View Full Version : Hair Straightening Products?
Hey there gals, i usually don't ever venture into this section, but i know if i posted this thread in the regular misc. section, i wouldn't ever get a single helpfull answer.
basicly, i've been growing my hair out, its a fair length now. just down to my chin/jaw area.
now my hair is naturaly thick, and frizzy.
the only time it looks good is when its straigthen with a flat iron. but obviously i can't do that every day, and plus, its a big hassle (at least for me, cause i'm not used to doing it). usually i wear a hat over it, actually....i allways wear a hat, lol. but if i don't straighten it, it'll shoot out to the sides underneeth my hat.....and of course that looks weird. i'm just using the basic stuff. shampoo.....and then conditioner (seperatly)
anyways, i was taking a quick look at the hair-care products at fred meyers. you know, just killing sometime, i saw alot of varietys....like "anti-frizz" and such.
there was a few that said i could straighten my hair just by spraying it in, combing, and blowdrying
another said i could straighten just by using these shower products....
basicly, i'm just wonderin, are these any good? do they give the same results if i used a flat iron?
also, if they are legit, is there a certain brand, or company. or just any specific one that is generaly better than the other?

You know I have the same hair, its actually curly, and frizzy, and super thick, its like a freaking horses blanket on my neck...I have to straighten it anytime I wear it down. I haven't found any products that you spray on or anything and blowdry it straight. I've always liked paul mitchell products, he has a stragtening line, and maybe get an ionic blowdry that helps with frizz...you may be able to pull it off with blowdrying it in sections...If you've never done anything chemically to your hair recently you could look into permenatly straighten it...its expensive and when your roots grow out your hair will be frizzy and you'll have to straighten some it...anyways Im rambling. Good luck I'll check back here to see if there is any good advice LOL

I use Aveda Smooth Infusion...I love Aveda products!
Oh and heat is the only thing that would straighten your hair...so if you don't like blow drying or flat ironing every day, I have no idea how you would keep it straight.
If you have lots of $$ you can get the Japanese Straightening done to your hair, but it's $600 a pop.

I have the same hair and am about to have it permanently straighten it! I have to do this because to wash and blow dry it takes me around 1.5 hours to staighten it!! It is a pain when I go to the gym every day, I find myself leaving it for days and days...YUK! No products have every worked well enough on my hair (I have spent a lot of money on them) and I figure the cost of permanently straightening it will save me money in the long run with products and hairdresser's blow drying it.
If you have not bleached your hair in the past year or so or if it not damaged badly from other processes this may be a good option for you.
Good luck!

I think the best method (if your able to) is chemically staighten it. I've tried every product out there and nothing really works.
However, I did buy some BioSilk from Target and it has been the BEST product tried yet. You can smooth some on after blow drying and then straighten and it def. makes the process quicker. I've used it by itself and it does tame my hair somewhat, but still doesn't look like when I iron it. Oh, and only use alittle b/c otherwise your head will be WAY to oily....
Best advice IMO.....Chi iron + Biosilk= straight, silky, smooth hair =)
allrighty guys, thxs for all the help

I don't know how long your hair is or for what you are aiming for but his website really taught me a lot. Longhaircommunity.com. These girls/guys have tried it all and can teach you a lot.
Don't dry/straighten your hair everyday. It will break it off. I stopped doing that a long time ago. I have naturally curly/wavy hair. I use matrix creme ( can get it at beauty salon or at ulta ). I let it air dry. It keeps the frizz away. Lurk over there a bit. They have to know something about what they are saying. Some of their hair is down to their knees.
Oh, one other thing. I don't know what you like to spend on products but I have found a new shampoo and conditioner that is out of this world. It is ojon. I use the ultra hydrating. Unbelievable. Costly though.
Good luck with your search

I use the Karmin G3 Salon Pro, it heats up to 450f with temperature control, dual voltage, tourmaline ceramic plates with rounded edges which makes it great for also curling your hair. Also has a 3 year warranty.
I love it because my hair looks smooth, very straight and i can make long lasting curls with it.

Chemically straightening is not the cure all either. I have had mine chemically straightened a few times and within weeks it will begin to curl up as though I never did anything to it.
Sadly there is no product that you can put in your hair and expect to come out with bone straight hair.
Your best option is to use a straightening shampoo, straightening conditioner and follow up with an anti-frizz leave-in product and a smoothing/straightening cream and then blow dry your hair using a boar hair round brush. This is still going to eat up a good 20-30 minutes (depending on length and thickness of hair) to fully blow dry your hair.
I have learned to embrace my curls especially for days where I am not in the mood to put all that fuss into styling my hair straight; although I sure feel more sexy and confident with straight hair. For curly hair you can use hair pins to twist your bangs or the hair where bangs would be and pin the hair back and then I toss the rest of my hair in a medium to high ponytail.

I had mine japanese straightened and it is permanently straight until it grows in. Seriously, see my pics. I had ringlets and now it air-dries pin straight and shiny. I use the blowdryer on low cool/warm to get the wetness out of it. I get the roots touched up every 6-8 months. Best money I have EVER spent.
I love Pureology's Smoothing Elixir. It's expensive, but it makes my hair sleek and mirror-shiny. I dye my hair so dullness can be an issue as dye is drying, but this stuff is like a miracle! Also the Organix line of Brazilian Keratin shampoo, conditioner and serums is great.

If it's frizzy your hair actually might need moisture, and heat styling and chemically straightening really isn't going to help if that's the case.

just wanted to say that going against nature will always wreak havoc on your body...just work with what you have...heat and chemicals may do the job temporarily but over the long run you will end up in a worse situation...try to keep it simple and maybe a cream/leave in conditioner may do you good to manage fly aways and frizzies

Wow this is a old post (2007!).
I chemically straighten my hair every couple of months and I only need to touch up the roots when they grow in. My hair is permanently straight once I apply the relaxer chemicals. Even with my hair being chemically straightened I still have to flat iron my hair after letting it air dry because it is slightly wavy and very loose curls/frizzy. The flat iron I use is Remington Wet2dry flat iron, this allows you to straighten your hair even though it is a little wet (not soaking or dripping wet). To keep my hair from frizzing I use "smooth n shine polishing" spray on polisher before flat ironing. After I get my hair nice and straight I'm done. Also at night I wrap my hair so that I don't have to apply heat to it until next time I wash it usually once a week. Anti-frizz spray works really well and just spray it on your hair before or after you flat iron.
Also I wanted to add that I've been chemically straightening my hair since I was 13 and my hair is very healthy, no breakage, bald spots, chemical burns, etc. It's safe if you know what you're doing. Good Luck.

chemically straightening your hair. Can this be done by yourself or do you get your hairdresser to do it?

I use a very good hair product to help reduce frizz and keep hair healthy, shiny and resilient. it's Pro Naturals Moroccan Oil hair treatment with heat protector, it smoothes the cuticles and helps fortify hair that is prone to breaking, split ends and supplies hair nutrients. Provides heat protection against electronic hair tools. I bought it at safrons.
