I already have 20-50lb dumbbells but would like to purchase 60, 70, 80lb dumbbell sets. Unfortunately 'The Sports Authority' does not sell dumbbells over 50lbs (or am I wrong?).

I called other local sporting shops and they sell the dumbbells at more than 2X the price/lb as TSA. None of the used sporting goods store have dumbbells that heavy.

I figure it can't be cheapest to by them online due to shipping? Or is it?

So, what's the best way to find dumbbells greater than 50lbs?

Thanks,

Stephen

Do live in any particular city/state? I bet you get more suggestions if you specify your location.

Shipping on DBs is brutal, especially if you're talking about 60s, 70s, and 80s, which is 420 pounds.

And I guess you're talking about hex DBs? You might have an easier time getting individual plates and constructing them with plain handles. I like the ones that affix the plates with an Allen wrench bold, so they're like:

||-||

and not:

-||-||-

You know?

I have 15 through 60 on those, and it wasn't cheaper than a full set of hex, but it means that if I ever stop using a certain DB, I can deconstruct it and use the plates for something else.

And the plates and handles were easier to find, since all I needed was a ****load of 10s, and some 2.5s, 5s and 7.5s.

If you're already in need of DB's in the 70-80 lb range then it'll be no time before you get to the 100+ DB's. It's true that hex are the cheapest, but if you just can't seem to find any locally then do what zackmurphy suggested. Get the prostyle DB handles and buy a bunch of 10 lb standard plates. The most hex goes up to is probably about 120 lb and the prostyle goes all the way up to 200+ lbs. Just get a couple handle bars in the weight range that you need and buy only enough weights for the heaviest one. When ever you want to use the lighter one then deload the plates and load them onto the smaller bar. This may sound like a hassle but I save alot and it gives me something to do between sets. Check out the bars on this link.

Anybody know of a major fitness chain that carries those pro style dumbell handles in various lengths? I'm in NJ and I know Sports Authority, Modells and Dicks don't carry them. What about Omni Fitness?

I think I've seen higher than 50's at Gart Sports. You might want to try them.

Also, I know Sears sells hex dumbbells in their fitness section, but the heaviest I got from them was 45 lbs., so I don't know what they top out at.
