These muscles are also known as "core stability" exercises. They now mainly centre on the transverse abdominus muscle, a veryu much under exercised muscle,

Australian physiotherapists have pioneered protocols for activating and strengthening this muscle. There are exercises for it as floor exercises, swiss ball exercises and also dynamic exercises.

The exercises are quite specific and technical, and need to be taught by suitably trained people.

They are very effective for suporting the back.....if working well they beat the **** out of weight belts, and can improve your squat performance!!!

I do some of my ab work on a swiss ball, and they do seem to bring the stabilizer muscles into play more.
