I am also a weekend warrior, and a hire out computer tech/network consultant.... but only on the side and not verry much at all.

That does sound like rewarding work. I love being able to give someone good news. The rejections wouldn't be too fun, but if you're on a larger scale you probably don't deal with that as much anymore.... or if you do it's for a darn good reason!

Current job - business continuity management. Basically I developed contingency strategies for an investment banking firm in Tokyo.

Before this....:
- TI project manager, specializing in the implementation of equity trading systems, front to back transaction management, and B2B trading platforms.
- Business analyst for a start up investment banking firm
- Head of International settlements for an investment banking firm.
....and way before these, I was asking "Do you want fries with that?"

My current job gives me enough personal time to focus on my health and fitness. Working an 80 week leaves very little left over for BB'ing.

I'm loving the new hotness, but getting a little bored & antsy. Must resist this impulse until I hit my maintenance target.

Project manager for a large civil engineering/hydrology/wetland mitigation/land surveying firm. We did the Mercedes and the most recent Honda manufacturing plants. That should give away what state I'm currently residing in.

Before that a designer, draftsman, survey crew chief, survey crew member (every level) with a small civil engineering/land surveying firm.

Before that I had the coolest job in the world with the Navy that I can't really talk about.

Before that I was asking if you wanted fries with that just as Revmachine21 - only my feet weren't as pretty. :D

Before that I would get up early, ride in with my stepdad and push a lawnmower and gas can around the city mowing yards during the summer. During the winter I would sell mistletoe that I collected myself with a .22 rifle. Started out selling door to door but soon realized that I could make much more by packaging it and selling it to stores.

Before that my job was to collect meat for our table. My little brother and I hunted every day and if we came home empty handed then we had beans and sometimes grits. Kind of a shock to go from the largest house (with servants) and newest car on St. Croix to a dirt poor living in rural Alabama.

I could really do with a contact like you in Australian Customs and Quarantine. Honestly, they are a pathetic pain in the butt to deal with!!!!

As for my career, that depends on the particular day... here's a few of the things I am currently doing for an income...

* Importation, distribution and retail of Melanotan II tanning peptide,
* Musician (keyboards / piano, drums, percussion, trumpet, guitar and bass)
* Sound engineer (live, studio and on location)
* Theatre technician (performance not medical),
* Photographer,
* Personal trainer,
* Electronics (mostly design and construction of pro audio / visual and computer gear these days)
* Video producer,
* Web design
* Strongwoman (yes, I earn an income from it!!)

My newest business is SuperPuss Music and Image (http://www.musclefemme.com/superpuss/indexpro.html) which is an expansion of my music project at www.superpuss.net
My most recent website design is www.lash78.com - the video player on the lash78 site is NOT Youtube. It is a flash application I installed on the Lash78 server specifically for that site.
My strongwoman website is www.musclefemme.com
...and my Melanotan website is www.melanotanaustralia.com

If you can start with Structural Engineering, it will serve as a lead-in for more future choices. Enviromental Engineering is more of a secondary skill set that can be learned via OJT and self-study.

Senior Estimator for a mid sized heavy highway contractor.

I figure out every sf, cy and lb of materials and work that will be done on the strucutures, throw a price on it and turn it in hoping to be low bidder but not too low. Can be a bit stressful at times.

Previously (9 years ago) worked for one of the largest heavy highway contractors in the world starting out from college as an Office Engineer, Project Engineer, Superintendant and finally Project Manager, estimating projects along the way.

I've been on major freeway interchange, airport taxiway & runway, dam modifications, housing development infrastructure and some very interesting and complex bridge projects all over the SW and NW.

Now that I've been here for 9 years I realize that PM was way too much work! We've had a few periods where I've had to put in more than 40 hours and the day before a bid can often turn into a 24 hour shift (a very stressful 24 hour shift) BUT it is so much easier. No emergencies, no crews hanging around looking for direction, no owners to try to educate (well sometimes but it's not nearly as difficult, if they don't listen we just add money).

We picked up a lot of work (I'm good ;)) so we aren't bidding right now which means I get to help out with all the various projects, it's driving me nuts!

It's the other way around on the design side. We do have the odd long week here and there but it's not that often.

Good job you got there though :)

From my limited experience working with designer's on a couple design/build projects, I would think that your job is, for the most part similar to mine in terms of hours req'd in the office.

Like, other than for the occasional short deadline, you can plan your workload to accomodate your life.

I work in Reinsurance and have for 10 years. Currently I am managing the selection and implementation of a new reinsurance accounting system for a specialty lines insurance company. Not rewarding at all, but I am good at what I do and have worked really hard to get where I am at.

I'm a civil engineer working as an office engineer for a heavy civil construction company. my project ends in 8 months after that...well who knows, I think I might give design a try. I'm not a fan of the 55+ hour weeks and such.

Yeah. My major is Civil Engineering. I haven't decided whether I want to emphasize on structural or environmental yet... both interest me a lot.

awesome stuff!

If you can start with Structural Engineering, it will serve as a lead-in for more future choices. Enviromental Engineering is more of a secondary skill set that can be learned via OJT and self-study.

def agree. It would be very difficult to get a job as a structural engineer with a enviromental emphasis, but it would be a lot easier to get an enviromental engineer job with structures emphasis.

I've been on major freeway interchange, airport taxiway & runway, dam modifications, housing development infrastructure and some very interesting and complex bridge projects all over the SW and NW.

awesome, do you like the mid sized company better than the big company?

I'm a civil engineer working as an office engineer for a heavy civil construction company.

Do the initials PKS mean anything to you? That was my former employer and they were one of the few that I was familiar with that normally staffed a job with office engineers. Those were fun years but I've been much happier in the midsized company I work for.

The large companies have their benefits, when I was with PKS, I could find expert help on anything from within the company and the opportunity for travel and promotion was pretty much limitless. But, I did move several times with them because you have to go where you are needed and back then (I left in 1997) there were some in the company who still couldn't accept a female being in construction.

The biggest draw with the midsized company was the fact that they were located in my hometown. I had purchased 70 acres of timberland very near my family, way out in the boondocks back in 1990 so I jumped at the opportunity to move back to the NW. After knocking around the SW for 15 years I was ready to come back home to a smaller city and it took me 6 years of sending resumes to these guys to convince them that they needed me.

I probably would have had more opportunities and made more money if I'd stayed with the big company but after the kids came along, moving and living in the larger cities wasn't appealing to me anymore.

The risk of a bad project is more of a concern in this company, we aren't big enough to absorb some of the huge losses that some of the large contractors get hit with at times. I think it keeps us a bit more attentive to details.

PKS....YES! My first boss worked for them, our old lead estimator also worked for them and now works for them again. When you said you worked for a big heavy civil, I figured that's where you worked.

I waited tables before and now hate teh food industry.

I really want to be a personal trainer and compete one day since that's where my true love is. I just need to figure out how to get there...

I have a business degree.

I also play the guitar but haven't made money off of that either haha. People say I'm pretty good though so that makes me happy.

I'd be happy to :)

basically, the work I currently do is gene discovery in pathogenic bacteria. I'm trying to find bacterial genes that are only induced in vivo (in mammalian hosts).
With some luck, if I can identify any, I'll try to characterize them to get a better understanding of their function and role in virulence. With the ultimate goal of passing that information on to be used for development of better, more effective vaccines &/or treatments therapies or even diagnostic tests.

I'm a very proud stay at home mom, and wouldn't have it any other way other than to have a small in-home business. Prior to this I was a photo technician, and I'm hoping to eventually start up a work-at-home mom business. I sew things such as cloth diapers (they're not just a piece of cloth and pins these days!), cloth wipes that can be used for lots of things around the house, and more. I also make all natural bath products including oatmeal baths, bath salts, and the like. :). Just can't wait to one day make a business out of it.

Fulltime student doing a double major in Electrical and Computer Engineering (cant wait to finish). When i'm done, I dont know what i'm gonna do. Might branch off to Audio Engineering, go work for the Army (NOT weapons engineering, dont wanna have an input to WWIII) or go work for ***.

right now, I do so many things. I'm about to go into real estating, do web designing for a friend for his busniess in my free time, about to help him branch his business off to other state and run that branch. Do hardware fixing like security cameras, tv's, phones, install car audio and visual system (with no prior training, i just figure out how to fix them when I open them up ever since I was a lil yomama)

Well, I graduated from university last year with a Sociology major and Middle Eastern & African Studies minor. Wishing I knew back when I was 18 what I know now - I definitely would have gone into something fitness related!

I work for an insurance company as an administrative assistant right now - pays the bills, but it requires absolutely no thinking (which I can't stand!). Currently applying and interviewing for better positions!

Also, looking into going back to college and doing a Personal Fitness Trainer diploma (through correspondence only as I am not going back to sitting in a classroom!) - with the program I am looking into you are certified with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology as a certified personal trainer. Sounds awesome to me!

Wow, what a wide range of occupations, interesting. I'm a stay-at-home-mom for 15 yrs. now and at 36 yrs. old I'm trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. :) I thank my husband for giving me the opportunity to stay at home and raise my babies. My kids are 16, 14, & almost 8. I'm currently enrolled at the local community college and pursuing a degree, haven't figured out which one though. I'd like to work with the senior population in fitness and health. I know it doesn't sound very exciting to most, but I enjoy spending time with active seniors and would like to pursue a career in it. I have no idea where to start or go from here though.

Yeah, I made my own t-shirt "You don't scare me, I teach High School"

The place I'm at now is pretty tame, good kids. A few years ago I taught at a high school where I had to break up fights all the time and students would miss class a few weeks at a time because they were in jail. I taught health which covered Sex Ed, STD's and drugs. Classic case of students teaching the teacher.
