I was just wondering if anyone eats a lot of fruit during precontest dieting? Or even any fruit at all? I know the deal about fructose metabolism...but I've noticed in the past that I tend to lean out on fruit pretty well...but that doesn't necessarily translate over to contest lean. Just curious.

I eat fruit all the way through. I primarily eat fruits high in potassium, such as pitted dates and raisins.

What are your concerns about fruit consumption during precontest (aside from the sugars)?

Well, many people believe that fructose cannot be stored as glycogen...that the way in which fructose is metabolized by the liver, it can only be stored as fat (or burned as energy).

im a huge fan of fruit, but i limit it to only apples, oranges, and berries while cutting because these are the lowest glycemic fruits. i do eliminate them while carb depleting and carbing up before a show. unfortunately, you are only supposed to eat dry carbs the last couple days of cutting. i hate rice cakes!!!

Eat grapefruit and steak 3 days out from your show, and if you've done all your homework properly, you'll be dry and hard for Saturday

I thought grapes had higher glucose than fructose?

I ate grapefruit after my long workout and cardio sessions, added with a scoop of whey.

Stay with fruits such as grapefruit, strawberries, etc. Stay away from inferior fruits like bananas, melons, etc. at this time. Still, limit even these.

This is the one for an apple. Scroll down and you'll see the fructose/glucose measurements.

http://ww.nutritiondata.com is the best site I've found.

no it cannot be stored as glycogen as the branch point at which it enters glycolysis is already past the irreversible step for glycogen storage. However, since it is only exclusively oxidize, this will spare any intake of glucose for glycogen. This is why they find that fructose + glucose actually replenshes glycogen faster than a pure glucose solution.

I have a piece of fruit for my breakfast and one for lunch. Usually banana, apples, oranges. Thats the only sugar I get for 3 months.

1 pc of fruit per day, right after training.
