Howdy everyone. Today was a learning experience. I gained priceless knowledge that can only be gained through experience. Before I get into my thoughts about the contest, let me tell you what I learned:
1) Just because something worked for someone else does not mean it will work for you. This is especially true for the final week leading up to the contest. You must find what works for yourself through trial and error. I think this is one of the reasons bodybuilding is a life long sport. It takes years to learn how your body will react to different things. What I learned today about how my body reacts to certain foods and timing of foods will help me in the future.
2) Hitting your peak condition is harder than I thought. I look better right now at 12 AM than I did on stage...
3) Bodybuilding is a great sport. This contest was just like the other past contests I've entered in that everyone is so friendly. No one tries to sabotage you or talks about you behind your back. Everyone is there to give advice, share food and experiences, and to have a good time. Though I did not place, which is disappointing, I had a good time. I got to talk to people I meet last year as well as meet to people. You build friendships through a bond of the love of bodybuilding.
While it would have been nice to place, I am not disheartened, but more motivated than ever. Bodybuilding is not about winning trophies or titles, it is about making consistent improvements. I weighed 7 pounds more this year than last year. That is a great improvement for a year's work.
This contest also really makes me want to do the bulking section. I have BEAST TRAINING 1.0 all written up and just about ready to go. I will email Ryan and see what the down low is. No matter what I will post the program, because as I said, bodybuilding is all about helping other. I will also restart my journey, but not for about 13 weeks. I am just going to train hard for the next 12 weeks and get back into the groove. Then I'll take a week off an regroup, then start the journey back up. I just need a mental break from it right now.
I was going to post my thoughts about the contest, but you know what, it really doesn't matter. I will post some pics either tomorrow or Monday. I look forward to working with those who want my help.
Thank you all for the support and encouragement over the past 15 weeks. I know there were somes where I lost my cool or wasn't the as friendly as I should have been. If I offended anyone, I am sorry. See, I'm nice after I've had my carbs :D
Again, thanks for all the support. This is what bodybuilding is all about, helping one another become the best we can be!

hey beast,
just wanted to chime in and say thanks for all the knowledge that you imparted to us and congrats on your improvements, even though you did not place as well as you would have liked. I think that this has been a great experience, both for all of us reading and for you. You have gained a great amount of knowledge that will no doubt serve you well in the future. As for helping people out, I know that I have gained knowledge from reading this section and that countless others have also gained a great deal from it. Thank you for spending the time to do this section, I think that it will beneft you in the future. I look forward to seeing your future posts about your diet/routine and one day to seeing your Poliquin like strength training center! Thanks again.

dont worry about it Derek, bodybuilding is like wine, you only get better with age!(to a point of course) i'm sure the guys who beat you probably just had that maturity on u. At least you learned something about ur body and will be ready to take first next time!

Yup, experience is key in everything. Regardless of what the judges did, you look great, and like this whole board can attest to that. You've given me a lot of knowledge these past few weeks, and I really appreciate it. I'm looking forward to seeing you next year, and even bigger.

Awesome attitude to have buddy. I felt very similar to the way you're feeling last weekend when I placed 6th in my division (teens). What you learn from competition about your body and about yourself is far more important in the greater scheme of things than getting a good placing (even though that's nice too hehe). You'll take what you learned this time around and apply it later in your bodybuilding career maybe to help you peek if you're ever going for a pro card. Your dedication, knowledge, and freaky ass legs :D will take you as far as you want to go in bodybuilding. Congrats on coming in heavier and in better condition than you were a year ago. That's amazing results there buddy, and you should be proud of that. Now, GO EAT SOMETHING!! But don't do like I did and eat EVERYTHING that you've wanted to eat over the past 15 weeks of cutting all in one week (I look like crap right now lol). When else can your waist go from 29" to 32.5 in one week? hehehehe Later.

Beast, your attitude toward the contest results should be a model for others on this board. While I admire your physique, I think I admire your mindset even more.
You will go far in this sport!

Well, he would have been competing in the men's division, so I'm sure there was. My friend who just recently turned 20 competed in the men's division last weekend (he also won the teen division last summer in the same competition), but because he now had to compete in men's novice middleweight, he was dwarfed in size (he was just as lean as any of them though).

to have someone achieve the impossible, just tell them they're too short, too heavy, too weak or:
"your physique looks weird.... the proportions are not aesthetic.... you'll have to admit to yourself at some point that you simply don't have the genetics to go far in bodybuilding."
that would get my juices flowing and I'm far from being " Beast"
Beast, congrats on what you achieved.

Hey Beast,
My wife, son and I drove from Grand Rapids to see the show in Redford. The competition did seem pretty good. Although, we thought you should have been in the top 3 and maybe top 2. Beyond that, I couldn't tell because the competition was so good. The winner was big. I can understand why he was drug tested. But, his legs weren't up to par with his upper body?
Derek was cut to the bone and had a good posing routine. However he wasn't the hometime favorite. Derek, did you notice how even some of the less conditioned (weak) competitors got wild applause and screams? I wonder how much that has to do with the judging? Maybe nothing, but Dereck should have been placed higher, IMO.
Keep up the good work

its kind of good that you lost.
hear me out first though.
i mean, what good is a story if you won all the time? how will your bodybuilding biography be if it just said...
" i started bodybuilding, got a great physique and won every contest i got into until i became champion"?
not that fun to read is it?
now all you need to do is get shot a few times, have a near death experience, and then when the nationals all in a few months. :D

the only thing you need to really focus hard on is your proportions and symmetry. bodybuilder is not just about who is the most massive guy on the stage. you just have to balance out your physique a bit and you'll be right there. like i said in my post before, the legs are a bit much.
you should look for different excercises to bring out the traps more.... my personal experience on this is that conventional excercises sometimes wont get the job done. for me, my traps were crap until I started doing bent over lateral raises and really squeezing and focusing on working my traps. sometimes just throwing in an isolation movement like that will make all the difference.

Hey Derek,
I was there at the competition and what a group of light heavies! I only was able to make the prejudging. I take it #82 won. He was huge. There is no way that he accomplished that body natural. But what can you do! Great job!

Derek, to win this class you need to add more muscle mass thats mean 2-3 years of bb.If you compete in a lighter class you have more chance to win.
Anyway good luck for the next contest....
