Hey all... this is new to me, so help me out!

I have decided to do my first show - it's gonna be held on Sept. 15th

I am working with a trainer via internet/phone but I would like additional help.

I'm about to place my order for supplies. I'm going to buy a pair of black trunks in medium (from bb.com) - is it better to buy bigger or smaller? I have very thick glutes so even after I cut down I'll probably be able to fill out the medium so I'm not worried.

I'm buying the larger bottle of Pro Tan - better to have extra than not enough. I won't need many applications I reckon. I also plan to do just one layer of Dream Tan - which one is the "#2" that everyone raves about?! Gold brown or red bronze?

Is there anything else I'll need for this initial order? I'm out of contact with my trainer for a week so I'd like to get this over with so I can get my suit and supplies as early as possible.

I'm sure I will have more questions later, but if anyone could help me out with this tonight I'd be really appreciative!

medium will be good if your waist is about 30" give or take... IMO.... use jantana competition color AFTER protan.... some shows wont allow dream tan b/c it gets on EVERYTHING... also..depending on the lights... you may want to apply PAM cooking spray lightly to give a nice sheen over the tan.

thanks a lot for replying..

most of what i've read (feedback from competitors) favors protan base and one layer or dream tan the day of competition..

Any other suggestions?

I don't really need anything else at this point, do I?

1 week out!

I have a couple of questions..

First, a lot of people have been bugging me to start tanning. In Layne's contest prep article, he says that ProTan and Dream Tan are enough, and that he doesn't waste time getting a base tan. Should I worry about coming in too light?

Also, I'd appreciate if everyone would share their last week tips and whatnot, or a rundown of contest day. I have some people telling me to carb up through friday/sat, others telling me to cut off carbs friday evening and have a big steak for dinner, with something like french toast for breakfast on contest day.

I don't plan on trying anything drastic, but I'm confused about those last few days.

Which contest is this bro? I'm doin one Sept 15th as well. I built a slight base tan, just to get me away from being pasty. Pro and Dream tan are gonna be my majory supplies for the look.

How's the last week treatin ya? I'm on 7 days out. I assume that's the exact same for you as well. However I won't be ready, but I'm still gettin on stage. And gonna keep rippin it up after the contest, I set a goal for 5%, I'm gonna get there one way or another.

What is your goal for the next 7 days?

sucks, i'm still working both of my jobs, trying to diet, and trying to keep my head above water in school. the stress is killing me because of the dieting - usually i can handle everything just fine.

unfortunately, one of my jobs is very physical, and yesterday i was working outside in the sun most of the day - i'm totally run down.

last time i checked i was around 4.7%, so i guess i'm good for the novice category. i assume it's not always as competitive as say the open or teen class, where people have experience (usually). i think not ever SEEING a show is going to be my biggest disadvantage.

goal for the next 7 days, since i'm officially on my own now and i'm receiving a whole bunch of conflicting advice is this:
a) don't die from stress :)
b) try to continue carb depleting through wednesday morning, and begin carbing up wednesday @ approx 1.7g/lb.
-shave wednesday, maybe get my haircut (if not, thursday), go for a mystic tan for a little base color, train my client(s) at the gym, and have someone shave my back for me that night. get my last workout in, make my posing CD, and if there's any time left in the day, practice :)

-thursday I'll drop water to 1gal, 1st coat ProTan in the morning, drop carbs to around 1.4g/lb, drop salt to 1.5-1g if possible, get that haircut if i didn't get it wednesday, and apply my second coat of ProTan at night, a few hours before bed. practice posing.

-friday i'll probably drop carbs to 1g/lb spread out, stopping at around 5pm. avoid salty foods or anything that causes me to bloat. 3rd coat ProTan (if i still have some left, it'll go on Saturday morning). planning on having a nice big steak friday night. more posing. will probably take some pictures in my trunks, outside for a change, and with an actual person holding the camera lol... going to bed early, and packing my bag!

-saturday i plan on getting up around 2am to have my first 30-40g carbs, hitting the sack until 4am - another 30-40g carbs repeated now and every 2 hours. if there's any PT left, i'll apply my final coat (depending on how dark i am). my polygraph is at 9am, check-in is between 9-10am and prejudging is supposed to be around 11am but who knows. i'll be snacking on salt-free rice cakes, maybe some jelly, peanut butter, and dark chocolate. i have some chocolate covered espresso beans at home - a couple of handfuls before going on stage for prejudging should give me a nice boost and help me pump. i don't know what i should snack on for protein on contest day... of course, i will apply the dream tan before prejudging, and perhaps again before the night show if necessary.

sheesh, i might as well refer back to this page to make sure i don't forget anything, i pretty much just planned out the rest of my week.

Wow! Good luck buddy.

Please post pics of the contest. Wish you first place.

thanks.. i just need to brush up my posing and i'll feel confident (until i get there LOL).

my weakest shots are definitely front and back double bi...I can easily be beat there. my strongest poses are side tri, oblique, ab+thigh, and MM. if i face "fair" competition, i may be able to walk out of that theater with a trophy.

i'm going to have a family member take pictures on friday - hopefully my color will be decent by then and i should be able to get a pump again lol; i hope i get some critiques on my posing so I can try some last minute changes based on experienced members' suggestions.

so, preliminary pictures will be put up at my leisure on friday, and contest pictures will be up sunday night the latest. i'm sure no matter how i do i'll be eager to get those up, it's just that i'm working ALL DAY sunday. i've done a really good job of "hiding" this contest - i haven't even taken off from work lol

(carb) up, up and away!

man, i forgot what it felt like to be human. i depleted severely (~10g carb or less) sunday thru tuesday. by tuesday night, i could hardly support my own weight, and had terribly low energy. a half mile walk left me drained, and my legs constantly felt like jello (last leg session was friday).

i updated my bodyblog with my thoughts from today, but i wanted to ask if anyone had any suggestions for my bag on contest day:

I'll have my food (feel free to suggest your favorite contest day foods though!), 10lb weights, resistance band, dream tan, ID/wallet and towel/t-shirt scraps. anything else?

A backup pair of trunks for the stage (you never know).
A camera.
Handy wipes to get the dream tan stuff off your hands.
Flip flop sandals.
Something to eat after the contest.
A sports drink or water.
An iPod so you can zone everything else out.
I've read some guy eats chocolate covered espresso beans for a kick before going on stage. Don't know if that helps, or just make you sick?

I hope you have someone to hold your stuff. Things like money, car keys, etc. etc.

whoops! forgot to mention I have 2 pairs of trunks. I've been using one for the past few weeks to pose and whatnot, and will probably wear it while applying the dream tan. I'll use my other pair for the stage, because they're not stretched out at all yet.

good call on the handy wipes. will have sandals as well for backstage, though i'm probably going to just wear heavy thermal socks with treads lol

will DEFINITELY have my music (ipod).

My mom and aunt are coming (they have VIP seating) and there'll be 2 cameras.. my boss (the owner of my gym) will also be coming, and he might have a camera too. They can hold my crap :D

That's funny - if you read my bodyblog for today, I mentioned that I'll be eating chocolate covered espresso beans on saturday. I know they don't adversely affect me because I used to eat them in the morning before working out. My carbs on saturday will be coming from: salt-free rice cakes, raisins, jelly, and those chocolate covered espresso beans. I also have dark chocolate and peanut butter in my bag for filling out before going on stage.

Thanks man, anyone else?

I'll have pre-contest pics up tomorrow; I'm going to have someone take some shots of me posing in my trunks outside.

I'm working all day Sunday, but if I'm not too tired I'll try to get them up Saturday night (the competition site is only about a half hour from my house, which is awesome for me). If not, no later than Sunday night - stay subscribed :)

I don't know how many people I'm competing against, or what kind of condition they'll be in - but I'm bringing you guys home a trophy.

it's my first contest man, and i wasn't planning on competing at all - i know my skin could be tighter and i'm not embarrassed to say it lol

Well, I may have slept a combined 2 or 3 hours last night. It was brutal. Finally at 6:30 I said screw it and got up. Washed off my ProTan, applied another coat, and started eating.

I'm going to take pictures later today, but it will be before my 4th coat of ProTan - I should still be dark enough to give a good preview. I MAY apply a 5th tomorrow morning, we'll see how dark I turn out after a rinse.

Er.. don't know what else to say.

can anyone give me a yay or nay on the commonly recommended prep-H and anti-histamine on contest day?

Do you mean spreading Preparation-H Cream all over your skin?

You have to be very careful doing something like that, because it's possible to over dose on the active ingredient in prep-H. Phenylephrine which is a decongestant that can cause the following if you over dose.

"Symptoms of a phenylephrine overdose include extreme tiredness, sweating, dizziness, a slow heartbeat, and coma."

http://www.drugs.com/MTM/phenylephrine.html

I don't think you should use prep-h, and also an anti-histamine at the same time. Both reduce your ability to function.

I'm not telling you not to use it. I've read on the forums that guys use it on their abs to shrink the fat under the skin. They claim it works, but your using a drug outside the manufactures recommended usage.

Don't use more prep-h on your skin, then you would use to treat a hemorrhoid.

tweaked17
09-14-2007, 06:37 AM
it's a topical application of phenylephrine, not oral or injected. Besides, I don't even know if that's the correct prep-h; it has been reformulated in the US. I'm not going to put a vasoconstrictor on my skin. No one else has responded and I don't have any so it doesn't look like I'll be trying it either way.

Don't worry, I'm not going to OD on claritin either lol

Thanks for your concern.

lol. I had this mental picture of you smearing prep-h all over from head to toe.

LOL well the only places i would consider using it would be on my obliques/lower abdominals and the inside of my arms. maybe on my quads if i found it worked well for me.

Pictures have been taken... just applying my next coat of ProTan. It's really not coming out all that dark, good thing I bought the Dream Tan as well. I'll finish the bottle of PT up tonight and sleep on it - totaling 5 coats (maybe 4 1/2, I don't know if I can cover my entire body with what's left).

I GOT THREE FRIGGIN MOSQUITO BITES while I was outside. One giant one on my left bi, one on my right calf, and I've got one dead center on my lower back. Anyone have any experience with this garbage? The DT will surely cover up any redness, but should I put some cream on that sucker or something (the one on my back is the only one that distracts the eye)?

Pics up in ~half hour or so :D

If you put a product called "After Bite" on it. It will help reduce the swelling and redness. Try putting some ice on it for a while as well.

i remember that stuff, looked like a pen. i have nothing in the house, but did try the ice earlier, as soon as i realized i got the bites. i also put some AC vinegar on the one on my bi - everything should be fine by tomorrow - as i said, the only bad one is on my back.

My aunt took these - she has no idea what the poses are called or what they should look like; I didn't want anyone telling me "elbows up, quads tight" etc.

I wanted to practice without a mirror as if I were on stage and they were being called out. Without further ado, please critique once they're all up....

Pix front lat: lower hands a little to show your lats
Pix side tri: rotation is too much
Pix oblique: chest up, chin up
Pix chest: show the chest rib cage more, chest up , chin up
Pix front d bi: to show more sweep in quad, rotate the knee about ? out. The quad sweep will appear more dramatic

will try to get them up (and videos) ASAP, as well as my thoughts about the contest. met some great people!!!

For now: Results...

There were 3 "unanimous decisions (all 5 judges)" for the entirety of the show. 70 competitors. I got two of them. Yeah, I didn't believe it either lol

I walked away with three trophies:

*Unanimous Decision: First place Lightweight Novice
*Unanimous Decision: First place Overall Novice
*Best Legs (yeah BUDDAY!)

I have some great videos (others didn't come out too good :()... There's a lot, but I will probably post my novice lightweight posedown and my overall novice posedown. I really tore it up (and I'm not one to pat myself on the back).

Pics and vids won't be up till mid-week prob. There are a LOT of pictures! I will only put up a few. I have to go shower and meditate on all of this.

By the way, I'm sure some of you are wondering what I ate after the show:

I kept the back lat in. I spoke to the guy who was working with me initially before my night show and asked him the same thing - he told me to leave the lat shot in. next few are more random:

1) ab & thigh
2) rear double bi
3) me and the open overall winner ("Mr. Long Island" :D)
4) me posing with my trophies in my driveway (not too bloated or uncomfortable to smile :D)
5) PART of my post-show meal
and last but not least,
6) rear lat spread vs. my whole class

you don't wanna see my fitday dude lol

my last depletion day before the show:

1429 cals
103g fat
13g carb
111g protein

edit:

forgot to mention...

they surprised us with like 12 pizzas back stage after the posing routines (before the placings and the overalls)... I have to say, that was a real test of mental strength!! And the promoter was eating brownies right in my face LOL

my routine, beginning is cut off :( I have another video with my intro and the first few seconds of the routine, but the quality is lower and the angle is bad.. poor tradeoff:

Novice Overall comparisons; heavyweight winner, middleweight, and myself from left to right (until they move me):

I also have the Men's Novice Lightweight posedown, which is kinda funny because the 2nd place winner pushes me ... might put that up later lol

I only came with two people. By the end of the night, I was getting crowd response for every back double bi I would hit, so I tried to hit as many as possible LOL

It feels good to have strangers yell your number or name. It was a really great experience for me.

The sound on my vid was the same way, I just used a simple program to re-dub the song over and it's way better. You should give that a shot. Excellent job.

oh no, wasn't the sound quality that bugged me. the other video is just terrible quality altogether. the only reason one would watch it would be to hear/see my introduction and see me walk on stage.

Damn, I can't upload the Men's Novice Lightweight posedown and awards. It's 24mb over the 100mb youtube limit.

I have total video converter at home, hopefully I can shrink the file size or cut the video on Friday, unless anyone knows of an alternate way.

edit:

Hmm.. doesn't seem to be working, even though it not longer says that it's publishing. Here is the link anyway, hopefully it will work in a few :)

edit #2:

Okay it works. That's me and the #2 lightweight (blue trunks) in the front, check it out @ around 15 seconds when he pushes me out of my rear double bi LOL

We knew it was between us by that time because we both nailed our posing routines and the prejudging, so we decided to just have fun with it and fool around a bit. It's funny how tension can turn into friendship in a few short hours. Doron is a cool guy, and I wish him the best of luck in the future (he is thinking about doing NPC shows).

That's a great video.

You really do stand out as the over all winner. No question about that. Impressive size and shape for such a young guy.

I see more wins in your future!

The binge continues....

I ate over 6000 calories yesterday (fitday'd it for fun), including an entire 14" domino's pizza and an order of cheesy bread. my roommates (both over 6'2" 170-180) were absolutely appalled at the amount of food I can eat.

Today I'm closer to my baseline diet... just eating oat bran, yogurt, milk, PB etc.

In short, from Saturday night through Tuesday night = best binge ever. Good way to kick off the cold seasons, putting on a little "insulation" :)

unreal bro, u came up insane.. legs are freakin awesome and you really kill the abthigh pose... deserve everything you got!
anyone can go to the gym and lift weights and put on muscle.. cutting up for a comp takes a whole new world of dedication, def not something i could do, admittedly!

im trying not to read about these 6000cal refeeds, the thought is making my bodyfat go up :o

:D How'd you guess? lol

Nope, no more for this year. I need to put on a lot more size before I'm going to consider myself ready to compete in the open class.

I may do another show before next September (before my INBF membership expires). There's plenty of time, I just don't know how much I can commit to it because of school and work.

I don't know if I mentioned it earlier, but some photographers solicited me after the prejudging and did an impromptu photoshoot outside the theater. They just sent me the link to the gallery with the shots, so I'll upload a few of the freakier-looking ones (and omit all the fruity-looking ones LOL):

You should send these out to some talent agents. Maybe you could make some extra money as a model while your in school. Or maybe some spots in a movie as an extra or something!

I was watching the 300 last night, and you'd make an amazing Spartan!

P.S. Your back is huge!

Don't we all wanna be Spartans? Don't we all? lol

Yeah we'll see - the photographers already knew who I was (when they introduced themselves, one said he had seen my bodyspace LOL). I signed a media release so basically they can sell those to anyone and have them use them and whatnot. They asked me to do another shoot (yeah right, bulk time) and perhaps in the future I'll be contacted and make a lil money on the side, but I'm not banking on it.

Thanks for the kind words.

It's all good Skip!! Just remember, if I didn't win, I would have blamed it on your not responding! :D ;)

I think it was a GREAT experience. It's such hard work though; everything from the preparation of a routine + music through dieting and trying to remain a functioning member of society and the grooming.. jeez!

I'm not ruling out another competition next summer though. I'll be in touch buddy!

yup, I think I'm just under 5'7 w/o shoes. Came in at 144lbs, dry as a bone in the morning. Lightest guy at the contest.

Deadlifts... ah. Haven't done those in almost 2 weeks. Today was my first day back in the gym after a short hiatus. Part of me wants to just hang out on the couch for another month lol
