Hi all,

Just a brief intro about my issue.

I've been training in a martial art called 'Brazilian Jiu Jitsu' for the past 8-9 months (on and off). My first competition will be in a week from now (June 16th). This will be submission only and no punching/kicking. This isn't a boxing match or a MMA match, it's more like a wrestling match.

For anyone who has competed in said sport or any other sport; my question to you is...how do you keep yourself to stay focused, determined and ready for the competition come fight day. I have never been good in any other sport. Thus, my reason for asking how to remain focused. I've never been good with team sports because I always hate it when I let the team down. As for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), I have no one to blame except myself.

I am on Rippetoes program right now..and my strength has tremendously been increased. Can you guys also explain to me how to do HIIT properly? Is it running as fast as you can for like 10 seconds and jogging for 10 seconds then running as fast as you can again etc etc?

Yep, HIIT is basically a solid way of getting cardio in while minimising muscle loss, and it builds anerobic fitness which is good for most sports like Soccer, Rugby, Football and anything else with contact where the game is basically jogging with brief periods (10-15 secs) of sprinting (getting to a ruck in rugby, chasing a ball carrier in football etc.)

Anyone feel free to correct me if im wrong about what i wrote, im still learning

So a good HIIT workout might be:

4 minute warmup jog

Sprint 20 seconds
Jog 1-1.5 minutes

Repeat that 12 times, and then a 4 minute warmdown jog. Thats a fairly strong HIIT program, im doing 6 sets of the Sprint/Jog and building up to the 12.

alright! I'll give HIIT a shot...although, my body gets destroyed after doing it for like 3 sets. No Pain no Gain right? :)

having competed in quite a few jiu-jitsu/sub. grappling tournaments, the most important thing to control is your anxiety for your 1st tourney. its going to be tough, but remember to breathe (most people will forget...honestly)...and not try to blow all your endurance right away. i couldn't believe how tired i was after a minute; and realized it was the adreline dump from being nervous.

basically now i do alot of HIIT (run hard 1 minute..walk 1 minute) 3 times a week....longer bouts of cardio in the morning twice a week (usually half hour..this is only to help cut weight)....and lots of live grappling (usually like to grapple live 5x5 and 1x10 minute round....around 3 times a week...and about a month leading up to the tourney i'll roll live 5x a week)...lots of jumping rope and things like that also

i haven't gassed since my 1st tourney...and i attribute that be being better prepared and learning to relax.

the tourney is only a few days away, so you won't really increase your cardio all that much; focus alot on technique and drilling this week...i personally always like to relax and do light cardio/lifting week before a tourney.

remember to have fun...and its only a tourney; not life or death

maybe you'll come out w/ a medal...good luck
