View Full Version : What factors have changed the look of modern bodybuilders?

I'm curious as to what exactly has changed the look of bodybuilders over the years. Is it the way they train, the way they eat or the drugs, something else perhaps.
The reason why I ask is that most people would rather look like the classic bodybuilder, I think it would be important that in order to look like them we've got to know what makes them what they are.
If someone wanted a classic physique how would someone go about doing so?

If ya want to look like Steve Reeves, et al, then....#1 have good genetics, #2 Eat right, #3 Train hard, and #4 take the right supps
If ya want to look like a freak, then....#1 have good genetics, #2 Eat right, #3 Train right, and #4 AAS, GH, insulin(this is a big one that was highly responsible for the mass monsters of the mid to late '90's).

From what I understand insulin use is the main reason for the mass monster look, and growth hormone and IGF-1. I am trying to get the classic look, but I am just sticking with the basics, training 6 days a week and eating clean. It's working too! I basically have always followed Arnold's advice about training, his book the encyclopedia of bodybuilding helped me form my apporach.

its def not all drugs...a lot basketball players are taller now than they were 30 years ago..does that mean they all took hgh when they were kids?????
insulin, igf, higher doses of steriods, and hgh have something to do with it, but humans are evolving in general. the average man is taller now than in the past, and humans as a whole can just be growing larger...drugs play a part, theres no denying that, but it is not the sole reason

right, thats true. but if u also look at the diets and training of the guys in the 70's, and then look at what we do now, there is a HUGE difference.

It's not all drugs. Supplements and diets have changed radically in the past 20-30 years. But nobody can deny the impact that GH and insulin have had on the mass of today's pros. Even if you look at the pro's from the late '80's and early 90's, they weren't anywhere near the size that they were beginning with Dorian. Dorian and Nasser stand out as the two that really took mass to a new level. Nasser seemed to blow up out of nowhere. The reason....insulin.

Finally, some good replies. Yes, insulin is a very, very big reason for uh....bigness. So is HGH. Though, steriods and chemicals are better than they were before due to advances in science. As for humans getting bigger, yeah, there's that too. Though, even big people don't often get to 270 lbs of ripped muscle.

20 to 30 years of evolution doesn't change sh!t and you know it. More people today are choosing to bodybuild, so there are more good athletes to choose from. But mostly it really is drugs. That's the reason for the change

please don't try to sound intellegent when you don't know about evolution. It is due to diet that people are becoming taller, we now know the importance of calcium, vitamins and minerals as well as macronutrients as a child. People used to think that they would grow whatever you fed them, now people feed those supplemented powders to babies. Nothing to do with evolution my friend.
Three things in this order:
1. Drugs, more and better ones
2. Training, less volume
3. Diet, not so much, because they all ate **** loads of protein, but there is more emphasis on what you eat and hwne you do it now.

Mainly the drugs have changed. The training and dieting techniques are not much different really (don't believe the magazine bullcrap). Also, the judging has changed so the guys go for what the judges are looking for = SIZE. They don't care about symmetry anymore.

hey guys, like i said, drugs definitely play a part in the freaks we see today. insulin and igf-1 are the major parts of it...but again they are not all. in EVERY sport, we are seeing bigger, faster, stronger, more athletic athletes and that has to do with genetics too, not just drugs. so many a**holes are so quick to blame everything on drugs and not even take nutrition and proper training into consideration, let alone genetics. bb'ers used to work out for hours every day, now you see bb'ers in and out in an hour or 2 and only going for 4-5 days a week...but u take ronnie and arnold, give them the same exact steroids, same training, and food and i still bet ronnie would take him...its called genetics people

The main reason for the difference is the knowledge of the various cycles, IMO.

put down your crackpipe. if you think drugs are the main reason pros are bigger, why are many fitness models and natural bodybuilders nearly the same size as the pros of the 70s?

They are not. Times have changed and so has diet and training knowledge and technology. Don't be suprised if you see a 330 lbs Mr.Olympia in the next decade or so. Image bodybuilding in the year 2020. **** by that time it will probably be outlawed.

its all drugs, better drugs. Yeah i realize we know more about nutrition and proper training too. Basically, you add those WITH the drugs and BINGO you have today's mass monsters.
lol, evolution? in 30 years? highly doubtful.

think about the classics, when they were kidsi nthe 50's they did not have the right vitamins and all that while ppl from the 70's have better general health.
