood sugar levels.
My other thing that I was battling was the fact that I hadn't made any progress in fat loss for the past several months. Apparently being insulin resistant wasn't helping anything. Ironically the best thing one can do to combat insulin resistance is to lose weight. Well duh.... talk about a catch-22. I wasn't sure if I should do whatever I could to lose a few pounds and thus improve my blood sugar levels.... or not. (That was my other reason for the low-cal broccoli-fest at night) I was actually skating through on about 1400-1500 kcals/day. :(
Anyway - my first meal today was some whole-grain cereal and met-rx protein powder (30 grams) and cinnamon.
Right now I'm about to make some egg white/oatmeal pancakes.
Oh - I almost forgot. I usually work out for about 45 min sometime between 12pm and 2pm. My schedule is a little hectic right now juggling my boy's school and weird shift my hubs is working. Weekend workouts are usually done at about 9am or 10am.
That's all for now :)

Yesterday (Sunday) was leg day. I must admit, I'm a bit bummed. I didn't do my usual leg routine and I didn't wake up sore this morning. :(
Oh well, but this is how it went:
Squats (10@115#, 10@135#, 8@135#, 4@165# - then 16@115#)
Extensions (3x10@70#)
Standing Hamstring curls-alternating (3x10@20#)
Incline seated calf (3x10@240#)
Donkey calf (2x10@300#)
I haven't decided if I'll workout today or not, I haven't been off since last Tuesday.
That's all for now.

Okay - While I've read this board for quite a while, I never really checked out all of the journals and pics. Oh my....
I feel so silly in here with my simple goal of being leaner. My gosh, all of you ladies are so fit with great definition. It's a little overwhelming.
I feel like I have such a long road ahead just trying to get to 18-20% BF - yet most of you are already below that.
My first thought was that I was out of my league posting here. On the other hand, where am I going to get such great inspiration and advise?
So I'm going to stick around. :) But man....looks like I better get my booty in gear ;)
One more thing... my other goal is to compete in a sprint triathalon here in August. So I guess I have 2 goals for now.
kkapp
03-21-2005, 04:38 PM
you are NOT out of your league... everyone is welcome... no matter what your goals are!
Some are going for fitness competition... some are doing it for personal reasons... some are getting married soon and want to look awesome walking down the isle (that would be me)... some are trying to bulk up and gain...some are trying to cut and lose... everyone has their own personal reasons and goals.
And if you don't get responses to your posts... keep them up, because many people just read them and don't always respond. We all get ideas from everyone posts.
WELCOME!!!!!

Just wanted to jump in and say getting leaner (ok and stronger upper body) is my only goal too :) I gained weight over the summer/fall/winter and want to get back in the shape I used to be. While I'd love to have competing as a goal someday, I just dont' have the money to first of all be able to get access to heavier weights than what I have (which is just 25 pound changable dumbells, and other smaller dumbells) let alone the fees it takes to compete let alone the prices i've read it takes for the suits they wear :o
I guess I kind of feel out of my league a little though too, because so many terms are used and I have no idea what it means. But I don't mind learning, everyone here is so helpful with my questions :)

Whew! I feel much better! But I am still quite in awe of most of your stats.
I didn't work out yesterday - but today's plan is for a nice long cardio. I'm working 6a-3p today so I'll work through lunch and get my cardio in at 2pm.
That way I don't have to deal with showering and changing back into my work clothes.
I've added up what I planned on eating today and it's looking like a pretty light day. (For me anyway)
1552 kcal
158 g. protein
145 g. carbs (37 g. fiber)
36 g. fat
P C F
(41%/37%/21%)
I'm thinking I'll leave todays meals alone and up my cals tomorrow. I've heard of some people having lower calories on cardio days and higher cals on weight-lifting days. Does this sound okay?

Oh wow - this week is FLYING by! I can't believe it's Thursday already.
I missed posting yesterday but my workout was a bit different anyway. I went jogging around the neighborhood with my little boys riding their bikes. I was pooped! The cool thing is that we have a pond in our neighborhood and a big beautiful swan has been hanging around. It's really pretty, although he seems a little short tempered with the ducks around. :D
Today's workout was back and bis. I started out on lat pull downs and did 3 sets of 10 before I realized we got a new lat pull down machine in the next room. I had to try that too! It's a lever machine where you add the weights - kinda like hammerstrength. I'll use that one from now on, it's pretty cool.
Needless to say I did 6 sets of lat pull downs and followed it with 3 sets of one-armed DB rows (30#)
Biceps:
Seated DB curls (3x10@20#)
Standing Hammer (10@10#, 10@12.5#, 10@15#)
Meals today have been clean, my favorite was meal #3 with chopped chicken, artichokes, feta cheese and a little sun-dried tomatos and balsamic vinegar. YUM! (oh and carrots too!)
I've been slacking on the water, so I better start chugging.
I'll check in tomorrow -- see ya.

Sounds like a BEAUTIFUL time jogging! And even cooler you got to share it with your kids!
That meal DOES sound delicious as well, I love feta!
Sounds like you got a great workout in too :)

Hi - I thought I would jump in here since I haven't been yet...I did notice that you aren't having a PWO shake? Is that correct? I would highly recommend it. Otherwise with a few other tweaks your diet looks very healthy and balanced.
sb_cali
03-25-2005, 02:33 PM
Thanks for the responses.... ;)
About the PWO - I just wasnt sure if/how I should work it into my menu. The last time I had a shake my blood sugar jumped too high. I'm not sure if it was the whey protein powder or what, but it kinda scared me. All I remember about PWO is that they are heavier on the simple carbs for fast glucose up-take, so I don't know if that would be good for me or not. (Just call me confused :) )
My other thing is that if it's true that one can only pick one at a time (lose fat vs. gain muscle) I really want to lean down. Anything special that I should do nutrition-wise for that?
Today's workout was 40 min of moderate cardio. My bi's and back are sore from yesterday! (yippee) So tomorrow I'm thinking of a push workout.
Eats today have been pretty clean. Eggs/potato for breakfast. (It was a "work" breakfast and I felt a little silly about whipping my cold chicken breast out of my purse, so I settled for the eggs.)
Meal#2: Cottage Cheese & Oatmeal w/a little fiber one.
Meal#3: about 2 oz chicken breast and a balance bar (I know - not the best choice, but I didn't plan well today)
Meal#4: trying JumpinJill's cottage cheese enchiladas!
Meal#5: Broccoli & protein shake.
Can't forget my water!
Please let me know what tweaks and tips you've got for me!
Thanks!

It's Sat morning and a beautiful day!
I'm just finishing up my cottage cheese/oatmeal mix and then a quick dash to the store for a few things. I figure giving myself 30-40 minutes after eating is a good amount of time before working out. yah?
Anyway - then I'll take the boys to the YMCA for my workout. They play in the kids gym and I'll do that push workout that I didn't do yesterday. For some reason I ended up doing cardio yesterday and I don't know why I didn't do my planned workout.
After that I took the boys to the playground and shot some baskets. I love basketball, not to be confused with my being actually any *good* at basketball. heh-heh.
Hopefully this afternoon we can go swimming or something outdoors again. It's finally sunny here in So.Cal. (yippee :D )

Okay - I just had the greatest, exhausting, workout! I'm all wobbly! :D
Is this weird or does this happen to anyone else before their workout...? I get nervous. It's like I'm going to talk in front of a crowd, I actually get butterflies in my stomach. It usually only happens on leg day, but it's kinda odd.
I started out on the leg press and completed 4 sets of 10@450#. I took it nice and slow and got a good range of motion in there. Then I noticed that someone conveniently left a barbell on the floor with the 25#s on it so I did some SLDL's. 2 sets with 95# and 1 set with 115#.
Then squats... this is my favorite. (it's more of a love/hate thing actually).
3 sets of 10... (a$$ to calves) @115#.
At this point I'm sweating, breathing hard and very grateful that the weight room is crowded. There's just something about finishing up a set of squats when you want to die (or throw-up) and the "boyz" are watching to see if you can hack it. I'll do anything to save face so I finished up and tried really hard to walk gracefully out to the drinking fountain. My legs were numb however.... I did a few quick, light sets of leg extensions and calf presses and called it a day. I was definitely done. ;)
So now I'm eating my apple and chicken breast.
Earlier I had:
#1 - LF Cottage Cheese & Oatmeal
#2 - Chicken breast, asparagus and LC Tortilla
#3 - (eating apple and chick. breast now)
#4 - Fish tacos
#5 - protein shake & broccoli
Yesterday I didn't work out - it was Easter so we hung out at the house and managed to avoid all easter candy except for one small Hershey's dark miniature. Whew!
Anyway - it was a great day today! Tomorrow I'll do cardio.

Hi there,
Well my plan disintegrated a bit last night when we actually got to the mexican food restaurant. :(
I can usually be good and avoid the chips and then order the healthy fish tacos. Darn it. We got there and I was just so darn hungry - I ate chips. Not a whole basket or anything like that, but more than 10-12. (sigh)
I then ordered the tri-tip burrito, which in itself isn't that bad. no sauce, no cheese, no rice or beans. Just tortilla, steak, lettuce, tomato and a little bit of avocado. I got home and felt guilty (& full) so I skipped my last meal.
I just added up my totals and my protein is too low and the fat was too high. All in all it was about:
1546 kcal
31% protein (120 grams)
37% carbs (142 grams)
32% fat (55 grams)
I'll check in later with todays stats as soon as I get my cardio done :)
WannaBe: Thanks for the compliments on the leg press! Did I read your journal right where you say you do walking lunges with 45's in each hand?!? Wow - that's great!! and I thought I was doing good with the 25's.... LOL

Hi sb cali, we have very similar stats, I'm 6 feet and right now about 178. I think I'm about 27-28% bf now and I too want to get down to 18-20%! I can't even touch the weights you are doing though-----soooooo impressive. I did walking lunges with 20s today though which was pretty good for me :P The weight you put up is very inspirational and I am going to keep up with your journal...let me know what works for you and when you start to see some major changes! My biggest problem areas are my butt and hips so we probably carry our weight similarly. A good thing though is that tall girls can really weigh a lot but look a lot smaller...whenever I tell someone my weight they are shocked! Keep us posted on your progress!

Hi arose70!
Thanks for jumping in! First off, I gotta tell you that I think it's so cool you're 6' tall! WOW. (I wouldn't mind being a couple of inches taller) :) I was reading your journal too and am impressed with your playing basketball. I'm a "wannabe" baller, but after watching some of the pickup games at the Y, I know I'd get creamed. LOL (I'm not really what you'd call...um... "good")
My cardio workout yesterday was a 15min on the bike and 20 min on the elliptical. My plan was to go for higher intensity, but when I changed into my workout clothes I realized I'd forgotten my sport bra. Dang. I hate it when that happens... In a moment of weakness I almost thought about skipping my workout (duh) but then realized how stupid that sounded and decided to do a no-impact workout and ride the bike. Cardio ended up being a good one after all AND I had full-coverage-shaping the whole time too :D
My other problem (and let me tell you how odd this is for me) is that I only came up with 1454 calories yesterday. I just haven't been that hungry lately and maybe it's the new med I started a few weeks ago, but this is highly unusual for me. I'm also getting a lot more sleep than I used to and going to bed earlier so I'm not eating as much at night.
Yesterday's breakdown was
kcal: 1454
protein: 126
carbs: 126
(fiber: 37)
fat: 49
35% - 35% - 30%
On the other hand, since it was a cardio day, maybe it was okay that my cals were on the low end.

Hi again sb cali, that is so funny about your sports bra-I hate it when that stuff happens! Actually, yesterday I was changing in a bathroom stall at work to go to the gym and dropped one of my socks in the toilet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it! I picked it out before it got all wet and then it went right into the trash...so I worked out with only one sock! It wasn't noticeable though because I wear those little ones but still, my left foot kinda felt funny!

03-30-2005, 05:11 PM
I'm back - finished up a back/shoulder workout late this afternoon. I think it could have been longer, but I only had about 40 minutes to work out and get to the school to pick up my son.
I started with lat pull downs, then reverse grip pull downs and then one-arm DB rows. I moved on to the shoulder press and lat raises. Did a few verticle knee raises and quickly left. It was like a speed-workout and I realize I don't really like it when I rush it like that. :(
Food today has been super clean so far and lots of water. It's blazin' hot here today for some reason, but I love it!
Oh and Arose... love the sock in the toilet story :D Nothing like changing in a small bathroom stall at work, is there? I haven't dropped a sock in the toilet yet, but my boys have thrown many in the toilet at home while stripping down for bath-time. LOL.

Sb - Hi!
How are you feeling on the food ratios you are eating? Are you hungry at all during the day or the middle of the night? I would like to see your protein a little higher and a PWO shake right after (within 30 minutes) of your cardio or weight workout - can you do that? I buy Isopure which is an isolate (it doesn't have any carbs, sugars etc...) For 1 scoop it is 100 cals/25grms. protein...I usually add oats and berries or you can add ff/sf yogurt or skim milk and a banana...what do you think? I really think you need a good recovery shake....btw, what kind did you have that made you all jittery?
Keep up the solid workouts - your #'s are great!

Hi Jennifer-Lynn,
I'm feeling okay about my food ratios. I'm surprised at how I'm not really hungry at all lately. I've been averaging about 1500 calories this past week.
(35%,35%,30%) BUT I usually have a cheat-meal on the weekend, although it's not too wild anymore because I'm avoiding sugar. (Kinda takes the fun out of the cheat :D )
I think the protein powder I used was V-60 (Labrada) and I can't remember what I added to it. I just know that when I went to check my blood glucose an hour later it was way over 140 (and it should be less than that). Maybe if I added oats or strawberries it would be better. (In fact that sounds really good right now).
I remember reading something about whey being digested quicker than a complex or something... I'll check it out.
I've heard lots of good things about Isopure, I may see if our supplement store carries it.
And... what *should* my ratios look like? Sometimes they're 40/40/20 too...
Thanks for the help! :)

Hey - it's Friday and it's another gorgeous day here! I'm also trying to pretend I'm not coming down with a cold. I figured if I just ignored it and tried to be optimistic, it would go away... (fingers crossed).
I'm upping the water today just in case.
Yesterday I didn't get a workout in. I was out of town and by the time I got back I was not feeling so great. I kept my food clean and tried to get some good sleep last night.
I did just add up yesterday's meals and I'm really surprised it's as low as it is. I keep thinking I'm eating more than I am. I'm going to shoot for 1700 calories today. Does that sound okay?
Yesterday's totals:
1336 kcal (bad... I know)
33% protein
36% carbs (34 g. fiber)
31% fat
Wednesdays calories were about 1600 with the same ratios, by the way.
I'm going to pop over to the nutrition store to look for protein powder as soon as I can sneak a break in. Then I'm going to try for 45 min of moderate cardio later today.

I'm headed over to the gym in about 15 min. I don't mean to sound like I'm bragging (really), but I'm so proud of myself this week for sticking to my plans. I've worked out and ate clean and didn't allow myself any excuses. Even though one day I forgot my sports bra :D Honestly, I'm really good at finding reasons to delay or change a workout sometimes. I finally feel like I'm making some progress! (Thank goodness for bb.com! It's kept me honest and accountable)
Yesterday I managed to get up to roughly 1650 calories.
Well - I'm off to my workout. 45 min of cardio today - yesterday was biceps and a short cardio (30 min). Tomorrow I'll work chest/tri's.
Check ya later!

What a great break! My family and I just spent a fun, relaxing vacation going on a baja cruise! It was SO nice to just get away from TV, computers and work. :D We played in the pool, went walking around the different ports, didn't eat too much and spent some time in the ship's gym! Not too shabby.
The best part for me and my 6 year old was signing him up to climb the rock wall. They have an easy climb for the little ones and I was so proud! He almost made it to the top and the youngest one out there! ;) My initial thought was I'd just be there for him, but when the rock staff asked me if I was going to climb and said yes! (I've never done it before and thought it sure would suck to come back home and then regret saying no). I was afraid of falling on my butt, but nothing ventured..... It was GREAT! I was nervous, but I loved it! It made me feel especially good when the girl working the ropes remarked that I had a great climb and had impressive strength. I think I must have smiled the whole rest of the day. It was a special time too because I got to share it with my little boy.
And so.... I'm back now and ready for a great leg workout today!
I'll check in later when I've added up my calories and finished my workout.
sb_cali
04-11-2005, 04:13 PM
I just finished with my leg workout and at first I wasn't sure I had exhausted my legs, but an hour later now and I'm thinking I did. :D
Squats: 3 sets of 8@115#, 1 set of 8@135#, 1 set of 5@165#, then dropped back down to 115# and did 2 sets of super-slow, super-low of 12 reps.
Leg extensions: 3 sets of 10@80#
Seated Hammies: 3 sets of 10@100#
Seated calf raises 2 sets of 15 @#60
Then some hanging knee raises and dips.
I went out and bought some Isopure today to bump up my protein intake a bit. So I just finished drinking up my PWO shake. So far it looks like I'll hit about 1635 calories today. (almost 170 grams of protein... yah?)
I've been slacking on the water, so I better get going on that.
Peace :D

Okay - It's Wednesday morning.... 2 days after my leg workout and lemme tell ya. I'm sore and loving it :D
Yesterday was an off day and so I just made sure my eating was clean. I did manage to hit 1700 calories so I was pretty pleased about that. I'm not sure the ratios were the best. They ended up being about 33%/33%/33%.
Today my plan for meals is:
1: Oatmeal - Cottage Cheese mix (I'm can't believe I'm not burned out on this yet)
2: Tuna (w/ a little dressing) & sweet potato
3: Chicken breast & apple and 1 TB natty PB
4: Low carb tortilla, egg whites & chickpeas w/salsa
5: Protein shake & broccoli
I usually like to have more veggies, but I'm all out - except for my yummy broccoli.
Cardio is the plan for my workout today - and maybe some ab work at home later tonight :)

I enjoyed reading your journal.
I also have 2 boys 6&8...
I love climbing the rock wall.. My oldest son loves it too.. I think the first time he climbed he was about 6... so cool!!
I cant wait till they build one here locally... there is one about an hour away we have been too!
Im impressed with what you can lift.
Keep up the good work!!

Geez - ever have one of those days where EVERYTHING is planned almost down to the minute? and then one thing throws everything off? I knew it was going to be a busy day and so I got to work at 6am so I could be walking out the door at 2pm.
(Warning: Long vent)
This is how my day was *supposed* to go:
Work
Cardio
Pick up son from school and then other son from my dad's house
get home, help with homework, make dinner, clean up, take the boys to swim lessons, get home, showered and to bed by 9pm.
(Sigh)
I got stuck right about 1:50 and was pinned down by the office guy (that no on likes) to create a "quick" report. Uh..... he had no idea what he was asking but dang it all... once I finally figured out what he wanted it was 2:40pm. I missed my cardio window. Then I decided I'd jump-rope at home. Ummmm.... nix that too. Our fish was spazzing out and we had to take him to the pet store to have them take a look at him. (Needless to say the little guy: Schnitzel-Rickety didn't make it through the night)
Add to that the neighbors coming by to drop by for a visit with their kids. (translate: sweet kids, but all the toys were dragged out)
Bottom line: no cardio for me. I was frustrated at how one little thing can upset my whole schedule. The killer part is that the guy at work didn't even USE the report I gave him. Prolly because he's too busy boot-licking to understand what the information was.. (Grrrrr)
Anyway - I'm usually calm and easy-going, but yesterday I was so set on working out. I was feeling rather pudgy and since I didn't work out on Tuesday I was due. Maybe I'm just PMS'ing too. At least my eats were clean.
This morning I was up at 5:30 to get that cardio done. Whew! It was great too!
Oh and Stephanie! thanks for posting. It's always a pleasant surprise to see that someone popped in on my journal! :D

Hey Sb Cali, those days are tough...sounds like you had mental cardio ;) Great job on getting up this morning to do it though! And you ate clean so no worries there (unlike my chinese buffet last night lol!!)
Great job!

Okay - I'm a big ol' nerd but I was so excited that I finally have TWO pages of journal. woop!
<<< Hi Arose! >>>
I'm feeling pretty good today about my meals. My big question is that when I read other journals I see some encouragement for others to eat more. I'm not sure if I should up my cals or not.
I'm guessing my weight to be about 175 and I'm 5'10". I'd put my bodyfat% to be about 27% (sigh). I carry all my weight around my middle and lately noticed my chunky-dimpled tri's ... hmmm not sure when that happened.
This is what my calories look like today:
1702 calories
166 g protein
151 g carbs
47 g fat
37.5 g fiber
protein/carbs/fat
39%/36%/25%
I typically end up about 1500 and then try to figure out what to add to bump up the calories. And... I must admit, I find it pretty comical that I'm eating so little. Let me tell ya, honestly, I love food and usually have no problem putting it away. :D

Hey! I swear we'd be looking into a mirror if we saw each other, my body is the exact same I'm just a couple inches taller! I have been shooting for 1800/day to start, but that's just cause I used to eat like 800/day :( I have been doing pretty well but I know how hard it is to get all those cals in when they are good cals :) I have the biggest problem getting over 1300 but once i do that I'm rolling to 1800. I have actually increased a lot of calorie dense foods, sunflower seeds, PB(love/hate relationship there!), avocado, etc. This has increased my fats considerably but I feel better with the extra cals and I don't think it is hindering me at this point. Once I feel better with 1800 and get more comfortable I will take some of those fats out and replace with lower fat foods. Good luck!

I just love Fridays! :D
It's 3:30 and I just finished eating the last of my 1 TB of peanut butter from my spoon. Ahhh... I just love PB.
Anyway - meals today have been good:
#1 - Oatmeal/Cottage Cheese mix
#2 - 6 oz tuna on artichokes/cherry tomatos. & 3 oz sweet potato on the side.
#3 - 45 g. isopure protein, 3 oz sweet potato & 1 TB natty PB (it was supposed to be my PWO meal, but my workout got delayed)
---workout---
#4 - Shrimp & eggwhites with salsa, low carb tortilla & cheese
#5 - Broccoli along with a small protein shake.
Totals:
1649 calories
189.9 protein
119.7 carbs
45.3 fat
28 fiber
I'm just headed out to do my workout in about 1/2 hour and today it's back & bis.
I'm going to play around with the camera this weekend and see if I can get some pics to upload. It's a scary thought, but I'm hoping that I can get some good feedback on how to proceed with my workouts & food.
Happy Friday!!

It's Tuesday and I'm trying to keep the momentum up with my workouts. My eating wasn't very good yesterday. I never stopped to take the time to eat dinner and then I ended sipping on two glasses of wine through the whole evening. (6pm-10pm) I did eat later on at about 9:30, but it was just some broccoli and a low-carb tortilla with feta cheese & sun-dried tomatos. (I can't believe I'm actually copping to it... but I'm trying to keep it real here).
I know myself enough that I realize I get in a funk a couple of days every month, but being the knucklehead I sometimes am, I went clothes shopping yesterday on my lunch break and EWWWW! :( It wasn't a pretty sight. I left the store in a negative mindset, drove to the gym and actually had a good workout. If I'd been on the ball, I would have stopped my negative thoughts right there. But for some reason, the yucky feeling remained. I'm not sure at what point I thought skipping dinner and having wine instead was a brilliant idea, but that's what I did. Maybe I thought I would wake up "feeling thinner" if I didn't eat. I know...... duh.
So here I am today - still feeling a bit like a pudge-pot, but am eating right and looking forward to my cardio later on.
I'll check back later - better get back to work. :)

It's Wednesday and Tuesday was much better than Monday :)
Yesterday my calories were 1764! I was pretty pleased and my ratios were:
37% protein
37% carbs
26% fat
and I got in 45 grams of fiber :D
I still need to drink more water though.... I also am glad that I got my workout in yesterday. I only had 30 min so I decided to try HIIT on the elliptical. Now... I'm not sure if I did it right, but this is what I did:
Started out with a 5 min. warmup
30 seconds all out "sprint"
90 seconds *jog*
I alternated this for about 5-6 sets.... I couldn't believe how much I sweated or how I though my lungs would burst! I finished up with 10 minutes cool down at a moderate pace. Total time was 25 minutes. I'll definitely do that workout again.
This afternoon I plan on working legs!

04-20-2005, 03:49 PM
I gotta say... it's great having the weight room all to yourself :D
Actually there was 1 or 2 guys filtering in and out, but at least no competition for the squat rack. Good thing cuz I was hogging it.
I started off with squats.
10@115
10@115
8@165
4@165... and then 2@185 - (just to see)
and then 2 sets of 10 (super slow) back at 115.
SLDL's - 3 sets - 10 @ 95#
Leg extentions - 3 sets - 10@80# (super slow)
Standing calf raises - 3 sets - 12@130#
The only problem with my workout today was that I felt like I have a *kink* in my back and everytime I went down with my squats I'd get this little stab. Now it's like a dull little ache in my lower back... sacrum area on the left. I'll try to get some stretching in later on when I get home and maybe that will help. Thank goodness I have sweet little boys, they always are good at giving their mommy a nice back rub!

Checking in on Thursday afternoon. It's such a pretty day here... I'm not much of a runner, but this sunny day has me thinking that I should start. I'd much rather be out by the beach than doing cardio on a machine... inside the gym. Maybe I'll give the jogging a try this weekend :)
Food yesterday was right on. No cheats :D
Calories: 1660
154 g protein
135 g carbs
55 g fat
27 g fiber
Protein Carbs Fat
37% 33% 30%
I'm not as sore from my leg workout as I usually am. (poop) I like that feeling of every muscle in your legs screaming when you stand up... or sit down... LOL.
Cardio is the plan for my afternoon workout. I might do the rowing machine today. I've never done it for more that 10 minutes - wonder if I can last 40? hmmmm....
sb_cali
04-22-2005, 09:02 AM
Okay - I'm totally digging the rowing machine. :D I went ahead and tried it yesterday and while I didn't last 40 minutes... I only lasted 15 minutes LOL.....
Actually I did the rowing machine 15 minutes, then elliptical for 15 and then the rower for another 10. 40 minutes total. I felt great afterwards!
On a VERY amusing note.... I'm leaving the gym and walking down the hallway where they have a board posting some of the member's feedback/suggestions and then a response from the staff.
Now... they've just remodeled the cardio room and the free-weight room. Both room are much bigger and have brand-spankin'-new equipment. One of the feedback forms reads:
"...is there any way you can make the weight-room more *woman friendly*?.."
HUH??? What the heck? hmmmm... maybe she'd like pink dumbbell here or there.. Or perhaps a nice mauve colored flat bench. It does have the super-light dumbells (although not in a pastel color) I don't get it. Hellllooooo, it's a WEIGHT room. LOL. Not overly masculine.. it's like everyother room in the place. Unisex. I actually laughed out loud when I read that....
People just crack me up....
Anyway, my meals for yesterday totaled 1708 calories.
Protein = 180g 42%
Carbs = 124g 29%
Fat = 54g 29%
Fiber = 30g
Today's planned workout will be back/bi's later on. :)

I love it when I see visitors to my journal... Thanks so much for popping in :D
I just got done working back/bi's and yet again I FORGOT MY SPORTS BRA! (doh!) I hate it when I do that. That's what I get for not packing my gym back the night before. :p
I dropped my reps to 8 from 10 for a little change.
Lat Pull downs = 3 sets at 70#s. The funny thing about this is that when I'm at Gold's I can do quite a bit more.. I wonder if it's the cable or the pulleys that are causing more resistance and making it harder. oh well.
Single DB Rows - 3 sets: 25# - 30# - 35#
Reverse grip pull downs - 60# - 70# - 60#
Incline DB Curls - 3 sets 20#
21's - 3 sets with 30# barbell
Reverse grip BB curls - 3 sets: 20# - 30# - 40# (I'm not sure I did these right... I need to look these up)
I'm going to go make my PWO shake now too! mmmm Protein powder & sweet potato :D (all out of fruit)

Oops! - Slept right through my morning workout this a.m. :( But I did get some good sleep (which is rare) so I'll deal with it and workout on my lunch break. :)
It was actually kind of weird... I started getting super sleepy last night about 9pm so I went to bed at 9:30p, set my alarm for 5:30 and I hardly remember turning it off. I woke up at 6:45 instead... LOL I'm glad I have the option to work out later today.
I took Saturday off from working out yet I ate pretty clean. Sunday food was pretty clean too (not 100%, but not too shabby). I went to the gym and did cardio:
warmed up for 15 minutes then HIIT for about 8-9 minutes and then cooled down for the next 10 minutes.
Today I plan on chest/shoulders/tri's. Once again I'm lowering my reps to 8 and hope it helps me lift a little heavier. The only problem I'm having with doing flat bench press is that the dang scoring on the barbell hurts my hands. I don't care for gloves - I just wished I'd grabbed my neoprene scraps. I'd planned on making some lifting-pads. (about 4" circles that you put in your palms before grabbing the bar).
Anyhoo.... that's all for now - I'll check in later with my lifting numbers.

04-25-2005, 03:20 PM
I just finished up my work-out. Although I didn't include shoulders, it was just chest & tris.
I'm a little bummed about a couple of things however:
#1 - I don't know how to get my bench #'s back up. Is it just a matter of consistency? Last year I was about to get out a couple of reps at 155#, today I barely squeaked out 3 reps at 135#. :( I had swapped the flat bench barbell out for DB's a while ago. Any ideas?
#2 - Whoever said that exercise would get rid of cramps lied. (grrr) I was going to tack on some pushups at the end of my workout, but I really just wanted to lie down and curl up on one of those mats. LOL
Regardless - here's the work-out for today (8 reps each):
Flat bench BB press - 95#, 115#, 135# (only 3 reps at this weight)
DB Incline press - 30#, 40#, 45#
DB Incline flyes - 30#, 30#, 30#
Skullcrushers with EZ curl bar: 20#, 30#, 30# (in addition to the bar)
Triceps cable press downs: 70#, 80#, 90#
I could have gone higher on the DB incline presses, but it's getting them into position that's the hard part. (I miss having a workout buddy sometimes)
I'm gonna go make my PWO shake and take some aleve.... :)

Thanks Stephanie! Yep - definitely feeling better today. I even got up at 5:30 am and did my cardio as planned! 45 minutes moderate cardio on the bike. I was surprised that I had my heart rate up there because usually my legs burn out way before my lungs do.
My meals started off good yesterday and then towards the end of the day they kind of fizzled. It wasn't that I ate anything bad, I just kind of lost my appetite. (Highly unusual for me :p ) I had a little bit of beef for dinner and that was it. The rest of the fam was having baked fries and then ice cream for dessert. Ironically it's the low-fat/no-sugar added ice cream that I bought for myself. heh-heh... I wasn't about to tell them it was the "healthy" ice-cream. Anyway - that didn't sound good either so I just ended up going to bed and never even had my 5th meal.
Although... I think I'll be making up for it today. I had a tiny protein/pb snack before my morning cardio at 5:30am. Then at 8:45 I had:
cottage cheese, oatmeal, walnuts, cinnamon & splenda.
Okay - I'm freaking out on the nuts though. I measured 1 oz of walnuts, threw them in my mix and ate up! (YUM) Then I looked up the nutritional value of 1 oz of walnuts. Hellooooooo - 18 grams of fat! yipes  So my morning meal was close to 500 calores. Looks like it may be a hi-cal day. yah?
Looking forward to tomorrow >>>> it's my leg workout. Yay!

1. 155lbs?? If so, dang girl- that is a ton of weight! My bench is only at 130lbs and I thought that was decent! Sheesh.
-Anyway, switching heavy bench/low reps and light weights/high reps is the way I do it when I want to up my bench. Remember to give your muscles time to grow inbetween days, so don't bench every day. Maybe 2x a week. Make sure you are cross-trainning your chest with other exercises (ie: flies and other chest exercises) Also get some protein in ya and watch your bench go right back to where it was! Good Luck
2. Hehe, exercise doesn't get rid of cramps, it just gets you to focus on a different muscle group so the pain kinda transfers. lol Curl up on the mats- I think everyone wants to do that every once in a while!
-Anyway, this is the first time I have seen your journal. Man, you wake up early and do cardio. Great respect for you AMers! I would so much rather do the late night scene.
Thanks for posting in my journal. I easily have the work outs down, its the nutrition that is kicking my butt. Sometimes I just wish food wasn't so gosh darn important!
Oh well, everyone has to deal w/ the same thing.
Keep on trucking with your excellent work, you go girl!!!

Hey - it's Thursday and I can't wait for the weekend! Actually I'm looking forward to sleeping in on Saturday... which means 7:30 or 8. Ha... So funny thinking back to when sleeping in meant 10 or 11. Wow.
Yesterday morning I got up and went to do legs for my early morning workout. I thought it was a great workout, yet again, I'm not really feeling it. poop.
{8 reps each}
Leg press: 360# - 430# - 500#
Squats: 115# - 135# - 135#
Alternating leg extentions: 40# all sets
Seated Hamstring: 180# all sets
Donkey calf raise: 320# all sets
Incline Calf Raise 240# all sets
Food was good:
1762 Total Calories
144 g protein
153 g carbs
62 g fat
31 g fiber
I probably shouldn't of had the PB and had some protein instead. I just hadn't been adding up my calories because I was on the road all day.
Although.... :p On Tuesday I had almost 2000 calories. Feels weird, but I figured since leg day would be Wednesday morning it would be okay.
Megin: Thanks for posting in my journal - and hey! a bench of 130 is great! honestly, I've seen quite a few guys who struggle with 115#. And... I'm not that much of an AMer.. LOL You should hear the internal dialog in my head when my alarm goes off at 5:15. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes of self-talk before I finally get out of bed. Of course, when I'm done with my workout I'm always glad I got up. :D

Hey WB - that's funny that you think I'm strong, I read some of the other journals here and sometimes I feel like a total wimp.. LOL - but thanks! I must admit it is fun putting more plates on the leg press than most of the boyz in the gym. ;)
Steph: ah... PB - I love it, (unfortunately) Maranatha organic natural PB is the best I've found so far. When I go back and taste jif or skippy it's just not the same.
I played around with my camera and took some pics last night. Although my littlel guys kept banging on the bathroom door wondering what was taking me so long. LOL - I'll have to try again because most of the pics I took didn't turn out that good. I do have one pic I'll put out there just so you can see what I'm working with here.. :D It's actually just a bicep shot.
Yesterday I popped into the gym for a quick HIIT cardio session. I don't think it was an intense as it could have been. I warmed up for 10 minutes and then alternated:
30 seconds sprinting
60 seconds jogging
I did this for 8 intervals and was pouring sweat, but my quads were giving out way before my lungs again. Maybe the elliptical isn't the best option for trying HIIT.
My food yesterday had my ay 1700 calories with 40%/40%/20% ratios. (not too shabby)
I'm not exactly sure what workout to do today. I can do either back/bi's or shoulders/abs or back/bis/shoulders and do abs/cardio tomorrow. Hmmm....

Hey there! Thanks arose, megin & steph for popping in! I'll admit, I was a little nervous to post that pic.
Arose - your head would explode? ha! Too funny. Actually, sometimes when I grab the heavy weights and start going (I'm up to the 55# dumbbells for flat bench) I notice some of the guys look over and at first I'm flattered and then there's that little voice that says.. "hey - people stare at circus freaks too" Yikes! I don't mind being strong, and I can say I've embraced my inner "amazon" heh-heh, but I don't want to be the "big-weird-girl" either. Not sure what they're thinking. Obviously though I can't wait to pick up the 60#s ... what-ever :D
Yesterday's workout was back-bis-abs.
Assisted pull-ups: (overhand grip) and I think I like the assist that you stand on vs. the kneeling one. But oh well. I tried for 8 reps, but it was more like 6-4-4-3. I had the assist on the 60# plate. Once I can't pull up I just try to do negatives slowly.
Yates rows: have never done these before and wasn't sure what weight to use so I started with the 30# barbell and went up from there until I found a good weight: 40# -- 50# -- 60# --75# -- 90# The 90# seemed to be a good weight. Next time I'll start with that one. I actually ended up doing 6 sets of 8 reps.
Standing alternating DB curls: 20# - 25# - 30# (8 reps each)
Single arm preacher DB curls: 15# - 17.5# - 20# (8 reps each)
Then just ab crunches, hypers and a little work with the weighted balls.
I didn't really think I'd feel it today - especially because the yates rows don't have a big range of motion, but I DO feel it. Cool!
My food was about 1720 calories.
194 g. protein :D
131 g. carbs
46.5 g. fat
31.5 g. fiber
Today was going to be my off day because it's Saturday and I've worked out 6 days straight... But...... my kids love going to the gym, so I'll take them and get my shoulder workout in (misssed that this week) and maybe a little moderate cardio. Then it's all about the sunshine!
Maybe go to the beach or go swimming.

Hey Sb, I understand your weird, amazon thing....its something us tall girls have had to deal with. But, 55# bench????? You are sooooo strong!!!! That is super impressive, and I know those guys are staring at you because they are impressed too----and maybe rethinking their training :p
I feel you though, when I see another tall girl I am like damn, she's huge!!!!!!!! Then I stand next to her and she's 2 inches shorter than I am! ha! Oh well, I've learned to embrace the tallness and the stature that goes with it. And I'm no skinny girl either, my husband calls me big and thick all the time, and I take it as a compliment! Since I've started lifting heavy I carry myself with more confidence and it is noticable...I even stand up straighter and look taller than usual!!! You definitely look beautiful and not even remotely close to "circus freak" so put that thought outta your mind. Be proud of yourself and act like it, I sure would be if I had your arms :)

Sunday - Day off! :D Still eating clean though... no workout. Dinner may be something a little more exciting that usual, but that's about it for a *cheat*.
Arose - the amazon thing plagued me for many years. I was always the tallest and biggest (chubbiest) girl in my classes. I would always slouch in pictures because my friends were always smaller and usually petite. I developed quite the insecurity about it. Just add to that too-big boobs and you get one super-shy, self-conscious chickie :( It's only been in the past several years I got over it. Now I welcome the "Amazon" comments :D HOnestly, it was weight-lifting that helped me stand up straighter and pay attention to my posture. If only I was 6' tall - that'd be SO COOL! ;)
Hey Steph - I actually belong to 2 gyms here. I love Gold's - I've been going there for over 10 years. BUT, I work for the YMCA and so that's also an option for me. Both places have kid's gyms or childcare where you drop the kids in and they play while you work out. Golds actually charges extra $5/kid, but my kids love it there. The Y is free and they have a mini rock wall, hoops and all kinds of stuff.
Yesterday we ended up at the Y so I did a nice shoulder workout and then 30 minutes of moderate cardio. I am still sore from my back workout - yeow! The only problem with working out at the Y is that if the staff have questions about something they have no problem interrupting my workout to ask me something. ugh!
At first I was going to say I had gone a bit crazy on my dinner last night, but come to think of it, it wasn't too bad. Except.... for the beer. I had a nice steak, grilled veggies and a little bruschetta. 2 low-carb lemon cookies for dessert too.
Thanks everyone for the bicep compliments! It's really encouraging!

Just checking in!
I always thought I was an amazon...I'm 5'8", which is pretty tall I guess...but it wasn't until I got to college that I realized how midgety that height actually is when you look at most female athletes! I'm a shrimp compared to most serious rowers.
EMBRACE the inner Amazon...be proud of your height and other gifts of genetics...nobody wants to be a cookie-cutter.
later!

Hey there!
Megin, I'm actually about 100 miles north of USC. (Santa Barbara) and I must admit it's my favorite place! ;) (but I'm biased, I was born and raised here) I've actually been to PA once - Pittsburgh on a business trip, but I didn't get to see much of it.
Paichka - love your comment about the cookie cutter. And I know what you mean about the women athletes... sometimes the UCSB women's BB team is hanging out together around town and it's impressive. I feel like a midget!
I didn't work out yesterday - other than yanking our dishwasher out because we just discovered it had been leaking for months! We immediately went out and got a new one and installed it - so I guess it was a "little" workout :)
But I was still sore from Friday's workout - woohoo!
Later today will be chest/tris...

Hi Sb, a tad late but I'm so glad you got over the amazon thing. That plagued me for years...being a 5'8" 8th grader gets a little old sometimes ;) High school got better, sports were huge at my school and it definitely helped that I was tall! Then college was a treat, my best friend was 6'2" and we went partying all the time and people just gave us these crazy looks lol! It was fun most of the time, but still got made fun of. Now I love being tall. (and my husband is 6'3" so that helps :)) Don't wear the cute shoes though---yet! That's my next goal-to find some really cute stilletto heel shoes that are 2 inches or under :) It is nice to feel short once in a while though-like around those bball gals you were talking about. Have a good one!

Checking in...
Yesterday I worked chest and tris. For my job, I was actually spending the day at another location so I managed to workout in the weight room there. And I had it ALL TO MYSELF :D Needless to say I did wish I had a spotter, because it was bench press day, but I think I did okay.
Flat BB Bench - 8 @ 115 , 6 @ 135, 6 @ 135 (much better than my 3 at 135 last week)
Decline DB Press: 3 sets (super slow) of 8 with 35# DB's
Cable x-overs - 3 sets of 8 at 40#
Tricep overhead rope extenstion: 8@70, 8@80, 8@90
Single arm cable press: 8@30, 8@30, 8@30
Then since I was still solo in the weight room I spotted the hanging straps on the cable machine. So... I thought I'd give it a go with some hanging knee raises. It was something I'd like to do more of but geesh! how do you keep from swinging? I finally did a little twisting action to hit my obliques. ;) and then I didn't swing at all.
I finished up with some pushups.
My food ended up being about 1600 calories. Not so good on the protein becaue I left my isopure at work :( and I would have had some at night.
Protein 128
Carbs 145
Fat 52
Fiber 33
This morning I was at the gym at 6am and did 20 minutes of rowing and 20 minutes of jogging/walking/jogging on the treadmill. I am so NOT a runner :p {...someday....}

UGH- I want your bench!
I can only do 130 twice then its all down from there! Alright, tomorrow is bench day for me so I will try to picture the weight as being 'light as a feather'
Nice w/o- Keep it up!

Megin, I'm actually about 100 miles north of USC. (Santa Barbara) and I must admit it's my favorite place! ;) (but I'm biased, I was born and raised here)
AND.... a bench of 130 is not very far off from 135 - Go for it! I must admit, since I had the weight room to myself yesterday I actually grunted a little and it helped :D
Arose - you crack me up... my workout makes YOU feel bad? Man, I don't run around 1/2 as much as you!! You are one busy chickie! :D

Wow! 135 on the bench is my goal...right now I'm at 125 and that's probably cheating a little bit on my form.
My chest is definitely my weakest muscle group...rowers don't NEED strong pecs, that's like the one part of our body that never gets worked! And swimmers? Forget it. :P
You're a strong lady. Great job!

Hey there!
Arose - glad I could inspire you to work out {shucks}.
Sunny, funny that you mention swimmers.. I've been holding back on getting into the pool. I love the water, love to scuba, but geez - it's a far cry from real swimming with real strokes. LOL - I think I view the pool as many women view the "weight room" >>>>>> intimidating.
I took a swim clinic a couple of years ago just for a refresher and the coach looked at me said, "okay - I want to see your favorite stroke... go ahead and make it an even 50 so we can see where you're at."
Me: "what?... fifty what?.... meters?? you mean swim over there... and BACK?!?!... all at once?!?!"
He just smiled and nodded. Ha. We did that for over an hour. Funny thing however, I'll do anything to save face, I'd die before I'd poop out in front of him. Honestly, it was one of the best workouts I'd ever had. Of course I had all these ideas and plans to incorporate swimming into my workouts... never happened. {sigh}
Anyhow, it was legs today! Of course my workouts aren't quite as intense as some of yours, but I think I did a good job of exhausting my quads today. :D
Walking lunges - 5 sets of 24 with 22.5# DBs
Squats - (atg) 3 sets of 10 at 115#
Leg extensions - 8 reps: 70#, 80#, 90#
Calf raises - 240# for all 3 sets of 8.
My quads were so puffy that I couldn't even bend them well for my vertical chair knee raises... had to do them straight-legged. Thank goodness I didn't wear tight pants today  I prolly would bust the seams out...
So I just finished my PWO of Isopure and strawberries - YUM! However, my co-worker brought me in a HYOOGE slice of rum cake... evil woman. I'm going to take it home and stick it in the freezer until my next cheat meal.

Swimming is fabulous...if you want to incorperate it into your workouts, either invest in a waterproof mp3 player or join a master's swim group. Fees are generally minimal and you can go as often or as little as you like. GREAT workouts, group appeal, and coaching. :)
Swimming is one of the greatest workouts you can do...running, swimming and rowing, the holy triumverate of a fantastic physique. Barb would probably add biking in there as well, but "holy tetrumverate" doesn't roll off the tongue as well. :D

Swimming is awesome and "no impact"!! SAVE THE KNEES SPORT! I think there should be a quadathlon!! Swimming, Rowing, Biking, and Running... now there's an idea, can you imagine the muscle transition in that one???
A master swim class is excellent .... what a great opportunity to perfect the stroke and learn new techniques! I really should take a refresher course myself!
I can never understand why NOONE ever utilizes the Concept II Rower but me!! It is such an awesome exercise!! I guess I should be glad the secret isn't out because I NEVER have to share!! :D
Great leg WO!!!!!!!! I think I see a case of DOMS headed your way!!!

Okay - looks like I've got to just get into that pool! Cool thing is that it's brand spankin' new! They do have a masters swim every Sat. morning so maybe that's something I can get into and it's free with my membership. Hmmm.... :)
I can also say that I must have done something a little different yesterday... not sure if it was the lunges or the squats, but my butt is killing me! YEOW! Not just the usual stiffness, but dang... it hurts. Hurts to sit. LOL.... Which means that by tomorrow I'll be walking around like a granny! :p (DOMS always hit me hardest about 48 hours later)
I cleared 1800 calories yesterday... 1850 to be exact. I typically hover around 1700. The breakdown was:
166 protein
150 carbs
64 fat
34 fiber
36% / 33% / 31%
My fat was higher than usual because I had a big ol' piece of baked salmon last night. Yum!
Today I'm kinda messed up because I made a lunch date a couple of weeks ago with my old boss and I totally forgot about it. I have my meals all packed, my workout scheduled for my lunch hour and then I get an email from him. Darn.
I must say I've become pretty anti-social on the lunch hour. I like to stick to my plan and eating at restaurants always throws me off. (grrrr....) But then again, I've already cancelled on him like 3 times, so I can't be rude. I think I'll just take an hour of personal time and get my workout in later in the afternoon - if the boss doesn't mind. ;)
I thought about skipping my workout today (day off), but then I already planned to take tomorrow off (Going to the blood bank on my lunch break and not really supposed to work out afterward). I dont' know why I'm babbling on about this. duh... I'll just workout later after lunch and use my vacation time.
Sometimes I agonize over the silliest things... :p

Maybe we could motivate each other? You already motivated me to do that chest/tri wo the other day! Ah well.. no big.
Megin - I'm joining you in the major DOMS dept... It's killing me, but I love it :D
Arose - I think it's a great idea join up on the BF lowering plan. I still think you'll leave me in the dust, but being challenged is always motivating.
I ended up going out to lunch today and planned on eating something simple. Unfortunately, my chicken came on my plate underneath a mound of pasta and rich creamy sauce. (oink!) I only had a few bites of the pasta and ate all of the chicken. I also had a roll (but it was small) :D Of course my blood glucose meter didn't think it was a good lunch and my reading was way too high. (GRRRRR)
I headed over to the gym and did a good 20 min rowing (27 SR and 2:25.2 500/m split avg... better than my last attempt with 2:33) Then did 10 minutes on the elliptical.
Even with my un-clean lunch (which I guessed at calorie wise) My cals look like they're going to be about 1751 today. I'm sure I over-estimated actually, but better to be on the safe side. :p
Catch ya later..

Hi Sb_Cali,
I was just browsing your journal, because I noticed we are somewhat similar in body make up. I am not as tall as you, only 5'6, but I weigh 160, which makes us pretty proportional to each other. I am on a constant struggle with calories and what to eat. I have a hard time, in my mind getting them up, but have been told to eat 16x body weight to bulk, and 14x bodyweight to cut. I like arose would probably not be cutting. I am about 24% body fat, so I guess I need to lose body fat, before I can consider it cutting.
My question is are you seeing any results on the scale, with the amount of calories you are taking in? I really want to lose some weight. I know I have lost inches and my muscles grow everyday. I lift more almost each week. But I am fixated on the scale. And I think it all boils down to the number of calories eaten. You don't want your body to go into starvation, so not tooo low, but not too much so you don't lose. Such a cunundrum.(spelling??)
So are you going to get your bf tested, and has the scale changed?

Karla (kkapp)
Hi Karla,
Conundrum is the perfect word! :p As far as being fixated on the scale, I can't bear it. I refuse to get on it, even at the Dr.'s office I close my eyes and tell the nurse not to announce my weight. I'm sure they think I'm a bit wacko.
I swear - That scale has created so much negativity in my life. I can be feeling great, have my pants a little lose and then get brave and step on it. It's usually not the number I expected and it sends me into this downward spiral. It's not worth it to me. I guess I'm trying to tell you that I don't know if I've lost weight. :(
I'm feeling pretty good, most days, that I'm making some progress, but I think I have the most stubborn body EVER! :p I'm sure in the future I will get my BF tested. I'll avoid the Tanita however and go for the calipers. They also do hydrostatic testing at the University here.
I've seen the calculations about eating calories based on body weight.. I'm not so sure they work with me. For instance, I'm eating 10-11x my body weight (approx) right now and I'm not seeing any quick losses. I'm not so sure that it's a "one calculation fits all" formula.
Then I've got this stoopid thyroid issue and insulin resistance problem - I'm sure that's not helping me much at all :p (getting older sucks! :D )
Anyhow, for me I'll stick to this for a good 12 weeks minimum and then perhaps evaluate what I'm doing and ask all the smart ladies on this board what I should do if I need to make any changes.
But hey - you say you've lost inches, you're getting stronger! Those are GOOD things and show that your plan is working for you. Cool!

hey Steph... I barely made the 30s - those suckers are heavy :p
I'm still hobbling around like an old lady from my leg WO on Wednesday - my legs hurt EVERYWHERE! woohoo! My hubs had to help me off the couch last night because they were so stiff and sore. cool....
After I flailed about with the hammers this morning I went into:
Yates Rows - 4 sets of 8 @ 90# BB (need to go up to 100#)
Assisted pull ups - 4 sets of 6 with assist, then negatives with little assist.
Rev. grip lat pull downs - 3 sets of 8 @ 70# (too easy - should have gone higher, but my forearms were killing me)
Seated DB Curls - 3 sets of 8 @ 20#, 25#, 25#
One more attempt at hammers - I was done after 2 :D
Meals today look like they'll end up being about 1755...
Protein - 168 g (38%)
Carbs - 155 g (35%)
Fat - 51 g (26%)
Fiber - 26.5 g
Gosh - I can't wait for tomorrow, I get to sleep in until 7:30! :D

Happy Monday!
Boy - the weekend went by WAY too fast! Saturday was just way too busy - and yep, I did sleep in until 7:30 :D Actually if I force myself to sleep any later I end up feeling really sluggish and get a headache.
I didn't work out on Saturday, but ate pretty clean anyway.
Sunday was nice - I had a nice mother's day and my boys were doing all they could to make my day special :) I got lots of nice drawings and tissue paper flowers and lots of hugs. They are so sweet. Of course by the end of the day they were fighting over playing spiderman on the computer, BUT for most of the day they were angels. LOL...
I did sneak in a workout yesterday, shoulders and cardio. I spent 20 minutes on the rowing machine. This time kept my SR at 27 and got my 500m split avg down to 2:18. Then I jumped onto a bike for 10 minutes. It was only 30 min total of cardio, but I was pooped and dripping sweat... whew!
By late last night I ended up feeling like I was coming down with something - stomach-bug, ugh. I was awake half of the night and not feeling too well. I'm playing it by ear today, but my workout today is going to be chest/tri's so I hope the queasy feeling doesn't come back.

Great job on the rower! Those things are tough, I used to do it but after I read Sunny's explanation I didn't want to be one of "those" people using it wrong! Cardio and I haven't been seeing a lot of each other lately anyway, that's about to change this week!
Ew, stomach aches suck. They make you feel so unable to accomplish anything while you have them. Hope you feel better. Do you have any specific goals as far as your training right now or are you just doing it for the fun of it? I know you said bf loss, and I feel your pain about the scale, but I was just wondering if there was a particular bf you wanted to get to or pant size or just plain look like an even hotter hottie too!??!!! lol!

Hey there,
Checking in after my wimpy workout today. I either convinced myself I was feeling weaker or whatever bug I’m fighting is zapping me a bit.. Although I’m sure it’s more mental than anything.
Today was chest/tri’s:
Decline bench - 3 sets / 8 reps : 95#, 115#, 135#
Flat bench – 3 sets / 8 @ 115, 8 @ 115, 6 @ 135# (ugh)
DB flat bench flyes – 3 sets / 8 reps: 25#s, 30#s, 35#s
Overhead tri extension (rope) – 3 sets / 8 reps 80#, 90#, 100#
Cable press down – 3 sets / 8 reps @100#
Pushups (on shaky arms) a whopping 17 … LOL… If that’s the challenge this week I’ll have to do those again, but stick them at the beginning of my workout. Yikes!
Megin - thanks! I do feel a little better - haven't had to make a dash for a trash bucket yet :p
Hey Arose, about my goals. I actually haven’t re-read my journal, but you mentioned something about my going for consistency. I really had been flopping around for several years with no change. I know that instead of just plucking some number out of the air and saying it’s my “goal weight”. I knew it would have to be much more detailed than that. No matter what my ultimate destination is, I know I won’t get anywhere if I keep allowing myself to be distracted, or jumping around on different workout programs. I tried Body for Life, BodyRx, and several plans I made up as I went along. LOL
For now… I think I’ve gotten back on track with consistent workouts. I know how to juggle my schedule to get them in so I’m feeling pretty good about that. My husband works shift work so between him and the boys school schedules and my work, I don’t get that morning workout in every day. But HECK! You’re all over the place too, so you can relate. (Actually you’re prolly twice as busy! )
My ultimate goal is to see my abs – seriously… if only for a fleeting moment. I can feel them in there… if I do crunches on the floor I feel those little guys under there, rock hard. Unfortunately, they’re being suffocated by about 2 inches of pudge. :D
This is what I my short-term goals are:
Get to 22% BF – I’m guessing I’m at 27% :(
Run 2 miles without stopping
Swim 500 meters
Do an overhand pull-up
And not look “40” come July :p
I’ve been back on track since I started my journal… about 7 weeks? But I’m not so sure I see any progress at all with my BF dropping. I’ve been averaging about 1700 calories. I’m not sure if I should change anything or keep this going for a few more weeks. Obviously, something’s gotta give.. right?
Anyhoo – let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas. I’m leaning towards continuing along for another 5 weeks or so and re-evaluate things then.

I think you should stay on it for 5 more weeks and make sure to take some measurements and a couple pics and *maybe* weigh yourself...not necessary though if it causes severe mental anguish!
Oh, and that is NOT a wimpy WO. It is IMPRESSIVE!! I did chest/tris today too and wouldn't even do one rep with ANY of the weights you are doing!! ha! Great job, give yourself some credit for an awesome WO with killer weights!
Your goals look wonderful. Good luck, have you tried to run/swim/do an overhand pull up lately? You're awesome, keep up the good work :)

Hey,
Skipped a day yesterday :( on the workout AND the journal. Geez - just after I posted how I was being more consistent.
It was just one of those days where I was feeling more guilty about leaving my job for an extra hour. I helped out with my little boy's kindergarten class yesterday morning, came to work late, then split again at 3 to pick up my other son for piano lessons.... I was kinda in and out all day long. Didn't want to push my luck squeezing my workout in - But, once I did get home I went and kicked the soccer ball around with my boys, so that kept me moving too.
Up this morning at 5:30 to get my cardio in - 35 min on the EFX and 10 min on the rowing machine. Unfortunately, my ipod battery lost its charge in the first 5 minutes of my workout. :( hate it when that happens. I love having my tunes!
I'm going to hit the gym again later today for legs :D Walking lunges and squats - oh yeah!
I'm wondering if I should bump my cals up to about 1900 for today... any ideas?
arose - I do think I'll keep doing what I'm doing for the next 5 weeks. I'll think about taking pics..... (blech) but I doubt I'll venture near the evil-moster-scale.

Yea, my tunes failed me yesterday and I just left the gym...I refuse to workout without any music- its just not gonna happen! But kudos for you for finishing your cardio! Don't know how you did it- I need that bounce from the music to keep me up.
MMM, leg day....I hope you get some good lunges in today (MY FAV!!!) - yea, def. up the cals up to 1900 because you are gonna need it for leg day. It will also help w/ the DOMS even though I know you secretly love DOMS> lol.
I also stay away from the scale. It completely hinders my progress when I look at the numbers. Plus, in all reality, numbers don't mean much- its all in how YOU feel. Thats why we do this in the first place

Hey! I decided to post this in your journal instead of mine, as I am sure you'll read your journal first.
Are you having a hard time searching for something to do with your body? I know that I will compete one day, that's not even a question in my mind. I, too, get the athlete questions. When I tell them that I don't play sports, they ALWAYS ask why I train so hard. There's really no answer, other than that I love it. It's quite a struggle finding something that you do well. I love to cook, but I live alone and I have no one to feed! :)
We only have indoor walls in Houston as far as I know, so I will start there. Unfortunately, the fees go up on the weekend. I do have Friday off, so I may go climbing on Thursday night. Once I get good enough, I'll try the real deal. Would you ever do that? Surfing lessons sound FUN! The benefits of living in California. You don't need another child, do you? :D

You don't need another child, do you? :D
Of course I do!!! :D Especially one that cooks really well! :p
I think you should give the rock wall a try. I should have know I'd love it because I loved to climb trees when I was a kid. LOL Actually, given the chance (with no one looking) I'd probably climb a tree today... :D
Thanks for popping in! I love reading your journal - you've got a lot of energy and you always seem so positive! It's inspiring!

Just finished up my leg workout! (and my strawberry PWO - yum!)
I had a wonderful 5 sets of walking lunges. (24 lunges/set) Used 25# DBs. I'm happy because usually on the 4th & 5th sets I'm pausing between steps so I can catch my breath (and not fall over). I didn't have to do that today at all!
I followed it up with 4 sets of squats (8 reps) and I upped the weight I was using from 115 to 135...and went deep. It was torture - but felt great. :D
Leg extensions - 3 sets of 8 @ 90#, 100#, 100#
Calf Raises - 3 sets of 12 @120#, then finished off with partials until my calves burned.
I've left hammies off of this workout and will put them either with shoulders or stick them on back day. I haven't quite figured that one out yet.
I also think I could have added some sumo squats in there too. Maybe next Wednesday.
Hey Megin, I'm just glad I got my ipod charged back up - after it pooped out on my at cardio this morning. It sucked working out to the "Golds Gym Network" - blah -
Hi Steph - Yep the soccer with the kids is fun - honestly, I don't really know the first thing about soccer other than I love to run around and kick the ball. I'm basically a big ol' "wanna-be" athlete. LOL. You name it, tennis, soccer, bball, volleyball, football - I LOVE playing all those sports - I just don't think I'm particularly good at any of them :D (Oh and softball, but I throw like a girl and I HATE that :p - I can throw the heck out of a football though!)

um, did I see that right? 5 sets of 24 lunges??? Are you insane??!!! I am sooooooooo completely impressed! And then 4 sets of squats? what?! I did legs yesterday too but not even half as much as you did! Wow, a new goal for me!!! DO MORE ON LEG DAY! Geesh, I'm tired and sore for ya;)

Arose - you're too funny.... you see I thought my leg workout was kinda short :D Heck - I look at Megin's and I feel like mine is missing about 20 exercises... LOL
Oh and the sets of 24 are 12 lunges on each leg... it's just that I'm doing walking lunges so I just cound 24 steps=24 lunges. It's so crazy doing those lunges - the first 18 of each set I feel great about, it's those last 6 that I'm feeling wobbly and my legs are burning, my vision is jumping around and I'm breathing hard. Then I have to drop those dumbbells and almost lay down for a couple of minutes. I'm sure people who haven't done lunges think it doesn't "look like much", but it's intense!
I stayed on my nutrition yesterday and I feel really good about it! Today is cardio day and I haven't quite decided what to do yet. HIIT or regular.. hmm... Although my little boy was a little sick yesterday, but he seemed a little better and I took him to school this morning. So there's a chance he may get worse and then I'll have to go get him early. If I end up being home with him I'll probably just jumprope and do abs for my cardio.
later!.... :D

Gosh - I'm not sure what's going on, but I gotta say, this week I've been feeling like a whale. I keep catching a side-view of myself and not liking it at all. I just don't get it! How can I make this change from:
Casual workouts and half-a$$ed eating
to:
Consistent workouts and clean eating and not see any changes? ugh! or maybe I should say OINK. (grrrr)
I got home from work yesterday (early) because my 6 year old wasn't feeling great. I spent the afternoon trying to put our home in order, laundry, dishes, etc.... and it was blazing hot as well! I checked out the front yard and when I came back in, I grabbed a nice cold beer from the fridge and figured "what the heck". I took one swallow - felt guilty and quickly handed it to my hubs when he walked through the door. (thank goodness)
I'm just not feeling it this week. The doubts are starting to sneak in:
"why are you doing this?
“Obviously this isn’t working for you – you must be eating too much”
Honestly – yesterday was cardio and the day after leg day. I thought I would up my calories to 1900, but then I started thinking that is TOO much and maybe I just should skip my last meal. I did end up having ½ cup cottage cheese and that brought my cals back down to 1750, but I’m still feeling quite tubby today.
I know I just need to keep on… chin up and all that, but sometimes it’s just a little depressing. Shoot, and I thought the scale was evil… the scale has nothing on the stoopid mirror this week.. that’s for sure :p
Okay – onward and upward… (or as my husband would say: Suck it up! :p )today is back and bi day. My eats are clean and it’s a beautiful day… and it’s Friday. :D There!
Oh and Steph! Thanks for asking, my munchkin is MUCH better :)

Hi!!! Sorry you are having a bad day...keep your head up though, you can do this! Its tough when you have these days, but you are not eating to much, I promise!!! You work out so hard and push so much weight around, I can't even imagine you are anything close to a "whale". Your body is so healthy now that you are eating clean and working out. Sometimes you don't see all of the improvements directly on your body but they are slowly happening.
You have reached one of your goals of being consistent! That's awesome, focus on that!
When you wrote that your hubby was saying "suck it up" and that made me shudder!!! My husband thinks about saying that once in a while, I see it in his eyes, but he knows he'll get a punch in the arm if he does! I don't want to suck it up, I want to complain to you about it!!LOL! Keep it up, you are doing wonderfully, tomorrow is a new day. Enjoy your weekend!!

Hope the 6 yo is feeling better!

Hey arose, Megin, WB and Steph - Thanks for your encouragement.. I really appreciate it!! :o I think I'm done whining for today :p
Okay - on to the workout. It was back and bis, OH and the push-up challenge. LOL.. guess I should have put the push-ups at the beginning of my workout. I got 24.
Yates Rows: 4 sets of 8 - 90#, 100#, 115#, 135# (whee!)
Lat Pull down: 3 sets of 8 - all 70#
Assisted pull-ups... slow on the negative - 3 sets of 4 (yep - only 4)
Standing BB Curls - 3 sets of 8 - 40#, 50#, 60# (only 6 @60#)
Then I tried the Zottman curls, but wasn't feeling it - I didn't want to be doing them wrong so I just did DB Curls using the 15# & 20# - (not alternating)
I did some ab work and then then pushups... :D
Food today looks like it'll hit about 1700 calories.
178 g. protein (42%)
145 g. carb (34%)
44 g. fat (24%)
31 g. fiber
I might add a little more carb into my dinner... yah?
I hope everyone has/had a great Friday! "See ya" tomorrow :D

Yeah.... I saw those squat numbers too! You keep raising the bar and squatting more and more is making me work harder. But of course, that's a GOOD thing :D
I actually had a great weekend. It was beautiful weather - in the 80's. I love those warm nights when you can smell the beach in the air.
First off, got to report that I didn't work out at all this weekend. Well, not in the conventional sense. I did so much work around the house, from putting up a backyard fence to painting and trimming trees. (I love doing that kind of stuff). But for fun on Sat afternoon, we took our boat and headed up to a local lake. We have an old vintage Glastron boat - (1967 and avocado green! love it!) It was fun just cruising around the lake, had a little picnic and the boys loved it. Although I'm sure it was easily in the 90's up there. Whew!
So today I got myself back on track and just finished working out. It was chest and tri day. I wasn't too pleased with my bench #s, but I finally moved past *starting* with the 35# plates on the bar. Honestly, I had his horrible habit of eyeing the 45's and getting intimidated by them. I usually use the 35's and then stack 10's on top of those. :p I finally decided to start with the 45's. I'm not sure why, but I had a hard time getting in a full 8 reps on my first set.
Bench Press - 6@135, 4@135, 3@135  (I wish I had a spotter at this point :( ) Weight room was empty and I didn't want to get trapped under the bar. Now *that* would leave a mark. LOL
DB Incline Press: 8 reps @ 35#, 40#, 45#
DB Incline Flyes: 8 repts @ 25#, 30#, 35#
I need to go up on my weights for those, but with the incline press I have that problem of getting the heavier weights into place. Not so much a problem on the flat bench, however.
Triceps:
Overhead rope extension - 8 reps @ 90#, 100#, 110#, 120#
Rope press down - 8 super slow reps @ 50#
Followed up by 3 sets of pushups. I kept moving my hands in closer with each subsequent set, it was hard! I could only do about 4 on my 3rd set with a narrow stance (?).
Tomorrow morning is shoulders and abs and then... I'm going to my first spinning class at 12:30. Woohoo!!

Tuesday - and I just missed my first spin class <grrrrr>
Nothing like a little power outage to throw a wrench into my plans... :( The power came back on in time for the spin class - my problem was that I had to babysit our main computer to make sure it came back up okay. Which it didn't. Needless to say I didn't get to go spinning.
I did get up this morning however and went to the gym for shoulders and abs. So today wasn't a complete loss.. I may squeeze in some regular cardio once my computer issue gets resolved.
Shoulder workout was:
Seated Press (nautilus machine): 3 sets of 8 @ 80#, 90# 110#
Side DB lat raises: 3 sets of 8 @ 10#, 15#, 15#
Reverse pec dec: 3 sets of 8 @ 40#, 50#, 50#
Front BB raises: 3 sets of 8 (super-slow) all at 20#
Various forms of crunches, vertical chair knee raises, weighted ab machines.
It was a short workout, but my shoulders felt pretty worked when I left. We'll see. I rarely get sore shoulders... darn. :p
Food today looks on the low side - I'll post totals later....

Barbell rollouts... the bear.... bulgarian squats... flags
You all keep me on my toes! :D
I swear, I've learned more in 2 months here on this board than in 5 years of being a regular at the gym. :o I've alway stuck to the same old exercises. The basics. I thought SLDL's were rather exotic. LOL! The most unusual exercise I had ever done were Arnolds... ah well. This is all so much more fun!
Today is leg day - I'm thinking of starting with the bear in place of my regular squats and then doing walking lunges or maybe even trying the bulgarian squats. I'm just not sure how to put it all together.
I just ate my 2nd meal and so I'll head over to the weight room in about 90 minutes.
I haven't posted meals in a while so here's what I'm eating today:
#1 - LF Cottage Cheese/ Oats / Cinnamon & Flax
#2 - Tuna, garbanzo beans, jicama, cucumber, scallions under a balsamic (fat-free_ dressing) & 1 teaspoon PB
#3 - PWO Shake - got a new whey flavor: Banana Scream. I love banana flavored stuff. (especially Laffy Taffy :p - although it's been about 5 years since I've tasted it). I'll add some oats to that shake. I've found that banana is not good at all. My blood sugar comes back way too high <grump>
#4 - 6 egg whites + 1 yolk (scrambled), low-carb tortilla
#5 - Protein shake with broccoli on the side.
This should come to 1741 calories.
189 g. protein
148 g. carbs
42 g. fat
32 g. fiber
Yesterday's food was 1735 calories.
This is interesting - I took Sunny's formula for estimating calories (on another thread) and this is what I came out with: IF (big IF) I weigh about 175 and am about 28% BF, that puts me at 126 lbs of lean mass. 126 * 14 = 1764. Now, most days I'm about 1650 - 1750. What'cha think?

Leg workout... I had so much fun with it today!! Although the only problem with working out with new exercises is finding the correct weight to use.
This is how it went:
The Bear - first off all I can think of is that Sat. Night Live skit where they sit around and talk about "The Bears" - am I dating myself? LOL :p
Anyway - I started out with the bar just to get a feel for it.
6 reps bar only
6 reps 65#
6 reps 65#
Personally I loved the feeling of the push-press. My wrists were not diggin the front squat - my elbows don't stick out like they do in the pics I saw online - not sure what I was doing wrong. Then of course there was the 2 times I bonked myself in the head on the way up from the reg. squat. LOL (duh). I didn't feel it as much in my legs as I thought I would, but DANG! IT was like doing cardio - I was huffing and puffing :D
Bulgarian Squats - Loved these! I did 3 sets of 8 on each leg. Started with no weight once again. Then went to the 20# DBs, 25#s and finished with 30# DBs.
Sumo Squats - I wasn't sure if I should use a DB or Bar. I opted for the bar. 3 sets of 8 @ 95#, 115#, 115#
Angled Leg Press - 4 sets of 8 @ 270#, 260#, 360#, 450#
Seated Leg Extensions - 3 sets of 8 @ 90#, 100#, 100#
Angled Calf Raise - 3 sets of 8 @ 210#, 230#, 250#
Then since no one was in the back corner of the weight room I tried a couple of the barbell rollouts. I was just playing, but I think I'd like to try these when I don't have sweat pouring into my eyeballs. :D
I stretched and did a few dips on the way out.
What fun!
I'm going to go make my PWO now... YUM. And hubby just called, what a sweetie - he went to Costco and got me 6 packs of raspberries! Love raspberries - high in fiber too! ;)

Great workout, as usual! :D
Looks like the Bear did it's job! I did it today, too. You killed it with 65#!!! Great going on that one! I don't think it's important that your elbows stick out quite that far. You should definitely feel it in your shoulders, forearms, and biceps. Because of the weight that you are using, you won't feel it in your legs quite so much...especially considering the amount of weight that you squat!
Megin

wow- now if that doesn't give you some DOMS, I don't know what will!
Sorry I did not get back to you fast enough on the weight for the Bears, but I would have told you to do exactly what you did- the bar to get used to it, then stack a few b/c you can def. do more than the bar easy!!

Reporting in with that wonderful feeling of DOMS :D Yet I know that it's always worse for me on the 2nd day so tomorrow should be fun! woohoo :p
I haven't got a workout in yet and I'm not quite sure how this is gonna work. It may just be jumping rope in the driveway tonight. I had 2 appts today that kept me away from work for about 3 hours and I wasn't sure about attempting to squeeze a workout in there.
My meals look like about 1600 so far today, I have this feeling that hubs is going to want to go out do dinner at our fave Mexican food place. It's always a challenge to resists the chips & salsa...... BUT I have my jicama, so I should be okay :D
Have a good one!

Enjoy the Mexican food! And the jicama! You don't need the chips and salsa, especially if you've got good Mexican food coming. ;)

Happy Friday! :D Thanks for all the encouragement too! Okay - this is kinda funny - hopefully not in a weird way - but sometimes I'm working out and I feel like wimping out on the last set and then I'll think of how enthusiastic you all are and it keeps me pushing on. Is that totally sappy or what? I just wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate the journal postings, suggestions and feedback. :o Especially since I don't have any workout buddies.
So - I got home from work last night and the good news is that hubs did not want to go to Mexican food.
Bad news is that the kids and him wanted to order in pizza... So they got pizza and I just had some cottage cheese & some protein powder mixed in and some raspberries! I will confess I had a couple of bites of pizza :( Just to *confirm* that it didn't taste good. :p
It's super hot here today... supposed to be even hotter this weekend. Tomorrow's plan is to get up early, hit the gym for cardio, take the boys to the zoo and then hopefully go swimming.
I did back and bi's today:
Lat Pull Down - 3 sets of 8 @ 75#, 90#, 105#
Yates Rows - 3 sets of 8 @ 115#
Seated Cable Row - 3 sets of 8 @ 75#, 90#, 90#
Assisted pullups - 3 sets of 6 (65#s assist) + some negatives
Incline DB Curls - 3 sets of 8 @20#
BB 21's - 2 sets @ 30#
hammers - 2 sets of 8 @ 20#, 25#
At this point I had major balloon arms... LOL I could barely scratch my nose. :D
I better get to drinking my water - I've been slacking today.
Enjoy your weekends!!

And I knew you'd love the Bear. ;) 65 pounds though? Yeesh, I'd better get my tail in gear if I expect to catch you! I've only been doing 45 in my circuit. It's the second to last exercise I do on Fridays, so I'm always about ready to drop the bar on my head.
Holy moly you're doing SO GOOD!!!

Yea, I have thought of you guys as well- all these cyber friends can really keep you on track!! Great fun.
Wow, I don't know if I could have a FEW bites of pizza. I think I would eat the whole box if I had one bite- so I am trying the path of no cheats at all. Seems to be working, but the blasted Natty PB keeps calling my name!
Great w/o today!! So proud that you are making time to put yourself first. I know you are a busy woman, so that is very admirable.

Hey there! Saturday afternoon here :)
First off... those doing the bear do you move your hands at all? The example I saw had the guy changing his grip once he got the barbell across his traps for the squat - he made it wider. Just curious if anyone does that. Thanks!
Okay - and as far as resisiting the pizza, it's was chain-food-pizza.. you could just see the grease in little puddles in the middle of the pepperoni - it wasn't very appealing at all. :p (I'm really not *that* good at resisting temptation - but the grease puddles were the perfect gross-out)
So far the day has gone as planned! Great workout - 45 min of moderate cardio. Got some new tunes on the ipod - makes working out so easy! :D
Then we hit the zoo. Cruised by the beach to look at all the tourists. Two big things going on down there today: outrigging/rowing exhibition - TONS of outriggers in the ocean, so pretty! (looks like so much fun!) AND an AVP Tourney, I'd love to watch but don't think my kids would sit for that long watching the games. I could EASILY sit there and watch - nothing hard about looking at perfectly tanned guys with incredible physiques smashing a volleyball around. :D (sorry hubs- LOL)
Anyway - I was feeling pretty good today and decided to take a pic of my leg(s) - trying to flex. So here it is. Of course once I took a good look I realized how dirty the mirror was. LOL. I wish I could get a pic while I was doing squats - that's when I see the most definition. But I don't want the rep of the weird woman in the gym with the camera :p
Enjoy your Saturday!

Look at those legs! Appearantly, I need to squat more! Nice wheels!
I do move my hands on the bear because doing squats with hands that close is just uncomfortable. I do it without realizing it. Do you keep the same hand placement? If so, does it feel uncomfortable?

Um, squatting you see MORE definition? Damn Sb, your legs are incredibly hot! My favorite muscle is that one by the knee and I am desperately trying to make it come out and play! Do you wear shorts and skirts ALL the time...you should! And you should wear tanks all the time too to show off your arms...geesh, if I were you I'd be in some skimpy wears right about now. Seriously your legs have an awesome shape. With all these pics around of you great gals it is so motivational. Thanks for sharing :)

I just checked out the challenge thread and those burpees look quite interesting. Am I the only one who's never heard of those before?
I'll definitely need to go through a few practise runs with those... LOL..
Thanks for the quad feedback, I love working legs! yet I'm not brave enough for the 20 rep squat yet :p
Yesterday's workout was chest & tri. Food was clean too!
Today: cardio - more jumprope in the driveway and maybe try some of those burpees! Tomorrow morning will be shoulders and abs and THEN finally I'll get to go to my spin class on my lunch break. WHEE! Can't wait!
I'm going to check out the recipes now and see if I can find that tuna/black bean combo :) yum!

It's official... our June gloom is here :( and it's only May. What's June Gloom? ugh... it's this hideous marine layer that comes onshore and socks in the town in this yuck/gray cloud cover. It usually clears up around 3pm, but man... without the sunshine it sure is depressing. Hard to believe summer is just around the corner when it's like this.
Anyway - it kinda puts me in a funk. That and I had xrays taken of my lower spine yesterday and the Dr. hasn't called me back yet. I've had this *thing* where I get this pinchy feeling in my lower back and then this sciatic pain hitting me in the arse and down my legs. So far it hadn't been painful enough to whine about it, but recently it's passing *uncomfortable* and getting into the hurting stage. Good thing is that at least it's probably not a muscular issue and so I'm still free to work out! :D
Having said that I'm off to get my cardio in - no spinning class today :( I'll probably climb on the elliptical and do some interval training on that.
Meals yesterday and today are rather uneventful... :p Although I did battle with a luscious looking apple fritter on Sunday. I had gotten up to go work out and hubs had gone to the donut store.. what's up with that ?!?!?! I told him if he loved me he would NOT have gotten me an apple fritter (my fave). I lifted the lid of that pink box and there it sat. I managed to avoid it all day and finally about 9pm it started calling my name. I got up took a bite - yep, still tasted like an apple fritter... gave a few bites to my doggie and put the rest down the garbage disposal. LOL... I had to act quick though... Did I mention that I love apple fritters? :D
Okay - I'm leaving for my cardio... see now that I've posted it, I have to DO IT! (that's why I love my journal ;) )

Yuck to the whole Dr. thing. I hope that works out.
Also, I wouldn't worry about the June Gloom yet, it may have just been a gray day- could be better tomorrow b/c it is still like 6 days from June!!!!

sb_cali
05-25-2005, 04:06 PM
Hey P: No burpees for me just yet.... :o
Last night I asked my husband if he knew what burpees were... he looked at me as if I had a third eyeball... "You don't know what a burpee is?!?!!?"
Well, not until a few days ago I told him. Geesh - guess I'm a little out of it. He said he used to do them all the time. (Although he chickened out when I asked him to demonstrate... :p )
Today was leg day and it was so much fun!!! I always liked leg day, but it's so much more liberating and challenging trying different exercises!
(Even though today's workout was almost the same as last Wednesday - they're still new to me) :)
the bear - 3 sets of 6 @65#
DB bulgarian squats - 4 sets of 8 @ 20#,20#,25#,30# (increase from last week)
BB Sumo squats - 3 sets of 8 @ 115#, 115#, 135#
Leg press - 3 sets of 8 @ 360# (decrease from last week - went lower and slower)
BB SLDL - 3 sets of 8 @ 95#, 95#, 115#
Calf raises - 3 sets of 12 @ 220
Finished up with some dips and... barbell rollouts :D Now THAT got me some funny looks.... I don't think I rolled out far enough, but I was afraid I wouldn't get back to my starting position. What fun though!
Meals yesterday still hovered around 1750 calories.
Today it's a little low and it was leg day so I'm not sure what to do... I've only had 1050 calories today and it's 4pm. (just finished my PWO) I'll eat at 6:30 and again at 9:30.. I guess I'll figure something out - I do know we're having steak for dinner though... YUM!!!

Happy Thursday!
I'm officially sore! super-sore to be exact! (hey powells, except for my lower abs... hmmm.. how many do you normally do?)
Steph - thanks! I get inspired by everyone elses workout here - otherwise my numbers would probably be a lot lower.
Arose - yeah, my hubs cracks me up. LOL. He'll say something like, "I bet you can't do 10 pushups.." HA! He knows I'll do anything to save face. Of course if I challenge him he'll have an excuse..."oh - I've got that plate in my wrist - can't move it"... "oh... I've got that plate in my neck... better not hurt myself" :p It just cracks me up. He really does have metal in there too.
Megs - maybe at school I was excused from burpees cuz I was a CHUB - or maybe I've just blocked them from my memory! LOL!
I added up my cals for yesterday and they came to 2000! whee! I was really surprised. Good for a leg day, yah?
I'm slacking on my H2O so I'm gonna go chug some now... check ya later!

I think the bb rollout and abs doms thing really comes into play when you roll it out far enough! I went a little overboard on my extensions the first time and I had a nasty case of abs doms. The lower abs really seem to come into play when it is time to roll the mother back!! LOL
sb_cali
05-27-2005, 10:10 PM
Okay - it's official - I must not have rolled out far enough on my rollouts :( no sore abs. I'm going to try it again tomorrow!
Confession time: I didn't workout yesterday OR TODAY!!! I really have no excuse, just a crazy schedule with several unplanned things popping up. It seemed like every minute of my day was crammed with these "things" - it was really frustrating.
However - my meals stayed clean, although I probably eased up on the cals a bit simply because I wasn't working out.
Tomorrow I'll be back on track for sure! Up early and heading to the gym at 9am. Not sure if I should play catch up on my cardio AND weights in the same workout or not.
I need to do back and bi's AND cardio, then Sunday will be shoulders/abs & cardio. Then it's off to the lake for a fun Memorial day! :D
Not much else going on today - I'm working late tonight....thrilling :p Although it is a little creepy being here alone at night...
Hope everyone has a faboo weekend!!
Peace :D

Saturday's workout: I opted for shoulders and bis today. I had exactly one hour in the gym because the kids center closed at 11 and I got there exactly at 10am..
Shoulders:
DB Military Press 3 sets of 8 @ 25#, 30#, 35#
DB Lat Raises: 3 sets of 8 @ 15#
Front BB Raise: 3 sets of 8 @ 20# (super slow - great burn!)
Rev. Pec Dec flyes: 3 sets of 8 @ 50#, 50#, 60#
BB Curls: 3 sets of 8 @ 40#, 50#, 60#
Hammers: 3 sets of 8 @ 15#, 20#, 25#
I spent the last 15 minutes on the rowing machine. Not too wild, 2:21 avg 500/m split. But I did work up a good sweat!
Once again, it's a gloomy day here :( I want sunshine!!! :p
I'm headed out to kick the soccer ball around with my 6-year old... :D He's so much fun!!

Oh my - go out of town for a couple of days and I can't imagine getting caught up with everyone's journal! There are hundreds of posts... LOL.
I'm going to try to jump in and catch up, but thought I'd better get my own journal done so I don't slack off. :D
Sunday I got up early and got some good cardio in at the gym. I had wedding to go to at noon and was afraid if I didn't go then, I'd never make it.
This wedding was something I'd been looking forward to for quite a while. I was initially just happy to be able to fit into my outfit easily! What a relief!
After the wedding we grabbed the kiddos and went out of town to BBQ with some friends - stayed the night and scooted off to the lake the next morning. We boated and swam all day yesterday - it was GORGEOUS!! BUT food was lacking and other than playing in the water, we sat around in the sun - nothing "cardio" about that.... :D Didn't get home until late last night, a little sunburned and a little drained.
My meals are back to the regular stuff and I'm planning on hitting chest and tris today.
This is the deep thought section I'm also feeling a little off today.... I think I'm just being sentimental about the wedding I went to on Saturday - It just got me thinking... Have you ever been around someone who just inspires you? Makes you feel like you need to be doing something out there? My friend is the anti-couch potato... always energetic and lively... In contrast it was making me feel like I'm a little "too comfortable" .... not challenging myself enough. I know I'm just rambling here. I typically stay in my comfort zone and only venture out once in a while. Yet I LOVE how I feel when I do step out and do something outside the zone. I loved climbing that rock wall and finding out that I really enjoyed it, even though it may sound like a pretty simple thing to some.
I started thinking of all those: "Wouldn't it be fun to...." phrases that run through my head:
... learn how to surf
... get a new bike and start biking to work in the summer
... go rock wall climbing again
... do the sprint-tri
... volunteer for something meaningful
... get out there and try outrigging
Seeing my friend had all of these thoughts just careening through my head - although it also sometimes happens when someone asks: "So what'cha been up to?" and I end up saying something about: The kids, my hubs, work and the gym... hmmm... surely there must be something else, but nope. Oh... I must get out there and kick it up a notch.
hmmm... am I babbling? prolly, huh? :p
Anyway - as far as the bike however... my hubs said that if I find one I like he'll buy it for me as an early b-day present! whee!!!! ;)
So - those are my rambling thoughts for the day....
I'll check in later with my workout #s and meals...
peace :D

Sb, I completely understand what you mean by doing something meaningful with your life. I am the same way, I feel as if I'm too busy to do anything else right now but I would like to do more. More fun things, more things to tell stories about to my kids and grandkids (when either of those come, I don't know!). It depends on the type of person you are though too. If you are totally content and happy with being an awesome mom and wife then you can be fulfilled. If you crave more adventurous things I think that you did that yesterday with the boat...that would've been considered adventurous in my book! Your whole weekend was full of fullfiling experiences and fun! If you need more then do it! You only have one life and you might as well be completely exhausted all the time from doing fun stuff rather than just thinking about it :)
Also, taking care of yourself by eating healthfully and exercising is HUGE! how many other people do you know personally that work as hard as you do?? And they are probably thinking, "I don't challenge myself like Sb, I should really push myself harder."
Do your kids want to learn to surf? It could be a family thing...personally I LOVE it but it does take some time and effort to get in to. You are already a super mom, busy working woman, good wife, and you'd kill anyone in the gym with your bench....you do so much already! Kudos to you though for wanting to do more and if you do I hope you keep us updated about your adventures!!! HAVE FUN!
Alright, and that was me babbling....:D

What do you mean you have a lot of catching up to do??? Or you implying that we type a lot???????????:D
sb_cali
06-01-2005, 09:30 AM
Still trying to catch up with everyone's journal....
and yes P! You all type a lot!!! :p
I'm still trying to remove myself from yesterday's introspective state. I know it's good to evaluate and contemplate one's directions, goals, etc... It just throws me out of my groove. Not sure if that makes sense, but it just mellowed me out a bit too much and my energy level dropped.
I had a half-a$$ed workout yesterday and all I could do was to push through it. I did chest, tri's and back and I'm not even going to list my weights. :(
Food was "okay" - I wasn't really hungry at dinner and only ate one small piece of chicken breast (maybe 3 oz). However about 10pm I was really hungry and grabbed a low-carb tortilla and PB. It was probably a good 3TB too!
I am planning on legs today and already I feel a bit more "up" today, thank goodness!!
I'm going to go check out some bikes next door later too!!! (before the leg workout ;) )

Do your kids want to learn to surf? It could be a family thing...personally I LOVE it but it does take some time and effort to get in to.
Ya know... I don't think my boys have that much interest in surfing quite yet. They love the beach, but the bigger waves still freak them out a little bit.
How long have you been surfing? What's the biggest surf you've ever been in? (although.. I think the 4'-5' waves would be just perfect for now :D )
Have you seen the Mavericks Big Wave surfing pics? Holy cow - those guys are CRAZY!

Hmmmm, I haven't been surfing enough to call myself a "surfer" but I've done it while I've been here in Florida and a couple times in Hawaii!!! The biggest surf I was in I didn't even have a board! It was seriously 7-8 ft!! (Big for me). The biggest with a board would be about 4-5 (which is big enough for me too :p). Florida has TERRIBLE rip currents and last year we couldn't really get out much because of the hurricanes...and I'm not one for cold ocean water ;)
Some of those guys are cahrazy! During the hurricanes you should have seen these insane people...I saw someone jump off the end of a pier because they couldn't swim out into the waves they were so big! It was nuts! I would LOVE to go to Hawaii in December when the big waves hit the North Shore....that would be my heaven....not to surf, just to watch!!!

Arose,
North Shore Hawaii!! It's AWESOME! A few years ago in January I went to a Billabong surfing contest. It was huge - ESPN covered it. Now while it was totally wicked (my kid's favorite phrase these days) what surprised me was that the waves were WAY THE HECK out there! I mean like 200 yds... The surfers were like a speck on the waves - which were monstrous. Scary.
I highly recommend checking it out though... I'd love to go back and stay on the north shore again. Besides Dec/Jan rates are really low too! (love a good deal!)
Is your hubs as sporty as you?

Yea, did you see those guys trying to catch a few waves when the rest of us were stuck under some sort of mandatory curfew?!?!
Those hurricanes were nuts over on the east cost of FL!!!
SB, I totally think you should head up surfing...how much fun would that be!!!!
Totally jealious over here!! I wanna surf now (well, not really over here in fl) but you got the whole californication thing goin´for ya. It would be a waste not to jump on that opportunity...bring the kids and hubby!!!

Checking in post-workout. It was such a good workout - even though I kept catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror and realized that I am having a seriously bad hair day :D
The lifts today went like this:
Squats
8 @ 135
8 @ 185
4 @ 205 :p
6 @ 185 (had to take it back down after wimping out on the 205) poop!
DB Bulgarian Squats
8 with 20# DB's
8 with 25# DB's
8 with 30# DB's
Barbell SLDL
8 @ 115
8 @ 135
8 @ 135
Angled Leg Press
8 @ 360
8 @ 450
8 @ 540
4 @ 540 (super slow)
Leg Extensions
8 @ 90
8 @ 100
8 @ 110
Angled Calf Raises
3 sets of 8 @ 220
Finished off with hanging knee raises (on the vertical chair) and barbell rollouts. I'm wondering if the barbell rollouts are not as difficult because the flooring in the gym is somewhat like linoleum... with a little cushion to it. I had the barbell weight at 135# and made sure I rolled all the way out to a plank position and then used my lower abs to pike back up to my starting position. Is this right?
I just finished my PWO which was just protein powder and handful of grapes.
Cals today look a bit on the low side (1600) so I'll try to figure out how to bump that up again. (without resorting to PB - YUM!!!) :D
Megs: Yep - I'm checking out the one day surfing lessons for starters to see what's out there. I have a friend that said she'd like to try it too, so we may give it a shot... I'm sure we will be comic relief for all beach-goers that day. LOL.... (heckle & jeckle tackle the surf... :p)

Nice workout, sb_cali!!!! Why did you chicken out on the 205? Hell...you did it in the first place! :D You should be SO proud of that! And BB rollouts are not tough to you? You're a machine... :p
I know how you feel about the PB...YUM YUM! Bring those cals up somehow! I bet your leggies want some carbs after a workout like that! :D

So I had this whole post ready about surfing and sports but I totally lost my train of thought after I saw those squat numbers!!! Holy crap Sb, you are sooooooo strong!!!!!!!!!! Awesome job!! Okay, original thoughts coming back....
Taking lessons with a friend would be great! That's how I started and it was so much fun, those instructors are so helpful and laid back. It'll be a blast-and they'll keep you away from the local surfers who think that the whole pacific is theirs!
My hubs is pretty athletic, he was an all-star high school athlete and dabbled in some college intramurals-I'd say I'm more into sports than he is though. (He's an insane golfer though, gotta give him credit for that) I used to play bball at night for 5-6 hours at a time!!! Crazy! He'd be more into them if he had more time, I guess I mean if he made more time ;) He was a pretty heavy lifter at one point too and it's funny now because he'll ask me how to do deadlifts or what he should be eating :D He's one of those that can put on insane amounts of muscle quickly with a bad diet....hmmm, just hate those people (except him, cause he looks good :))
I can't believe you were in Hawaii in December...I bet is was soooo beautiful!!!! I've been in March and May and it was great both times. I didn't know those surfers were so far out there???!!! Guess you need to bring binoculars. I love it when they have to tow the surfers in by a jetski-how "wicked" is that!!!LOL!
Would your hubs go with you surfing?

Good workout... great numbers... I going to try the race tommorow I know I will probally end up walking part of it...
sb_cali
06-02-2005, 10:04 AM
Good morning!
Steph: I don't think it's going to matter if you walk part of it. Really! Just get out there and do it :) Relax and have fun with it. I know you're a little anxious about it, but from what I've been told, you're going to get done with it and wonder why you sweated it at all... You'll do great! :D I'll be watching the board Sat night to see how you do - you better post!
Arose: Ya know, hubs used to surf long time ago. After 12 years of marriage he's "settled in" a bit. :p What kills me though is if he just cleans up his diet and starts running again he drops weight like CRAZY! Anyway, he might do the surfing thing with me…. Not sure. Ironically he thinks that I’m hitting some sort of crisis because I’m approaching 40… ha. I was talking about the rock climbing wall, then mentioned tennis lessons, and wanting to bike to work – he laughs and wonders why I’ve become so obsessed! LOL… I just smile and tell him it’s those “internet people” influencing me :D (I can’t think of a better influence though)
Kris: I was going to say I don’t know why I wimped out of doing more at 205, but I actually do know why… No giggling and this may sound stupid, but on my last 2 reps I GRUNTED! I know it sounds funny, but the 2 guys in the room looked over at me and I immediately got a little self-conscious. I thought grunting was one thing, but if I continue and fall over I’m really gonna feel stupid. So I unloaded the 10’s and took it back down to 185. In retrospect I wish I had just left the plates on and did another small set at 205. geesh!
So I added up my calories yesterday I was surprised that I only hit 1585 calories. :( I’m going to try to get back up to 1750-1800 today. I was VERY excited this morning to see a nice low blood sugar reading of 82 this morning! Yippee!!! This is what “normal” people usually have in the morning, but for me it’s like hitting the jackpot! :D Unfortunately, it’s a total mystery as to why one morning it will be low and the next it will be 105…. even when food/exercise are the same. Oh well – I’m happy with today’s number.
Today’s workout will be cardio – probably HIIT about 4pm…

I say, go for 215 next week and grunt even louder for them. LOL
sb_cali
06-03-2005, 11:34 AM
Thanks Kris and Barb... ya know what? You're right! I think I will grunt louder! :p And "do they squat that much?" LOL... Lemme tell ya, I hardly see ANYONE in the squat rack at the Y (except for my co-worker). I think I probably bench more than most of the boyz there squat... :D
Now Golds is another story, there are lots of heavy squatters there. ;)
Yesterday I went for 40 min cardio... about 25 minutes on the elliptical and 15 minutes on the treadmill. I alternated walking at 4mph @ incline 6.5 and then jogging. It felt great! I just had to keep my headphones turned up loudly so that I don't hear that THUD-THUD-THUD when I jog. LOL... I'm sure it's just exaggerated in my head, but it sure seems LOUD.
My cals yesterday were about 1700.
Protein: 182 - 43%
Carbs: 157 - 37%
Fat: 36 - 19%
Fiber: 28
Today's workout will be bi's & shoulders & abs. Shoulders are one of my favorite exercises but I hardly ever get sore... Any suggestions for a killer shoulder workout? (I think I'll post this on the traininng board too...)
I'm so excited because it's actually partially sunny here today! :) Hope it stays this way through the weekend.

Hm, don't know about a shoulder wo but maybe you could check out those websites with all the exercises on em....which have totally removed themselves from my brain. Whew! I thought I was the only one making that horrible treadmill-thudding :p
I really should try to run on actual ground one of these days - maybe Sunday I can jog with hubs... he keeps saying that I can't keep up with him. He may be right, but I'd love to prove him wrong.
I did change my shoulder workout a bit, not much, but just a little. This is how it went:
I should start by saying I wasn't sure (on the clean & press) if I should just clean it on the first rep and then just do a set of military BB presses from there. So I did a little both. Half the sets were full clean & press and the other half I cleaned on the first rep.
Clean & Press
1 warm-up with just the bar (45#)
3 sets of 8 @ 65#
Seated DB Side/Lateral Raise
1 set of 8 @ 10
2 sets of 8 @ 15
Front BB Raise
3 sets of 8 @ 20# (super slow)
Bent over DB rev flyes
3 sets of 8 @ 10#
Incline DB Curls
8 @ 15#
8 @ 20#
8 @ 25#
4 @ 30#
Standing Preacher one-arm DB Curls
8 @ 15#
2 sets of 8 @ 20#
Hanging knee raises, BB rollouts, ball crunches
As usual, cals are hanging around 1700 :)
Hope everyone has a great weekend!!! I'm taking my boys to a dog parade tomorrow morning - most people take their doggies too, I haven't decided if I want to take ours or not. He's a SPAZ!!! :p Then if it's sunny we're gonna hang by the pool.

sb_cali: Was stopping by to say hello and---wow!! I just read through your journal and you are freakin' strong---it's awesome! I especially love reading you leg day entries....maybe someday soon I will get back to the heavy leg days...also, it's really reassuring to read about someone else who struggles with thyroid problems and insulin resistance and is still very successfully working out and building muscle. Totally inspirational...I have PCOS and it's soooo much fun trying to keep everything under control. I haven't even mentioned that yet in my journal because I've got my hands full with my car accident injuries and my asthma. :) It's all getting better every day, right? That's my mantra...

Hey there,
It's Saturday afternoon here and I'm just happy to not be at work today! :D
We got up early this morning and went downtown to watch the Dog Parade, it was fun! My boys and I are big time dog lovers ;) I love BIG dogs, but we actually have a Jack-Russell - he's small but *thinks* he's a big dog. LOL.
Mo: thanks for stopping by! and yeah... it's quite a challenge trying to see results with the insulin resistance and thyroid crap. But the scary thing is imagining what my health would be like if I wasn't fighting it every step of the way. I'm sure I'd be a big ol' SLUG :p And there's no way that's going to happen. I owe it to myself and to my boys to be as healthy as possible.
Anyway - I have to admit my shoulders are not sore after yesterdays workout :( I know that's not necessary, but dang.. I LOVE DOMS :D Maybe I should bump the weight up next time.
Today's workout was 45 minutes of cardio. Afterwards I stopped into the weight room to get a nice hanging stretch on the dip bars. I did some dips and looked over to see a guy doing burpees! He was sweatin' hard! I almost high-fived him cuz I was so impressed, he was like the energizer bunny! just kept going.. and going...
I'm gonna go check out stephs journal now to see how her run went!

sb_cali: Maybe you could try doing shoulders all alone or paired with something you're not trying overly hard to develop...? Also, have you tried shrugs or something else for your traps, nasty cable cage shoulder exercises or just good old evil military press? When I was trying to put some size on my shoulders I used to do military press first, then cleans (full on each time) and then things like cable exercises and laterals more as finishing exercises. And then I would be sore as hell the next day!
Actually, you're lucky that you don't get DOMS all of the time. I am constantly in some horrible state of DOMS, slathered in menthol-y stuff that makes me smell like an old man. My employees are always like, "*sniff sniff* oh here comes the boss!"
yours in pain (hey, it beats being a slug, right?),

Do your shoulders ever get DOMS after you work them? I don´t think mine ever do, and I lift moderatly heavy on them. Just about every other body part will contract some DOMS but almost never the shoulders.
Remember, you´don´t really want to lift TOO heavy as you don´t want any shoulder injuries resulting.
Other than that, things are lookin´ good in here ;)

Monday morning and it's such a gorgeous day!!!
My only regret is that I didn't get up at 5:30 as planned and hit the gym. I was sleeping SOOOO good and yet I know that once I'm actually standing and out of bed I'm usually good to go! Ah well - I'll still get my workout in, it will just be this afternoon.
(Tommorow morning I'm definitely gonna go early! :p)
I took yesterday off and also had some pizza last night. YUM! ALthough it's my own pizza so it's not the grease-puddle pizza that the pizza chains usually serve. We had some friends over and went swimming, played outside and then had the pizza for dinner. It was a fun day!
Today's workout will be chest/tri - I'm looking forward to it. Food today is right on, hubs is making a Costco run so we'll have lots of broccoli, cottage cheese and chicken breasts for the rest of the week! yay!
Not much else to add to the journal today - guess I'm kinda boring this Monday :p

And Megs - "Awesome!?!?!?!?" Moi ? :o I'm flattered you'd think that... heck it's all I can do to keep up with everyone else on this board! You all just kick my booty into gear - I like that!
This morning I DID manage to get up and get to the gym.. BUT CHECK THIS OUT?????
It's not Golds Gym anymore... some club called Spectrum bought out all 3 Santa Barbara Gold's... I'm SO BUMMED!!!!!! All of a sudden Saturday they switched over. In fact inside you can see where they pretty much just ripped all the Gold's posters off the walls. :( I've been a member of Gold's for over 10 years - looks like dues are going up soon too.
Anyway - all my buddies (& my mom) are still there so at least that's still the same :D Whew!
Oh yeah... the workout... 40 minutes of cardio - now.. I've been calling it "moderate cardio" because I'm nowhere near the puking stage as I get with HIIT, but when I do the "heart rate" calculation I'm at about 90%. I checked the whole "target zone" thing and it says that hi intensity is 85%.. huh? That doesn't feel like a workout at all.... not a big deal, but kinda interesting.
Okay - today: food is good. Water is good!!
I'm gonna go to another bike store in a few minutes and see what they've got. :)

Hey gurls :p
Wednesday and I just finished my yummy lunch of tuna and happy cookies! :D (oh yah... and a little bit of PB... yum!)
Kris: I think the *new* gym has no intention of rewarding any loyal members.. LOL. I checked out the rates at their other locations and the lowest was for police/fire and those were $68/mo  Crap! I'm only paying $29 right now, I can't even imagine they'll keep them the same. Even then I had to get really aggressive with their "membership sales rep" for him to even quote the rates... SHEESH!!!
For today's workout I got to the gym early again today....
Legs:
Angled Leg Press - 8@270, 8@360, 8@450, 8@540
Bulgarian Squats - 3 sets of 8 @ 20#, 25#, 30# dumbbells
Olympic Squats - 3 sets of 8 @ 135 and THEN.....
I thought about the 20 rep set.
Then I attempted the 20 rep squat.
LOL. No go. I only had 135# too! I'm wondering if I should try it at the beginning of my leg workout. Or, just start with a lower weight. Dang - for those of you doing these .. I am in awe! It's flippin' hard!!
SLDL - 3 sets at 135#
Standing alternating hammie curls - 3 sets @ 20#
Angled Calf Raise - 3 sets of 8 @ 220#, 240#, 260#
The other thing is that I usually don't do legs in the early am. Maybe it's all mental, but I find that I do better in the afternoon after I've eaten. This morning I had a small snack at 5:30a before heading to the gym, but I wonder if it makes a difference at all.
Food today looks like it will come in at about 1900 calories. (Yesterday was about 1670)
Oh! I checked out the bike shop yesterday only to have the guy recommend a specialized rock-hopper. Of course I told him I wanted something under $500 and he pointed out the rock-hopper at $489. Dang... I saw some $300 bikes that looked pretty nice too. I told my friend at work about it and she laughed - "Oh... well no one ever PAYS the sticker price... it's like a car.. you've got to haggle with them". Can I just tell you that I SUCK at haggling? :p LOL I still need to go back and give the bikes a test spin...

Yeah - that's what I was thinking about. I actually want to start riding to work and it's mostly bike paths and roads. BUT - right off the bike path is a hard dirt path that runs along the cliffs above the ocean. (sigh.. it's so pretty) and I want to be able to turn off the path anytime and not worry about the bike being rugged enough.
As of now, I have ZERO plans of riding down any mountains :p (now THAT would leave a mark... LOL)
What a WO Sb Cali!! It makes me tired just reading about it!!!!
Now.. now.. barb how on earth can my workout possibly make YOU tired? That's just crazy :D
Okay - on a side note, I went to look for some new cropped jeans on my lunch break... and got sidetracked with looking at bathing suits... and ultimately trying on bathing suits. Oh my.... who are the evil people that install those mirrors and lights from hell into the dressing room?!?!!?
I'm now back at work thinking I should have gone and done cardio instead of shopping. (It was not a pretty sight) (although - I did have fun flexing my back muscles and seeing them move...albeit they were under a layer of "padding", but I saw them! They don't monitor dressing rooms with hidden cameras anymore do they??)

LMAO! Oh, the dreaded swimsuit shopping! Who actually enjoys that? No, I don't think they have monitors in those rooms ;)
Stop with all that cardio talk too-you are doing great! You hardly ever cheat, you push some serious weight around, and you get enough cardio in with your boys and all the activities you do (swimming, playing, running around outside, biking soon enough). Sb, if I had your legs and arms I would feel on top of the world!!!!! Be wearing mini skirts and tiny little tank tops-I am dead serious. You look incredible! Keep up the good work and be kind to yourself, you look great!
Nice try on the 20 reppers...yes, I think you definitely have to be in the right mind-set and really feel like kickin some squat butt to pull it off. (and more than a little snack before) There is always next week's leg day!!!! :D

I hate swim suit shopping. When I get a suit for lap swimming I usually get the exact same suit as before so I don't have to try anything on.
Dh and I went to Whistler for our honeymoon (can't wait to go back!). We had fun watching all the mt. bikers going down the mt. A gondola takes you up to the top of Whistler Mt. and it makes stops along the way to let out the hikers and mt. bikers. It looks like tons of fun to go down that mt on a bike, but I'm sure the view is a tad different when you're actually sitting on the bike looking down. Have fun bike shopping. When dh gets back we plan on getting mt. bikes for ourselves. The 2 oldest are riding bikes now so we can go for family bike rides. My Fuji triathlon bike is too fast for family rides so I have to get something a little slower.

I am SO glad I'm not alone in the whole swim-suit thing. It's just plain scary  I don't know why stores don't invest more money into the whole dressing-room appeal. I'd bet they'd see a whopping increase in sales if they'd just swap out the lights and mirrors for more *gentle & friendly* lights and mirrors... LOL
Anyway - I guess I'm seeing changes (weird changes tho'). I did try on 2 pairs of shorts this morning that were usually pretty darn tight. First pair nice and loose... 2nd pair? I had to check that I hadn't picked up a pair of my 8 year old's shorts by mistake. I couldn't breathe. LOL... what--ever :D
Today's workout: Cardio: I am spinning that's it! Finally!
One the upside my legs aren't sore... spinning won't kill me... but the downside is: my legs aren't sore!! what the heck? I like my DOMS.
Also, I cannot wait to get the bike. I think the increase in cardio will be a VERY good thing! :D

That's strange that you don't have DOMS, I just credit that to good post WO nutrition when it happens to me, but I always eat the same thing post WO so that doesn't work!!

Loved the SPINNING!!! I wore the wrong kind of shorts, didn't bring any water and my bike squeaked, but it was so much FUN!!!! It seemed like about 20 minutes into it something just clicked and I started pouring sweat and getting the best workout. I'm definitely making that part of my weekly workout. ;)
Today's workout is going to be Back/Bi's/shoulders. BUt first I'm going to try to sneak over to one of the dept. stores and buy some new workout clothes... I'm so sick of my workout clothes and.. how do I say this?.. um they just make me feel "masculine". (Here's my irrational post for the week :D ) I guess since I'm a big girl... (thick chick.. LOL) I just don't feel very pretty when I go to workout. (THERE! I said it... even though I know it sounds stupid) But I see all the yoga/pilates/spinning crowd wearing the cool sports bras/yoga tops and trendy outfits and I'm always in my drawstring shorts and big ol' tee. SO - 'nuff said. I'm heading out to find something girly! :)
I'll check in later with my workout stats and meals.... and I still gotta figure out yesterday's food.

Oh girl, you are gonna have sooo much fun with the spin! Its such a great workout!!
Yea, go buy some new clothes, it really is importent to feel good about yourself while you are working out. When you look the part, you become the part, at least that is how I feel!
Good post SB, good post

I know what you mean about the workout clothes. I've been buying myself a little bit here and there as I've been losing weight. It's fun to wear cute clothes to the gym, I consider it an added insentive to work out.
Mo_ria
06-13-2005, 09:10 PM
oh yes, the workout clothes. I am the queen of masculine workout wear! Girls at my gym are decked out in all kinds of crazy get ups and full make-up, etc. Not me---Hanes V neck mens t shirts and sweatpants, baby. If you're over the whole frumpy workout wear thing, you should splurge and get new stuff. Life is short. I think it's important to feel good, so you should buy yourself some new clothes and show off those awesome biceps! Thick chicks rule!
Mo
PS I just blew $100 two days ago in Sephora on ridiculously expensive french under eye cream and Urban Decay sparkly eyeshadow, so I know what you mean. Whenever I feel crappy, I splurge on pricey makeup and it always makes me feel "prettier". Even if I don't wear it all of the time :)

Hey!
Boy – 3 days of no posting and I’m going through withdrawls.. LOL
Where should I start? Maybe I should just skip to my meltdown on Friday night.
It all actually started on Friday afternoon when I asked my co-worker about his bicep measurements. By Friday night my curiosity had built up until I couldn’t stand it anymore.
I got out the tape measure.
I was excited!
I hadn’t measured anything in well over a year. I started with my bicep measurement: flexed – almost 14” Wow! That is definitely bigger than last time.
I cautiously started threading the tape measure around my waist…
“don’t suck it in” I tell myself…. “but don’t let it all hang out either”
I nervously glance down and peek at the number.
No way. Certainly the tape measure is backwards - or I used the wrong side…
Check again….
And what IS that feeling I’m feeling? Oh yeah… dread. It would be “dread”.
Thirty-four inches. Yep. :( thirty-four. I then quickly went through the other measurements thinking it couldn’t get any worse. (I was wrong)
Chest - 41
Butt- 41
Thigh -25
Calf – 15
I honestly couldn’t tell ya how long it had been since I measured last. But I do know that the last 3 are at least 1” more than they were last time. <sigh>
My thought process went kinda like this:
What??!?!?!?!?!?
I’m not working hard enough
I’m eating too much
I’m not drinking enough water
I’m bloated? No – timing doesn’t fit.
I need more cardio
Maybe it’s just muscle under the fat that’s being built up… doubtful (wishful thinking)
I’m fat
Enough.
Let's spin this the other way....Try this one on for size… maybe these measurements are an improvement – maybe I was actually <gulp> even BIGGER 3 months ago.
Maybe this is progress….. duh… why didn’t I measure 3 months ago???… then I might be celebrating now instead of wanting to crawl under a rock.
After several hours of reasoning to myself and taking many deep-cleansing-breaths :p I decided that there’s really nothing I can do EXCEPT to push on. I can’t crawl under a rock. There’s only one thing that will get the waist measurement going down and that is to keep doing what I’m doing. Eating clean and working out. I guess I just didn't expect that it would be this hard. I know that sounds weird, but why is it that my friends just simply cut out junk food and sodas and the weight just falls off them?
So… onto better and positive things: my weekend had me bike shopping AND getting 2 new cute-girlie workout tops :D
The bikes: I tried several, but so far like the Kona Dew. I can’t believe how much lighter bikes are than what mine had been. (Ross Mountain Bike circa 1986 – LOL) The Kona was in my budget too! But I’m going to try a few treks and specialized today as well. I can’t wait to actually get a bike! It’s going to really feel good to be more active and I love that feeling of flying down the road on a bike!
As far as workouts… after the weekend tape measuring saga I almost wondered if I should switch things around a bit, but I’m still contemplating several different options… all I know is that today is Spinning. Whee!
AND.....Hi Megs, Mo and Wannabe, thanks for popping in!
(Boy this was a long post… :p )
If anyone has any suggestions for me, please let me know... I guess I still have a few doubts... am I doing things right? Where could I improve?
I'll check back in later with my meals/totals...

Sb, glad to see you back :D
Hmmm, tough weekend???!! Your measurements are fine! You are lower than me in the butt by 2 inches almost and lower in the thigh by .5 inch! **Dreaming of smaller butt/thighs**
Sorry it was a bad weekend but you know you didn't crawl up under a rock did you? No!
How are your clothes fitting?? Looser? This is where I think BF% comes in handy too. And by the numbers you push you likely could be building tons of muscle!!! YOU ARE NOT FAT! AT ALL! Did we see the same pics??? Geesh, Sb, you look fantastic in those!
How fun though about the bike shopping and getting new tops :p That had to lift your spirits a bit. Sb, you are doing great...how long have you been with your current program? Maybe if it's been a while you could change things up a bit, do HST, less cardio, more cardio, etc. The possibilities are endless so maybe post a recap of goals/current training/nutrition? I dunno, you could also keep going currently for another month and take more measurements then. That way you will KNOW which direction you are heading.
Keep it up Sb, I'm proud of you for pushin on, not giving in to those apple fritters (I'm just guessing you were tempted this weekend ;))

I agree with arose. How are your clothes fitting? You are doing such a great job, don't get discouraged. Maybe it is time to mix things up and try a different routine. Great bicep measurement btw!
Trek bikes are really nice. I don't know much about mountain bikes, but I know that the Trek and Specialized brand are really good and very popular with triathletes and roadies. LOL about the light bikes. My dad said the same thing when I let him test ride my tri bike. He used to have a 10-speed when he was young (1970's) and he was amazed at how fast the new bikes are.

You will love being outside on the bike ... fun cardio ... those inches will melt away before you know it and you'll have fun losing them!!! What could be better than that???

Wow, where to start with you SB...there was a lot of info in that post, I wish I had more time to post but here goes with the high lights!
Its only as hard as you make it. If you believe that you love pb, oats and whey more than soda and movie popcorn, they you will begin to truly love the oats more than soda. Its mental, its physical and its emotional. It is a life changing decision that you have made, and damn girl, you push around some serious weight!!!! I bet money that those friends who are losing weight are not pushing the weight in the gym like you are! You must be proud of that!
You are strong!!!
No, no suggestions- you know what you are doing. You have read the nutrition sections and you know how to use the weights and now you have a bike...what more do you need!! You got this sb...NO PROBLEM!
yea, how much fun is a downhill slope on your new bike!!

You ladies ROCK! :D You really have no idea how much I appreciate your responses. I'm flying solo here - none of my best friends that are serious about weight-lifting live near me. Luckly I have 2 friends here at work that are serious about fitness, but no one encourages me the way you all do. :o
I'm going to keep on doing what I'm doing on the food & nutrtion. And I've decided to see what kind of difference commuting to work on bike makes before I do anything drastic. :p (I just gotta get that bike!) LOL, what started out as a simple decision to buy a new bike has snowballed into this intense information-gathering/research to the point where I think my head is going to explode.. LOL
Anyway - spinning yesterday was SUPERB! I loved my instructor and my bike didn't squeak! I wore my new girlie top and for once was happy to look at my reflection and see my muscles in the mirror. :D Today is leggy day!
Yesterday's food was way too low in cals. (1300) I have this bad habit when I'm disappointed in my progress to offset it by eating too little. I know it's not the brightest thing to do, so thankfully it rarely happens.
I'll report back in later with food & workout stats.
Thanks again! {{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}

Yay Sb!!!!
Lookin good in that girlie top, eh???!!! I'm sure you do!!!
I have that same prob about cals getting out of hand low when I feel like I am not progressing or ate too much the day before, etc. I think it's okay to balance out cals over a few days, but 1300 is pretty low. No worries though, today is new and fresh and 1700-1800 again, RIGHT? I shouldn't talk but I'm much better at giving advice than heeding it myself :p
Have fun with legs!!
sb_cali
06-15-2005, 03:35 PM
I did a 20-repper squat!!!
It was legs today and it was rockin'! I was totally psyched up with the right tunes, good energy and the weight room to myself - almost ;)
Squats
8 @ 135
8 @ 185
3 @ 205 - brief pause and then 3 more @ 205
20 @ 135 WHEE!!!! okay - I was puffin like the little engine that could, not really doing "WHEE" through this set, but afterward I was FLYING! I realize that I'm nowhere NEAR what P, Megs & Kris are putting up, but someday :p
Leg Press
10 @ 270
8 @ 360
8 @ 450
8 @ 540
6 @ 610 :D Man next to me stared and said he was impressed... several times.. shucks :o
Bulgarian Squats
3 x 8 @ 20 dumbbells
Drop-set Leg Extensions
8 @ 90
8 @ 80
6 @ 60
6 @ 40 then my quads died.. :p
Angled Calf Raise
3 x 12 @ 250
Seated Calf Raise
3 X 12 @ 45
I just got back to work and my co-worker asked if I had gone to spinning class again... (red faced & wobbly)..LOL - I'm beat!
I'm going to go make my PWO - I've got fresh, yummy raspberries waiting.

610 on the leg press, too! What do they feed you guys in California?!?!?!
After a workout like this, all thoughts of NOT being strong and any doubt should be removed. You are kicking butt! Your measurements are dropping and you are getting stronger... :D

Hee-hee.. I'm having such a great day. It's all gloomy outside, but I'm feeling really good! :D
I just got back from spinning... is there such a thing as a "spinner's high"?
I guess what's kinda cool is that I usually am in the cardio room or the weight room with my earphones plugged into my ipod and I never talk, but it's actually so nice to meet new people because of the spin class. (I know I sound like a total goober...)
Anyway - (thanks Kris) the DOMS from yesterday's leg workout are here too! tomorrow I'll be dyin' for sure ;)
Meals yesterday barely peaked at 1700.... hmmm... but I did get 188 grams of protein in.
Today meals are looking good, although I'm off schedule and I've only eaten one meal so far
9:45a - Oatmeal, LFCC & Flax
SPIN
1:45 - Chicken & black beans
3:45 - Protein shake with raspberries & PB
6:45 - Egg whites, LF Cheese & low carb wrap & salad
9:30 - Protein powder & water; broccoli & lf salad dressing YUM! (Has anyone tried the Galeo's Miso dressing yet??? It's so yumm! *drool*)
I'm thinking my cals will end up being about 1700 today.
Hey! the sun just came out... very cool! Have a great Thursday!

We have so.. much fun with the spinning classes ... everyone is very social during warm-up and we share stories, jokes, and weekend plans!!! The bonds really caring over to the rest of the gym floor and we even do spinning class lunches, etc!! It is a wonderful way to socialize and exercise at the same time!! I LOVE the spinning high!! Anyhoo, just checkin to see if you've fallen over yet with all these earthquakes!! You gettin any???!!!

sb---AWESOME leg workout! holy cr@p! I'll be thinking of you tomorrow when I am doing my leg day. You are inspiring, girl.
And when I used to spin, I had serious "spinner's high"---sooooo addictive. I used to be so addicted to cycling in general, outdoor and indoor.
I know what you mean about the feeling you get when you are researching buying a bike. I spent all day bike shopping today and ended up feeling so panicky and overloaded with info that I ended up not buying anything! What kind of bike do you want to buy? I went shopping with the intention of buying a mountain bike but then this sweet super light Specialized hybrid caught my eye and I started thinking, hmmmm---maybe I need a road bike AND a mountain bike! Uh oh...

Okay - on the earthquake thing. We've always been told 2 things about earthquakes.
#1 lots of little earthquakes can "break-up" a big earthquake... (good thing)
#2 lots of little earthquakes can signal a BIG ONE..(not a good thing :p )
LOL.... so you can see it's kinda hard to predict what will happen. We haven't gotten any good shakes in our town, but the tsunami warning was a bit unnerving. We live about 1/4 mile from the beach and we're at sea level - so.... I'm not sure about that.
It's a gorgeous day here so I'm gonna clean up the kitchen and take the kids to the pool... and get me some TAN :D

Monday afternoon:
Just got back from a sweaty 40 min cardio on the elliptical. Whew! Today was one of those days that just flew by and pretty soon I realized it was 4pm! When I realized I was just about to talk myself out of working out, I jumped up, changed and rushed to the gym. :D
Although, since today WAS flying by, I realized that I skipped a meal. (I'll add this to the list of "Things I'd never thought I'd say" :p )
So I've only had 750 cals today and it's 5pm... not sure how to shovel the rest in for the day. I might throw some PB in there! YUM
I confess that I didn't work out yesterday. I had the opportunity, I just opted out of it so I could just relax and make dinner for my dad and hubs. It turned out good too! :D
Hey Steph, the boys just got out last Friday and school starts again on August 27. Only 70 days of summer... yep, we counted. Today hubs took the boys to the lake WITHOUT ME! phooey... stoopid work! What's up with that?!?! LOL...
Anyway - I'm headed home to dig for my bottle of Aleve... (hate.hate.hate.cramps)

Since I'm going to spinning today at noon, I didn't want to do cardio so I just kinda messed around trying a couple of different machines.
5 min warm up on step mill
