View Full Version : Suggestions For Next Topic Of The Week?

What do you think would make a good topic for this section? What makes a good topic?

1. Members are able to give a long and detailed answer. It can't just be a question that can accept a "yes" or "no" simple answer.

2. A question should not have an obvious answer that nobody could debate. Example: "Should you bench press if you want to build your chest?"

3. It should be a topic that many people would be interested to learn about.

Thanks for your help!

I'm at school now, so I don't have time to think a lot about this (will do later), but one thing popped into my head that I think would be a great topic.

How important is stretching before a workout?

What is an important, but overlooked nutrient in exercise?

How can you incorporate or use bodybuilding to help you with a sport?

A little weak, but I'll think of more.

Anger and hate are a big part of why i lift...It makes me forget...it balances me out...that is why i lift everyday as hard as i can and as long as i can. we all have our reasons and we all know how it makes us feel. Animosity goes through my mind when i lift....what goes through yours should be the next question.....

sounds pretty good to me. Of course not only bodybuilders go to this website, so I propose instead something like "How do you make time for your fitness goals?" I was about to put "How do you make time for your weight training goals", but then where would Matt Furey's "My products are way over priced", followers be?

or maybe something about steriods (an opinion thing)

I think this would be quite a useful topic as there has been so much speculation as to whether we should wait as little as 20 seconds to get the most out of the growth related hormones we produce or towait 120 seconds so we can get rid of the lactic acid and replace our ATP levels.....what does everyone think about that one?

I believe this topic will be highly debated, as different people propose different opinions.

Also, this topic is quite important to bodybuilding, as I believe post-workout nutrition is one of the pinnacles of bodybuilding nutrition.

how about a full analysis on habits and what causes one new years resolutioner to quit and the other to stay? why does Person A quit - is it that he/she thinks it's too hard or do you blame poor planning and goal-setting? maybe the new-found bb.com forum member (person B) was just 'better' at cardio? Why do people quit?

----------------
maybe have an article contest on Obesity that challenges the reader to go against old habits. something that makes them stop thinking "it wont happen to me" whether the 'it' is arthritis, coronary artery disease, stroke, lower back pain, or poor circulation. dont take comfort in the fact that many others are obese as well and that you kind of 'fit in' anyway. other stuff about how it's a health risk but make it a charged article and not the usual "being obese is bad."

As admin has written that " It should be a topic that many people would be interested to learn about." , I suggest we should have a discussion on benfit and power of yoga in life and bodybuilding. nowadays yoga is the buzzword.
everyone is going ot this ancient technique for fitness and relaxation tooo.
Another question that can be asked about yoga is that is yoga beneficial to bodybuilding and has it any role in recovery process of bodybuilding because yoga is said to aid in relaxation and is a great stress reliever too. can it aid in recovery process too.

How many sets and reps per body part should one do for optimal muscle gain?

Is it better to train your muscles as a group each time you lift, or individually? (EX. Only biceps one day, only back another)

Diet and fat loss pills: Are they all just caffeine?

How many days lifting and days rest is sufficient for optimal muscle growth and recovery?

For big gains fast, should one lift a short amount of time and really intense, or a longer time with moderate intensity?

Hey everybody!
I always wondered why bodybuilding is not considered to be an olympic game. Thinking of all the effort put in from many people all around the globe in bodybuilding (talking bout natural bodybuilders) , it is rather weird not to see it hand in hand with weightlifting in the games.
One thing is certain;this would be an amazing development for the sport in general.
First of all, it will help resolve some stupid conceptions and myths around the sport.
Secondly, it will promote the benefits of bodybuilding to more young people; the healthy life style and dedication to achieve a higher state of body and mind. This, to my opinion, is paramount in this day and age.
Thirdly, the people who already build their bodies will be finally recognised and respected for their lifestyle and will not anymore be thought of a s obsessed by the ignorant masses.
Fourthly, there is going to be a lot of attention by the state. This can have a lot of positives and negatives as well. The positives are:
1>More money is going to be invested in the sport.
2>The supplement industry will have to reform, dangerous or useless supps will be removed from the market.
3>Gym, equipment and supps. prices will drop.
4>Bodybuilding will probably be tought in sport's unis as a course. Personal "bodybulding orientated" trainers will appear with knowlegde in techniques, supps. and everything a bodybuilder needs to know.

There are bad sides of gov. intervention but i wont go into that cause they are outweighted by the positives in this case.

"Bodybuilding as an olympic sport" could be a good topic for next week.
Cheers!

This test was devised by Arthur Jones during his Nautilis days, then investigated by Dr Frederick Hatfield & discussed in his book "Hardcore Bodybuilding: A Scientific Approach".

The test involves finding your 1RM at compound exercises, mainly squat & bench. Workout 80% of this number, then use that weight to perform as many reps as you can with good form & without pausing.

This test was shown to determine fast gainer {scale 1-3}, Gainer & Slow Gainer {scale 1-3} depending on the reps accomplished.

Question 1: What would you consider your muscle growth to be & what level of tolerance would you consider having?

Question 2: After performing the test, to the letter, what reps did you get for SQUAT & BENCH?

PM me for answers to the test!

IS BODYBUILDING HEALTHY? Most people naturally assosiate body building with being healthy because it is a form of exercise... but is it really? Consider - the way bodybuilders drop their body fat percentage to dangerous percentages, the high fat/protein diets - that can cause health problems, the exessive abuse of steriods and growth hormone. Is it a coincidence that so many body builders gets unhealthy or even die - is it due to the lifestyle?

On the other hand, what about the psychological benifets to happiness, the increase in self-confidence and increasing exercise and is their diet really healthy or unhealthy??

Which of the two over powers the other? Is there a balance?

LOL nice, but I don't think you can write a whole page on sleep...or maybe you can

Thats a great topic!!!

It would easy to fill the page... what are techniques you could use to help you sleep? ex: herbal teas, setting the right patterns, training earlier in the day rather than night... how important is sleep? how to work around people who can't get the conventional 8 hours each night or those working the night shift... the issues of serotonin/melatonin!

Seriously, sleep is crucial, the topic is deep, and people hardly even discuss it much or give it much respect, in fact, people tend to brag about deprivation as if it were some sort of badge of honor. Sleep, like exercise and diet, requires ongoing study and adjustment.

No offense to anyone here, but the fact that some people believe that this crucial activity which comprises ONE THIRD of the SACRED GOLDEN TRIANGLE OF FITNESS could not even fill the page is the BEST proof that the topic of sleep definitely needs to be covered! :D

DSM18

if sleep doesnt fill the page, it could be a double question... sleep sex. Sex can burn calories, build huge biceps (if your woman is heavy) and if your good, sex can be the other one third of the triangle of sacred Fitness Gold!

What positions maximise muscle growth? On a swing for cardio/extra burning of calories? It can give you a huge back (rowing movement) if u like it doggy style and do it quick! Or can increase leg strength (squatting movement) if you like doing it against the wall!

Whats the best way to get big and hard? How many repititions are best for good performance? Should you try supersetting? Theres ALOT to be discussed here!

Far too many train unstructured and then they cry when "hitting a plateau", when hypertrophy and maximal strength phases are periodized intelligently athletes can progress much longer. Fatloss phases should also be integrated.
Periodized nutrition to go along with it.

Another one, paraphrased from a thread I have posted over in Nutrition:

What is the REAL, SCIENTIFIC, DOCUMENTED advantage to whole foods over more complete, engineered supplement alternatives? WHY are eggs better than whey? WHY is bran better than metamucil? WHY are greens better than vitamin supplements? What reasons, with citation of external references, other than cost, can you give, for a whole foods preference over the far more convenient alternative of supplements? Is it possible that people are just parroting what others say on the board, and/or channeling their love of taste and eating? And if there are benefits which whole foods can provide which supplements cannot, then what percentage of the diet MUST be comprised of whole food, and what percentage can be meal replacement? Finally, why do so many people state things as fact without being able to cite any actual research? ;)

This topic is of interest to me because I eat MRPs at work all day, and they actually make me feel stronger than regular food. So at this point, the common knowledge favoring "health" is at odds with "strength."

If no evidence of whole food's value beyond supplements can be given, suffice to say that this thread would benefit BB.com.

And "they're called supplements for a reason" does not qualify as scientific evidence.

3) Bodybuilding (or the lack of it) in the global media

Or perhaps just add on to that:
- How do you prepare your diet when you are on the road?
- If cooking for boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband, how do you handle the fact you must follow a strict diet?
- Way to cook a "romantic" dinner, while still following your diet.
- What entrees to look for on a menu when going out to dinner.
- Helpful tips when cooking for big events such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, ect.

List could go on forever, just use your imagination :)

the topics need to be more simple though so people can actually write persuasive articles about them... periodization is something that you dont find too many different ideas on so a lot of people could write mis-leading articles, also periodization isnt a debatable thing, it is what it is

writing "how to improve your deadlift" or "the best way to handle the off season" is much better, you could include periodization if you want to though.

This is a great topic... should be a topic of the mind - it is really important in terms of how intense you train - it can be the factor that seperates champions from unacheivers. There hasnt been a topic on the mind yet, yet it plays one of the strongest, if not the strongest role in determining how far you push yourself!

THings here could be - people always say you have to make sure your mind is right - what role does the mind play? what can you do to acheive a positive mentality?

Also, people always say stick to the basics, to just include mainly compound movements, with maybe a few specific exercises. Then there are those that stress that you should hit the muscle from as many different angles which require you to do more highly specific, isolation exercises. Which do you think is better at acheiving a Mr. Olympia body?

As someone else suggested - How can you get great arm development - ie: volume? any tips? training methods? sample workouts!

Or, create the best workout. Because there is no BEST workout, for ex: for high volume and low volume can work, set specific guidelines such as Create a workout with 20 sets for chest and back each, each exercise has to have 3 sets. Just a few ideas.

Yeah, I can see why. Derek Charlebois and the Marc from SciViation made good results from it, and Quincy Taylor is shaping up nicely with his XTend program (got o sciviation.com)

you could do it if you worked hard at TOTOW for a feew weeks

i think after this a good idea would be to truly go through the implications of why certains supps r regarded as not safe to different age groups and actual scientific notes to show if the company isnt only trying to cover its ass i would enjoy that..i mean ok hormones would be unsafe as teens are stil lgorwing and have enough test in bodies for one certain steroid shot cant remember properly but yea!?

If you could only do one thing for the rest of your life to stay lean would you lift only, cardio only or diet only? Remember..... you can only do one thing. This isn't a preference thing like....I hate cardio but what do you actually feel works the best?

Dallas68
09-04-2005, 02:49 AM
good idea myself personally would probably diet i love food, but then there is lifting which is damn fun but of course then you wouldnt have fuel for your body if you didnt diet properly lol

Don't know if this topic meets the criteria set forth for the subject of the week??

Dallas68
09-14-2005, 02:23 PM
that seems like a good idea GM i would most certainly have learnt more exercises and eating cleaner but anyway thats a good idea personally

im not writing this TOTW due to school work and friends on weekends lol just decided to state that and as well as good luck to the guys who win this week i will read avidly as always!! and will try for next week and hopefully come in sliced, diced, chopped, barbequed, chiselled, shredded, cut, minced lol :p u get the idea.......

but as for now good luck ppl..... may the force be with you!

and maybe an idea is to see what exactly makes us bodybuilders so different?

example my friend(s) put me down by saying well ur going to just be a freak! who wants to look like that? dumb** they dont understand the joy of lifting 15 pounds more on preacher curl squatting a measly 10 pounds more its the place i want to be if some questions and science can be asked that would be great to do! i remember as a very young strapping lad i was small (before i got fat as u ppl have read in past totw of mine) and id look and say one day ill be big and have big muscles (lol) and now im alright still wanna get bigger and more defined anyway thats my story........

and maybe ppl can explain if our brains are different or if some reactors make us enjoy weights more?

peace out!

As bodybuilders we constantly have to strive to catch our next meal at the alocated time. So it could also affect our social lifes. Soon we realise that we are losers that stick in the gym and stay home to eat.

So what should a bodybuilder do to avoid falling into this trap.

This should be question for this week

1) Are bodybuilders able to lead a normal family life?
2) Should bodybuilders use their fame to promote political / social standpoints?
3) Would you (as a bodybuilder) permit your image to be used in a campaign for something that you opposed?

"The camera never lies" according to the song from Bucks' Fizz in 1981, but with the proflieration of faceless pics online is that the case these days? Do you believe any of the pics you see online as being of the person who posts them? Should faceless pics be banned? And what means of ID would you require before believing a pic to be from that person, a newspaper with the date or would a posing video be better?

Na. Faceless pics = privacy. Some people dont want their friends/family seeing them posing with their shirts off.

Is it just me or are the TOTWs starting to become a bit repetitive. And I wonder if many writers are starting to wonder if the effort they need to put in is worth the prize.

Take Week 46. The three sub-topics have already been covered as individual topics in other TOTWs (best routine for gaining mass, best diet for mass, supplements for mass). Hats off to anyone who enters, but how many other ppl couldn't be bothered to write the 3000+ words required? TOTW used to be about quality, not quantity.

Bodybilding, sport, performance art, science or combination?

Bodybilders that do it to be healthy and those that ruin their health to do it, why? Can they all be part of the same sport?

Premise - Bodybuilding can benefit atheltes in other sports.

question - Can cross training in other sports benefit the bodybuilder?

Which sport(s) is(are) best to cross train in?
What is the optimum schedule for dovetailing cross-training

On the natural vs real world pro debate - If the top IFBB pros could be competitive without gear, would they still use it? why

Would you if it was still legal? why or why not?

Would you follow ifbb if it was strictly drug tested and natural? why or why not?

Bonus question - If you could have the arms of Hackenshmidt, the abs of Aston, the legs of Sandow, and the back chest and forearms of Thomas Inch on your own, would you ever touch gear, legal or otherwise? Why?

I think that a discussion on the correct ratio of proteins carbs and fat would be a great topic of the week. We see all these great ripped bodybuilders touting different ratios, with the benefits of each.

Sub questions could be:

Best ratio for mass gain

Best ration for weight loss

What do you think?

What formulas would you like to see supplement companies come out with?

From being on a budget, to having an all-in-one luxury supplement, to convenience, we've all wished we could design our own supplement at some point.

Is your supplement(s) designed for cutting, bulking, overall health, or something else?

How much would your supplement(s) cost?

Just my two cents. One of the main reasons that i got into bbing was my love of comic superheroes, as a kid {captain america is my fav}. With the rash of comics being made into movies recently, why arent bodybuilders being considered for the parts. After seeing previews for the next superman movie and the no name, no physique actor playing him, just doesnt seem right. Am i the only one who would love to see Lee Priest as Wolverine in the Xmen movie or Gunter as the Incredible Hulk?

We always talk about if genetics plays a role in making gains or loosing fat, but we never talk about how an ectomorph or mesomorph should over come their genetic disadvantages.

What is the difference between an ectomorph and mesomorph's diet, way of training, and supplementation.

it could even be separted into two weeks, one for ectomorph and one for mesomorph

P.S. endomorphs are lucky!
