I said, I have to take my "bootaaaay" more seriously...I got called out by this dude for having cellulite on my bum, so it inspired me! True story. I don't think he mean't any malice, he just told the truth! I'm gonna be squatting and lunging and deadlifting my ass off. Hopefully, in the next couple of months...my booty will be totally resculpted!:)

Ah.......I think a high percentage of EVERYBODY has some form of cellulite to some extent. I don't mind it because with cellulite comes the curves

I've gotten as high as 135lbs but I usually do around 115lbs so I can really focus on getting low. Just do as high of weight as you feel comfortable. I'd suggest 1 WU with the bar + 4 sets (12, 10, 8, 6) increasing the weight as you go. If you get to 6 reps but it's still easy, increase your weight next time! I've only been lifting for about 2 months and my quads have come in quite nicely using this method!

at first it was a spoon pic with three spoons.
and then, later, a spoon pic with my username and the date written on a piece of paper. No one asked for that one, it was just after the stella summers incident when everyone was freaking out about which girls in the misc were actually girls :o and I didn't want people to think I'm a guy.
but I don't have pictures in my profile or avatar, and I don't post in the misc frequently enough for people to recognize me, so people don't really call me out on anything.

Welcome Aussie
Start slow .......3-4 sets of atg (ass to ground) squats using light weights and getting the feel of the exercise
Generally squatting deeper as opposed to stopping where your legs are parallel to the ground brings in more of the glutes

Hey hun! I definitely know the feeling of just starting out, so I'm more than happy to offer a lending hand!
If you go here: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.htm you'll find descriptions of most of the exercises we talk about on this thread. And the best part is that they also have videos in case you want to see the exercise in action!
Now for some detailed definitions:
ATG Squats - "Ass To Grass" squats is quite literal. When squatting, it's best to go AT LEAST deep enough that your thighs are parallel to the ground. The lower, the better (trust me, you'll feel it in the quads and glutes if you're doing it right). It doesn't matter if you can squat 300lbs if you're only getting three inches down. That doesn't count! Lower your weights until your form is perfected and only then start pushing yourself with heavier weights! Remember to ask someone to spot you as you progress with new weights!
Speaking of heavier weights...always warm up with some light cardio and do one set of any exercise (especially in the beginner stage) with light weight. But then really push yourself with the heavier weights! As a girl, you're not going to get all big and muscle-ly unless your taking steriods, were born a man, or have been lifting heavy ass weights with a very clean, high protein diet for years! Don't be afraid of the squat rack with that daunting barbell! ;)
Romanian vs. Sumo: basically, every time you hear Sumo, think of Sumo wrestlers' stances-WIDE. So when I say you do a sumo squat or deadlift, you know that your feet should be further than shoulder width apart. Romanian is the opposite. Your feet are closer together! Easy as pie!
I had also mentioned plyometrics. You can pretty much find a million youtube videos on the subject. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U89oPkZla5I
My one warning is to treat this workout the same as if you were doing a leg workout in the gym. So that means you should put at least 3 days between plyos and lifting! And ease into plyo training. Many athletes have a hard time with it, so us regular 'ol gym-goers need to be especially careful.
Yeah, I think that pretty much covers it. And if anyone here wants to correct me on something, go right ahead! Having tons of opinions is a good thing that helps you adjust according to YOUR needs!

Plyometrics is a type of exercise training designed to produce fast, powerful movements, and improve the functions of the nervous system, generally for the purpose of improving performance in a specific sport. Plyometric movements, in which a muscle is loaded and then contracted in rapid sequence, use the strength, elasticity and innervation of muscle and surrounding tissues to jump higher, run faster, throw farther, or hit harder, depending on the desired training goal.

I find that dynamic warm ups work much better and are completely functional too.
I perform these dynamic warm up exercises before a workout:
X-band Walk 12/side
Supine Bridge 1x12
Birddog 8/side
Warrior Lunge Static Stretch 15s/side
Seated 90/90 Static Stretch 15s/side
Knee pull walk
Pull-Back Butt Kick 5/side
Cradle Walk 5/side
Overhead Lunge Walks 5/side
Walking Spidermans 5/side
Side to side leg swings 10/side
Wall Ankle Mobilizations 8/side
Squat to stand 10
Split-Stance Broomstick Pec Mobilizations 8/side
Scapula push ups 15
This warm up takes about 10 minutes and if performed correctly will more than warm you up and make sure you do not injure yourself.
I also do the following warm up:
Olympic barbell - 5 reps
*Perform the next 5 rep warm up set with 50 pounds on the bar and keep adding 50 pounds to each successive warm up set until I get to the weight I plan to use for my first set.
I have not had any injuries since using this protocol.

I'm totally in. I finally feel like I'm getting my old energy and motivation back, and I'm ready for some crazy squats! I didn't go too hardcore last night, since I'm just getting back into seriously dedicating myself to the weights, but I can feel it today for sure.

I've taken her several times to the gym, but she freaks out. She just doesn't like to be around other people while she exercises. I have a powerblock set at home, and a bench that will incline and lay flat, so we're already pretty much set up for just about everything.
But we still must go to the gym for the all important squat. I try to tell her it's no big deal, just ignore them. I go to the free gym at my apartment complex, and 90% of the people hover around the bench press. The squat rack is almost always free.

Ok. Maybe on squat day you can try to figure out when the gym is the least crowded? I think bodyweight exercises are a good start, but using weights is better. I'm assuming she's using weights when she works other parts of her body - so I would just try to emphasize consistency throughout her workout for her body to get/maintain balance. Hopefully she'll get comfortable :)

Actually there's a towel whipping gauntlet you have to run, you can repeatedly run if you choose, but after run #3 we switch to whips and wet handed slaps.

Stay with her in the gym and keep talking to her, if you can keep her focused on you and not the people around her some of the paranoia and self consciousness will fall off, in time she'll be so used to it they wont even phase her. The gym phobia is still strong with her, I've kinda given up on it. I did buy her a kettlebell though and she loves swinging and squatting it. I hope that's almost as good at least.
Never give up man, you can do a lot at home but you'll never be able to stock the variety of equipment a gym maintains and there is something innate in the environment that once you get her past the self consciousness will overtake her if she has a fitness crazy bone anywhere in her body. Remind her we're all equally imperfect and chasing a better body just like her.

If she enjoys it now, then there is hope. Try getting her in there during the slow hours, when there are very few people there. I know when I first started going to a real gym I went late in the evenings do avoid the crowds, it made it easier to focus and I didn't have to fight over the weights.

I've always had a bubble butt but before I started lifting I had that fat/(I'm embarrassed to admit...) CELLULITE at the top of my legs under my ass... and now all my squats and stiff leg dead lifts have payed off and that fat is gone, and my butt is just as bubblicious and now firmer!!!

Lol I know how that is, I used to do the same thing with one of my old jobs, I put in a lot of off the clock overtime to keep the books straight and I felt bad bailing to go to the gym, fortunately they installed a gym on sight so that eliminated that issue. Just remember school is important but you need to balance everything.

Congrats on starting again. I know it's going to be hard to start over once you've stopped. You'll probably have to gain back the strength you had before all over again and it's going to suck. But you'll see that once you've had it before, it will gain back quicker than your initial gain. Just keep your motivation up, be patient, be CONSISTENT, and you should see results soon enough :)

Everybody wants a small waist to accentuate the V-taper...but it accentuates the hips much more to me. ^

And this is yet another reason why I hate group projects. Egos take over and slow the whole thing down, people don't naturally compromise very often.

And this is yet another reason why I hate group projects. Egos take over and slow the whole thing down, people don't naturally compromise very often.

Last time I calculated my 1RM for squats it was 240 or so, but I mainly squat 200 for reps because that's all the weights I currently own lol...I'm planning to buy some more weights soon, so that number will go up! I don't know what other stats you wanted

Wow. That's pretty impressive :) Keep pushing yourself though. (not that you need me to remind you).
I would post mine but I haven't calculated my 1RM in awhile and I'm sure it probably sucks. lol. But once I do I'll share it anyways.

Thanks! I'm definitely going to keep pushing myself...I have so much muscle but it's covered under that layer of fat lol...so I know if I keep pushing the layer of fat will diminish and more muscle will come out!!!

No on your off days you're not burning as many kcals so it makes sense to pull back a bit, but how much are you cutting back realistically? I'm not sure what ATG means....but I do a lot of deep squats so I guess I would say just below parallel because I feel like it really hits the booty on the way up! I think those give me the best results

You can work past it, we all have mental blocks we have to work through. I'm going to hit the gym tonight for the first time in several months and honestly I'm scared, if I still can't put any real weight on my left shoulder I'm going to need to take it to the next level and throw down the money to see a specialist. On the positive side though I need to get out of the house and get active, I haven't done anything aside from watch tv and surf the web since my recent breakup...or rebreakup, or...hell idk. Point is that's my mental block and I'll be damned if I'm going to let it keep me on the couch!
Solid weight period esp for 132lbs! Nice lifts, remember strength is 10% physical and 90% mental. If you walk up to the bar thinking "I can't lift that" you probably never will.

For best results, I do a variety of different squats, changing the stance and angles of feet. Using lighter weight, I would go past parallel. Using heavier weight I'd go to just parallel to protect the knees. Squat tempo can be either very slow or quicker to recrute different muscle fibers.

Personally I like to use them to mix it up little. You don't really activate the stabilizer muscles but they're still effective.
I see that squat booty is looking good there btw ;)

Leg press, leg extension, hammy curl, and the glute isolator machines all hit the booty. We'll be expecting monthly picture updates ;)

ok so my squat booty sisters....my butt has definitely been getting some pump! People are noticing, yay!!!! I went to 24hr fitness and I was able to squat 225 for reps!!! It was nice! I'm loving that I'm getting stronger! Happy New Year!!!!

So, I FINALLY added some squats to my leg routine. I love them and it always makes me feel powerful (even doing a weak 60 lbs).
I actually had to ask a guy to help spot for me bc I could only get it about 85% over my head and onto my shoulders :( but he was really kind and I'm sure you guys would agree that he was eye candy(sorry ladies, no pics) lol.
Just thought I'd share my little bit of progress with you guys. Hope your training is going well :)
