how high should bar travel when doing clean grip high pulls and also snatch grip? Do you perform high pulls from the hang below the knees or any little variations like that ? What kind of reps and sets should be used for this lift?How do you know how much weight to use for these lifts/ what percentage of what max lift should you use to figure this?

I don't like high pulls personally.

They seem like a good way to develop impingement issues and/or pulling with arms.

I am not a fan of them myself, although I do them occassionally simply for the upper back work, which I now need more than I used to.

I find the need to improve technique when receiving/racking to be far more important. If I could catch what I could pull, I would be an incredibly happy guy.

pull it to about sterum height, you use as much weight as you can pull to the set height for the set ammount of sets and reps.

Is it easier to develop impingement issues with high pulls than with regular snatches/cleans? if so, why?

And if you pull with the arms its a technique issue, but i do agree, it is kind of easier to pull with the arms on a high pull than with a snatch or clean.

For the same reason upright rows can lead to impingement issues in a lot of lifters.

I'm a beginner.

Which is why I have technique issues. I avoid high pulls for the same reason I avoid the power versions of the lifts. By focusing my how high I can pull a weight, I would stand a good chance of developing bad habits.

I'm not able to get a clean pull to my sternum without using my arms or 'upright rowing' at the top of the pull. I wouldn't want to do that with a clean, so I don't want to practice it with pulls.

Lots of accomplished lifters utilize high pulls, and the power lifts with great success. I was speaking from the perspective of a beginner, with less than stellar technique.
