They actually dont sell real yams in the united states at most markets. yams are jsut a slightly sweeter sweet potato whe nthey name them that at a grocery store. So either one is good, because they are both the same thing.

AS for rice or oatmeal, look at the ingredients, figure out which one is best for your goals, like you can buy rice with 0 sodium, which you might want, or less fat than the other, or you might want more carbs..Just look it over and choose that yourself

Oh yea, about 2.3 ounce Sweet potato has 15g carb and about 70 calories, just incase you need to know to figure anything out

Well, I have a question for you? Is this for your carb load? Are you in carb deplete right now and if not, when do you start it? Are you working with a prep person?

Sorry about all the questions - I'm new to the board and don't know anyone's history or happenings yet. ;)

My carbs prior to my show consisted of oatmeal and sweet potatoes. Worked for me, I was able to get below the 6% mark. Good Luck!

Ya'll include the skin of your sweet potato? I'm going to assume that is where most of the vits/mins/fiber is at?

I usually RARELY eat sweet potato and usually ALWAYS substitute oats for sweet potato/rice/bread

I definitely kept the skin. I was so hungry that I ate every bit of it! ;) I had my first cup of brown rice in 10 weeks this morning, pretty darn tasty! ;)

Unfortunaly i don't have a trainer,i'm doing it all by myself, and i'm full of doubts really, yes, this question was more about the carb loading before the show, some people advise me rice cakes, other advise me yams and oatmeal, some other tell me sweet potatos and brown rice, well, they all carbs,so i will choose one source and try it,as long as i don't over consume them,i think i will be fine...

Oatmeal or Brown Rice?

As far as the GI values are concerned, they're all fairly similar.

I personnaly found that I do better (carbing up) on oatmeal rather than sweet potatoes. I use red potatoes up until the point I need to carb deplete though.

It's one of those things that may or may not work depending upon the individual.

How long do you have before your show? I found it very helpful to do a test run to see how I'd react when I was about 7 weeks out.

While dieting down, yams were my carb of choice. Oats and brown rice were a little too bloaty at the end for me. When carbing up, I used yams and banana on day one, white potato and banana on day 2, and white potato, raisins, granola (and french toast before the night show) on show day. This is very individual so if you have the time to play with it first, do it.

Layne reccomends not using wheat based carb sources for show day carb up because you could have a mild allergy that can cause water retention. Has anyone ever experienced this??

Carb loading is very individual. I loaded with high GI foods - per my prep guy.
