Notes:
I think I did ok today :D, got a PR in every workout! My bench is going nuts... I'm hoping to put up 245lbs for max in 2 weeks. That would be a 30lbs increase in about 1 month! On my second set of incline bench I think I died or something, I dunno, it's all good though. Dips were VERY tough, CG bench felt good. Skullcrushers also felt very good.

What is your primary goal? Size? Strength? little bit of both?
Either way, love the down to basics approach with the routine.

5/20/04 (UpperBack/Biceps)
Pullups bw(6), 20(6, 6, 4) PR (5lbs)
Chins 20(5, 4)
BB Rows 70(10), 140(6, 6) PR (5lbs)
EZ Bar Curls 80(5, 3)
Hammer Curls 35s(4, 3)
This was a good workout, I upped the weight in all the lifts 5lbs, but I only count PRs if I get atleast 1 full set of 6 reps. I was kind of mad at some of the sets I only got 3 reps with since my rep range is supposed to be 4-6 but it's all good. Still a great workout :D.

5/21/04 (Shoulders/Calves/Abs)
DB Press 30s(10), 65s(6, 5, 4) PR (5lbs)
Laterals 30s(6, 4)
BB Shrugs 135(10), 225(6, 6) PR (10lbs)
Standing Calf Raises 100-260(8), 100(17)
Seated Calf Raises 45(17)
Incline Crunches bw(12), 45(8, 8)
Good workout... I think I'm going to lower the weight for my laterals back down to 25lbs because I don't have the best of form right now. Shrugs felt good, I will probably up them another 10lbs next workout. For calves I'm trying a new thing I somewhat made up by reading peoples opinions and whatnot. The 100-260(8) part I did addsets (like drop sets but adding weight). I do one set after another with a short 10sec rest in between each. I started at 100lbs with 8 reps and continued to up the weight 40lbs each time untill I wasn't able to complete 8 full reps, which was at 260lbs this time. Then I took about 1min break and did 100lbs as many times as I could, once I am able to do 100lbs 25x I will up the weight. Then I did 1 set of seated calf raises for as many times as I could, max 25x etc... It was interesting and hopefully it works well. I ended the workout with weighted crunches which were pretty easy.

5/24/04 (Thighs/LowerBack)
Squats 135(10), 225(5, 5, 4)
Front Squats 170(6, 6) PR (5lbs)
Leg Curls 40(10), 90(6, 5) PR (10lbs)
SLDL 135(10), 210(6, 6) PR (5lbs)
Hyperextensions 40(6, 5) PR (5lbs)
I decided to up my squat 10lbs this week since I will be maxing next, actually it isn't really because of that... I just felt like it. Anyways 225 was ****ing hard! I lifted with my friend today so he was able to spot me on the 6th rep of the first set my pushing my lowerback and chest together. Then I did 5 very hard reps for the 2nd set and knew I wouldn't be able to get the 6th so I didn't try. Then I did 4 reps on my 3rd set and got assistance for the 5th. Then I upped my front squats 5lbs, and they were hard, it seems whenever I do front squats my face turns bright red from me pushing so damn hard :). Leg curls felt good, but on the 5th rep of the 2nd set my ham tweaked a little and felt like it would cramp if I tried to do another rep so I stopped. SLDL went up well... I'll up it another 5lbs next week for sure. Hypers also felt good. Overall great workout!
looks great to me too
good lukc w/ max!!!

LF Dips 55(6, 6) PR (2reps)
CG Bench 165(6, 6) PR (5lbs)
Skullcrushers 90(4, 3)
Workout went well today! ALMOST got all three sets for 195lbs, it's ok though was still a great PR. Although I tweaked my neck after my first set... :/ It felt better as time went, but it gave me a headache like feeling towards the bottom/back/sides of my head. Anyone know what that might have been from? I was pushing really hard! :D 75s were still tough, I'm 100% postive I will get full sets for both next week though. Dips felt awesome as usual... CG Bench also went well. Skullcrushers were very tough, I'm sure I will get atleast 1 set of 6 next time though. All I know is I AM READY TO MAX BABY! My goal is 245lbs!

Great workout adam strong everything.
BTW the headache you explained sounds like an exertion headache which can be caused be a lack of proper breathing. Ive gotten a few of them in the past and they hurt like hell. Just focus on your breathing and youll be fine. I had to stop lifting for a couple weeks once cause everytime i lifted i got one. ouch.

I don't have a strict diet really. I try and stay away from junk. I haven't had pop in like 8 months. I drink about 1 1/2 gallons of water a day. Water is all I drink except for milk with my protein shake. When I wake up I Have my creatine, a multi vitamen, and my protein shake. Then if I'm not running late I will have some cereal, or fruit, or ceral bar, or whatever. For lunch I have two tuna sandwhiches (one can of tuna on each sandwhich) basically everyday. Mid day/ Before my workout I have my creatine. Mid day/ After my workout I have another multi vitamen and another protein shake. I have alot of whatever my mom makes for dinner. I eat snacks periodically throught the day... whenever I'm hungry.

5/28/04 (Shoulders/Calves/Abs)
DB Press 30s(10), 65s(6, 4, 3), 45s(6)
Laterals 25s(6, 6)
BB Shrugs 135(10), 235(6, 6) PR (10lbs)
Standing Calf Raises 100-300(8), 100(20)
Seated Calf Raises 45(20)
Incline Crunches bw(12), 50(8, 8) PR (5lbs)
At the end of my first set of db press I got that damn pain in my neck again. I wasn't able to do as many as I could the second set because of it. Then the third set I just stopped. Right after the third set I picked up the 45s just to kind of finish I guess. Laterals were good, although I don't really like the exercise. Shrugs were very hard! My calf workout went good again, I think I am seeing a little bit of growth also. Crunches went well, good overall workout.

I just found an article on what I am getting:
Exertional Headache
Benign exertional headache has been recognized as a separate entity for more than 60 years. In 1932, Tinel (7) first described severe but transient headaches following exercise. Since then, these headaches have been associated with exercises such as weightlifting (8) and wrestling (9).
Recent studies (8-10) have delineated a clear-cut exertional headache syndrome: Straining or a Valsalva-type maneuver precipitates the acute onset of severe throbbing pain, usually occipital, for a few seconds to a few minutes. The headache then settles to a dull ache lasting 4 to 6 hours. In subsequent weeks to months, the headache recurs with exertion. The patient has no history of migraine and a normal neurologic exam.
In the largest series to date, Rooke (11) followed 103 patients with benign exertional headaches and found that approximately 10% had an organic cause for the pain, usually a skull-base anomaly. Clearly, the major differential diagnosis--subarachnoid hemorrhage--needs to be excluded by appropriate investigation.
Exertional headaches are thought to be vascular, but this is unproven. According to one theory, exertional headache occurs because exertion increases cerebral arterial pressure, causing the pain-sensitive venous sinuses at the base of the brain to dilate. Studies of weight lifters (12) demonstrate that, with maximal lifts, systolic blood pressure may reach levels above 400 mm Hg and diastolic pressures above 300 mm Hg. The throbbing, migrainous nature of these headaches, together with the finding (13) that intravenous dihydroergotamine mesylate can relieve them, supports the supposition that these headaches have a vascular basis.
A related type of vascular headache caused by sexual activity is termed benign sex headache or orgasmic cephalgia (13). Angiographic studies (14) of both benign exertional and benign sex headaches have demonstrated arterial spasm, further implicating the vascular tree as the basis of these conditions. However, despite their vascular nature, no convincing association with migraine is demonstrable.
Treatment strategies include NSAIDs such as indomethacin at a dose of 25 mg three times per day (15). In practice, the headaches tend to recur over weeks to months when the patient performs the provoking activity and then slowly resolve without treatment, although some cases may be lifelong. In the recovery period, a graduated symptom-limited
So I think that the rest will do me good.

Yup. Exactly what happened to me. I had em for a while and they would come every workout but I rested for awhile and they would eventually go away. I got my first one at wrestling, then it was awhile before i had another then i had a string of em. Youll be fine, just rest it up. :)

Squats 135(6), 185(4), 205(2), 265(1), 275(1), 285(1) PR (30lbs)
I felt really good today. I put up 265lbs, a 10lbs PR easy. Then I kind of lost form for a second with 275lbs and it almost turned into a GM as I was coming up, but I arched back and exploded up with my legs... I think I almost jumped :). Then I decided to go for 285lbs, it was heavy but I tore it up. Great max workout. Now for bench tomorrow! Then rest :D.

Sweet workout!! Excellent job maxing on the squat!!
How are you liking the gym you go to? I very rarely even go to the gym anymore, usually just for deadlifting. I have a decent setup here that i've been using a lot. Colin and I are prolly going to lift here a bit in the summer. You are welcome too if you would like. :)

I've got the basics. I have a pretty nice power rack, barbell, about 500 lbs total in weights, a pullups bar, a stereo, a pink n white seated calf raise i got free from a womens gym (:D) a extremely comfy incline/flat bench, boards for board presses, a pair of mini bands and a pair of average strength bands. I also have a sweet adjustable box for box squatting. Also, if you open up the garage door i have an appx 20x20 concrete square driveway of sorts which you can use to deadlift and clean and stuff. I have a belt system for doing weighted pullups as well. I have a stereo out there too and my house is set back from the road so i can turn it up without people getting pissed. (at least when the ****er doesn't skip. :))

Bench 135(6), 165(4), 185(2), 225(1), 245(0), 245(0) PR (10lbs)
Grrr, I'm not very happy about this. I put up 225lbs easy, then went to 245lbs. The first attempt I got stuck in the middle. I was just going to try 235lbs but I decided to try 245lbs again. I got SO CLOSE :( but I couldn't lock the damn thing out. I'm trying to decide if I want to go back at about 8pm or 9pm. I did my max lifting at about 1:45pm. Who think I should go try 235lbs, and then maybe 245lbs again?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?! I am taking the rest of the week off so ya, I probably going to go no matter what you guys say :D.

I just got back from lifting. As I was warming up my muscles seemed a little tired. I tried to ignore it and got jacked for 235lbs. I got up 235lbs... it was very hard though. I didn't even try 245lbs again, I know I have it in me but I also knew my muscles wouldn't let me get it tonight, but it's all good. I'm probably not going to max again for 1 1/2 - 2 months or so. Next week I'm going to work on my form a lot. Dan I might come over to your house if it's cool, so you can help make sure my form is in check, mostly with squats.

Workout went well... It was my first time DLing and I decided that I am going to be doing 3x4 instead of the usual 2x6 with it. I did my warm-up with 135lbs, then I upped my weight each time, just basically to see were I'm at. 225lbs felt good... I will use it for 3x4 next week. Then I did 275x2 just for the hell of it. I kept my BB Rows at the same weight that I had them last time, since I'm just coming back from rest and whatnot... Well I ****ing destroyed them, pulled every rep with great form. Pullups also felt good.

I had an awesome workout! Even after getting off creatine for a week now, and over a weeks worth of rest, I still hit a 5lbs PR for Bench. Military press went well, I didn't know how much I would be able to do... I put on 135lbs at first but unracked it and knew I wouldn't be able to rep it. So I put it down to 115lbs, I got stuck about 2/3 the way up on the 6th rep of the first set. That kind of pissed me off. I got really pumped for the second set and hit all 6 reps. The 6th rep took about 15 seconds to go up though it was craazy, I just kept breathing and kept pushing. I also upped the reps for my laterals, that felt really good.

Yesturday's workout... I was tired so I didn't post it, but here it is. Well the workout went well. I got up 205lbs for 6 on the first set, was pretty tough... it felt great. Then I upped the weight 5lbs for Incline and well that was too heavy. So I lowered it to 75lbs and well my body was pretty dead from the heavy bench and 80lbs attempt. But that is ok I guess... I had a great workout today! I decided to go at 275lbs again as it seemed a little heavy last week. Well I DESTROYED it today, felt awesome and actually pretty easy. BB Row also felt good. Pullups went very well almost at the 35lbs plate! Shrugs hit the traps very nice. I CAN'T WAIT TO MAX DEADLIFT! I have a feeling I'm going to hit some good weight.

This was last Fridays workout... forgot to post it. Well it was ****ing hard to say the least. I upped the weight 5lbs in every exercise. Only got full reps in two of them though. I didn't go under 4 reps in any of the lifts though, which I was glad about since my rep range is about 4-6. Still a good workout, I think bench max should go well.

Well today was my Deadlift max day. It was my first time maxing for deadlift, the most I had done prior to this was 275x4. 315 flew up like nothing... felt really good. 365 was pretty hard, went up fairly slow, but once I got it high enough my hips owned it. My grip almost gave out at the top but I held on. I'm very happy with 365. Bench max this Friday!

I am very pleased with my bench PR! 25lbs in a little over a month ain't bad. I tried 265 but was already pretty tired from 260, I think I might have been able to get 265 if I had tried it instead of 260. After the first set of incline db's I realized that I had only been bringing my arms down to parallel and didn't know why, so I brought them down as far as I could for the next set and well... I think I need to lower the weight a little :). I tweaked a muscle or something during the first set of Military Presses, it started hurting on the inside of the shoulder blade area. So I didn't do the second set, Laterals didn't bother it so I went ahead and did them. It is feeling a lot better now, I think it may have knotted up or something, meh. Awesome workout and a nice PR for bench.

WOW......................you've ben kicking some serious ****ing ass bro. EVERYTHING has ben looking great. 25 lb gain on a bench in just a little over 1 month is a GREAT gain, probabley one of the best you'll experience. Keep it up man, huge progress!

Thats some real good benching man!
I would say you'd be good for 270 with those incline dumbells AFTER a max out.
Unlucky with the shoulder problems to man, I have my fair share too, do a little warm down at the end, I find that helps.

Sunday July 18, 2004:
Squats
135x6
185x4
225x2
275x1
305x1 PR (20lbs Kind Of)
315x1 PR (30lbs)
Well it was kind of a weird max but... it works lol. When I went to hit 305lbs I went down further than parallel and the left side of my bar hit the safety bar (guess I had them too high) which caused it to bounce up a little and tilt so the right side hit the safety bar and bounced a little. Well I got it under control really quick and squated it up. I figured that since I was able to get it under control and I sure as hell wasn't going to try it again as I didn't know if I would be able to get 315lbs or not if I tried 305lbs again, I just went for 315lbs. Slowed down at the mid point on the way up, but pushed through and hit it for a great max!

what's with the high rep range? You easing up?
invast
07-22-2004, 01:09 AM
Thanks everyone, yes it does feel great to be at 3 plates.
Baller I wouldn't really call 8 a HIGH rep range, I'm not easing up, just like to mix it up. BTW I actually lowered the rep amount for my main lifts (Bench, Squat, Deadlift).
big_baller
07-22-2004, 04:39 AM
ah ok, mixing it up is cool.
8 rep sets isn't high? Are you a powerlifter? strongman? bodybuilder? or general strength?
invast
07-22-2004, 04:54 AM
I am more general strength right now, concentrating on building a solid core as I have only been lifting serious for about 4 months. Although if I ever do get specific it will be towards powerlifting.
