Introduction
cksewjmh8hM
Over the past few years I have grown a strong affinity towards Designer Supplements for numerous reasons. As you know, I respect science based formulation above all regardless of who markets the product and am drawn like a moth to a flame to innovation.
I’ll be honest, I’ve hung out with these guys and have even gotten pretty damn wasted with them. I’ve never song a duet with a man or rapped at a Japanese restaurant until we chilled at the Arnold Classic this past March. All in all, despite some friendly disagreements or flat out battles (lmao) I do see to eye to eye with the Designer crew and have all the respect in the world for them and the vision of their product line.
I decided to review the new ActivTte Xtreme and Lean Xtreme based on my confidence in Matt Cahill’s designs. I had the fortunate experience of meeting him and his wonderful wife Melissa a few weeks ago. Matt is one smart mother****er to put it bluntly and I trust his expertise as well the claims made for the products in his line.
As some of you know, I’m currently cutting to walk on stage this fall for my first natural bodybuilding show. I had a failed attempt last year after suffering a broken tailbone which greatly limited my leg training. Obviously, when making choices in supplementation at this point in my prep I’m not taking chances. I make my choices based on sound formulation and not the moronic broscience we see perpetuated daily that infests our forum community and defames the supplement industry’s image among the masses.
Fortunately, Designer Supplements has given me full reign to review this product which means I’ll be 100% honest. For some of you that know my history here, I don’t bull**** on reviews and if a product sucks or is mislabeled I’ll let it be known.
I’d like to thank both Designer Supplements and Gaspari Nutrition for sponsoring this log. I’d also like to thank Doug Miller from Core Nutritionals for granting me permission to review Core ABC as well. Just to quell any suspicions, all products were purchased by me except for those provided by Gaspari Nutrition and Designer Supplements.

Diet
At present I’m following a modified carb cycling nutritional protocol. Essentially, on off days I’m eating about 2600 calories with no carbs, two days I’m eating really low carbs (120 grams) at around 3200 calories, and two moderate days (200 grams) at around 3000 calories. Yes, there is a rhyme and reason for this but unfortunately I won’t be posting the exact meal layout but will be posting my macro break down to assist any of you interested.
Here is my shopping list and the only foods I keep in my house:
Chicken
Tilapia
Eggs
Beef Tenderloin
Spinach
Broccoli
Trader Joe’s Cashew & Macadamia Nut Butter
Raw Almonds
Diet Dr. Pepper
Crystal Lite
Starbuck’s Coffee
Quaker Oats
Training Protocol
At present I am training by instinct. I don’t plan my workouts before getting to the gym and only stick to my training split. Some days you will see some heavy power lifting others you will see insane giant set shock training. I keep it loose and listen to what my body is telling me. Since recovery is limited I do what my body tells me but I assure you I am giving 110% every day.
As far as cardio is concerned, I am only doing 1 hour of brisk walking in the mornings. I might add some occasional HIT sessions post workout to up the metabolism a bit but I don’t follow anything strict. Once again, I listen to my body.
Current training split:
Day 1: .................................................. .....................Quads, hams, calves
Day 2: .................................................. ......................Chest, Triceps, Abs
Day 3: .................................................. ................................................Of f
Day 4. .................................................. .............................Back, Bi's, Abs
Day 5: .................................................. ...................Quads, Hams, Calves
Day 6 : Shoulders, Upperback/Traps, Arms (3 sets each supersetted)
Day 7: .................................................. ................................................Of f
Rules for My Log
There are none. I gladly invite anyone to ask any variety of questions because I do like these logs to be educational. You can spam, joke around, or give me advice. Just don’t be a punk.

Hey Des, I'll definitely be following along for this one. The Activate Xtreme looked like a great formula. I was certainly curious about this one. I plan on giving this one a run sometime. For the record, I like DS myself...their science doesn't seem like marketing jargon to cover up lack of actual quality. DS makes supps that work and are backed by credible scientific sources and knowledge. Good luck on this one bud....I'll be paying attention.

I think it only comes in grape but it is damn good for a BCAA product.
Hey man, quick question about the Core Nutritionals ABC. I know that the serving size of 2 scoops has 10 grams of BCAAs. Do you just use 2 scoops or do you use a larger serving to get more BCAAs? It looks like an awsome product and a tremendous value. I just wondered about the serving size you were using.

Discussion
OMFG it was the first day and I didn't notice anything!!! WTF! LOL..no **** sherlock. Most supplements in this genre you aren't supposed to feel any real effects the first day. If you do its called placebo or more commonly known here as BROCEBO.
Since I don't have much to be negative about today or positive for that matter I'll show you my basic diet set up and how I'll be taking my supplements.
Meal 1: Protein
Meal 2: Protien + Carbs
Supps: 1 Thyrotab, 1 Lean Xtreme, 2 ActivaTe, 1 Twinlab Daily One
Meal 3: Protien + Fat
Meal 4: Protein + Fat
Supps: 1 Thyrotab, 1 Lean Xtreme, 2 ActivaTe
Meal 5: SizeON + Core ABC
Meal 6: Protein + Fat
Meal 7: Protein + Carbs
Supps: 1 Thyrotab, 1 Lean Xtreme, 2 ActivaTe
Meal 8: Protein + Fat
I should probably mention a lot of the carb I'm getting are from vegetable/nut sources. I am counting them in my totals. Since I am very carb sensitive I feel this approach is best for my which could quite obviously not be for you. While carbs aren't listed with every meal there a just a few.
Meal 1 is essentially just a scoop of protein powder before cardio. Since it is a long session I do this just get something in my system to attenuate any potential catabolism that set in during the night. I really am a natural and just don't say so to market my supplements I need to be careful about burning up too much muscle so truly fasted cardio is out of the question for me.

J/K bro....We don't want to hear about any brocebo effects, especially from a top respected member...lol. BTW...kick ass workout man, I really like how you switch it up, not only routine wise, but during each workout. It might be something I try myself because it looks interesting. As far as effects go....I don't expect to hear anything on that end until about after 10 days to 2 weeks and that could possibly be premature, but everyone is different so lets see how it rolls for you.

Am I late? Per your 'butter' issue; check out at Trader Joe's Sunflower Seed Butter... delicious, much cheaper than almond butter, and perfect to fit the macros you're looking for (same ones you set me up with). Also if bland taste etc is an issue for you with your meals check out Walden Farms zero calorie dressings and bbq sauces.
As for your log. The Core products (checked out the site) look very solid all around and ABC definitely raised an eyebrow but I'm curious to find out how you'd feel about taking something like that during workout as opposed to myself where I've read you're supposed to take something like beta alanine pre and post and I take something like xtend during my workout.
Subbed and a solid 5 stars as always.

Nah but I posted it here awhile back:
Yes they (AA + TA) would. It appears exogenous AA activates PPAR alpha as does tetradecylthioacetic acid. This could explain why their is a drop in BF% for some people using X Factor...I could be wrong though, but probably not. :)
(concering conflicts)
You might think this because tetradecylthioacetic acid has shown to drop levels of gamma linoleic acid which is an AA precursor. However, it also raises dihomo-gamma-linoleic acid which is also a precursor to AA. Keep in mind tetradecylthioacetic acid increases both delta 5 and delta 6 desaturases which catalyze AA. Since both the rate determining desaturases and intermediate are increased I think it's safe to say TTA actually increases AA endogenously at least in rats.
In essense, it might be wise to start with a low dose of AA if wanting to use TTA because TTA will also increase both mitochondrial and peroxisomal beta-oxidation which would include omega threes. This obviously would enhance the effects of AA as well.
More and more I'm impressed with tetradecylthioacetic acid with every study I read. Hopefully, it's not turned into a drug so we can enjoy it in our supplements without a perscription.
You can read the full text study from Artherosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology and easily discern that tetradecylthioacetic acid will not interfere with cyclooxygenase which is why some compounds with both antioxidant AND anti-inflammatory are to be avoided. If anything the synergy between TTA and AA will be strong.

I wish I could GET my traps to respond to something. I usually hit them with BB and DB shrugs, and follow it up with upright rows. They just won't seem to get bigger. I could show you a pic to display what I mean, but I don't want to start throwing pics around in your log. Any tips?

One mistake I see people doing is rolling their shoulders. One good technique I recommend is to lean your head forward a bit so you can get a tighter contraction when shrugging straight up and down.
I also noticed that some feel you need to pound these with heavy weights which usually leads to low volume training. I always suggest for those with lagging traps to up the volume. I great method is dropsetting your highest weight with dumbells all the way down to let's say 20lbs. Here's an example:
100lb'ers x 12
drop
90lb'ers x 12
drop
80lb'ers x failure
drop
70lb'ers x failure
drop
60lb'ers x failure
etc, etc, etc
That will surely stimulate the muscle and put the hurt on you. :)

I also noticed that some feel you need to pound these with heavy weights which usually leads to low volume training. I always suggest for those with lagging traps to up the volume. I great method is dropsetting your highest weight with dumbells all the way down to let's say 20lbs.
Welp, there's the problem. I always roll them, and I'm not sure where I picked up the habit. Also, do you recommend letting the weight hang down as low as possible. i.e., almost leaning forward so you get maximum stretch, or not? I love me some dropsets, and I have traps tomorrow, so I'll definitely give the almost run the rack routine a try on 'em. Thanks, bro :D

I lean over slightly and do get a full stretch on the negative. I also recommend not keeping your arms straight using dumbells and as you contract up to bend your elbows a bit to force more of a contraction. It helps stimulate more of the lower fibers too. Running the rack is fun but pretty harsh. Have fun. :)

I always scratch my head when I see people rolling their shoulders. Try seated heavy dumbbell shrugs also ncangey... they'll stretch the hell out of your traps and you can't cheat.

That will surely stimulate the muscle and put the hurt on you. :)

Add Hup A to the piracetam for a real treat. :)
I've never tried pharm grade stims, but a couple caps of our new stim has a feel VERY similar to Scorch + Hup A + Piracetam, even though the ingredients are vastly different.
Good info on the shrugs too, may have to switch things up a bit when I've got more time to do more than maintenance work.

EAA's have their place in nutrition except for supplemental EAA formulas are ALL incomplete lacking tryptophan. Now when you really get down to what you need it is primarily BCAA's and not EAA's while you workout. Most of the studies using EAA's also used carbs as well and how many EAA formulas have carbs?
The purpose of using BCAA's while you workout and by far the most effective reasoning in doing so is because of BCAA oxidation. They are proven beneficial for decreasing exercise-induced muscle damage and promoting muscle-protein synthesis.
EAA formulas that contain arginine and lack tryptophan are laughable. Why? Arginine is only considered an EAA in infants and toddlers as it is conditional based on age. Therefore anyone including it in an adult formula is a ****ing idiot.
Frankly, CORE has what you need, tastes good, is dosed correctly, and let's you know exactly how much BCAA's you are getting. The one thing people don't get is that megadosing can cause gluconeogenesis. That's not good while you are trying to cut.

damn, what is your defintion of ''megadosing''? I guess iv been taking WAY too much, becaues I was taking roughly 25g Leucine, 9g Isoleucine, and 9g valine. ( 4 scoops xtend + one scoop primal EAA + 5g bulk leucine. and they were always heaping scoops.) I would mix it in a 2L bottle take that per durring and post workout. What dosing would you recomend for a bodyweight of roughly 150lb?

The poundages may seem low but volume training like this is absolute torture. I really a lot of novice trainers don't know how to properly stimulate the legs and feel pounding them with heavy low rep training will make the grow. Here's some advice, if you can't do that and have your legs engorged with blood at the end of the workout you are doing something wrong. Most likely, not enough volume.
Now I don't mean just pump. I can't get pump running up a flight of stairs. I'm talking the type of blood volum that makes you walk like you have a stick up your ass (I don't have personal experience with this) because its hard to bend your at your knees. This is when your legs are throbbing fifteen minutes after you rack the weight after you last set.
As you probably know I'm a huge advocate of giant set training as a nice shock technique. I learned this following some of Milos Sarcev's training principles from bodybuilding.com's own FitShow. I dare you to try it but just make sure you have a puke bucket close buy and someone to spot you in case you pass out. I'm being serious.

LOL...your leg workout is really similar to mine, except for leg presses. I omit leg presses because I don't have a leg press machine...I work out alone in my basement. Anyway, your damn right that volume training is absolute torture, especially on leg day, add in some cardio after a hellacious high volume leg workout and in Dave Chappelle's words..."Your F*cking Done Son." I also second your notion that you might want to make sure you have a puke bucket near by when doing this type of training because it comes in handy. So tell me Des, after that leg workout, did it feel like your legs were stuck in quicksand and when they did move they felt like jello? High Volume Leg Training + Cardio does it to me everytime...lol.

I would try switching from what ever it is youve been doing. when I was trying to get my traps bigger I switched from volume to heavy weights at lower reps (4-6 range). It helped with me.

Despite low carbs and feeling consistently flat for most of the day I have noticed some increased vascularity and fullness since the second of starting ActivaTe. It's nothing to crazy but certainly something to note. Not being a vascular person by nature I certainly do notice when my forearm veins are popping throughout the day.
I spent the entire weekend eating out of tupperware while traveling around Lincoln Park and the Gold Coast. It's always a good time to get down there but it is truly terrible not being able to eat out. Chicago deep dish pizza is certainly a treat and I've always preferred Lou Malnati's over Gino's. This is just depressing talking about this as I look at two busted chicken boobies I'm about to eat for the third time today.

Yeah, now that is really depressing....not being able to have some Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza. Thats my favorite food to treat myself to...as my bodyspace says, it is my fav cheat food. However, I'm curious though Des....have you ever had some of Giordano's Chicago Style Pizza? Gino's is pretty good and Lou Malnati's is even better I'll agree, but Giordano's is my favorite....so if you haven't had it, when you get a chance try it out....I think it is the best Chicago Style Pizza IMO, but then again...to each their own.
BTW, solid chest workout there. You've got yourself pretty disciplined on that diet. You almost gotta be sorry for the chicken, knowing its being eaten out of spite and necessity and not enjoyment...lol.
Keep up the hard work there bud, it sounds like the Activate Xtreme is going to be a real kick ass product, since it appears its kicking in fast for you, albeit the effects are minor, but at least your still noticing something...thats always a good sign. WOw Des, giordano pizza? We have giordano clothings. :p
Seems like all the good food in America is around NorthEastern states? NY area?

Well in terms of Pizza the argument is always NY style vs. Chicago... however I myself have never had deep dish pizza (ever). Neither authentic NY or Chicago. The best pizza I've ever had though is Sal's here in the Boston area hands down.
Edit - That chest and tri's workout looks like suicide.

As mentioned before, I am noticing some definite increases in vasodilation. What's intriguing about the effect is that it is not isolated to just my training sessions but rather throughout the day. It's not intense by any means but it is certainly noticeable.
Before starting this log/review I just glanced over a bunch of icariin research but do now feel compelled to actually take a closer look.

Icariin (i.e. Epimedium extract; Horny goat weed extract)
A functional pump so to speak is something I have been interested in quite a while because in case most of you don't know, high dose arginine based pumps aren't functional despite a few skewed studies which have recently been released (Campbell B et al. 2006, etc).
I wasn't expecting a heightened "pump" effect from this so beyond potential test boosting capabilities it is certainly welcomed and worth investigation. In case a lot of you don't know this, but I don't walk into many of these "reviews" knowing the detailed physiological mechanisms by which they work. I treat these as a learning experience and hope to ellucidate some of the highs or lows for you as well taking it one compound at a time.
Tomorrow night's homework will be reading the following:
That should keep me busy for a bit. By the way, if any of you out there have access to the Asian Journal Andrology please let me know. It's one of the few journals I can't access.

Even a drunkern fist fight over the better pizza huh? Those are always fun....lol. I have to admit, I've been there myself...my buddies and I always bring it up because it is just one of those funny stories that never gets old. Its like wow we really fought over who had the better pizza....alcohol you sweet bitch. Hence the reason I don't drink too much anymore...lol. Cubs Game W/ your buddies = a great time. Drinking some Captain and brews W/ your buddies = good times W/ a lot trash talking. Fighting W/ buddies over the best Chicago Style Pizza= F'ing Priceless...lmao.
Funny that you say something about the Malnati's sauce...I think its amazing myself, but the crust of Giordano's wins me over...its good **** either way. Now back to actual bodybuilding talk...lol....don't want to get too far off topic.

Now that is one ingredient I plan on doing a lot more research on. I knew about the possible effects on vasodilation, but never heard anyone speak about it until you said something. Now a question I pose to you Des, have you heard anything about Icariin being similar to rhodiola rosea? I've read some things that compare the two that say they are related in an effectual sense...they both help increase a better sense of well being and help with endurance. However, I am more curious about knowing if Icariin is classified as an adaptogen like rhodiola rosea? Just wanted to know if you could shed some light on this....

I never looked into Icariin for adaptogen properties. Ill have to go back through the studies and see if there is any mention of it. They are in the formula for 2 totally different effects. Icariin to mimic testosterone and increase sex drive and Rhodiola just as an adaptogen.

I don't concern myself much bioavailabity concerns when it comes to wholefood protein sources or protein powder for that matter. When you are hypocaloric your body wants to absorb as much as possible and using quality enzymes certainly helps.

Deserusan I was wondering what are the ATG Pulse Squats?
I'll use Coleman squat style as an example. You'll notice he goes ATG and uses a abbreviated motion which ellicits constant tension on the hamstrings, quads, glutes, etc. When I do my own version of a pulse squat I only come up right above parallel. This keep a lot of tension on the full ham/glute region as well as causing an extreme stretch in the quads at the full negative position.
This really brings out the lower quad and hamstrings. People who come all the way up on their squats are selling themselves short. Yes, you can probably lift more weight, but the weight isn't doing much for your leg development.
I throw this technique in everyonce in while once my legs are pretty exhausted. It really fries them.

yeah, pulse squats are freaking hard, i mix em into my routine sometimes too. Usually end up locking out my knees for last one or two reps tho cause im so freaking exausted :/
kinda confused tho when you say that "ppl who come up all the way are selling themselfves short" and that "the weight isnt doing much for your leg development" but then you go on to say that you only throw it into your routine every once in a while? If they are so much better than regular squats why dont you always incorporate them?
Thanks

I never lock out and always use the motion Coleman is using in the vid. The ATG pulse squating I described is just abbreviating the movement even more to isolate a certain region of the leg. Instead of coming up 3/4 of the way you are coming up 4/7 of the way. :)
Give both techniques a shot and trust me when I say your legs will grow. It might be a shot to the ego at first having to drop the weight, but your legs will explode.

Be a responsible citizen and use an earpiece when operating an automobile. Some dumbass hit me going 35-40mph while at a stop light. Why? She was screwing around on her cellphone. Luckily my short stay in the hospital didn't reveal any injuries but I still need to follow up later this week.
Essentially, I was stretching my legs and arms by pushing myself against the seat which saved me from any whiplash or hitting the steering wheel/windshield. However, getting blasted by the airbag wasn't the greatest experience nor was having my car totaled. On the upside I have GREAT insurance as does the dumb twat who hit me. I'm also thankful I walked away from this unscathed. Lift your weights! :)

Today's training session was intense. I walked to the gym and the temperature was a humid 94 degrees. My muscles were fairly primed after my first few warm-up sets so I decided lift a bit heavier then I have been as of late.
I also trained a little bit earlier in the day so I ran into a few chaps I haven't seen in awhile who all commented on how much weight I've lost. All together I've lost about 30lbs since the Arnold Classic in March. Even better, I haven't lost much muscle which has been my goal all along.
Right after I finish this I'll be writing another letter to Bruce K so if anyone has anything they would like to say to him just PM it to me or post it here and I'll print it out. He's doing as well as he can be given the current circumstances and still has a great sense of humour displayed in his writing.
Oh yeah, so back to the log..lol. I have been pouring over a lot of the literature on icariin and must say I am impressed. Typically, when doing these logs I gradually build up my own knowledge on the ingredients at hand and then share my thoughts with you. Don't worry as this is coming soon. I just want to make sure I'm not experiencing any brocebo.
What I can say is that I'm definately experiencing some the same effects I did while on Halodrol Liquigels but a bit sooner. This would include alpha maleness (if that's a word) and some aggressive tendencies which are beyond my typical ******* nature. The muscle fullness, increased vascularty, and general "on" feeling are quite apparent.
