I'm so sorry, but this place seems a lot cleaner than the usual Misc. :o
I'm looking to buy a small A/C unit for my room. My room isn't that big, so a small one will do. I have no idea how much units go for these days at stores, but I'm looking for one that keeps my room cool at whatever temperature I can adjust it to, but I REALLY, REALLY want one that's SILENT! A super quiet a/c unit, if that's possible. Something that doesn't make that whirring fan noise every time you turn it on.
Any ideas?

I was going to do that as a resort for second opinions. The problem I have with that is them trying to rip me off or something, telling me to buy all these extra parts I don't even need.

i'd go to home depot, or whatever, see what they have. pick one in your price range and buy it. i can't really think of any parts you would have to buy. Just make sure it fits the window you are going to put it in and that the expanders on the unit will fit your window properly. keep your receipt.

go to a hardware store, get the smallest one you can find that meets your criteria. then get a sheet plywood the size of the opening of your window as the frame. you're gonna need a jigsaw or circular saw and a power drill

What are the mechanics of a quiet air conditioner, though? Is it just the fan quality?

Check out Target, Sears and Home Depot websites. For a small room, you should only need about 5,200 btu's - about $100 at Target.

thats why it is good to do it over the phone,
they have no drive to upsell you on it...
in the store they are trying to make a sale..a phone is a little less personal

Just my room. The room is about 400 sq. feet, I guess...I don't really care how the A/C is installed. The window or just putting it on the floor. I just want it to be silent.

i'm no electrician but you definitely have to measure your room before you buy the A/C. i learned that the hard way.
