Reason why I post this here rather then the "Fat Loss" forum is because a lot of people(read: college kids) there are too "hardcore" and need to realize that not everyone (male/female) is looking to become ultra-cut and go pro.

Basically, my GF is 25 years old, no health problems whatsoever. She's about 5'7-5'8 and weighs around 160. A year ago she used to be 120, same height, 4 years ago, she was 110, same height.
She has 3 jobs (internship+ college jobs) and is also a full time student, so free time is hard to come by.(and so are regular, healthy meals)
Most of the extra weight is carried in her stomach...her butt/hips/thighs are very firm, but the belly's getting flabby :(
So with the limited amount of free time and the irregular schedule that she has, what is the best we can do for her? She's not trying to become miss america or anything, she just wants to lose the extra weight as quickly as possible.
I don't know much about female fat-loss, but what worked well for some of YOU (women). I got her some Total Lean from GNC today and we will start some cardio this week. Keep in mind that carrying her own lunch with her is not always an option and some take-out food is a must every now and then due to her schedule. Her friend just lost about 50 pounds in the last 6 months(I'm pretty sure she was using some ephedra-based stuff since she got it online and lost that weight too fast) and now she's really motivated and wants me to help her since I'm always going to the gym. Not really rich, so we can't buy gazillion bottles of supplements either....
she has cut out sodas and stuff like BK/Mc Donalds (only gets the salads from there) for the most part, and only drinks water/cranberry juice/ice tea if we go out somewhere.

Thanks in advance!

Save your money on fat loss sups. If she doesn't have time to work out and she want's to loose weight just modify her diet. Eat low Sat. fat. I notice you said she drinks juice, I would watch out a lot of juice is only 20% juice and high in sugar. If you go to the gym a lot then you probaly know something about it. if she's a beginner start her off light. Is she completely new to the gym scene? At her height 110 is to low.

hey there,

i know it can be tough to fit workouts into a busy schedule, and im glad you are going to start some cardio. high intensity interval training will be the best bet for a weight/fat loss. working out in the lower "fat burning" zone is good, but high intensity work will keep your body burning fat for a longer period of time. weight training is a must. if shes short on time, cut a few cardio sessions and fit in some weight training. she can do the same stuff as you. muscle burns fat so the more she builds the more fat she burns just sittin there. (im sure you probably know this already so anyways...)

since she doesnt have a lot of time for workouts, diet is going to be super important if she really wants to succeed. if she can afford it, a whey protein sup would be great. they are quick and easy and great for u. some other relatively inexpensive ideas include cans of tuna, egg whites, oatmeal, low fat cottage cheese, sweet potoatoes, peanut butter. she needs to teach herself that food is not a reward, but a daily necessity, like shower or something.

last year at this time i was 155lbs at 5'8". using the guide posted here: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=290201 i lost over 25 lbs. but i was serious and strict for the first 5 months. i would recommend keeping a food journal if she can. but if she doesnt have the time, have her make a list of balanced meals that are around 200-250 cals each, and she can eat 6-8 of them spread out over the day.

good luck!

ps 110 lbs at 5'8"? she must have really tiny bones...i dont think that is a healthy weight either so don't let her set a goal for it! :)

I would just have her walk (if time allows between classes) from place to place. If she did that for atleast 20- 30 minutes each day she could get her cardio in that way. Also, in her room 3 nights a week have her do little bodyweight exercises before going to bed. Shoulder, tricep, and bicep exercises with soup cans. Or just anything for 15 minutes or so. Little things like steps instead of elavators. Parking her car further away from her destination. Walk instead of drive. FRUITS are great snacks. If she cuts back and gets even a little more exercise then she will lose weight but I don't think she should lose any more then 20 lbs.

Thanks for the advice folks. I'm not really knowledgeable about fat/weight loss as that was never my issue when I was starting out ( I was on the opposite end of the scale). Her goal is to get back to somewhere around 125-130 and stay there. I'm just worried about her staying consistent...if finals come up, or there's a hectic day at work, etc... I KNOW that she won't do any cardio/workouts that day; her priorities are somewhat different right now (yes I know, her helath should be #1 concern, but she's stubborn and won't listen).

Here's the update folks:

The above mentioned GF and I broke up a while ago, but we're still friends so I was still helping her with advice and motivation..
She started about 2 months ago and is down to 140 already...20 pounds in 2 months all due to attending the gym about 4 days a week and moderating her diet.
Since I only see her maybe once every 2 weeks o so, the changes are more apparent. She lost most of her belly fat and doesn't have that michelin(wo)man look anymore.

Thanks a lot for the given advice:)

What was her gym routine? How long did she work out? Her diet? Any supplements? Sorry!

Diet. Diet. Diet. Diet.

Buy Tupperware, pack for 5-7 meals a day, carry cooler.

Sounds silly, but if she can carry a book bag to class, she can add a small cooler.
