DW,
Box squats are looking better. For the front squats it is good that you can get low. I think you can benefit from getting your calves a bit looser though. There is a slight heel raise on your front squats. Looser calves will let you keep your heels driving through the ground = more weight.
One drill you can do is with an empty bar, grab the bar like you are about to front squat it. Then while keeping the bar in the same place, stretch your arms out in front of you like you are a mummy. Then do your front squats. If your positioning and flexibility is on, it will be easy after a while. Plus, it will transfer onto your working sets with weight. Check out the Dimas OL video floating around to see him hold the weight in this manner.
Sometimes when I am doing working sets of 3 in the front squat, I will do 2 reps regular, then for the third rep with my arms outstretched. But I haven't done this with more than 70% of my max weight.

Allow me to give you some tips on the hang cleans...
1. Start with the bar just above your knees.
2. Have your shoulders be in front of the bar (very different from a regular deadlift).
3. Pull the bar straight up your body. It should not go in front of you. If you look at how you catch the bar on the second one, you'll see that your elbows point toward the floor and your hands are a couple of inches from your shoulders. You want the bar to bascally go straight up and you should pull yourself down under the bar so you can catch it in the right position with your elbows high.
4. Try to pop the bar upward with your hips. It is perfectly fine for the bar to touch your body before it explodes upward.
5. The angle of your back at the start of the hang clean should be the same as the angle of your back when you first pull it off the floor. To get the bar up to your knees, you should pretty much just use your legs and your back should remain at a constant angle.
Lastly, I would drop the weight and work on form. Dead serious about this. Many O-lifters spend weeks when they start with a broomstick or empty bar mastering the correct form.

Good to see that you want to introduce some Oly lifts in your training, but like Heisman said, there is a lot of technique work to do. Considering that you are used to deadlifting with some rounding of the back, you will have to work on keeping a nice arch in your back during OL movements.

Front squats looking better. Try moving your grip out a bit and practice letting the bar roll to your fingertips. Your fingers don't bear the weight, they just hold the position while your clavicles/front delts bear the weight. It will make it easier to stay upright.
Check out this vid and watch his finger/wrist positioning.
By the way, this guy has the WR C&J. His fingers/wrists certainly couldn't handle this weight.

I brought my hands in a little closer yesterday during the ATG front squats and I think it felt better than the last few weeks. It just feels more natural for me like that.
Also, it looks to me like he was using wrist straps instead of the clean grip in that video. That's another method that people use besides the arms crossed and clean grip.

Are you asking about possible hamstring soreness from the box squats that I did not last lower body day, but the one before that? I don't remember that far back.
FYI, my hamstrings sometimes get sore from good mornings which is odd. That is pretty much the only thing that gets them sore, these days, I believe.

In the vid, he only has two fingers on the bar. If your grip width is more comfortable, stick with it. I used to use quite a narrow grip on cleans and after getting comfortable over time I use a wider grip. Remember not to let your elbow drop as you descend into the front squat.

Good squatting! Something I have learned over the years with box squats is try not to hug the box with your feet like that always keep your feet a fair distance in front of the box so that when you sit on the box your shins are angled more than 90 degrees with your upperleg(femur). This will give you a lot better leverage and work the hips, glutes, and hamstrings a lot more effectively. Good job and keep up the hard work.
Mateo_66
03-15-2006, 09:36 PM
On the hang cleans after you rack the weight(finishing postion) just drop it back down to your thighs(Dont bring it back down so slow). You can also pop your feet out to the sides a little bit(instead of chasing the weight forward). But dont pop them out to wide just to about your pressing stance for the log clean and press. Keep up the training man. Also was that a Metal Deadlift suit you was wearing in that deadlift video?

Try some just above knee rack deadlifts to try and correct that hitching habit. The heavier weight lifted in the rack deads might help to not hitch when you go from the floor. (you also look extremely strong from the floor). It could also double for grip work.

I wasn't trying to push press the 175; I wanted to jerk it, like I stated above, but it turned into almost a strict press. Lesson of the day: Always poo before a workout even if it's barely noticable. That feeling in my guts caused me to be just a bit off.

That really wasnt a continental clean as I thought the continental began off the belt or the the crook of the hips. That is what I call a "limbo" clean as you limboed back to rack it. Never do that dude it is really tough on the back. Learn to drop a little under the weight instead of using all upper body. I would do some dumbbell hang snatches(focus on dropping body under the weight) and dumbell hang cleans to perfect your form. Also you said the press had to be a jerk? I believe the jerk allows a foot to be thrusted back in an explosive movement, That looked more like a military press. Also I know the log press is a very akward movement I think it would be vital for you to get your hands on a Hammer curl bar or do Hammer curls as this is the position your hand is on the log correct?(Or it is from what I have seen) Good luck with your training dude. Hope I make sense and dont sound like I am blowing too much smoke out my @$$!;)

Try pulling the bar higher on the power clean and try to invlove more hips in the movement. On the press, take 2 secs at least to recover from the clean. Use your leg drive to get the bar up almost to lockout, and rely on your triceps to finish it. I have never been able to leg drive it all the way up, I always have to use my tris to achieve lockout.
This is my first look at your journal, some nice lifting going on. Subscribing.

DW, those are some ugly cleans man. If you wanna get the technique, you are going to have to humble yourself and lighten the weights. Check out fortifiediron.net and go to olympic lifting forum. Search for posts on cleans. You can even post a vid there for instructions. They helped me tons, especially since I have no coach.
Just to be clear: a split jerk and push press start with the same leg drive.
With a push press, after the leg drive you press it out.
With a jerk, after the leg drive you quickly split catching the weight overhead with arms locked. You are not allowed to press it out.
DieselWeasel
03-22-2006, 07:45 AM
yeah, the attempted press to 185
No, it was an attempted jerk with 185. You can see my legs split somewhat when I tried to jerk it.
Squats: You're wrong.
Heismann: I will try to work on that.
ukstrongman: Like I told bpp, it was a failed jerk with 185, not a press. I will probably try to push press 185, next push day. I don't know exactly why but I can seemingly press more than I can jerk, probably because of lack of technique and experience with the split jerk.
Mateo_66: Thanks for the advice. I still think that 185 clean was a continental. Yeah, the only two types of curl that I do is the dumbbell hammer curl and thickbar curl. FYI, I'm not training for the sole purpose of increasing my log press strength. I also want to get stronger with the barbell clean and press, thickbar clean+press and barbell bench press.
Krollmonster: I was banned from FI a while ago, so I can't go there for info. Thanks for the clarification regarding leg drive for both the split jerk and push press.

That's not a continental clean really. That's just wrong. Start the clean on the belt for a continential clean, since you wear a belt. if youre going to pull the bar up to your sternum or something, you might as well just powerclean it.

lol you know I mean no offense, but that wasnt close to a strict overhead press. I can pop a lot more, at least 20lbs, squatting that much down.
I just tried now on spur of moment to see the difference. 135 in 2 seconds or so compared to 135 in less than a second. Didnt bend down much either, so yeah.

I watched the video again. There was very little leg drive with the 175 press, much less than what I usually do with the log or thickbar. I'm not saying that it was 100% strict, but close to it.

good rack pull bro, way to fight it without hitching it all the way up..MUCH better! only advice id give is to start a bit closer to the bar, makes it easier for proper form to lock in sooner...when your away from the bar(shin wise) at the start like that its more comfortable, but also kinda forced too much lower back into it...great pull though
decent rows...I'd say arch your back a bit, and sit a bit higher body angle wise, in order to allow more room with the lower ROM
lastly, why do you wear a belt for GM's? it seems you're becoming overly reliant upon wearing the belt...the entire point OF gm's is low back/hamstring work, so why wear the belt?
also, the funny thing about the vid squats posted...it just shows you've come along way in alot of exercises..keep it up

DW, seems like you do most of your lifting with a rounded back (back squats, deads, gms). I think you should practice lifting with your back arched too...such as on SLDL or good mornings. Do them just moving at the hips and the chest out. It will blow up your hammies. If you don't get better at keeping your back arched, you are gonna have a tough time getting better at cleans. Rack pulls looking good.

I thought that I was closer to the bar when I did the rack pull. I will try to work on that.
The t-bar row w/ barbell is definitely a badass exercise.
I use a belt for my last set or two of GMs because I thought most people do that.
Krollmonster: I try to keep my back arched but it's difficult when the weight gets heavy.

watched it a second time you did move closer than you originally stood, so its not too bad, but can always be closer :D
nah, I never wear belt for those....belt only goes on for heavy overhead pressing, squats, deadlifts..thats about it
and never for any higher rep heavy work...belt further cuts off ability to breath, so for anything like conans, etc, it hurts you to wear it due to the airflow
Krollmonster: I try keep my back arched but it's difficult when the weight gets heavy.
but especially in training, develop those muscles and support instead of usin the belt too much

Just keep the weight where you can stay tight.
It just takes practice. Since I OL I am very good at keeping a tight arch, but I couldn't lift $hit with my back rounded.

Nice rack deads dude! I would prolly move the pins up one more height and do at least 5 reps working up to 420-450 to destroy that hitching delima. Focus on pushing the hips through the lift.(Should almost look like your humping the bar) You round your shoulders very well.(This is a good thing because it elongates your arms shortening the range of motion which is what you want to lift maximal weights). Your lower back looked pretty tight throughout the rack lift. Also on the Goodmornings the form looked perfect and the depth looked plenty good you could prolly even go a little higher. Also a belt aint bad to wear on your heaviest sets of goodmornings but shouldnt be used for your lighter sets.(Sure you prolly know that) Was that the long sleeved "Powerlifting-world's strongest sport" shirt form elitefts? I want one of those!

Yeah, I'm not going to wear the belt when I do any of my GM warmup sets.
Yes, I was wearing that EliteFTS 3/4 sleeve shirt along with a white long sleeve shirt underneath it. I also have and wear the Metal baseball cap and the Darkside beanie which I'm currently wearing as I type this.

Hey, 225 is hardcore! ;)
The entire point is that I'm not too proud to admit when I need to work on my form. Deadlifts are one of the most difficult exercises to perform correctly. And you're not doing it even close to right--you've never even bothered to learn the basics of the lift, Diesel. Your knees are buckled in, your back is rounded before you even lift the weight, your chest is sucked in......its like you're not even doing a deadlift. It looks more like a drunken marriage of the barbell row and good morning. Your legs don't even look like they're working at all....
I honestly believe that this "use whatever means necessary to get the weight up" attitude of yours affords a person about 100lbs more than what they're capable of doing with proper form. Take what the other 947 members here are saying to heart and drop the ego. Served.

I'd say I came across as a lot more mature than your cock smokin' buddy. He stuck me with everything from mama jokes, to the e-coward gig, to even telling me to meet him in Queens so he could "put me in the hospital." Diesel really is sophomoric humor, at its worst.

And lets' not forget, I IM'd this guy to give him some advice. Honest to God, I assumed this guy simply did not know better. He got defensive and thats how this entire argument started.
I'm sure you'll just respond to that paragraph by "loling" because a guy who deads 225 with good form had the "audacity" to correct your butt pal here..
And where exactly did I "get it." Diesel basically stormed out of our conversation in a rage, having spat out jokes that would make a 16-year-old cringe and threatening to put me in the hospital. All the while, I had his 485x1 deadlifting video playing in the background, laughing myself into a coma.

Push Press wasn't bad, but the clean was horrible. Now that you got a 45 and 25 on each side, are you gonna actually learn the techniques that will lead to using much more weight? Or will you fall into the ego trap?

I don't support the **** form he's been using in his cleans and presses and deadlifts and squats, but I told him what he needs to fix, and how to do it. His form has improved in his deadlifts because he took the time to listen to our advice. It's just, with all the years of ****ty form, its hard to overcome his bad habits. It's not as easy as it looks to just have better form from reading it on line. If he had somebody instruct him in person, his form would improve rapidly.

Highly doubtful.
Diesel, you started the powerclean with your back rounded. It must be straight. Your arms still bend WAY too early. Your first pull is also way too fast. You should pull your body under the bar so it will land on your shoulders; you shouldn't upright row it to "catch" it. Right when the bar leaves the ground, your legs are almost extended while your back is almost parallel to the ground. You want to keep the same angle between your back and the ground until you begin your second pull.
If you have learned anything from the past many, many months of being critiqued, you should know that you need to go light and learn the form. Most O-lifters spend weeks using just a broomstick or an empty bar to learn the correct form. I used bad form (still better than yours) and couldn't get anything more than 185 for a year. Than I fixed my form and a couple sessions later used 215. I made more improvements in two weeks than I had in a whole year. GET IT?

Then prove it. Take a vid of yourself doing powercleans with just the bar with good form. Then take a vid of yourself doing powercleans with 65 pounds with good form. Then 85 pounds with good form. Then 105 pounds with good form. Personally, I do technique work with 135 and can powerclean at least 215 (haven't attempted more weight), and I still have a ton of bad habits to try to unlearn.
Earlier today I put all of the ironmind vids up on youtube.com. They haven't been processed yet, but they'll probably be up there tomorrow. I HIGHLY suggest you watch all of them, multiple times.

Strongman competitors use suits. Jesse Marunde does that and I'm pretty sure many others do the same thing. Do you read MILO? The current issue has an article about him in which it states that he uses a squat suit in his training for his top set(s).

I workout once per day, three days (push, pull, legs) per week. When I start training grip again, it will be four days per week. It's probably going to be soon because I haven't had any pain in my right arm for a while, even during the last few push sessions.

The 385 it looked like your spotter helped you out of the hole. You got bent over too far. You should try widening your stance out a little bit to get more out of the suit. Also try putting the bar a little lower on your back this should help you not to lean over so bad. Other than that everything else looked pretty good. Depth was for sure low enough. Also I think I may be correct but not for sure I think Metal suits are better for medium to wide stance squatters. If you prefer a close stance you might try a TItan suit as I see most close stance squatters using them.

My spotter actually just put his hands on my chest. He didn't assist in the lift.
The suit I'm wearing (Metal IPF Squatter) is designed for narrow stance squatters. The V-Type variant is the suit meant for wide stance squatters. Here is the direct link to the EliteFTS webpage where I bought the suit:

The pins are a final safety measure, but the spotter comes first if anything goes wrong.

Thing that strikes me about [all the vids of yours that I watched] was the last-second adjusting of headphones. I hate when they're in funny or fall out mid-set or something.

Yeah, that's why I have a habit of adjusting it. ;)

EliteFTS has a winter clearance sale. If I only get one pair of bands for the reverse band deadlift, which should I buy? My current 1RM is 475 and I need to work the lockout.

DW, set the rack pins higher man. As low as they are they won't help as much.

OK. That sounds like a good idea. I will probably do my rack pulls from the 3rd pin instead of the 2nd pin.

Oh, I meant to say during squats. Start squatting with just the bar and see how long you will be going. Then set the pins a little below that to catch you if you get stuck in a squat.

That is some good advice some Mateo. Widen out your stance and build up your hips. Also, on the t-bar rows, use 35 and 25 to get a further rom. And GMs looked good.
