Today was our first practice that lasted for six hours. 8am-2pm. Our coaches had us line up and talked to us about new kinds of stretches that they said the NY Giants and Notre Dame use amongs others. It's Dynamic Stretches. They said that they should cut down on pulls and tears.. I was wondering if this is better than static stretching.

dynamic stretching and static stretching are totally different. dynamic stretching should be done before a workout or practice. static should be done after. they arent better than static stretches they just have a different purpose.
Lofty.

What the guy above said.
Plus, static strething usually isolates the muscle, whereas dynamic stretching can work several muscles at once, and is much better for preparing the muscles to a game environment.
Statis stretching should only be done in a cool down, and for very short periods at a time.

Dynamic stretching isn't NEW. It's always been there. If your coaches told you that dynamic stretching was new, they owned you all. They have a different purpose to static stretching. You should do dynamic stretching before you train, and static at some other time. Some people say to do the static stretching immediately after the training session, but I think you should wait, at least after weight training. Weight training causes microtears in the muscle fibres. If you go and do static stretching right after the workout, you're tearing the muscle fibres even more. Even Poliquin recommends waiting at least an hour after the workout to do static stretching.

All NFL teams and college teams do dynamic now before practices and workouts.

Man I love my school more every day when I get to read threads like this. We don't do any of the crazy conditioning practices you guys do, we know what kind of stretches to do, we have a good strength program that makes sense.

You will lose some explosiveness when you do static stretching before a sport that requires power.

Dynamic stretching is money in the bank. When I was at Velocity Fitness after college before the nfl (camps, I'll be honest, I got cut after NFL Europe)we did them twice a day. It increased my 40 and all those other nonsense tests, but more importantly, it helped my "functional flexability." I highly reccommend them prior to lifting, training, etc. My favorite is the Dinosaur Walk. They kept preaching that flexibility makes a player a better athlete, and after being through it, I have to agree. Have a good season.

Wow, I didn't know there was different types of stretching. Anyone have a link explaining the difference between the two? I've been stretching a lot before and after workout, but it's the same thing. Like, crossing my arm and using the other to stretch it and hold position for a minute, repeat with the other arm, and sitting down with my legs apart and stretching down so I try to touch my head on the floor. Is this static or dynamic, and when should I do which?

Defensive line. And to keep it on topic, I love to stretch.

static. Only do after practice. Look up dynamic and do that before.
