Home gyms can be brilliant. To be honest the only machine you really need is a good lat pulldown. The power rack is the best piece of equipment you can invest in. It allows you to work out without the need for spotters. in addition to this all you will require is good barbell, set of dumbells (and plenty of plates) and a good quality adjustable bench. With this equipment you make make progress as good as if not better than you would in commerical gym.
Most commercial gyms (especially round where I am) don't have a power rack which is the best piece of workout equipment.
See www.hardgainer.com for more info.

I'm just starting mine out in my garage and I love it. There are a few trade off's, and for me the biggest challenge is probably going to be the temperature.
I think it will be vastly outweighed by being able to work out more often, to do what I want exactly without waiting and at what time day or night, and from letting me be more efficient with my workout time to have more time for family and other things.

You will not be disappointed with a power rack and a good bench.

I think that home gyms are great. It is working wonders, at least for me and my friend. I must say though that you will sometimes feel lazy to work out when you are alone not like when you go to a membership fitness center, you will feel more energized as you will see different people. I have my own treadmill, stationary bike, a bench and adjustable dumbbells. I just need these to keep in shape and build some of my muscles.

At the time another poster was doing the same thing and annoying people with like 5 year old posts, so I tried to find the first/oldest post ever made here and bump it with a useless comment to get the oldest bump...
But WT caught me...LOL.
