Got back yesterday from my first trip to Destin, Florida. I have decided that when I retire I'm getting an RV and we are going to live on the beach, LOL. The sand was so white I could barely see, and the water was so unbelievably clear and blue. It was the best vacation ever!!

I have to agree that Destin is the sh*t. I was stationed in Pensacola for a little over 3 years and I made regular trips to Destin. I love the shopping, fishing, and food there. I'll be going back to Pensacola in about a month and I can't wait to get back to Destin.

Depends on which Island. The cost of food is sometimes high because it has to come a long way but the cost of most booze and cigs are minimal. Housing costs are not hideous in most places (not that I care - I'll be living aboard a 50 or so footer) unless you want to be on the beach. Any local foods like seafood, fruits, vegetables and local baked goods usually are dirt cheap but if you like tomatoes or potatoes from the mainland be prepared to pay for them.

It really depends on your chosen style of living also. I prefer to hang out in places the locals hang out, eat the local cuisine and party with the locals. On St. Maarten you can get a decent slip for less than $50 a month and then pay your electricity use at actual cost but it won't be the super cool Oyster Bay area where all the high rollers hang out and pay several thousands of dollars a month for a slip, can't bring any fuel onto your boat other than what they sell at the marina (for five times the local cost) and can't step foot on the dock without paying some sort of fee. I have been to oyster bay (the actual marina) once as a guest of someone who can afford it and likes to hang out with other elitists.

I'm no elitist and I can fix better fish that I caught myself for practically nothing than the chefs at most of the resteraunts who cater to the tourists and are too expensive for the average local. Given a few hours with a gig and a decent reef and I'll come back with a ****load of lobster that only cost me the fuel to run to the reef :D

It all depends on how you want to live - if you feel the need to put on airs you will probably pay a premium. If the locals think you are one of them, prices all of a sudden begin to slide downward and you can get much better quality of perishables. There are places in south and central america where you can live like a king for a few hundred a month and there will always be places where you have to have some serious jack just to visit for a little while.

btw I was born and raised in Christiansted, St. Croix but I like St. Maarten, St. Barth's and the coast of Brazil, Belize (holy **** you better pay attention sailing there) and Mexico more than any other now. My tastes have changed over the years though and may again even before I retire - just never know.
