Is there any way to avoid getting shin splints all the time from football practice? After one practice my shins are as stiff as an 80 year old man and it doesnt go away for 5 days or more. this totally ruins practice for me cause I can't run or move with any quickness.

Actually there are ways to prevent and treat shin splints. Does your team have a trainer? If so ask him how to get rid of them he'll know if he's a good trainer...

screw i'll tell ya...
1. Make sure you have good cleats/turf shoes...
2. If you get cuz of practice you arent warmed up enough when you starting bangin/running. Stretch before practice ( I had this problem too)
3.Get pleny of rest at night and on weekends (dont over train)
4.Stretch good after practice, take a short walk/jog to cool down.
5.Use good running form
6.Add toe lifts to your workout
7.Ask trainer if he has a toe lift thingy(not sure what theyre called but look like a half circle that you stand on and it helps stretch the front of your calf)
Do all these and you should be in good shape.

Forgot to add that a short Ice massage on the shins does help...and remember if the pain is that bad then maybe you should sit out a practice or 2. I looked up what shin splints actually were and this is what i found:
Shin splints are an inflammation or injury to the shin muscles themselves
inflammation or injury to the tough tissue, called the periosteum, that covers the surface of the shin bone
inflammation or injury to the tendons that attach the shin muscles to the shin bone swelling of the shin muscles inside the tight connective tissues in the lower leg.
Theres tons of info out there on it...just use any search engine and use shin splints as search.

I take 3 IBProfen before practice which usually helps.

if possible you should wear sneakers to practice instead of cleats.
there are also sleeves that you can get that go around your leg..they are sort of like neoprene.....do toe straightening exercises and you can ice them after your practice....
i used to have them but i grew out of them...but most of this stuff help to minimize the damage when i did have them
