Great job at the contest. Were there alot of people and did you get to see any professional strongmen there, or was it an amateur-only contest?

Thanks.

There weren't too many people there. The more popular contest, Strongest Man in Pittsburgh is in April. Both contests have the same events and poundages.

It was an amateur contest, so there were no pros there.

I didn't do as well as I had hoped, but I definitely busted out some cool PRs. I placed 4th out of four. However, one of the guys was actually ~180 which means that he should've been a middleweight instead of a lightweight.

Maybe you should consider bulking up to 180 or so. You could probably gain strength by leaps and bounds with the extra muscle mass.

- 3rd or 4th place in this event (TBA)

cool video diesel.

the tire flips were funny when the tire would roll on the rim and spin up.

i liked ur little strut on the last keg :) the kegs looked grueling

on the log press arent u allowed to bounce it off the tire, im sure u could of cleaned it if u bounced it into the tire to get some dat momentum

The tire popping back up and rolling was -not- funny! That probably cost me a few precious seconds.

You're right about the kegs. That **** was brutal. I felt terrible after that.

I don't think any bouncing off the tire was allowed during the log press event. I didn't see anyone else doing that.

few things:
if you had tried what I told you to do for weeks on the log, you would've cleaned it...thats the entire point of turning it is to make the clean easier at the end of the clean motion

farmers was good from the video

DL was good, tho it looked like you had more in you than 12

tire wobbling was a result of not pushing hard enough/square on the tire...dont get lazy on the shove, a good shove on every flip will take off 1-2 flips that you have to do total....also work on the form, use your knee on the way up

Yeah, but when I did the log press, I was a little nervous and rushed too. As you can see in the video, I didn't even have time to put on my belt and elbow sleeves.

The tire wobble was frustrating and I now know what the problem was. I read on the Brute Strength board that I should be guiding it down to prevent the wobble.

UPDATE
I got the results from Gary Udit, the guy who runs the Strongest Man in Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh contests. There was actually an error in the scoring and he agreed with me that there should've been a tie for 3rd place between me and my friend, Alex. So it looks like I placed 3rd instead of 4th in the Novice Lightweight division.

It's not possible at this point in time for me to obtain a tire. I'm going to try to train tire flipping with a guy in Jersey.

Yeah, I do some stretches (mostly quads, hams, calves) and then one warmup set and then the 20 rep attempt whenever I do high rep squats. I warmup a lot more when I try to do a max effort squat.

I also tried to do a clean and press with the 32.5lb York blob, but I still can't do that. So instead, I did a few deadlift and hold sets with that weight. Here is one of the shorter holds:

Not to be too much of a D-bag after such a long time of not talking to you, but what on God's green earth made you think that you would be able to lift 30lbs more than your already-established max on the log press only a couple weeks after you did that max lift? How did you plan to accomplish that?

Or did they have a set weight that everyone had to use?

Good log press. Almost up to 180. I have put on ten pounds in 5 weeks, on two separate occasions. But I have genetics to be over 200, all the men in my family are 220-240 without lifting. If you keep gaining 10 pounds a year, you'll get there. Just keep at it.

Nice log clean bro!!

You should look up and study the form for continental clean. It's sort of like what you did, but could probably let you lift way heavier weight.

Check this: http://www.rdsdesigns.com/misc/cont.wmv

I'm not sure if this type of clean can be done with the log, but I think it's do-able with the axle anyways.

DieselWeasel
10-13-2005, 12:26 PM
Radok: Yeah, that's strange.

UnlimitedSteel: That looks different than the other continental cleans that I've seen in the past.

10/12/05 - Event Training

This was the first day that I used straps. I'm using straps for high rep deadlifts because I'm at a disadvantage if I don't use them, considering the majority of other competitors use straps when they do the deadlift for reps in competition.

Deadlift
135x8
225x6
325x13 in 60 seconds (+1 rep)
video: http://media.putfile.com/max_dead_325x13

- I also made myself a 100lb sandbag today (10/13) and to test it, I shouldered it once on each shoulder. It seems like it's a good size. If it becomes too easy, I will add another 50lbs of sand.

most strongman contests will NOT allow you to rest on the belt however, and it doesnt really work with the log

Don't forget to practice cleaning logs as well. The stronger your clean, the more strength you will have reserved for the actual press.

Thanks. I did that 325x12 deadlift without straps because I never used them. Now, I'm using straps in training and I did 325x13, last week:

True, most strongman events don't rely on chest strength. However, there are two reasons that I still work my chest:

1) I train for overall strength, from head to toe; not just strength for strongman competitions.

2) The incline dumbbell press is supposed to help my log press strength.

You should shoot for 150 for 10. That would land you at around 200 for a 1 rep max. The 180 wouldn't be too hard next time around. I really need to work on overhead strength, I haven't done any strongman stuff yet, but it still would be good to do.

My friend, Alex cleaned it once, but couldn't press it. The other two guys pressed it 2-4 reps.

There's no point squatting high, if you ever have to do a squat event in strongman you won't be able to squat high, it's judged as strictly as powerlifting in my experience. Take off some weight and do things properly.

Also take off the knee wraps, build some raw strength.

I wouldn't say that it was high, but it wasn't parallel either. I'll try to go lower, next squat day.

I only wear knee wraps when I use near maximal weight. For example, I don't use them when I do high rep sets, like my last high rep squat PR of 250x16.

Why do you put on the knee wraps? Do you get pain in your knees without them? If so, maybe you should try to work some ATG squats into your lifting, I find them excellent for strengthening the connective tissue in the knee.

No, I never had much pain in my knees in the past. They're worn to prevent any knee pain/injuries in the future.

Good, you need to go much lower. Try squatting down to a 13" box for a while to get an idea of good depth, and to gain some consistency in your depth. It will cut some serious poundage off of what you're doing, so you'll have to swallow your ego. Show me a video of you doing 300lbs off a 13" box without knee wraps and you'll get a lot more respect from the experienced lifters on this board, than a high 370 with wraps. But more importantly it will make you a hell of a lot stronger than high/wrapped squats ever will.

Wraps do not protect your knees, simple as that. I've squatted 660lbsx3 without knee wraps, the vast majority of PL's never wear knee wraps in training, westside make a point of never wearing knee wraps. In the end you're wearing knee wraps because it gives you extra poundage, and boosts your ego. The protecion thing is just a way of justifying it to yourself and to us. You do not need knee wraps, lose them.

..and this kind of thing is exactly why this board will never amount to anything in terms of actually making people stronger or helping them to achieve. You'll work it all out once you grow up.

10/29/05 - Grip

I did way too many different exercises/lifts instead of focusing on one or maybe two. The workout sucked besides the ATB pass which was the first exercise that I did. Everything after that (IM hub, levering and bending) was crap.

Incline Dumbbell Press

80s x 7 (+5lbs)

It looks like my right arm is the stronger arm in that video, especially during the last rep.

partly because of the "unfair" advantage your right arm gets when you shift/tilt your bodyposition aswell as involving the right delt a whole lot more than the left (i would think) :)

i have the same problem on the flat bb bench the last few reps. but not when i use an open grip for some reason (go figure...)

The idea of it is to tax you so that when you are on your 3rd pull at the meet, after squatting and benching, you are in condition to make your lift.

I've done this cycle many times and have modified it a bit now to suit my needs. I did drop the SLDL right from the start though because I don't like them.

If you do this in conjunction with the Coan squat routine, it works well as there is a ton of assistance on the deadlift day but hardly any on the squat day.

It's pretty straightforward, just go up 20lbs a week to your target single. Assistance is pause squats and some adductor work. I do it for meets by doing 1 set of squats, 1 set of high box with 50lbs more than the work weight, and 1 set of pause squats, and don't worry about the adductor stuff.

Best Deadlift Hitch Ė Iím not sure of the web address but this video has been floating around the internet for awhile and has probably been e-mailed to you. If the lore is correct, the owner of the Most Profound Deadlift Hitch belongs to an internet character that is dubbed the ďDiesel Weasel.Ē Iím not sure if thatís his given name or something that has been bestowed upon him by his internet admirers. Whatever the case, this fellow is what keeps chiropractors in business and people shaking their heads at gyms. This video is perhaps the worst form of any lift Iíve ever seen. Whatever could have been done poorly was done to the 10th degree. I almost admire his ability to make things worse. Iím guessing that this is a joke, but have been informed that he has several videos roaming around that showcase his ability to remain healthy even if performs an exercise that is the weight room equivalent of a car crash.

So you're overhead pressing near BW for reps?? Awesome! :)

I had challenged a friend sometime back to lift and overhead press 125 pounds on a standard bar. He laughed at me and said it was no problem.

The challenge of course was to lift the weight without bending the knees or moving the feet in any way whatsoever THEN press the weight overhead (it was a lift in a book I read). He said it was going to be a piece of cake.

Well, he tried the weight and FAILED (i.e., he couldn't get the weight to his shoulders). I took the same weight and repped it overhead 8 times.

I need to get a steel log like you have. Glad to see you're lifting that thing and putting it to good use... what is the weight of that thing empty? And if I may ask - where did ya get it?? :)

You've also neg repped me before. I called you out on it because your reson for negging me was that I was a newbie to the board and I disagreed with an opinion you had. You sent me this PM:

"I never threatened you. The fact is you are a little bitch that barely pulls a bar and you feel threatened by every strong word. Get over yourself. I neg rep people who I think deserve it. YOU did deserve it. Face it. Here, you are a nwbie and newbs are expected to speak with respect and humility to senior members not to run their mouths and then cry like a bitch that they got a neg rep. Grow up."

Why the hell would anyone speak to you with respect and humility? You've got quite an inferiority complex to demand that I humble myself in your scrawny presence.

So now you tell me. Who's the troll? Who's the immature child? Who is it that deserves every neg rep given to him? Who is it that can't handle getting a neg rep without sending one back and then following it up with a nasty PM? You're not looking too good, troll.

Seriously though DW, I didnt neg rep you ater the neg rep because I know that maybe Im out of line in this thread.

But after watching your vids, I just need to know. Do you really NOT see a probem with your form? People have pointed it out, now a serious PROFESSIONAL in this sport has written an article where he names you as someone with he worst form he has EVER seen. So, why do you continue down this road to serious injury?

Jim Wendler saw only ONE of my videos. I uploaded many others after that one which he did not see that weren't as severe in regards to the form.

Why do I continue down this "road to serious injury"? I'm on the highway to hell, baby!

EDIT: BTW, when did I ever BRAG about any of my videos?

Riiiiight.

One of the most childish posters in the PL section is saying that someone as friendly and helpful as John Hicks has "ruined the forum?"

I neg repped you for being a disrespectful dick to Travis O. You deserved it, and I'm sure anyone else in this section would agree with me on that one. You're the one that sent me a childish reply of

"OH NO..I was disrespectful..Shiove it somewhere where the sun dont shine. And dont stick your nose in other people's arguments. Now o and kiss up to Travis."

TYou SHOULD keep going, and you should tell us hat prompted my pm to you then. But you wont because you would be too ashamed to show it. You were acting like a noob troll, pure and simple.

As for Travis O, that was between me and him, it in no way involved you.

What could possibly be -your- problem with a pro strongman? You miserable bitch.

Travis to me is nothing. I really dont respect him, and I sure as hell dont respct his arrogance. This is a guy who states that he will be easily beating Pudzianowski in a year. He is also an IFSA lackey, and to me, theres nothing worse. Except your form.

You're just upset because Travis dares to be the best, at the expense of your lover, Mariusz. :D

No, nothing wrong with that. But writing obvious lunacies is what Travis was doing.

Looking good, despite not having time to do all three circuits (and sldls). And I agree w/ the earlier posts on how stressful those sldls can be.... so far for me, it's the hardest part of the workout

Yeah, hopefully I will have more time, next week.

UnlimitedSteel: It wasn't too difficult. It's not going to be tough until either next week or the week after that.

Yeah, I'll try the standing press with the 150 bag soon. I did 9 reps with the 100 bag, last time.

It's a U.S. Army duffel bag from basic training.
