Songs like Four Horsemen, Creeping Death, Master of Puppets and One always get talked about.....but there are many lesser known Metallica songs that kick just as much, if not more a$$. Mine are (in order of the albums release):

Jump in the Fire
Phantom Lord
No Remorse
Fight Fire with Fire
Trapped Under Ice
The Thing that Should Not Be
Leper Messiah
Eye of the Beholder
The Shortest Straw
The Frayed Ends of Sanity (LOVE this song)
Holier than Thou
Through the Never
The God that Failed
The House that Jack Built
Better than You

All these songs seem to be overshadowed by the more popular ones on their respective albums, but in many cases these are some of the strongest songs. Anyone else?

Yea it's a good song, but I always thought of it as being one of the more popular songs, rather than underrrated.

I guess to the true fans it is but to the average person on the street, they probably never heard of it. In that regard, I think a lot of their songs are underrated. A lot of people only know the hits they hear on the radio.

Yea that's definitely true......other than "One" most people have never even heard of any Metallica songs that pre-date the black album.

Eye of the Beholder <<< that song is the ****, so is Fight Fire with Fire..... actually the Unforgiven II is really good too, it isnt very heavy but the clean toned riff kicks ass.

Man.....between COK and Orion that's a tough call......

I like the ending of Ktulu a lot......but overall I think I like Orion better. (Not by much though......I could go either way depending on my mood. The ending of Ktulu is heavy as ****!)

I really can't choose a song...I can't consider any underrated to me since I love every song from KEA-AJFA, and I like the Black Album. If I must choose one though:
CREEPING DEATH

Better than you, Fuel and For whom the bell tolls. I don't know how well known they all are, but they never seemed to get tlaked about (well, maybe fuel does). There's something about the lyrics in better than you and bellz that really strikes a chord and you can't ignore... they just, work!

*bows down to thread starter*

At the risk of sounding like a skinny 80's metalhead with long hair and no shirt..... METALLICA ****ING RULES!!!!! *devil horns up*

Most underrated songs? Like someone said, to Metallica fans they don't exist cuz very very few of them are NOT amazing to begin with.... I'd say:

To Live is To Die
Dyer's Eve
Don't Tread on Me
The Thing That Should Not Be (a brutally heavy masterpiece)

and

Sad But True -- this one is minimally well-known but then again, because it IS on the black album it totally gets overshadowed by Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam, and Nothing Else Matters. I nearly clawed through my TV when I saw Kid Rock did a ****ing song sampling Sad But True. ****in ***got....

And on the Orion vs Call of Ktulu (Cthulu? Kthulu? How is it REALLY spelled, eh?), I think I'd have to go with Ktulu. Orion ownz some ass, but Call of Ktulu is seriously a bonechilling song....

Is there really a connection between The Thing That Should Not Be and Call of Ktulu, or is that just me daydreaming again?

Pre-Black Album Metallica is definitely not underrated. 30% of Metallica fans will tell you that everything past the Black Album sucked. ...And Justice For All is by far my favorite album, and Kill 'Em All is my least favorite. That is, if you don't count St. Anger. St. Anger is one of the worst albums ever made. Although, the edit of Some Kind of Monster is alright.

I think the most underrated Metallica song is definitely "- Human." Some people haven't even heard of it, but it's one of my top 20 favorite Metallica songs. Among a few other underrated songs are "Mama Said," and "Fixxer."

I'd also like to point out that the thread isn't asking your favorite Metallica songs, just the underrated ones. "Seek and Destroy," "Fight Fire With Fire," "Dyer's Eve," "Fuel," and "Orion," (among many, many others) are the stupidest answers I have ever heard. No offense to anyone. Also, anyone that mentions anything off the Black Album that isn't "The Struggle Within." But I hate that song, so you shouldn't mention it, anyway.

It's true that most "real" Metallica fans agree that everything beyond the Black Album sucked (many of them say that Black album sucked as well, but I don't think so). But when you consider the fact that 95% of posers can't name a single pre-black album song (other than "one"), I'd say it does make all that stuff underrated.

Just out of my own curiousity:
How many people like "St. Anger" album?
And also S&M album?
Hell, why dont I include Garage Days CD release?

I don't know one single person who doesn't think St. Anger sucks.

I bought it when it came out, since I'm a fan. I listened to it straight through, then took it out of my CD player and never put it back in since. Hell, I don't even know where it is. And I don't care.

I think that album must have been a joke or something. James and Lars must have been like, "let's make the sh*ttiest album possible, and see how many suckers buy it anyway."

I like S&M. The orchestra's part all tends to start sounding the same, though. It's good if you start to get bored of listening to the songs over and over again. I really like "No Leaf Clover" and "-Human," too bad St. Anger didn't sound like them. I saw Metallica a couple weeks ago, and they played "No Leaf Clover." It was pretty awesome.

Garage Days was alright. I got bored of half of the songs after a while. I remember when I started my first band, we always played that stuff.
