I was offered a new job today (internal vacancy) and they want me to start as early as my department will agree. If my new boss has her way in August ;) .

My friend and I have been planning our annual holiday for mid-September though nothing has been booked. I can't go earlier this year because of my mum's 60th birthday. I happen to know my new department has a major deadline every 30th September. By 'major' I mean imposed by the government. We haven't discussed workloads yet but I'm sure I'd be expected to get straight in, particualrly a the job has been vacant for a few months. I'm not sure if it's worth broaching the possibility of time off and somehow that seems a bit um, cheeky

I've told my friend that I might not be able to make it this year. there are other people going but she and I always go together, it's 'our thing'. She seems a tiny bit disappointed, I know she'd rather I came along even if the others didn't. But the sensible voice is telling me to pass up just one holiday in the sun and maybe console myself with a bag from my favourite French designer.

Your thoughts?

While it's certainly nice to have some time off, anyone who has been successful in their career and life has made some sacrifices. If missing this trip means furthering your career, go for it. An opportunity like this may not present itself again.

I always go with what makes me happiest...for me I'm a workaholic, I never take time off, so when I have a chance too i take it, due to the fact work will always be there, so will French handbags, friends won't.
