I have a crappy little 15 watt crate amp. I was told it would be a pretty good amp if I just replace the speaker. I'm having a hard time finding one though, and I was wondering if a car speaker that fits the measurements would work just as well.

If so, any reccomendations on brand?

If not, where can I get a cheap but good replacement speaker?

I wouldn't bother mate. you cant polish a turd. your better off saving some more and buying a decent amp. at the price level of a Crate 15, its not just the speaker that is crappy, but the circuit boards, inputs and general construction. a better investment would be a higher range mid-power solid state amp, from peavey, line6 or marshall. if you've got the extra dosh, shell out for a tube amp. one of the goodies is the marshall dsl401 combo, and the fender hotrod deluxe is not too bad either.

but if you're deadset on the speaker, celestion is the only brand to go for in my opinion. your amp probably has a 10-inch speaker, so find one of those. you'll probably be laughed out of the store when they ask what the speaker is for. seriously, i wouldnt worry about the speaker replacement.

Well, I would agree with you except for a few things I didn't mention like; I only play in my room, I only play as a hobby, and my amp sounds great for a practice amp with my distortion pedal. The only problem is the speaker can't handle the lower tones. I went to a few stores and they played around with it and said its actually a pretty decent amp if I just replace the speaker. They said a celestion like you mentioned, but they cost 90 bucks. Id rather try out a cheap car speaker first, if it would work. I have no need for a louder amp, just want to get the most out of this one.

fair enough. if you're deadset on the speaker, check these out. i'm not passing myself as a speaker expert, though, so your best bet would be to wander into a store and have a chat with the guys in the amplifier section. if theyre worth their weight, theyll be able to help you, and even check what each of the speakers sound like.

best of luck with the hunt man.
