This question is for Derek, or anyone else who would like to reply.
I noticed that quite a few lifters recommend drinking a medium whey shake (20-40g) with some carbs during their workout. I've also read just about as much literature stating that elevated adrenaline levels, as one has when training with any intensity, can lead to stomach irritability and hampered digestion of and "absorption" any calories consumed.
I am a relatively light lifter, 5'10" 172 ~12-13%, and I always warm up with about 5-6 min of light cardio. I couldn't imagine keeping down 40g of whey after a session of cardio followed by deadlifts, squats, or supersetted curls...you get the picture.
Personally, I find that if I don't wait at least 30 min before starting my routine after a meal I'll be having some serious indigestion. But I have read rave reviews of the "during" workout shake by some serious monsters. What is your take on the issue, would you recommend I replace the warm-up cardio with extra stretching and just pound the shake? Is the "during" shake only for bulking?
I'd appreciate any comments.
Thanks,
-A
