I wanted to change my powerrack with a smith machine ( from powertec ) . But those aren't available anymore . I saw a shop here in europe that still sells that equipment .

I have a full set of dumbbells ( to compensate the fixed motion of the smith ) .

The primary thing that i hate about the rack is the fact that when i change positions to incline / decline or whatever exercise i am doing i need to always change the bar holders + the safety bars and it's kind of awkward .

So i will get a smith machine OR a smith /rack combo .

Even if 90 % of the people here hate smith machines , i think is very useful for : Calves + shoulder press + incline press ( because it isolates better )

If i had the space i would kept BOTH the rack and the smith . Put them one behind , and the other in front of it , i think it will be a real cool combination .

Something like : Powerrack > Smith > dumbbell rack ALL in a straight line .

My dream home gym is the HOIST model with all the accesories ...but is something like 7000 $ ....:(

If you are determined to get a smith machine, why not go with this: http://www.ironmaster.com/store/IM2000-Base-pr-87.html

The powertec smith machine is discontinued.

I like the bodysolid one, smith and freeweight :

Thats probably the primary reason why most people DONT recommend a smith machine.

The trend now is to perform movements which incorporate the stabilizer muscle(s).

With that said, do what ya like. :D Have you considered a leverage machine?

I will NOt use just the smith , i will combine it with free weights . However ... i didn't test the leverage machines yet so i don't know if those are better or worse than a smith machine .
