hey all, recently iv'e been curious about olympic weightlifting (cant wait to watch 2008). i know there are alot different weight classes. i weigh about 142lbs. how much can the elite guys in that weight class or one near it lift? clean and jerk, snatch, squat.

Well, that would be the 69kg class. One of the best in that class, Galabin Boevski, from Bulgaria--gold in 2000--could snatch 160kg and clean and jerk 196kg. As to his squatting ability, well, in the 1998 Bulgarian training hall tape from Ironmind, he does a 250kg back squat (Olympic-style, ATG of course) with such ease that I would estimate he maxed out at well over 600 lbs., maybe 650. He was quite lanky, but unbelievably strong. Of course, he was the elite of the elite, so maybe a 145-150kg snatch and and 175-180kg clean and jerk and probably 250kg back squat is more typical.
