Depends on your skin, I started at 10 min fine, but if i go more then 15... I get too dark. Great for getting rid of acne too.

I've gone as often as 7 days/week for 20 min each time (getting ready for competition).
Right now I'm about 15 weeks out and I'm going 4-5x/week for 10 min each time (10 min is the max I can do at this new place).

Do you guys have trouble tanning in some spots in a bed? Like on your inner arms and on your sides?

The trick with the tanning beds is to move around a bit, so that your butt doesn't get burnt. Put your body weight on your right hip for awhile, then alternate to your left hip, and then relaxed. Lift your arms for part of your time, too, so that your arm pits get a tan, too.
Tanning beds can have stronger lights than others, so be sure to lessen your time on a new bed. And ask the salon to let you know when they replace the bulbs, so that you don't get a painful surprise.
But I think that in order to get dark enough for a great stage presence, you should use self-tanning products instead. Save your skin! Be careful what brand you use, though, as some brands as banned by the federations (due to weird colourings that result).

To tan my underarms I will lay for half my time on my back and the other half I lay on my stomach, move down a little and cross my arms over my head. I don't ever tan my face so it works well. By the end your arms lose all their blood but it is worth it, I look more even. The standups cost way too much at the place I go!

A few little things I've found useful:
- go at the peak of "rush hour". The bulbs wll be warmer and you'll get the most of the bed.
- tanning oils make a huge difference
- don't shower after you tan (makes as much sense as going to McDonald's after you do cardio)
- move around alot, if you stay in one place you will miss areas
- try and find a bed that is 4 feet wide, especially the guys on this board because you are likely bigger than many people who tan (it just makes life easier)
- bring a sock with you (guys), nothing else
- always keep in mind that though these beds are safer than sun tanning, too much of it can spell bad sh*t for you in the long run
- try all the different types of beds because your skin tone makes a huge difference
I am not a competitor, just a recreational tanner (hey I think I invented a new name for this). Just some of the things I've found handy for myself.

7 minutes for your first time
12 minutes for your second time
14 minutes for your third
Keep it to 16-18 minutes at an absolute max. Probably less if you use accelerants. Anymore you'll burn forsure.

But the strength of the bed is a big factor too. I go to a place where the strongest bed is only designed for 8 minutes of use, whihc the lightest bed is for 15 mins. The best thing to do is talk to the people at the tanning place about their beds and what you want to do. They know their own beds and will be able to help you out.

I don't understand how showering makes a difference
