Hey y'all,
In basketball here in Memphis, TN, it is extremely competitive, and I am one of the short guys, so that makes it just that much harder for me to try to make my varsity basketball team or even just compete well in pick-up games. So...if anybody out there has "sports training" tips for basketball such as: helping ball-handling, increasing vertical jump, ways to get the ball/getting open, etc.; please post here; i would really appreciate it! Thanks.

I would also like to know some drlls to better my ball handling skills. Right now im a decent shooter but cant drible for sh!t. Some drlls for a better handle, better side to side (defense) movement, and soem conditionng for BBall.

I am a former basketball player myself, and everything came to me with practice. You got to practice and I doubt reading online would help you at all except for training your vertical jumps.

For vertical jumps, I recommend you using plyometrics. Read here http://www.brianmac.demon.co.uk/plymo.htm

For anything else, only practice.

I agree with Jean- practice practice practice.
I know how you feel I play in a adult church league. Im only 5'9" no ball handle skills here. If your quick you can always get open getting someone to see you-not so easy. To gain in your vert. polymetrics is the way to go. Look into the jumpsoles program (JUMPUSA.COM) it has worked wonders for my brother. He gained 4-5" in the first 5 weeks. He's at a flat spot now,but I think he lost some of his training intensity.
keep it up you'll go far

Gain 3-5 inches to his height in 5 weeks. Wow. I am going to try that program right away. I wanna be 6'4. I am 6'2 right now.

How nice it would be to gain that much height with a program.I haven't found one yet, but jumping that much higher is almost as good. Getting the boards is about position and strength, good leaps dont hurt!

the best way to get open for a pass that i use, is to move straight toward your check and poke him in the stomache with your finger then complete the Vcut back toward your partner

the only way to get better handles is too dribble and dribble and dribble and dribble and dribble and dribble and dribble and dribble and dribble and dribble and u get the picture, eyes closed, one hand tied behind your back etc

yeah man it might sound stupid but its the only way, take a ball with you wherever you go and if your alone or sitting or something just dribble ... i know a guy who has handles like a globetrotter and when he grew up as a kid he would have spent more time dribbling the ball than taking shots, now he is a backup PG playing Pro here in Australia

man the best way to learn how to dribble is to play with kids that are better then you, faster, quicker, have more skillz...and when ur playing with them just try moves and try to drive on them..ur gonna get denied over and over chances are but sooner or later ull get it down.

If you are shorter then then other guys jump higher you should be training with a crap load of cardio and plyometrics with at least an hour of basketball a day. I know how you feel bro. So that is why I am going to help you. do 45 minutes of cardio a good 40 minutes of weightlifting and 20 minutes of hardcore plyometrics and an hour of basketball hope this helps you.

yea i also play basketball and plan to go to some junior college to play here in a few years
Iv been to a few camps over the apst summer and I even went to Italy to play for 2 weeks last summer
Some dribbling drills i have done that have helped me out is start and one end of the court and dribble with your right hand all the way up to foul line to half court/outerbounds line back to foul line then back to end line/outerbounds line and at each line do a differnt move like between the legs or a spin or behind the back or something and then come back the other side and do the same thing but with your left hand

And like everyone else has already said Practice is the main key
Just keep on working at it and working at it and u can only get better
And some advice that I have for everyone out there.
Always play with people who are better than you casue it will only make you a better basketball player.
