Seems to me that you get a better ROM by standing.

So far I've been doing my laterals on an incline bench, stabilizing myself with my free arm. Is this any worse than doing them on a flat bench, lying on your free arm?

I do some of DiamondDelts shoulder routines, their great. The laying laterials feel like you are hitting them alittle differently then standing.

Big DD understands leverage disadvantage principles, and uses the lying lateral to load the lower section of the ROM that is poorly leveraged (read resisted) during standing laterals.

Also, with lying its much harder to cheat from personal experience.

When your standing you can use almost any muscle in your upper body to cheat and not even know it, when lying the only muscle really capable of contracting is the forearm and even its in a very weak position and wouldn't make much difference.

Maybe everyones different but I find that I cheat with standing ones the same way I cheat with straight bar curls, don't intend to I just do.

You should be doing the lying laterals on the floor as shown below. And they exhibit more resistance at the beginning of the movemtent which is better for bulk, instead of only at the top of the movement like conventional standing laterals do.
