Having never participated in a contest as of yet, I look at some of the posing routines and feel somewhat intimidated...I think I have the look already but should I just not worry about it and go ahead and do it?? Or go to a contest to watch first?

Checking out a contest is a great idea, but if there isn't one before the show you want to compete in, then don't let that hold you back. I do think that a lot of reseach is needed so that you are doing the poses right. You might want to contact someone else who you know has competed and ask them for a quick lesson.

absolutely go to a show before you compete. You need to go and watch the variety in terms of different routines and physiques. It does not take long to figure out what looks good and what does not, what works and what doesn't, ect...
Everytime I go to a show that I am not competing in, I take a notebook and take notes. I write down everything I think I can use in my own prep. What kinds of music. How many poses do the competitors use in one minute, how do they hit the poses, what angles make you look big, or small....all the things like this make all the difference in the world. The goal at your first show is to be so well prepared that when you walk out there you look like a veteran of the stage...and remember this...
Your competition is training hard and is doing all this...so if you are serious about competing, you need to be doing the same. Its all or nothing in this sport.
Good luck to you!!!!
