Is the hook grip a necessity on cleans? I am trying to get used to it on snatches, but do I need to use it on cleans?

(1st post is a noob one, lol)

Absolutely for snatches. Once it gets heavy you will need all the help you can get.

I do it for cleans only once I get close to a competition, though for me it is not really a big deal. The clean is my strongest lift.

For a 175 lb individual would you consider a 225 lb clean to be good?

I've recently been advised by a coach to use hook grip for cleans all the time. Every little bit of energy you can save helps.

hook grip builds good thumb strength too, which too many ppl seem to lack

I like the hook because it kind of forces me to align my arms properly. That little bit of internal rotation goes a long way for me!

maybe practice using it more? I deadlifted 315lb from a 2inch deficit for 3 reps today, using a hook grip, and it didnt hurt my thumbs at all

I think so, the hook grip takes a while to get used to, but when you do you won't find a more secure grip for oly-lifting.

besides straps, but those are G A Y, IMO

Use it.

Ive found with my hand 'looser' it is much easier to place the clean on shoulders and is much more forgiving on the wrists.

hahah, this is funny but a few months ago I was talking massive **** to everybody telling them to burn their straps and whatnot, now I actually use them and feel they're a good training tool, I know a lot of o-lifters use straps to do reps on snatches as well as snatch and clean high pulls, I myself only use them on weighted dead hangs, high pulls for reps from the hang, and double overhand power shrugs, and typically only for the heaviest sets, I feel they are a crutch otherwise though.

Well, since they are not allowed in competition, most lifters use them for several reasons, a couple of which are to save their grip in the run up to a comp, and to focus on their core (RDLs and such) with heavier weights while maintaining perfect form.

I have gotten used to the hook grip, I even use it for barbell rows now. Should I also practice Jerks with the hook grip as well?

That sounds really awkward, I haven't heard of anyone doing that. So my vote is no.

so when you are competing, do you clean with the hook grip then change the grip to jerk it? How exactly would you perform a clean and jerk in competition?

PrivateBaldrick

That's what I do. It's not that hard to do. If you need to, judges will let you use your legs to push the bar up a bit so you can regrip (including changing hand spacing) before you start the jerk.

I clean with a hook grip, but when I rack it, I only have the bar on my finger tips. Stand up, then do the jerk drive with the bar still on my fingers, and grip it when I catch it over head. My wrists aren't flexible enough to rack while gripping it.

Most lifters will naturally release the hook as they turn the bar over to catch it. It usually happens automatically for me, but every once in a while I find out I'm still hooked after standing up with a clean. I usually pop the bar up at the top of the clean recovery to re-set/widen my grip for the jerk because my jerk grip is actually pretty close to the width I use for snatches :o

lol i always end up with only my right hand hooked, my left hand always comes unhooked automatically after the clean but never my right hand.
