Derek,

I have read many of your articles where you have both promoted and faulted the MAX-OT Training program. A few of the newer ones, I not actually sure on how recent they are, but you stressed how you beleived that this was the best and most efficent way to train and to follow it to a T. In the program they stress how isolation exercises are basically pointless because defintiton will come with fat loss and not isolation. Have you experienced otherwise because I notice in a recent post of yours that you stressed now that you have the desired mass that you are focusing more on isolation and getting away from the program.

Also, what are your thoughts on doing cardio in the morning with only a protein shake in your system 15 minutes before. Think this will be effective for fat loss.

Your opinions are appreciated.

Isolation exercises do just that, isolate a specific muscle. Isolation exercises can be very useful and effective. If you are stimulating a muscle beyond what it is accustomed to plus giving it the needed substrate to grow, it will grow. This goes for both isolation and compound exercises. The bulk of my routine is comprised of compound exercises. Why? Because they allow you to handle more weight and hence activate more motor units.

MAX-OT does indeed incorpate isolation exercises. For example, DB Side Laterals and Bent over Rear Laterals. Both a implemented to hit a specific head of the deltoid. If isolation exercises were useless, why do both Jeff Willet and Skip La Cour do both of these exercises? Why just just do all military presses?

I have never said I have hit my desired mass level. I am simply cutting for a competition, which means my focus is on fat loss. I will certainly be trying to gain mass when these competitions are over.
