OK this might sound stupid and I ve been lifting for a while, I should already have known this.
BUt my question is,
When doing squats, do you girls squat and then come all the way up or keep that tension in there until you are done with all your reps and only finally relax after the last rep?
Also.... So you exhale when your muscles are contracted and inhale when you come up..Did I get this right?

I come all the way up for one full rep. I exhale as I go down and inhale as I come back up. (just the way I do things, doesn't mean it's perfect...)

I unrack the weight, take a full breath and hold it in, squat a full rep squeezing my abs tight, release the breath once I am standing upright again, pause to stabilise, take another breath and repeat.
Having a stomach full of air acts like a spring, allowing me to squat heavier and with better form.

Aarrg, did something to my upper ham/glute area just by walking around the mall! 4 days after a really tough leg workout that left me feeling fatigued, but fine! It sucks as I had to skip legs this week. I swear I can feel my legs and butt deflating like a balloon with a slow leak :(

And I'm in a room half-full of athletes and lifters! Craziness! The guy who finally demonstrated did an okay job. But the guy who demonstrated the back squat was like the poster child for what NOT to do- held the bar on his neck, looked down, knees over the toes, and his heels came off the ground- and the teacher didn't say anything!
What is this world coming to when people in this type of class can't squat properly?!?!?

Ha! Well if the teacher didn't correct them then you have your answer. Maybe even teachers, trainers, and coaches are too intimidated to correct, especially on squats. If people do them continually wrong, then it's gotta hurt, they stop doing them, and say things like it's bad for the knees.
I still think a lot men are wussies when it comes to working legs. They just can't handle the sore muscles and effort.

i feel i have good form when i squat but i always find myself out of breath when i'm done a set and rest for longer than necessary for my muscles, just to normalize my breathing. i've always known i have to work on focusing and breathing steadily but wasn't really sure how

ok i saw the video on how to do these but since i am trying to firm up my booty then would these help? since someone said that these actaully added inches to thier butt..... i am trying to loose inches not gain them.... and i love squats and lunges but it is just more comfortable for me to spread my legs out a little farther when i do them..on another thought......is it just me or is a sore booty just about the greatest feeling in the whole world? you know after you had a great workout the day before and you are like ooooo that is sore...mmmm can't wait to do it again???

Well, losing inches will require diet and cardio. However, I think you should still continue to do squats because once you lose the fat inches, your butt will be perky and firm underneath. Also, increasing muscle mass increases your metabolism. It's a win-win situation since you already love the feeling of soreness on your rump. :) I love that feeling too.

since this is squat central :) i thought i'd ask does anyone ever have cracking or popping in thier knees? i never did until i took 2 months off and now it is awful...no pain but just noise...is it because i am getting old? or did i squat too heavy over the summer? will this mabey go away if i just squat through it/ could i make it worse? i sometimes have images of my knees just breaking off...i am a little dramatic but i have been squating less because of my concern.... any thoughts?

From what I have read and heard a popping sound is fine as long as it is not accompanied by pain. If it hurts than that is a signal that there is something wrong and you should stop.
I snap crackle and pop just moving around, even my toes pop, and it has been that way since I can remember. So I don't think that it is likely that age has much to do with it.

Resting between sets to get your breath back, especially on squats, is important. The whole thing of counting seconds between sets it TOTALLY over rated. Rest as long as you need to so you can give your best performance for the next set. If you start the next set before you regain your breath, you will rob yourself of adequate muscular stimulation in the following sets and THAT will slow down your gains.

Unfortunatly there's no barbell in my gym. How do I try these with dumbells? Do I hold them down at my sides or up at my shoulders? Cuz like if I held them down by my sides wouldn't the weight not really be doing anything?

Hold them by your sides. If you try holding them at your shoulders, you won't be able to use enough weight to make them productive for your legs.
It doesn't matter where the weight is centred, you'll still be working your legs and glutes.

I don?t have a big head or anything.,.I swear! Especially since I?ve had a baby since then and weight about 30# more now?but the booty is still alive and kicking!

I cannot tell you how awesome it is that you started this sorority! I mean not everyone has been especially appreciative of the booty but it feels good to have it celebrated and makes me want to work even harder on those squats!!!

I'm trying an experiment right now that takes this concept right to the other end of the extreme. I am now doing squats with my sets spaced HOURS apart. I realise not everyone has the time or equipment to do this but since I work from home and my gym is in my home, I figured why not give it a shot and see what happens. This has given me considerable flexibility and freedom with my time management and allows me to push MUCH harder each set. This means the total amount of weight moved on any given day is significantly greater.
My theory is that more total work = greater muscular and neurological adaptation. Hopefully the results reflect this. :)

I just bought a leg press!!! Got a great deal, $400 and it comes with 270lbs of weights, as well as a tree for them!
I pick it up next week, but won't be able to use it till June - current house has NO room to even store it, so we're taking it directly to the new house.
Still, very excited. One of my knees has been giving me a VERY difficult time with squats, so I've had to pretty much lay off them altogether. The same problem isn't nearly as bothersome with leg press, though. Working on the leg press will likely help rehab the knee, too.
The leg press was the ONLY thing I missed about the gym I just left! Wooo!!! So excited!!!!

Today was leg/glute day. Squats, lunges and deads! I'm working hard to get back what I've lost lately. I haven't been around much... or sady, working out much either. My hubby just had back surgery (very long story). My workouts have been sporadic since around the holiday's due to his back being so bad I was having to pick up all his work around the house, plus working more hours to pay the bills. But on my Birthday I said enough is enough and I did a great leg workout. I remember coming out of my back porch (where my gym is) and saying to hubby "warning, I will not be able to walk tommorow." It was a great birthday! :D

I actually prefer a barbell vs. a machine - the range of motion feels more natural.
I used to use a machine, but since I've switched to mainly free weights, it just feels awkward now.

I hate to admit this but I can't do a proper squat without a machine. My tendons are so short my heels pop up if I go all the way down. If I try to keep my heels down I fall on my a**. Funny, yes. Effective, no.

I'll admit it took me a while to get proper form down, the heel thing got me too - have you tried adjusting your stance?

I've really played around with my stance. Tried going wide. Turning toes out more etc. I'm hoping if I keep squatting my heels will one day magically stay down.

Are you doing any calf and hamstring stretches? That may help, as well.

I've been trying to get better with that too. Once upon a time i used to take pilates pretty regularly and it did kick my ass but on the same token, it did help me with my workouts more as i learned how to breathe, tighten my abs during certain exercises, etc
I am stretching more but i think i'll go back to doing pilates at least once a week - to get back to that.

Just bring her over there and teach her. If she can squat 45+ with dumbells or the smith machine, it's time to teach her to do barbell squat. Most will be glad you did, once they see how their butt looks. In fact, tell her this is the best exercise to get a round shapley bottom. You have to fight her to get her not to squat then!

Rawr ,,..180lbs with good form, 6 reps.
Then, my ass and quads will say " No,you're not going to make it anymore".

I'd recommend using a curl bar, those go as low as 15 lbs. You can possibly put it on your back yourself, or get a spotter to do it. OR do front squats with as much weight as you can ( a lot easier, you don't have to put it on your back).
I'd suggest front squats over dumbbell squats.

Not silly at all. I started with just the bar, and gradually added weights. Getting the feel of the bar, the balance and the movement first helps a lot :).

Yeah...don't feel bad. I just started lifting and I'm doing lunges with no weights right now. I tried it with 5 lb weights but couldn't do all the sets that way properly. I think it's more important to keep form. But anyways..that didn't stop my ass from aching to all high heaven though!:D

By curl bar, I mean the lighter thin bar that is usually used for bicep curls. I actually prefer that bar for front squats, easier to hold. Some gyms have these with fixed weights on them, some you add the weights.

If you are dieting (I don't know if you are) it is not likely it will increase. You would have to be eating slightly above maintenance to gain muscle (esp. since you are not genetically prone to booty). Do squats at least once every 5 days and add some walking lunges in there.

To rep someone you click on the picture of a scale at the bottom left of a person's post and you either agree(positive) or disagree(negative) but you only get 5 per day.

I just repped you. You can go and look at who reps you. Look in the lefthand corner of the screen. You'll see User CP. Click on that and it will show who repped you. To rep someone you click on the scale under their avi.

You get 1 rep power for every 1000 reps you get, plus a bunch of other things (how long you've been a member, etc.). So, you have 1 right now because you have 50+ posts. When you get to 1000 reps, you'll have 2.

Ok, guys. I am seriously chasing the squat butt now. I have been fooling around, taking my time, and wasting time. Spending to long on each weight, kinda giving the lower body less attention in the gym. But now, I'm ready to bounce a quarter off it. Yesterday I finally put 135 on and it was easy! Honestly, I was expecting worse. I guess spending so much time at 125 prepared me.
But that leads me to a question. How much weight should be added, how often?

It depends on your routine. If I can do 3 sets of 8, I increase the weight by 5-10% depending on the difficulty.

So it pretty much works the same for women as it does for men...I wasn't sure if squats worked out like the rest.

Less so than regular stance squats. But then again, if your thighs are prone to growing, they will probably grow.
